Abstract
BACKGROUND Staff in residential long-term care (RLTC) experience significant physical and mental work demands. However, research on specific interventions to promote staff health and well-being in RLTC facilities is limited. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the current evidence on health promotion interventions among RLTC staff. METHODS A comprehensive systematic literature review was conducted on studies published between January 2000 and April 2023. Four electronic databases were searched, including PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and PsychArticles via EBSCO. The review followed the guidelines outlined in the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Risk of Bias Assessment tool (RoB 2). RESULTS A total of 26 publications, referring to 23 different interventions with a randomized controlled design were included. Among these interventions, ten used training/educational approaches, six used behavioral approaches, and seven employed a multimodal approach. Significant improvements in health and well-being outcomes were found in four interventions using a training/educational approach, three interventions using a behavioral approach, and four interventions using a multimodal approach. Within the interventions studied, twelve specifically targeted the reduction of job demands, while only one intervention exclusively addressed job resources among RLTC staff. Furthermore, ten interventions addressed primary outcomes that encompassed both job demands and job resources. CONCLUSION Current evidence for health promotion interventions among RLTC staff is still limited, but research suggests that there is potential to improve certain outcomes related to RLTC staff health and well-being. Future research is recommended to contemplate a tailored intervention design that encompasses both individual-level and organizational-level approaches, and gender-specific physiological and sociological characteristics of RLTC staff. Moreover, detailed reporting of the development process, and research on the interaction between job demands and resources of RLTC staff are also recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Newly graduated registered nurses leaving the nursing profession in the early stages of their career have enormous financial and time implications for nursing organizations and affect the quality of nursing care. OBJECTIVE To identify the factors influencing newly graduated registered nurses' intention to leave the nursing profession over the past 10 years. METHODS The framework developed by Whittemore and Knafl was used to conduct this integrative review. An electronic search was conducted for English articles to identify research studies published between 2011-2022 using the following databases of PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus. Eligible publications were critically reviewed and scored using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program Checklist and the Center for Evidence-Based Management appraisal. RESULTS Twenty-one studies were analyzed. The main factors affecting newly graduated registered nurses' intention to leave the nursing profession included demographic factors (age, educational level, year of experience, professional title, employment status, health status, shift, hospital location and size), supervisor and peer support, challenges in the workplace, cognitive and affective response to work, work environment (collegial nurse-physician relations, insufficient staffing level, person-work environment fit), gender stereotypes, autonomous motivation, role models, and resilience. CONCLUSIONS The factors affecting newly graduated registered nurses' intention to leave the nursing profession are multifaceted and should receive continuous attention from nurse managers. The findings provide more comprehensive for nurse administrators to develop intervention strategies to mitigate newly graduated registered nurses' turnover intention.

Abstract
AIM To identify potential categories of clinical belonging among new nurses and explore the relationship between different categories and turnover intention. DESIGN A cross sectional study. METHOD A cross sectional study was conducted among 348 new nurses from tertiary hospitals in Hainan and Guangdong provinces. A general data questionnaire, clinical belonging scale and turnover intention scale were used for examination. Further, the potential categories were used to analyse the categories of clinical belonging, and latent class analysis was utilized to analyse the relationship between different categories of clinical belonging and turnover intention. RESULTS The clinical sense of belonging of new nurses were divided into three groups namely C1, C2 and C3. The C1: poor clinical sense of belonging (8.7%), C2: moderate clinical sense of belonging (57.9%) and C3: rich clinical sense of belonging (33.4%). The risk of the turnover intention of new nurses with 'poor clinical sense of belonging' was 0.62 times that of new nurses with 'rich clinical sense of belonging' (OR = 0.62, p < 0.01), which was 0.24 times that of 'moderate clinical sense of belonging' (OR = 0.24, p < 0.01), the risk of the turnover intention of new nurses with 'moderate clinical sense of belonging' was 0.13 times that of new nurses with 'rich clinical sense of belonging'(OR = 0. 13, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS The results of our study revealed that in order to enhance the new nurses' sense of belonging, support was most crucial when they were first encountering difficulties. To reduce turnover intention, more structured learning opportunities are also required to maximize learning for newly graduated nurses with various nursing degrees. Abstract
AIM Explore the existing literature on the experience and needs of palliative nurses facing job burnout. BACKGROUND On a global scale, with the increase of aging, the number of people in need of palliative care has increased significantly, which has a huge impact on the professional pressure of palliative nurses. Existing literature focuses on examining palliative care from the perspective of patients, but palliative nurses also face the threats to physical and mental health caused by job burnout. EVALUATION A systematic literature search has been carried out in the following databases as of October 2021:PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Scopus. The Cochrane Library and Joanna Briggs Institute Library were also searched to confirm if there are any available systematic reviews on the subject. Manually searched the reference list of included papers. KEY ISSUES Seventeen studies were included in this review. Five key issues in the palliative care nurse's experience: (1) psychological harm, (2) physical symptoms, (3) negative emotions, (4) Burnout caused by communication barriers, and (5) Lack of experience. Two key issues in the needs of palliative care nurses: (1) social support, and (2) training and education. CONCLUSION The pressure of facing death for a long time and controlling the symptoms of patients has a very important impact on the mental and physical health of palliative nurses. Nursing staff have needed to be satisfied, and it is essential to provide support and help relieve the pressure on palliative nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The care sector is characterized by high absenteeism of nursing care employees due to illness. Organizational determinants that can affect the mental health of nurses are known. Although nurses are confronted with different framework conditions in different care settings, there is a lack of comparative data in Germany. METHODS The purpose of this study was to examined the relationship between work demands and employee health in different care settings. This cross-sectional survey was conducted between June and October 2021 in four acute care hospitals, seven inpatient care facilities, and five outpatient care services in Germany. 528 nursing care employees (acute care hospitals n = 234; inpatient care facilities n = 152; outpatient care services n = 142) participated in the survey (participation rate: 22.6%-27.9%). For each care setting, data was collected via questionnaire on individual determinants (gender, age, profession, working time), organizational work demands (quantitative workload, qualitative workload, organization of work, social work climate, after work situation, verbal violence, threats, physical violence) and employee health (subjective health status and work ability). Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regressions were performed. RESULTS Increasing age (OR = 0.650, 95% CI = 0.424-0.996) as an individual determinant and organization of work (OR = 0.595, CI = 0.362-0.978) as an organizational determinant were negatively associated with subjective health. Furthermore, age (OR = 0.555, 95% CI = 0.353-0.875), a demanding organization of work (OR = 0.520, CI = 0.315-0.858), increasing quantitative workloads (OR = 0.565, CI = 0.343-0.930) and a poorer perceived social work climate (OR = 0.610, CI = 0.376-0.991) were associated with lower work ability. CONCLUSIONS Based on the study results, health programs should target both individual and organizational factors. The findings seem to support the importance to include nursing care employees in the planning process, as it can have an impact on their health. Abstract
The working routines in palliative care nursing are associated with a variety of causes of stress with regional and setting-specific differences in Germany. This mixed-methods study aimed to investigate the mental and physical well-being among nurses in German palliative and hospice care and to gain a deeper understanding of procedural and structural aspects that may influence the mental and physical burden in palliative nursing care. The mixed-methods approach combined qualitative interviews, (n = 16) an online survey (n = 101), and subsequent data validation in a focus group (n = 6). Interview and focus group data were analysed using structured qualitative content analysis. Survey data were analysed using descriptive statistics and an explorative quantitative analysis. Moderate to very high levels of stress were reported across all settings, but were highest for nurses in specialized outpatient palliative care settings. Underlying causes of stress related to working conditions in the nursing profession across all palliative care settings were poor working hours, perceived inadequate remuneration, and high demands for documentation. To ensure sustainable high-quality palliative care, adaptations to working conditions that target causes of stress and burden in palliative care nurses are required.

The Second Side of the Coin-Resilience, Meaningfulness and Joyful Moments in Home Health Care Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Abstract
Nursing literature predominantly focuses on job demands but is scarce for resources related to nurses' work. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, resources that can buffer the health-impairing effects of increased demands gain importance. The aim of this study is to explore resilience, meaning of work and joyful moments in home health care workers in South Germany during the pandemic. Resilience and meaning of work were measured quantitatively; moments of joy were investigated qualitatively by audio diaries and analyzed with qualitative content analysis. In all, 115 home health care workers (mean age = 47.83 ± 11.72; 81.75% female) filled in the questionnaires and 237 diary entries were made by 23 persons (mean age = 46.70 ± 10.40; 91.30% female). The mean scores of resilience (5.52 ± 1.04; 1-7) and meaning of work (4.10 ± 0.92; 1-5) showed high levels, with significantly higher values in females. Home care workers experienced joyful moments 334 times in 60 different types in the categories of social relationships, work content, work organization, work environment and self-care. A deeper understanding of resilience, meaning of work and joyful moments provides a basis for the development of worksite health promotion programs that address both demands and resources in home health care workers.

Abstract
Purpose Stressful and demanding clinical situations may contribute to job dissatisfaction and may even contribute to an intention to leave the job among palliative care (PC) clinicians. Personal and organizational factors may influence the occupational well-being of PC clinicians as well. This study aimed to determine the predictive contribution of personal (communication skills, resilience, religiosity) and organizational (coworkers' social support, job control) factors in the explanation of PC clinicians job (dis)satisfaction and their intention to leave their job. Methods The study was conducted on a convenience sample of 122 PC clinicians of different disciplines (nurses/technicians, physicians, psychologists, spiritual counsellors/priests, social workers, physical therapists, etc). The sample mainly consisted of nurses (57%). Hierarchical and logistic regression analyses of the results obtained were applied. Results This study indicates that 53% of PC clinicians are satisfied with their daily job and 76% do not intend to leave the job. The results showed no differences in job satisfaction and intention to leave between nurses/technicians and other PC clinicians. A significant negative correlation was found between job satisfaction and intention to leave the job. Communication skills, religiosity and coworkers' social support, showed as significant predictors of job satisfaction. PC clinicians' perception of their own difficulties in communicating bad news contributed significantly to job satisfaction and intention to leave the job in palliative care. Conclusion This study suggests that job satisfaction in a palliative care setting is determined by a larger number of personal and organizational factors than the intention to leave the job. Communication skills showed indispensable for providing quality care for dying patients. Skills in communicating bad news to dying patients and their families have emerged as particularly important for PC clinicians' occupational well-being.

Abstract
Background Working in the nursing sector is accompanied by great physical and mental health burdens. Consequently, it is necessary to develop target-oriented, sustainable profession-specific support and health promotion measures for nurses. Objectives The present review aims to give an overview of existing major health problems and violence experiences of nurses in different settings (acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, and home-based long-term care) in Germany. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and PubPsych and completed by a manual search upon included studies’ references and health insurance reports. Articles were included if they had been published after 2010 and provided data on health problems or violence experiences of nurses in at least one care setting. Results A total of 29 studies providing data on nurses health problems and/or violence experience were included. Of these, five studies allowed for direct comparison of nurses in the settings. In addition, 14 studies provided data on nursing working in acute care hospitals, ten on nurses working in long-term care facilities, and four studies on home-based long-term care. The studies either conducted a setting-specific approach or provided subgroup data from setting-unspecific studies. The remaining studies did not allow setting-related differentiation of the results. The available results indicate that mental health problems are the highest for nurses in acute care hospitals. Regarding violence experience, nurses working in long-term care facilities appear to be most frequently affected. Conclusion The state of research on setting-specific differences of nurses’ health problems and violence experiences is insufficient. Setting-specific data are necessesary to develop target-group specific and feasible interventions to support the nurses’ health and prevention of violence, as well as dealing with violence experiences of nurses.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the demand and workload on nurses. In addition, the number of critical cases, the uncertainty about the disease, and the incidence rate of death from the disease impose a psychological stress on nurses. Considering the alarming issues of stress, burnout, and turnover among nurses even before the pandemic, the pandemic might have amplified such issues. Thus, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nurses' turnover and turnover intention warrants investigation. The aim of this review is to appraise and integrate the current pre- and post-coronavirus disease (COVID-19) literature on nurse turnover, published between 2016 and 2021. Forty-three studies on nurses' turnover intention were appraised and synthesized. The reviewed literature suggested that nurses' turnover intention increased significantly after the COVID-19 pandemic. Post-COVID-19-pandemic studies focused more on predicting nurses' turnover intention through the pandemic's negative impact on the nurses' psychological wellbeing. The findings of this review should be considered by nurse managers and leaders in the development of policies and programs to reduce the negative impact of COVID-19 on nurse retention.

Abstract
The job demands-resources (JD-R) model has hardly been studied in volunteer organizations and there is a scarcity of studies evaluating self-compassion as a personal resource within the JD-R model. The present study addresses these gaps in current knowledge, first by examining the applicability of the JD-R model in a crisis line volunteer organization. Second, self-compassion is examined, both in terms of its moderating role on the exhaustion process as well as its role on the motivation process. Structural equation modelling was used for the analyses. The influence on the organizational outcome 'compassion towards others' was examined using a multiple regression analysis. The results showed that the JD-R model has an acceptable fit on this sample and supports the central assumption that exhaustion and motivation are two independent but related processes. This study provides evidence that self-compassion is a valuable addition to the JD-R model, as it has an indirect effect on both processes, and increases the explained variance in compassion towards others by 7% through the exhaustion process and by 3% through the motivational process. These findings point to the importance of focusing on self-compassion in training and supervision in volunteer organizations.

Abstract
Workload in the nursing profession is high, which is associated with poor health. Thus, it is important to get a proper understanding of the working situation and to analyse factors which might be able to mitigate the negative effects of such a high workload. In Germany, many people with serious or life-threatening illnesses are treated in non-specialized palliative care settings such as nursing homes, hospitals and outpatient care. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the buffering role of resources on the relationship between workload and burnout among nurses. A nationwide cross-sectional survey was applied. The questionnaire included parts of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ) (scale 'quantitative demands' measuring workload, scale 'burnout', various scales to resources), the resilience questionnaire RS-13 and single self-developed questions. Bivariate and moderator analyses were performed. Palliative care aspects, such as the 'extent of palliative care', were incorporated to the analyses as covariates. 497 nurses participated. Nurses who reported 'workplace commitment', a 'good working team' and 'recognition from supervisor' conveyed a weaker association between 'quantitative demands' and 'burnout' than those who did not. On average, nurses spend 20% of their working time with palliative care. Spending more time than this was associated with 'burnout'. The results of our study imply a buffering role of different resources on burnout. Additionally, the study reveals that the 'extent of palliative care' may have an impact on nurse burnout, and should be considered in future studies.

Abstract
Zusammenfassung
Hintergrund Ziel der Studie ist es, Belastungen und Ressourcen von SAPV-Mitarbeitenden sowie deren Auswirkungen auf die Einschätzung des beruflichen Verbleibs in der SAPV zu untersuchen.
Methode Fragebogenerhebung in 30 SAPV-Teams in Bayern (457 Mitarbeitende) in Kooperation mit dem Landesverband SAPV Bayern e. V. Auswertung: deskriptive Statistik, T-Tests, logistische Regression (IBM SPSS 24).
Ergebnisse Die Rücklaufquote beträgt 53,4 % (n = 244). 64 Befragte (26,2 %) sind bzgl. des beruflichen Verbleibs in der SAPV unsicher. Die höchsten Belastungen werden auf den Skalen »Eigene Betroffenheit« und »Unkontrollierbarkeit« berichtet. Befragte, die höhere Belastung durch »Arbeitszeitorganisation« und »Überlastung« oder geringe »persönliche Ressourcen« berichten, sind eher unsicher bezüglich des beruflichen Verbleibs in der SAPV.
Schlussfolgerungen Es sind nicht Belastungen mit besonderer Relevanz in der SAPV (z. B. Unkontrollierbarkeit), sondern Arbeitszeitorganisation und Überlastung, die im Gesundheitswesen weitverbreitet sind, welche Mitarbeitende bzgl. ihres beruflichen Verbleibs in der SAPV unsicher sein lassen.

Abstract
Palliative care nurses are exposed to hard situations, death, and duel feelings in their daily practice. These, and other work stressors, can favor burnout development. Thus, it is important to analyze the prevalence and risk factors of burnout in palliative care nurses and estimate its prevalence. A systematic review and meta-analysis was done with quantitative primary studies. n = 15 studies were included with n = 6 studies including information for the meta-analysis. The meta-analytic prevalence estimation of emotional exhaustion was 24% (95% CI 16–34%), for depersonalization was 30% (95% CI 18–44%) and for low personal accomplishment was 28% with a sample of n = 693 palliative care nurses. The main variables related with burnout are occupational variables followed by psychological variables. Some interventions to improve working conditions of palliative care nurses should be implemented to reduce burnout.
