Abstract
BACKGROUND The overall pandemic created enormous pressure on long-term care workers (LTCWs), making them particularly vulnerable to mental disorders. Despite this, most of the available evidence on professional well-being during COVID-19 has exclusively focused on frontline health care workers. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to identify the long-term psychological needs of LTCWs derived from the COVID-19 pandemic and to explore barriers and facilitators related to digital mental health tools. This is part of a project that seeks to develop a digital mental health intervention to reduce psychological distress in this population group. METHODS We performed a qualitative study with a rapid research approach. Participants were LTCWs of the autonomous community of Catalonia. We conducted 30 semistructured interviews between April and September 2022. We used a qualitative content analysis method with an inductive-deductive approach. RESULTS The period of the pandemic with the highest mental health burden was the COVID-19 outbreak, with almost all workers having experienced some form of emotional distress. Emotional distress persisted over time in more than half of the participants, with fatigue and nervousness being the main emotions expressed at the time of the interview. High workload, the feeling that pandemic times are not over, and poor working conditions that have remained since then have been the most frequently expressed determinants of such emotions. Potential barriers and facilitators to engagement with digital tools were also identified in terms of previous experience and beliefs of the target population, possibilities for the integration of a digital tool into daily life, preferences regarding the level of guidance, the possibility of social connectedness through the tool, and privacy and confidentiality. The identified factors may become especially relevant in the context of the pandemic remission phase. CONCLUSIONS More than 2 years after the pandemic outbreak, emotional distress is still relevant. The persistent burden of psychological distress points to a need for institutions to take action to improve working conditions and promote employees' well-being. Considering factors that act as barriers and facilitators for the use of digital mental health tools, it is important to develop tailored tools that could offer valuable support to this population during and after a pandemic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This scoping review maps the literature on psychosocial distress and coping among nursing assistants (CNAs) in long-term care facilities (LTC) during the COVID-19 pandemic onto the Social Ecological Model (SEM) of Occupational Stress. METHODS Searches yielded 862 unique studies. Inclusion criteria were sample CNAs or equivalent in LTC; includes psychosocial variable; and collect data from February 2020-. A multi-phasic, meta-synthesis was used to synthesize qualitative data. RESULTS We identified 20 studies (13 quantitative, 7 qualitative) conducted between March 2020 and December 2021 from 14 countries. Prevalence rates were reported for perceived stress (31-33%; n = 1 study), post-traumatic stress (42%; n = 1), anxiety (53%; n = 1), depression (15-59%; n = 2), suicidal thoughts (11-15%; n = 1), and everyday emotional burnout (28%; n = 1). Qualitative studies identified factors contributing to psychosocial distress and coping at each SEM level (i.e. individual, microsystem, organization, and peri-/extra-organizational). Quantitative studies primarily measured factors relating to psychosocial distress and coping at the individual and organizational levels. CONCLUSIONS & CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS This review identifies specific targets for intervention for psychosocial distress among CNAs in LTC at multiple levels, including job clarity; workload; facility culture; community relations; and policy. These intervention targets remain relevant to the LTC industry beyond the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Objective This study examined differences in care burden between formal and informal caregivers of dependent older adults according to care-related characteristics, and whether care time had a moderating effect on the relationship between care-related characteristics and caregiver burden. Methods Participants were formal (n = 520) and informal caregivers (n = 142) of dependent older adults in South Korea. Caregiver burden was measured using the Korean version of the Zarit Burden Interview. Data were analyzed using hierarchical regression with interaction terms and moderation analysis. Results Caregiver burden was higher for informal caregivers than formal caregivers. Factors associated with an increased risk of caregiver burden in both formal and informal caregiver of dependent older adults were caregivers' stress, physical strain, and care time. Care time significantly moderated the relationship between care attitude and care burden only among formal caregivers. When formal caregivers' care time was 1 standard deviation higher than the mean value, care attitude was significantly associated with care burden (bsimple = -0.903, SE = 0.106, p < 0.001). Conclusion The caregiver burden of dependent older adults can be reduced by providing interventions to attenuate the effects of modifiable risk factors that were identified in this study. And to weaken the relationship between care attitude and burden of formal caregivers who have long care hours, a positive social atmosphere for care should be provided in addition to education. To realize sustainable care, policy considerations that reflect the results of this study will help solve the problem of formal and informal caregiver burden of dependent older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses working in long-term care facilities were vaccinated first before residents as a matter of priority to protect the latter. Although the vaccination rate of nursing staff eventually rose due to a facility-based vaccination requirement, studies on associated factors of vaccination status are currently not available for the long-term care setting in Germany. OBJECTIVE Associated factors of COVID-19 vaccination status among nursing staff in long-term care facilities were explored. METHODS An online survey was conducted between October 26th 2021 and January 31st 2022. A total of 1546 nurses working in long-term care in Germany responded to questions concerning the Covid-19 vaccination campaign. Logistic regression analyses were performed. RESULTS In this study 8 out of 10 nurses were vaccinated against COVID-19 (80.6%). Approximately 7 out of 10 nurses thought at least a few times about quitting their job since the pandemic began (71.4%). A positive COVID-19 vaccination status was associated with older age, full-time employment, COVID-19 deaths at the facility and working in northern or western Germany. Frequent thoughts of quitting their job were associated with negative COVID-19 vaccination status. CONCLUSION The present findings provide evidence on factors associated with the COVID-19 vaccination status of nurses in long-term care facilities in Germany for the first time. Further quantitative as well as qualitative studies are necessary for a more comprehensive understanding of the COVID-19 vaccination decision-making among nurses in long-term care, in order to implement target-oriented future vaccination campaigns in this care setting.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore experiences of U.S. (United States) nursing home leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic in their efforts to address resident loneliness and social isolation and to elicit stories about personal and professional impacts on themselves and staff. DESIGN Qualitative inquiry via three optional open-ended questions appended to a national self-administered survey of American nursing home leaders was employed. Textual data was analyzed using an iterative reflexive thematic approach. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS A stratified sample frame defined by facility size (beds: 30-99, 100+) and quality ratings (1, 2-4, 5) was employed. Web survey links and paper surveys were sent to 1,676 nursing home directors of nursing between February and May 2022. RESULTS Open text responses were collected from 271 nursing homes. Broad themes included: 1) Addressing needs of residents & families; 2) Challenges; and 3) Personal experiences of nursing home leadership/staff. Respondents described trauma to residents, staff, and leadership. Resident loneliness was addressed using existing and newer technologies and innovative indoor and outdoor activities. Residents experienced fear, illness, loss, and sometimes death. Isolation from family and lack of touch were particularly difficult. Regulations were seen as punitive while ignoring emotional needs of residents. Staffing challenges and pressures to do more with less created additional stress. Leadership and staff made significant sacrifices resulting in physical, social, and emotional consequences. Beneficial outcomes included staff bonding, professional growth, and permanent implementation of new interventions. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS New and creative interventions were successfully implemented to address social isolation and loneliness. Improved Wi-Fi and other nursing home infrastructure upgrades are needed to maintain them. Reimagining often conflicting overlapping federal, state, and local regulations, grounding them in good clinical judgement, and incentivizing performance improvement should be considered. Trauma experienced by staff needs to be addressed to deal with current and future workforce needs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Germany, palliative care in nursing homes is becoming increasingly important. Simultaneously, nursing homes are particularly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic due to their vulnerable residents leading to increased burdens for nursing staff. Although a separate unit for palliative care may not be present in nursing homes as it is in, e.g., hospitals, palliative care occupies a large portion of the workday in nursing homes. As no study addressing this topic could be found, this study focused on the research questions of how the psychosocial burdens faced by nursing staff in palliative care have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and how those burdens differ from the psychosocial burdens encountered in general care. METHODS Basen on a longitudinal cohort study design, a total of 113 nurses, nursing assistants and caregivers drawn from two nursing homes in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, were surveyed pre-pandemic in 2019 and during the pandemic in 2022 using the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ) III. Data were examined descriptively following the standardised COPSOQ procedure. Additionally, chi-squared test was conducted to investigate the homogeneity between the groups. Mean differences (MD) were provided and Cohen's d was calculated to evaluate relevant differences in psychosocial burdens between 2019 and 2022. In a second step, t-tests were performed to test statistical significance. RESULTS Relevant positive changes could be identified in 'Quantitative demands' (d = 0.321; MD = 5.9), 'Influence at work' (d = 0.244; MD = 5.4), 'Job insecurity' (d = 0.321; MD = 6.5), 'Insecurity over working conditions' (d = 0.296; MD = 6.8), 'Burnout symptoms related to residents' (d = 0.201; MD = 3.8), 'Degrees of freedom' (d = 0.455; MD = 9.6) and 'Presenteeism' (d = 0.425; MD = 11.8). Relevant negative changes were found in 'Dissolution' (d = 0.217; MD = 5.4; i.e., setting boundaries between work and private life), 'Role conflicts' (d = 0.282; MD = 5.5), 'Role clarity' (d = 0.251; MD = 3.3) and 'Burnout symptoms related to relatives' (d = 0.318; MD = 6.0). Relevant changes that were statistically significant according to the t-test could be identified in 'Degrees of freedom' (t-value=-2.40; p = 0.018) and 'Presenteeism' (t-value = 2.26; p = 0.026). Responses to questions concerning nursing homes' handling of the COVID-19 pandemic exhibited a mean score of 68.2 for 'Organisation/communication' and a mean score of 78.1 concerning 'Operational measures and overall assessment' during the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSIONS Besides negative changes during the COVID-19 pandemic, some categories showed more positive results. The burdens of palliative care in nursing homes may be perceived differently than those of general care in nursing homes. Furthermore, the results indicate that perceptions of challenges in palliative care in nursing homes during the pandemic seem to be highly dependent on organisational working conditions and support that can strengthen the individual resources and resilience of the staff.

Abstract
In Germany, nursing homes are characterised by challenging conditions for adequately supporting residents at their end of life, which have even amplified due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This article therefore analyses how hospice and palliative care in nursing homes has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and how the pandemic has affected residents, relatives and employees. Semi-structured interviews with employees, residents and relatives were conducted before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in two nursing homes in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. In a pre-post comparison, data were qualitatively evaluated using content analysis according to Mayring. Shifts, congruities and discrepancies in challenges in hospice and palliative care were identified between T0 and T1. Due to contact restrictions, important parts of end-of-life care were missing, and the roles of individuals providing hospice and palliative care were redefined. The interviewed groups experienced changes differently and contradictory statements on satisfaction and expectations about hospice and palliative care were reported. Employees and relatives predominantly perceived the pandemic to be very stressful, while residents endured this period more composedly. Employees stated that, despite the pandemic, they were mostly able to meet residents' requests. However, relatives and residents expressed that minor requests were not reliably fulfilled, neither at T0 nor at T1. Drawing together the different perspectives from employees, residents and relatives offers a bigger picture of challenges in hospice and palliative care in nursing homes and the pandemic effects. Stronger communication of requests and needs as well as greater collaboration, especially under crisis conditions, are essential for a better quality of end-of-life care. There is an urgent need to break down the taboos around the topics of dying and death in nursing homes.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic once again highlighted the vulnerability of residents of long-term care facilities due to their increased risk of a severe or fatal course of COVID-19. To protect the residents in the face of high incidences of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV‑2) in the general population, a number of measures for infection protection were recommended, which led to a decrease of COVID-19 case numbers and deaths in the facilities during the pandemic. However, factors in the facilities that hampered the implementation of these measures and represented a significant impact on the health of the residents also became visible.The challenges concern working conditions (e.g., lack of staff, both in general and with corresponding competencies, and work-related stress), the care of residents (e.g., medical and psychosocial), and structural as well as facility-related factors (e.g., facility size).Approaches to these problems indicate that a successful implementation of infection control measures should be part of a concept for redesigning the work and living conditions of the staff and residents of the facilities. It is important to note that infection control should not be planned exclusively with regard to future pandemics, but is of relevance for health risks that already exist in the facilities, such as healthcare-associated infections, antibiotic resistances, or influenza.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the association between sociodemographic factors, stress, depression and anxiety, emotional eating, and concern about COVID-19 contagion in first and second-line Peruvian nurses. METHODOLOGY The study was cross-sectional and conducted with 500 Peruvian nurses of both sexes, over 18 years of age. Validated questionnaires were used to measure sociodemographic aspects, concern about COVID-19, generalized anxiety, depression, self-perceived stress, and emotional eating. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to analyze the factors affecting concern about COVID-19 contagion. RESULTS The multiple linear regression analysis showed that stress, being between the ages of 18 and 29 years, being male, being from the coastal region or the jungle region, having a bachelor's degree, severe anxiety, and severe depression were associated with higher concern about COVID-19. On the other hand, having more than 5 to 10 years of experience and more than 10 years of experience, low emotional eating, and non-emotional eating were negatively associated with concern. This model explained 44.05% of the variability among the participating nurses. CONCLUSION These findings provide resources for future research on the comprehensive well-being of nursing staff by exploring various sociodemographic aspects and mental conditions associated with greater concern about COVID-19. Meanwhile, years of experience and emotional eating behavior were associated with lower concern about COVID-19. Future studies could incorporate this information to preserve the mental and physical health of nurses in the face of potential occupational threats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic confronted nursing homes with a variety of challenges to ensure the provision of palliative care for residents. PallPan-Implement aimed to adapt the recommendations of the National Strategy for the Care of Seriously Ill, Dying Adults and their Families in Times of Pandemic (PALLPAN) in such a way that nursing facilities can use and implement them. METHODS Based on 33 PALLPAN recommendations, we developed a questionnaire, conducted a pilot implementation for selected nursing homes, and asked for qualitative feedback. RESULTS The developed questionnaire contains 22 main questions. A three-stage pilot implementation with an introductory event, processing phase, and evaluation event took place in seven facilities. The facilities evaluated the developed questionnaire as helpful. Feedback from the facilities identified three major categories: (a) requirements for facilities should be realistic to avoid frustration, (b) the creation of a pandemic plan for palliative care only is impractical, (c) measures for the psychosocial support of staff is particularly necessary, but was perceived as difficult to implement. CONCLUSIONS The practical implementation of recommendations requires a concept and material tailored to facilities and areas. The strategy of PallPan Implement developed in this project appears to be target-oriented, well-received, and can be recommended for further implementation.

Abstract
Purpose The study aimed at investigating the state of psychiatric nurses’ job satisfaction, job burnout, and the moderating effect of family support between them in China during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods Online self-report questionnaires were distributed and 212 psychiatric nurses participated in the research. Pearson correlation analysis, multiple stepwise regression analysis, and simple slope test were used for data analysis. Results The results showed that the status of their job satisfaction (53.67 ± 10.72) and burnout (33.62 ± 13.84) did not reach a satisfactory level and job satisfaction had a significant negative impact on job burnout. Meanwhile, family support played a negative moderating role between the two variables. Conclusion Psychiatric nurses suffered from job burnout in China during the COVID-19. Family support could have a counterproductive effect when the nurses were experiencing decreasing job satisfaction. It gave suggestions to the medical institutions and the government to improve the psychological well-being of the psychiatric nurses and even of all the medical staff.

Abstract
Zusammenfassung. Hintergrund: Die Umsetzung von Schutzmaßnahmen in Pflegeheimen während der Covid-19-Pandemie war mit dem Wegfall sozialer Teilhabeangebote in der ersten Covid-19-Welle verbunden, für die zweite Covid-Welle ist dies unzureichend untersucht. Ziel: Die Evaluation des Zusammenhangs von Schutzmaßnahmen und Einschränkungen der sozialen Teilhabe für die zweite Covid-19-Welle zur Ausarbeitung von Handlungsempfehlungen. Methode: Mixed-Methods-Online-Survey von Pflegeheimleitungen ( n = 873) in der zweiten Welle. Mithilfe binärlogistischer verallgemeinerter Schätzgleichungen wurde die Wahrscheinlichkeit für das Wegfallen sozialer Teilhabeangebote in den Pflegeheimen in Abhängigkeit gesetzlicher Schutzmaßnahmen evaluiert. Offene Antworten zur Aufrechterhaltung sozialer Teilhabe wurden inhaltsanalytisch untersucht ( n = 1042). Ergebnisse: Mehr als jede zweite Pflegeheimleitung berichtet über untersagte Gruppenveranstaltungen (66,6%), mehr als jede dritte untersagte kreative Angebote (42,3%). Besuchseinschränkungen (85,2%) waren in der zweiten Welle weit verbreitet. Der Wegfall von Teilhabeangeboten und die angeordneten Schutzmaßnahmen waren eng assoziiert. Qualitative Daten zeigten, dass zum Beispiel das Anschaffen mobiler Einkaufsläden Maßnahmen waren, der sozialen Exklusion der Bewohnenden entgegenzuwirken. Diskussion: Der Zusammenhang zwischen dem Wegfall sozialer Teilhabeangebote und der Umsetzung von Schutzmaßnahmen war deutlich ausgeprägt. Die Pflegepraxis sollte die Umsetzung von sozialer Teilhabe ermöglichen und gleichzeitig einen bestmöglichen Infektionsschutz garantieren.
