The application value of the clinical nursing pathway for patients with head and neck cancer

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to explore the effect of using the clinical nursing pathway (CNP) to provide high-quality nursing care to patients undergoing head and neck cancer surgery and provide a theoretical basis for clinical practice.

METHODS

In this study, 303 surgical patients with head and neck cancers were recruited. Participants were divided into 2 groups, based on 2 different nursing methods, i.e.., the control group (152 cases) and the intervention group (151 cases). The control group was given routine nursing care, and the intervention group was assigned high-quality nursing care following the CNP. The knowledge mastery, treatment, psychological status, quality of life, and nursing satisfaction of the two groups were compared.

RESULTS

The knowledge mastery score of the intervention group was higher compared with the control group (p < 0.05); the psychological state score of the intervention group was less than the control group's score (p < 0.05); the quality-of-life score of the intervention group was higher than the control group's score (p < 0.05), and the nursing satisfaction score was higher for the intervention group compared with the control group (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

High-quality nursing using the CNP for patients undergoing head and neck cancer surgery helps to improve patients' knowledge mastery, mental state, quality of life, and nursing satisfaction.

Effect assessment of evidence-based nursing in combination with clinical nursing pathway on nephrotic syndrome care in children: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Childhood nephrotic syndrome is widespread in pediatric nephrology. In most cases, it needs hospitalization for patient management. An increasing number of studies report that proper nursing care could promote the rate of treatment and improve post-treatment prognosis. Clinical nursing pathways refer to innovative nursing modes with high-quality, excellent efficacy, and low costing treatment. There are reports on how nursing methods that utilize data combine with clinical nursing pathway to enhance nephrotic syndrome care in kids. However, the results remain controversial. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct this study to systematically explore how evidence-based nursing combined with clinical nursing pathway plays a role in nephrotic syndrome care among children.

METHODS

This study protocol will conduct a comprehensive search on MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, EMBASE, Scopus, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang, and Web of Science electronic databases to identify relevant research articles from inception to April 25, 2021. Studies in both English and Chinese languages are used for this study. This study protocol will analyze randomized controlled trials that investigated the role of evidence-based nursing combined with clinical nursing pathway to care for nephrotic syndrome in children. Two authors will independently screen the search results, select suitable studies for inclusion, extract the characteristics and outcome data of the selected studies, and evaluate the risk of bias based on standard Cochrane methodology. Any discrepancies will be resolved by consensus.

RESULTS

The present study will summarize high-quality evidence to systematically explore how a nursing model based on evidence combined with clinical nursing pathway influences the caring of children with nephrotic syndrome.

CONCLUSION

The present study will summarize the direct and indirect evidence to judge whether evidence-based nursing combined with clinical nursing pathway can improve the treatment and post-treatment prognosis in children with nephrotic syndrome.

Nurse career mapping: a qualitative case study of a new hospital

BACKGROUND

Career mapping is an effective strategy for providing nurses with a clear direction and a realistic time scale for achieving their career goals. The purpose of this research is to investigate career mapping for nurses at a new hospital in Jakarta.

METHOD

The study design is qualitative and implements a focussed case study approach. Data were collected from focus group discussions (FGDs) with two groups: one group consisted of eight staff nurses and the other consisted of six nurse managers. An inductive content analysis of all transcripts from the FGDs and of field notes was conducted independently.

RESULT

This research produced seven themes that together portray the entire career mapping process. In Hospital X, the career map for a particular nurse is based on the level of formal education, the length and nature of their work experience and a competency assessment. A self-assessment process and considerations related to competence in all aspects of nursing have been included in the process for nurses at Hospital X. The idea that nurses should be positioned in a working environment that matches their level of competency is a fundamental principle for nursing managers.

CONCLUSION

As a new hospital, Hospital X has implemented nurse career mapping and striven for accreditation. Career developments not only become the responsibility of an organisation but also the responsibility of individuals to develop themselves and their careers.

Application values of clinical nursing pathway in patients with acute cerebral hemorrhage

Acute cerebral hemorrhage accounts for approximately 25% of strokes for elderly patients. Consequently, treatments to improve prognosis should be identified. The aim of the present study was to examine the clinical values of the application of clinical nursing pathway for patients with acute cerebral hemorrhage. Between January 2013 and January 2015, 92 patients diagnosed with acute intracerebral hemorrhage were enrolled in the study based on the guidelines recommended for providing appropriate surgical or conservative treatment and the sequence of admission. The 92 patients were randomly divided into the control and observation groups. Patients in the control group underwent routine nursing mode prior to and after admission, and underwent clinical nursing path model (hierarchical partitioning prior to admission to hospital plus general professional program of nursing in hospital) was applied to the observation group. Barthel index scores for the observation group were significantly higher than that of the control group. The length of hospital stay for patients in the observation group was significantly lower while the average score for patients' satisfaction on nursing care while in hospital was significantly higher than that of the control group, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). The incidence of complications such as fever, infection, bedsore, gastrointestinal function, electrolyte disturbances, and malnutrition, in the observation group was significantly lower, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). The functional independence measure (FIM) and Fugl-Meyer scores after 6 months for the observation group were significantly higher, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). In conclusion, application of the clinical nursing pathway for patients with acute cerebral hemorrhage significantly improved the clinical effects and nursing satisfaction, reduced adverse reactions, and had a greater clinical application value.
