Abstract
INTRODUCTION Maternal depression during and after pregnancy is a worldwide public concern. Low omega-3 FAs levels and intake in women during pregnancy were associated with a high rate of maternal depression and poor pregnancy outcomes. The study examines the association between FAs intake and levels and prenatal depressive and anxiety symptoms among pregnant Arabic-speaking women in Oman. METHODOLOGY In 302 pregnant Omani women, level of depression and anxiety is assessed at the 8-12 and 24-28 weeks of pregnancy using the Arabic version of (EPDS). Seafood and the omega-3 FAs intakes of pregnant women has been quantified by using a validated (FFQ). FAs analysis of erythrocytes was carried out using the method of Folch et al. RESULTS: Maternal depression and anxiety symptoms (30.5 % and 26.1 %) were associated with low fish consumption and omega-3 FAs intake with depressive and anxiety symptoms (p = 0.01), Women with antenatal depression or anxiety symptoms had a lower erythrocyte concentration of arachidonic acid (20:4 n-6), (p = 0.01), total omega 6 FAs, (p = 0.03), docosahexaenoic acid (22:6 n-3) (p = 0.03), docosapentaenoic acid (22:5 n-3) (p = 0.04), eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5 n-3) (p = 0.005), total omega 3 FAs (p = 0.005), omega-3 index (p = 0.01), compared to healthy pregnant women. These findings did not change after adjusting for potential confounders. CONCLUSIONS Maternal omega-3 FAs exert a favourable effect on vital perinatal health outcomes. Fish and seafood intake or omega-3 FAs supplementation are highly recommended for women during pregnancy to ensure the well-being of both the mother and fetus.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs) are a significant global public health issue that affects the physical and mental development of every age group, with children and nursing mothers being the most vulnerable. Approximately 50 million of approximately 2 billion people with iodine deficiency (ID) globally exhibit clinical symptoms. Identifying iodine levels using various techniques is important when considering treatment choices. Screening programs and early ID diagnostics are crucial for the follow-up of pregnant women, especially in iodine-deficient nations. There have been calls for universal salt iodization programs, but only approximately 71% of people have access to them. The problem is more common in developing nations; however, there is a shortage of literature on the individual-, family-, and community-level factors influencing iodized salt use in East Africa. This study aimed to investigate individual- and community-level factors of household iodized salt usage in East Africa. METHODS Using Stata 17, this study used the most recent demographic and health survey datasets from twelve East African countries. The survey included a weighted sample of 154,980 households. To assess factors related to iodized salt use in the region, bivariable and multivariable multilevel logistic regressions were used. P values less than or equal to 0.2, and < 0.05 were used in the binary regression, and to deem variables statistically significant in the final model respectively. RESULTS About 87.73% (95% CI = 87.56,87.89) households have utilized iodized household salt. Secondary and above education (AOR = 1.23, 95% CI = 1.17-1.30), household heads with ages of 25-35 years, 36-45 years (AOR = 1.20, 95% CI = 1.12,1.28), 36-45 years (AOR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.09,1.24), and more than 45 years (AOR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.11,1.25), lower and middle wealth (AOR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.76,0.89) and (AOR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.81,0.93), media exposure (AOR = 1.10, 95% CI = 1.07-1.14), female household leaders (AOR = 1.08, 95% CI = 1.04-1.12), access to improved drinking water and better toilet facility (AOR = 2.26, 95% CI = 2.18-2.35) and (AOR = 1.50, 95% CI = 1.44,1.56), larger than five family members (AOR = 0.96, 95% CI = 0.93-0.99), high community level wealth (AOR = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.27-1.87), and low community education(AOR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.33,0.49) were statistically associated with utilization of iodized household salt in East Africa respectively. CONCLUSION In East Africa, household salt iodization is moderately good. To expand the use of iodized salt in the region, access to improved drinking water and toilet facilities, participating family leaders, using the opportunity of family planning services, media sources, and the improvement of the community's socioeconomic level are all needed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Iodine is a crucial trace element for thyroid hormone synthesis. All age groups are affected by iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), especially pregnant women, young women, and children. Iodine deficiency disorder has been recognized as a serious public health issue in Ethiopia. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to assess the availability of iodized salt and associated factors at the household (HH) level in the Farta district, northwest, Ethiopia. METHODS A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted involving 704 participants in Farta District, Northwest Ethiopia, between February and March 2021. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed to recruit participants. Data were collected using pretested and structured questionnaires administered by face-to-face interviewers. The data were entered into Epi-data version 4.6 software and exported into Stata version 14 for the purpose of analysis. Both bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors associated with the availability of iodized salt. Statistical significance was declared at a p-value ≤ 0.05 with a corresponding 95% confidence interval. RESULTS The availability of adequately iodized salt in the study area was 26.6% (CI = 23.8%, 29.4%) of households. Good knowledge about iodine deficiency disorder (IDD) and iodized salt (AOR = 3.85, 95% CI: 3.65, 6.11); short-term storage of salt at the HH [AOR = 2.76, 95% CI: 1.98, 3.23); and stored in covered containers (AOR = 1.57, 95% CI: 1.11, 1.78) were significantly associated with the outcome variable. CONCLUSION The availability of adequate iodized salt at the HH level was far below the WHO target (more than 90%) in the study area. Knowledge about IDD and iodized salt, stored in covered containers, and short-term storage of salt at the HH were significantly associated with the availability of iodized salt. Hence, at the household level, increasing awareness and disseminating information about the benefits of using iodized salt could be effective. Moreover, education about the proper storage and handling of iodized salt, as well as the recommended storage duration of salt in the home, should be provided as part of our community outreach programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Universal salt iodization was started before decades but there are communities using the un-iodized salt till now. More than one-tenth of the Ethiopian community uses un-iodized salt. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to identify the hotspots and associate factors of un-iodized salt availability in Ethiopia based on Ethiopian national household survey data. METHODS We conducted an in-depth analysis of the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey 2016 data. A total of 15,567 households were included in the final analysis. We cleaned and weighed the data using Stata version 16 software and descriptive outputs were reported in graphs and tables. We computed the weighted prevalence of un-iodized salt and prepared it for spatial analysis. Global-level spatial autocorrelation, hotspot analysis using the Getis-Ord Gi* statistics, and spatial interpolation using empirical Bayesian interpolation were executed using ArcGIS 10.3 to predict the magnitude of un-iodized salt at the national level. The binary logistics regression model was used to identify the contributing factors of un-iodized salt utilization. Model goodness of fit was tested with Hosmer and Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test (P = 0.96). Finally, the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% CI was reported to identify significant factors. RESULTS The magnitude of un-iodized salt availability was 14.19% (95% CI: 13.65, 14.75) among Ethiopian households. Un-iodized salt hotspots were found in Afar, Somalia, and Benishangul Gumuz regions. Compared to poorest wealth index: poorer (AOR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.48, 0.64), middle (AOR = 0.51, 95% CI: 0.44, 0.60), richer (AOR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.47, 0.64), and richest (AOR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.50, 0.75); compared to uneducated household head: heads with secondary (AOR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.60, 0.67) and above secondary (AOR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.43, 0.67) education reduced the odds of un-iodized salt viability, while households living in highland (AOR = 1.16, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.29) had increased the odds of un-iodized salt availability. CONCLUSION More than a tenth of the households in Ethiopia uses un-iodized salt. Hotspots of un-iodized salt availability were found in Somali and Afar regions of Ethiopia. Better wealth index and education of the household heads reduces the odds of un-iodized salt availability while living in a high altitude above 2200 m increases the odds of un-iodized salt availability in Ethiopia.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sodium is essential to life. However, its dietary excess is detrimental to the cardiovascular system, and sodium restriction is a crucial step in cardiovascular prevention. Iodine deficiency has been fought worldwide for decades, and substantial success has been achieved introducing the use of iodine-enriched salt. Nevertheless, areas of iodine deficiency persist around the world, both in developing and industrialized countries, and a major concern affecting dietary sodium reduction programs is represented by a possible iodine intake deficiency. There are substantial differences in the source of alimentary iodine among countries, such as iodized salt added, household tap water, seafood, or salt employed in packaged food. It is clear that a sodium-restricted diet can induce differences in terms of iodine intake, depending on the country considered. Moreover, iodine status has undergone relevant changes in many countries in the last years. METHODS Systematic review of literature evidence about the possible effects of sodium restriction on population iodine status. RESULTS To date, the available results are conflicting, depending on country, salt iodization policy, as well as time frame of data collection. However, to ensure an optimal iodine supply by salt fortification, without exceeding the current recommendation by World Health Organization for salt intake, seems to be an achievable goal. CONCLUSION A balanced approach may be obtained by an adequate iodine concentration in fortified salt and by promoting the availability of iodized salt for household consumption and food industry use. In this scenario, updated prospective studies are strongly needed.

Abstract
Multiple salt reduction strategies have been devised from time to time, addressing the issues of hypertension without considering the other essential factors, like the variability of salt sensitivity from the person to person. In this paper, we discuss how high salt consumption is one modifiable risk factor associated with hypertension among Indians, and there needs to be updated cut-off values. A thorough literature search on salt consumption articles on well-known search engines like Cochrane Library, PubMed, Google Scholar and Embase electronic database revealed a paucity of data in this field for India. Several studies revealed that the mean salt intake among the Indian populations ranges between 5.22 and 42.30 g/day. Moreover, among other risk factors analysed, salt intake (≥ 5 gm/day) was significantly associated with the development of hypertension. Although the need to address reduced salt intake for primordial prevention of hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in India is well acknowledged by the key stakeholders, social and cultural beliefs, unorganized food retail sector and lack of existing food policing are some of the potential barriers that affect the progress and employment of such effective strategies. Some multinational food companies have already research is warranted to evaluate the contextual barriers and facilitators and to adopt effective strategies to improve awareness among consumers, to encourage the endorsement of salt reduction by the food industry, and to facilitate the adoption of countrywide consumer-friendly food labelling. We concluded that salt consumption is high in India, although this assessment has been done primarily by subjective methods in India. People all across are recommended the same cut-off value of dietary salt consumption regardless of the diversity in dietary patterns and environmental conditions across the country. There is an urgent need to address these issues through evidence-based population research.

Abstract
Little is known about iodine adequacy and gestational thyroid disorders (GTDs) in Saudi Arabia. This study measured the rates of GTDs and iodine adequacy in 810 healthy Saudi women. Concentrations of serum thyroid hormones and 24-h urine iodine (24-h UIC), and GTDs were diagnosed according to the American Thyroid Association guidelines. Dietary and socioeconomic data to determine factors associated with GTDs and iodine insufficiency were collected. GTDs were detected in 265 women (32.7%) as follows: subclinical (SCH; 20.2%) and overt (OH; 5.8%) hypothyroidism, isolated hypothyroxinemia (ISH; 4.7%) and hyperthyroidism (2%). The SCH (109.2 μg/L; IQR: 77.2-149.7), OH (95.3 μg/L; IQR: 74.3-130.5) and ISH (107.3 μg/L; IQR: 65.5-133.1) groups had median 24-h UIC below the WHO recommended limit, whereas the euthyroid (191.4 μg/L; IQR: 170.03-219.8) and hyperthyroid (159.5 μg/L; IQR: 152.9-238.3) groups were iodine sufficient. Numbers of pregnancies, less education, not consuming iodized salt and not using iodine supplements increased risk of hypothyroidism and ISH. Contrariwise, interval ≥ 3 years from last pregnancy and higher 24-h UIC decreased odds of hypothyroidism and ISH. Moreover, dairy products and egg consumption were markedly lower in all GTD groups. Dairy products and seafood consumption correlated independently with 24-h UIC of the study participants, whereas consuming yogurt, eggs, redfish and shellfish protected against GTDs. In conclusion, GTDs appear to be prevalent in pregnant Saudi women and the hypothyroid and hypothyroxinemia groups had iodine insufficiency. However, consuming iodized salt, iodine supplements, dairy products, seafoods and eggs may protect against GTDs.

Abstract
Background For the synthesis of thyroid hormones, iodine is a crucial trace element. Iodine deficiency disorders affect all groups particularly: pregnant, young women and children. Iodine deficiency disorder has been recognized as a serious public health issue in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study planned to assess iodized salt utilization and associated factors at the household level. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from January 25 to February 24, 2019, in Tach Armachio district, Northwest Ethiopia. A single population proportion formula was used to calculate the sample size and a total of 555 households were sampled. A multistage sampling technique was conducted to select the household. An iodometric titration method was performed. A structured, pretested, and face-to-face interview questionnaire was used to collect data; then, it was entered in Epi Info 7 and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Bivariable and multivariable analyses were done to identify predictor variables. A 95% confidence interval and adjusted odd ratio were reported. P values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant in the multivariable analysis. Results This study showed that iodized salt was adequately utilized by 61.1% (CI = 57%–65%) of households. Good knowledge of iodine deficiency disorder (AOR = 2.25, 95% CI = (1.44, 3.50)), keeping salt in the kitchen house away from fire (AOR = 5.09, 95% CI = (3.25, 7.98)), buying packed salt [AOR = 1.89, 95% CI = (1.12, 3.19)), keeping salt in a covered container (AOR = 2.18, 95% CI = (1.24, 3.81)), and exposing salt to sunlight (AOR = 0.39, 95% CI = (0.23, 0.65)) were significantly associated. Conclusion In the district, adequately iodized salt utilization was low. Therefore, it is necessary to enforce the current law for merchants to sell iodized packed salt and teach the community how to handle it.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the serious maternal and foetal complications associated with iodine deficiency during pregnancy, surveys related to pregnant women in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) are lacking. This study, therefore, measured urine iodine concentrations (UIC) alongside the potential socioeconomic factors contributing towards iodine inadequacy in reproductive age and pregnant Saudi women from the Western province of KSA. METHODS Spot urine samples were collected from 1222 pregnant and 400 age-matched non-pregnant/non-lactating reproductive age women. The socioeconomic characteristics were obtained through a structured questionnaire. The WHO criteria for iodine sufficiency in non-pregnant (100-199 μg/L) and pregnant (150-249 μg/L) women were applied. RESULTS The median UIC in the non-pregnant women (101.64 μg/L; IQR: 69.83-143.55) was at the lowermost WHO recommended cut-off, whereas the pregnant group was iodine deficient (112.99 μg/L; IQR: 81.01-185.57). Moreover, the median UIC was below adequacy across the different trimesters. The use of non-iodised salt significantly increased the risk of iodine deficiency in the non-pregnant (OR = 2.052; 95%CI: 1.118-3.766) and pregnant women (OR = 3.813; 95%CI: 1.992-7.297), whereas taking iodine supplements significantly lowered the risk in both groups (OR = 0.364; 95%CI: 0.172-0.771 and OR = 0.002; 95%CI: 0.001-0.005, respectively). Passive smoking was also an independent risk factor for iodine deficiency in the non-pregnant (OR = 1.818; 95%CI: 1.097-3.014) and pregnant (OR = 1.653; 95%CI: 1.043-2.618) groups. Additionally, BMI correlated independently and significantly with median UIC in the non-pregnant and pregnant populations. However, multiparity (OR = 3.091; 95%CI: 1.707-5.598) and earning below the minimum wage (2.520; 95%CI: 1.038-6.119) significantly increased the risk of iodine deficiency only in the non-pregnant women. CONCLUSIONS This study is the first to show borderline iodine sufficiency in reproductive age Saudi women from the Western province, whereas mild iodine deficiency was observed in the pregnant population and could represent a serious public health problem. This study also advocates the necessity to establish routine iodine dietary advice services by the health authorities to foster adequate iodine intake in pregnant women to avoid the perilous consequences of iodine deficiency on maternal-foetal health.
