Abstract
The gut microbiome is recognized as a key modulator of sepsis development. However, the contribution of the gut mycobiome to sepsis development is still not fully understood. Here, we demonstrated that the level of Candida albicans was markedly decreased in patients with bacterial sepsis, and the supernatant of Candida albicans culture significantly decreased the bacterial load and improved sepsis symptoms in both cecum ligation and puncture (CLP)-challenged mice and Escherichia coli-challenged pigs. Integrative metabolomics and the genetic engineering of fungi revealed that Candida albicans-derived phenylpyruvate (PPA) enhanced the bactericidal activity of macrophages and reduced organ damage during sepsis. Mechanistically, PPA directly binds to sirtuin 2 (SIRT2) and increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) production for eventual bacterial clearance. Importantly, PPA enhanced the bacterial clearance capacity of macrophages in sepsis patients and was inversely correlated with the severity of sepsis in patients. Our findings highlight the crucial contribution of commensal fungi to bacterial disease modulation and expand our understanding of the host-mycobiome interaction during sepsis development.

Abstract
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common complication of pregnancy in women, and its pathogenesis mainly involves disturbances of the neuroendocrine regulation, immune system, neurotransmitters, hormone secretion, and the gut microbiome. Gut microbes play essential physiological and pathological roles in the gut-brain axis' pathways which are involved in various central nervous system (CNS) and psychiatric disorders, including PPD. Numerous studies have identified the fundamental role of the gut-brain axis in the pathogenesis and treatment of PPD patients and also correlates with other pathogenic mechanisms of PPD. Disturbances in gut microbes are associated with the disruption of multiple signaling pathways and systems that ultimately lead to PPD development. This review aimed to elucidate the potential connections between gut microbes and the established PPD network, and this might serve as a guide for the development of new efficient diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic strategies in the management of PPD.

Abstract
Probiotic fermented foods are perceived as contributing to human health; however, solid evidence for their presumptive therapeutic systemic benefits is generally lacking. Here we report that tryptophol acetate and tyrosol acetate, small-molecule metabolites secreted by the probiotic milk-fermented yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus, inhibit hyperinflammation (e.g., "cytokine storm"). Comprehensive in vivo and in vitro analyses, employing LPS-induced hyperinflammation models, reveal dramatic effects of the molecules, added in tandem, on mice morbidity, laboratory parameters, and mortality. Specifically, we observed attenuated levels of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-1α, IL-1β, and TNF-α and reduced reactive oxygen species. Importantly, tryptophol acetate and tyrosol acetate did not completely suppress proinflammatory cytokine generation, rather brought their concentrations back to baseline levels, thus maintaining core immune functions, including phagocytosis. The anti-inflammatory effects of tryptophol acetate and tyrosol acetate were mediated through downregulation of TLR4, IL-1R, and TNFR signaling pathways and increased A20 expression, leading to NF-kB inhibition. Overall, this work illuminates phenomenological and molecular details underscoring anti-inflammatory properties of small molecules identified in a probiotic mixture, pointing to potential therapeutic avenues against severe inflammation.

Abstract
An imbalance in gut microbiota, termed dysbiosis, has been shown to affect host health. Several factors, including dietary changes, have been reported to cause dysbiosis with its associated pathologies that include inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, obesity, depression, and autism. We recently demonstrated the inhibitory effects of artificial sweeteners on bacterial quorum sensing (QS) and proposed that QS inhibition may be one mechanism behind such dysbiosis. QS is a complex network of cell-cell communication that is mediated by small diffusible molecules known as autoinducers (AIs). Using AIs, bacteria interact with one another and coordinate their gene expression based on their population density for the benefit of the whole community or one group over another. Bacteria that cannot synthesize their own AIs secretly "listen" to the signals produced by other bacteria, a phenomenon known as "eavesdropping". AIs impact gut microbiota equilibrium by mediating intra- and interspecies interactions as well as interkingdom communication. In this review, we discuss the role of QS in normobiosis (the normal balance of bacteria in the gut) and how interference in QS causes gut microbial imbalance. First, we present a review of QS discovery and then highlight the various QS signaling molecules used by bacteria in the gut. We also explore strategies that promote gut bacterial activity via QS activation and provide prospects for the future.

Abstract
Yeasts derived from fermented foods have historically been known for their organoleptic properties, enriching nutritional values, and producing bioactive metabolites with therapeutic potential. In this review, we discuss the yeast flora in fermented foods, their functional aspects in fermentation, as well as their probiotic and biotherapeutic properties. These yeasts have numerous physical and biochemical characteristics, such as larger cells as compared to bacteria, a rigid cell wall composed primarily of glucans and mannans, natural resistance to antibiotics, and the secretion of secondary metabolites that are both pleasing to the consumer and beneficial to the host's health and well-being. The review also focused on therapeutic applications of probiotic yeasts derived from fermented foods on infections associated with Candida species. These potential probiotic yeasts present an additional avenue to treat dysbiosis of the gut microbiota and prevent health complications that arise from opportunistic fungal colonization, especially drug-resistant superbugs, which are highlighted in this review.

Abstract
The gut mycobiome (fungi) is a small but crucial component of the gut microbiome in humans. Intestinal fungi regulate host homoeostasis, pathophysiological and physiological processes, and the assembly of the co-residing gut bacterial microbiome. Over the past decade, accumulating studies have characterised the gut mycobiome in health and several pathological conditions. We review the compositional and functional diversity of the gut mycobiome in healthy populations from birth to adulthood. We describe factors influencing the gut mycobiome and the roles of intestinal fungi-especially Candida and Saccharomyces spp-in diseases and therapies with a particular focus on their synergism with the gut bacterial microbiome and host immunity. Finally, we discuss the underappreciated effects of gut fungi in clinical implications, and highlight future microbiome-based therapies that harness the tripartite relationship among the gut mycobiome, bacterial microbiome, and host immunity, aiming to restore a core gut mycobiome and microbiome and to improve clinical efficacy.

Abstract
Starmerella bacillaris is often isolated from environments associated with grape and winemaking. S. bacillaris has many beneficial properties, including the ability to improve the flavor of wine, the production of beneficial metabolites, and the ability to biocontrol. S. bacillaris CC-PT4 (CGMCC No. 23573) was isolated from grape and can inhibit methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and adaptability to harsh environments. In this paper, the whole genome of S. bacillaris CC-PT4 was sequenced and bioinformatics analyses were performed. The S. bacillaris CC-PT4 genome was finally assembled into five scaffolds with a genome size of 9.45 Mb and a GC content of 39.5%. It was predicted that the strain contained 4150 protein-coding genes, of which two genes encoded killer toxin and one gene encoded lysostaphin. It also contains genes encoding F1F0-ATPases, Na(+)/H(+) antiporter, cation/H(+) antiporter, ATP-dependent bile acid permease, major facilitator superfamily (MFS) antiporters, and stress response protein, which help S. bacillaris CC-PT4 adapt to bile, acid, and other stressful environments. Proteins related to flocculation and adhesion have also been identified in the S. bacillaris CC-PT4 genome. Predicted by antiSMASH, two secondary metabolite biosynthesis gene clusters were found, and the synthesized metabolites may have antimicrobial effects. Furthermore, S. bacillaris CC-PT4 carried genes associated with pathogenicity and drug resistance. Overall, the whole genome sequencing and analysis of S. bacillaris CC-PT4 in this study provide valuable information for understanding the biological characteristics and further development of this strain.

Abstract
Human gut and food microbiomes interact during digestion. The outcome of these interactions influences the taxonomical composition and functional capacity of the resident human gut microbiome, with potential consequential impacts on health and disease. Microbe-microbe interactions between the resident and introduced microbiomes, which likely influence host colonisation, are orchestrated by environmental conditions, elements of the food matrix, host-associated factors as well as social cues from other microorganisms. Quorum sensing is one example of a social cue that allows bacterial communities to regulate genetic expression based on their respective population density and has emerged as an attractive target for therapeutic intervention. By interfering with bacterial quorum sensing, for instance, enzymatic degradation of signalling molecules (quorum quenching) or the application of quorum sensing inhibitory compounds, it may be possible to modulate the microbial composition of communities of interest without incurring negative effects associated with traditional antimicrobial approaches. In this review, we summarise and critically discuss the literature relating to quorum sensing from the perspective of the interactions between the food and human gut microbiome, providing a general overview of the current understanding of the prevalence and influence of quorum sensing in this context, and assessing the potential for therapeutic targeting of quorum sensing mechanisms.

Abstract
Gut bacteria employ quorum sensing (QS) to coordinate their activities and communicate with one another, this process relies on the production, detection, and response to autoinducers, which are extracellular signaling molecules. In addition to synchronizing behavioral activities within the species, QS plays a crucial role in the gut host-microbiota interaction. In this review, an overview of classical QS systems is presented as well as the interspecies communication mediated by QS, and recent advances in the host-microbiota interaction mediated by QS. A greater knowledge of the communication network of gut microbiota is not only an opportunity and a challenge for developing nutritional and therapeutic strategies against bacterial illnesses, but also a means for improving gut health.

Abstract
The composition of the microbiota is the focus of many recent publications describing the effects of the microbiota on host health. In recent years, research has progressed further, investigating not only the diversity of genes and functions but also metabolites produced by microorganisms composing the microbiota of various niches and how these metabolites affect and shape the microbial community. While an abundance of data has been published on bacterial interactions, much less data are available on the interactions of bacteria with another component of the microbiota: the fungal community. Although present in smaller numbers, fungi are essential to the balance of this complex microbial ecosystem. Both bacterial and fungal communities produce metabolites that influence their own population but also that of the other. However, to date, interkingdom interactions occurring through metabolites produced by bacteria and fungi have rarely been described. In this review, we describe the major metabolites produced by both kingdoms and discuss how they influence each other, by what mechanisms and with what consequences for the host.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of kefir on colorectal cancer (CRC) via regulating the microbiota structure in the colon using the azoxymethane/dextran sulfate sodium (AOM/DSS) induced CRC mouse model. Mice in the treatment group were orally administered with milk or kefir. The gut microbiota composition was assessed by internally transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) and 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. Furthermore, the biomarkers associated with the gut barrier, inflammation, and cell proliferation regulators were evaluated. The results indicated that the size and the amount of tumor were decreased and the immunity regulators (TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-17a) and oncocyte proliferation indicator (Ki67, NF-κB, and β-catenin) were all decreased. Increased short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) lowered the pH in the colon and helped enhance the intestinal barrier. The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and Ascomycota/Basidiomycota ratio were decreased at the phylum level; the relative abundance of probiotics was increased and the pathogenic bacterium (Clostridium sensu stricto, Aspergillus and Talaromyces) were decreased after supplementation of kefir. Consequently, kefir could regulate the gut microbiota composition and ameliorate AOM/DSS induced colorectal cancer.
