A Physiological Overview of the Demands, Characteristics, and Adaptations of Highly Trained Artistic Swimmers: a Literature Review

Investigation of Factors Related to Sport-Specific Compulsory Element Execution in Artistic Swimming

Artistic swimming is an Olympic sport requiring a high level of fitness, as well as technical skills, artistry, flexibility, a good sense of rhythm, remarkable lung capacity and physical strength. The artistic swimming of adolescents has been largely untouched by the scientific community, so training this group based on scientific data is difficult. Due to the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, this study aimed to measure the technical elements, strength parameters, and swimming performance of young artistic swimmers and to compare swimming performance and strength with the quality of artistic element performances. Hungarian female junior artistic swimmers (14.36 ± 1.01 year) participated in this study. Swimming tests were performed, and three basic elements (body boost, barracuda, and vertical position) were scored. A negative correlation was found between 100 m freestyle swimming times and vertical position scores, as well as between 50 m breaststroke leg swimming times and body boost scores. Moreover, three months of breaststroke leg swim training resulted in improvements in body boost performance. In addition, a positive correlation was found between mean hand grip strength and barracuda scores, as well as between vertical position scores. According to the results of three months of breaststroke leg training, swimming practice improves artistic swimming performance by itself. A correlation was found between strength parameters and the execution of synchro elements, showing the importance of complex training strategies in this sport.

Maximizing choreography and performance in artistic swimming team free routines: the role of hybrid figures

Hybrid figures serve as an important component of artistic swimming, however, no prior research has investigated objective indicators for predicting total scores in competition. This study aimed to identify significance of hybrid figure (HF) elements in predicting total scores in artistic swimming competitions and compare these variables between the Beijing team trials and international official competitions. Eight HF variables were measured in the videos from the international artistic swimming competitions, with calibration and measurement of the variables leg height index and leg angle deviation being performed by means of Kinovea. Multiple linear regression was conducted to predict the total scores based on these variables investigated for the international teams, which showed 5 significant predictors including movement frequency, leg height index, leg angle deviation, mean pattern duration, and rotation frequency. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to determine the differences in the variables between the Beijing team and the international teams (top 5), which showed significant difference on movement frequency, leg angle deviation, leg height index and total score. When designing hybrid figures choreography of team free routine in artistic swimming, coaches should prioritize appropriate movement frequency, pattern changes and rotations over excessively long durations. Overly complex HF choreography may lead to a decline on performance in artistic swimming competition.

Metabolic and Performance Responses to a Simulated Routine in Elite Artistic Swimmers

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the interrelationship between time spent underwater (UW), movement frequency and accompanying blood acid base balance response. Elite artistic swimmers (n = 6) participated in the investigation and were all familiar with the testing procedures. All athletes completed the same choreographed artistic swimming routine. The routine was videoed and the number of movements during each 'lap' of the routine counted. Fingertip capillary blood samples were collected prior to the routine 60 sec post routine for pH, partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2), partial pressure of oxygen (pO2), bicarbonate (HCO₃^-) and potassium (K+). and lactate (La) concentration (mmol/L). On a separate day an incremental exercise test to exhaustion was performed on a cycle ergometer for determination of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). Over half the routine was performed underwater (56 ± 4%). Aside from pCO2 (-1.07 ± 12.29%, p = 0.686), there were significant changes in all variables measured from the BG analysis. VO2peak was significantly correlated to total UW of the routine (r = -0.93; p = 0.007). as well as ∆PO2 r = 0.47 and ∆HCO3 r = 0.51. There was also a significant correlation between total UW and post routine pCO2 (r = 0.86; p = 0.030). There was also a significant correlation between total movements during the routine and post pO2 (r = -0.83; p = 0.044). These data show UW in combination with movement rate during a AS routine imfluence the metabolic response to the exercise. In addition, VO2max represents an important performance variable influencing AS performance.

Chemoreflex Control as the Cornerstone in Immersion Water Sports: Possible Role on Breath-Hold

Immersion water sports involve long-term apneas; therefore, athletes must physiologically adapt to maintain muscle oxygenation, despite not performing pulmonary ventilation. Breath-holding (i.e., apnea) is common in water sports, and it involves a decrease and increases PaO₂ and PaCO₂, respectively, as the primary signals that trigger the end of apnea. The principal physiological O₂ sensors are the carotid bodies, which are able to detect arterial gases and metabolic alterations before reaching the brain, which aids in adjusting the cardiorespiratory system. Moreover, the principal H⁺/CO₂ sensor is the retrotrapezoid nucleus, which is located at the brainstem level; this mechanism contributes to detecting respiratory and metabolic acidosis. Although these sensors have been characterized in pathophysiological states, current evidence shows a possible role for these mechanisms as physiological sensors during voluntary apnea. Divers and swimmer athletes have been found to displayed longer apnea times than land sports athletes, as well as decreased peripheral O₂ and central CO₂ chemoreflex control. However, although chemosensitivity at rest could be decreased, we recently found marked sympathoexcitation during maximum voluntary apnea in young swimmers, which could activate the spleen (which is a reservoir organ for oxygenated blood). Therefore, it is possible that the chemoreflex, autonomic function, and storage/delivery oxygen organ(s) are linked to apnea in immersion water sports. In this review, we summarized the available evidence related to chemoreflex control in immersion water sports. Subsequently, we propose a possible physiological mechanistic model that could contribute to providing new avenues for understanding the respiratory physiology of water sports.

Differences in Left Ventricular Function at Rest and during Isometric Handgrip Exercise in Elite Aquatic Sport Athletes

PURPOSE

Elite swimmers (Sw) have lower diastolic function compared to elite runners, possibly as an adaptation to the aquatic training environment. Water polo players (WP) and artistic swimmers (AS) are exposed to the same hydrostatic pressures as Sw, but are subject to different training intensities, postures, and hemodynamic stressors. Our purpose was to compare resting and exercising cardiac function in elite Sw, WP, and AS, to characterize the influence of training for aquatic-sport on left ventricular (LV) adaptation.

METHODS

Ninety athletes (Sw:20 M/17F; WP:21 M/9F; AS:23F) at the 2019 FINA World Championships volunteered for resting and stress (3 min 30% maximal isometric handgrip) echocardiographic assessment of LV global function and mechanics.

RESULTS

Male Sw displayed greater resting systolic and diastolic function compared to WP; however, both groups maintained stroke volume under high-pressure handgrip stress (Sw:[INCREMENT]-4 ± 12%; WP:[INCREMENT]-1 ± 13%, P = 0.11). There were no differences between female Sw and WP resting LV function, but Sw demonstrated greater function over AS. During isometric handgrip, all female sport athletes maintained stroke volume (Sw:[INCREMENT]3 ± 16%; WP:[INCREMENT]-10 ± 11%; AS:[INCREMENT]-2 ± 14%, P = 0.46), but WP had improved apical rotation ([INCREMENT]1.7 ± 4.5°), which was reduced in AS ([INCREMENT]-3.1 ± 4.5°) and maintained in Sw ([INCREMENT]-0.5 ± 3.8°, P = 0.04). Unlike Sw and WP, AS displayed a unique maintenance of early filling velocity during handgrip exercise (Sw:[INCREMENT]-3.5 ± 14.7 cm/s; WP:[INCREMENT]-15.1 ± 10.8 cm/s; AS:[INCREMENT]1.5 ± 15.3 cm/s, P = 0.02).

CONCLUSION

Among male athletes, Sw display primarily volume-based functional adaptations distinct from the mixed volume-pressure adaptations of WP; however, both groups can maintain stroke volume with increased afterload. Female Sw and WP do not demonstrate sport-specific differences like males, perhaps owing to sex-differences in adaptation, but have greater volume-based adaptations than AS. Lastly, AS display unique functional adaptations, that may be driven by elevated pressures under low-volume conditions.

Study of frequency and type of adverse analytical findings in the different disciplines of aquatics

We aimed to analyze the number and distribution of doping control tests in which a banned substance was reported (i.e., adverse analytical finding) in aquatics. The analysis was performed by using the data provided by the WADA Testing Figure Reports from 2015 to 2019. A total of 79,956 doping control tests were analyzed. Sprint swimming, middle-distance swimming and water polo were the disciplines with the highest number of doping control tests. However, there were no differences in the frequency of adverse findings among disciplines (overall, ∼0.56%, from 0.13 in artistic swimming to 0.76% in sprint swimming). Sprinters and long-distance swimmers presented a higher frequency of beta-2-agonists than the remaining aquatic disciplines (p < 0.05). These results indicate that the type of prohibited substances employed is strongly influenced by the intrinsic characteristics of each aquatic discipline.

Substantiation of Methods for Predicting Success in Artistic Swimming

To develop a methodology for predicting success in artistic swimming based on a set of morphofunctional indicators and indices, 30 schoolgirls, average age (12.00 ± 0.22), were divided into two groups. Group 1: 15 athletes, training experience 4–5 years. Group 2: 15 schoolgirls without training experience. For each participant, we determined the length and weight of the body, the circumference of the chest, vital lung capacity, and the circumference of the biceps in a tense and at rest. The Erisman index, biceps index, and the ratio of proper and actual vital lung capacity was calculated. Them, we conducted the Stange and Genchi hypoxic tests, and flexibility tests for “Split”, “Crab position”, and “Forward bend”. Prediction was conducted using the Wald test with the calculation of predictive coefficients and their informativeness. A predictive table containing results of functional tests and indices of artistic swimming athletes is developed. It includes nine criteria, which informativeness varied in the range of 395.70–31.98. The content of the prediction consists of evaluating the results, determining the appropriate predictive coefficient, and summing these coefficients before reaching one of the predictive thresholds. The conducted research allowed us to substantiate and develop a method for predicting the success of female athletes with the use of morphofunctional indicators and indices.

Body Surface Potential Mapping During Heart Ventricular Repolarization in Male Swimmers and Untrained Persons Under Hypoxic and Hypercapnic Hypoxia

Background: In swimmers, as a result of prolonged breath-holding during swimming, first hypoxic hypoxia (HH) and then hypercapnic hypoxia (HCH) occurs, which may influence the electrical activity of the heart (EAH). What type of normobaric hypoxia more strongly affects the EAH-normocapnic HH or HCH? Methods: The electrical activity of swimmers' hearts (n = 7) and untrained persons (n = 10) was studied by using electrocardiography (ECG) and body surface potential mapping (BSPM) during the period of ventricular repolarization at baseline, at normocapnic HH, at HCH, and in the recovery period. Results: HH led to more significant changes in the EAH in all participants in comparison with HCH. There was no change in the amplitude of T wave_ECG at hypoxic and HCH, but a change in the amplitude of the minimum was noted in BSPM. The minimum in athletes changed by the end of the exposure (from -0.40 ± 0.12 mV to -0.26 ± 0.11 mV, p = 0.001); in the control, it decreased earlier (after 8 minutes of exposure to HH, the amplitude of the minimum was -0.24 ± 0.08 mV, p = 0.026). With HH, the duration of the QT interval in athletes was shortened due to the shortening of the J-Tpeak (from 250 to 188 ms, p = 0.001) and the Tpeak-Tend (from 98 to 86 ms) intervals. In controls, the decrease in the QT interval was due to the J-Tpeak shortening only (from 280 to 200 ms, p = 0.026). Conclusions: In the study of the effect of hypoxia on the EAH during ventricular repolarization, the use of the BSPM has proven to be more informative than the use of traditional ECG. When using potential mapping, more significant changes in ventricular repolarization at HH than at HCH were revealed, whereas the parameters changed less in swimmers compared with the baseline than in controls during both exposures.

Hypoxic Respiratory Chemoreflex Control in Young Trained Swimmers

During an apnea, changes in PaO₂ activate peripheral chemoreceptors to increase respiratory drive. Athletes with continuous apnea, such as breath-hold divers, have shown a decrease in hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR), which could explain the long apnea times; however, this has not been studied in swimmers. We hypothesize that the long periods of voluntary apnea in swimmers is related to a decreased HVR. Therefore, we sought to determine the HVR and cardiovascular adjustments during a maximum voluntary apnea in young-trained swimmers. In fifteen trained swimmers and twenty-seven controls we studied minute ventilation (V_E), arterial saturation (SpO₂), heart rate (HR), and autonomic response [through heart rate variability (HRV) analysis], during acute chemoreflex activation (five inhalations of pure N₂) and maximum voluntary apnea test. In apnea tests, the maximum voluntary apnea time and the end-apnea HR were higher in swimmers than in controls (p < 0.05), as well as a higher low frequency component of HRV (p < 0.05), than controls. Swimmers showed lower HVR than controls (p < 0.01) without differences in cardiac hypoxic response (CHR). We conclude that swimmers had a reduced HVR response and greater maximal voluntary apnea duration, probably due to decreased HVR.

Disruptive Technologies and the Sport Ecosystem: A Few Ethical Questions

The paper addresses the impact of disruptive technologies on the sport ecosystem, represented by four constitutive elements: athletes, coaches, judges, and fans. In particular, the paper argues that to understand the changes introduced by Artificial Intelligence, biotechnologies, and other disruptive technologies, we have to look at this sport ecosystem as a whole and ask ethical questions related to how each of these elements—and not just the athlete—is affected by them. The paper discusses some of the real-life applications of disruptive technologies that are being currently introduced within different sports and works out their most critical aspects both in terms of positive and negative impact on the sport ecosystem as we know it.

Changes in Lung Diffusing Capacity of Elite Artistic Swimmers During Training

Artistic swimmers (AS) are exposed to repeated apnoeas in the aquatic environment during high intensity exercise provoking specific physiological responses to training, apnoea, and immersion. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in lung diffusing capacity in AS pre-, mid- and post-training in a combined session of apnoeic swimming, figures and choreography. Eleven elite female AS from the Spanish national team were the study's participants. The single-breath method was used to measure lung diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DL_CO) and one-way repeated measures ANOVA was utilized to evaluate the statistical analysis. Basal values of DL_CO were higher than normal for their age and height (33.6±4.9 mL·min^-1·mmHg^-1; 139±19%) and there were a significant interaction between DL_CO and AS training (ŋ² _p=0.547). After the apnoeic swimming (mid-training) there was an increase in DL_CO from basal to 36.7±7.3 mL·min^-1·mmHg^-1 (p=0.021), and after the figures and choreography (post-training) there was a decrease compared to mid-training (32.3±4.6 mL·min^-1·mmHg^-1, p=0.013). Lung diffusing capacity changes occur during AS training, including a large increase after apnoeic swimming. There were no differences in lung diffusing capacity from pre- to post-training, although large inter-individual variability was observed.
