Abstract
The One Health concept is increasingly employed to combat zoonotic diseases. This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding One Health and zoonotic diseases among key sector professionals to identify gaps and opportunities for enhancing One Health strategies in Bhutan. A cross-sectional, facility-based study was used to conduct a nationwide online questionnaire survey using a validated and pre-tested questionnaire among professionals from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and universities. Descriptive and summary statistics were calculated. Respondents were categorised into binary groups based on their knowledge, attitude, and practice scores relative to the mean. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the demographic factors associated with knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding One Health and zoonotic diseases. The survey achieved a 35% response rate, with 964 responses. The majority of respondents demonstrated above-average knowledge (63%), attitudes (50%), and practices (66%) regarding One Health. Professionals with master's degree or higher (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR] = 2.39; 95% Confidence Interval [CI] = 1.16-5.12) were more likely to have above-average knowledge. Regarding zoonotic diseases, approximately half of the respondents had above-average knowledge (51%), attitudes (52%), and two-thirds (66%) had above-average practices. Professionals with mid-level job experience (6-10 years; AOR = 2.13; 95% CI = 1.37-3.30 and 11 to 15 years; AOR = 2.11; 95% CI = 1.31-3.40) were more likely to possess above-average knowledge. Gaps in training, communication, funding, research, and collaborations were identified. Targeted educational interventions, enhanced communication, strengthened collaboration, expanded research, and improved funding are essential for improving One Health approaches and zoonotic disease prevention and control in Bhutan. Our study findings provide valuable insights that can inform global efforts to enhance One Health systems, particularly in regions where resources are limited but disease risks are significant.

Abstract
The burden of animal disease is widespread globally and is especially severe for developing countries dependent on livestock production. Ethiopia has the largest livestock population in Africa and the second-largest human population on the continent. Ethiopia is one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa; however, much of the population still lives in extreme poverty, and most households depend on agriculture. Animal disease negatively affects domestic livestock production and limits growth potential across the domestic agricultural supply chain. This research investigates the economic effects of livestock disease burden in Ethiopia by employing a computable general equilibrium model in tandem with animal health loss estimates from a compartmental livestock population model. Two scenarios for disease burden are simulated to understand the effects of improved animal health on domestic production, prices, trade, gross domestic product (GDP), and economic welfare in Ethiopia. Results show that improved animal health may increase Ethiopian GDP by up to 3.6%, which improves national welfare by approximately $US 2.5 billion. This research illustrates the economic effects of improved livestock health, which is critical for Ethiopian households and the national economy.

Abstract
Background Strategy and mechanism are crucial components of One Health governance in China, designed to address the interconnected health issues between humans, animals, and the environment. This study aims to evaluate China's current One Health governance framework, identify key strengths and gaps, and provide recommendations for establishing a more integrated and effective system. Methods A qualitative approach was employed, including in-depth interviews, policy analysis, and a review of existing literature, to evaluate the strengths and gaps in China's One Health framework. Results The analysis identified progress and challenges in six key areas: (1) political commitment: strong national support exists, but lacks a unified strategy; (2) legislation and regulation: notable legislative efforts are in place, yet they remain fragmented; (3) leadership building: effective leadership structures have been established during crises but are not institutionalized; (4) strategic planning: initial regional planning is underway, but a comprehensive national focus is needed; (5) coordination and communication: mechanisms exist but require formalized, consistent information-sharing channels; (6) stakeholder engagement: public and academic awareness is growing, yet local community involvement needs strengthening. Conclusion To advance its One Health governance, China must focus on creating a unified strategy, enhancing interdepartmental coordination, and deepening stakeholder engagement, ensuring its alignment with international standards and improving public health outcomes.

Abstract
Brucellosis is a neglected zoonotic disease affecting livestock and humans that remains endemic in Ethiopia. Despite its prevalence, only a few studies have identified Brucella species circulating in livestock in the country. This study aimed to determine the Brucella species responsible for infections in livestock in the Afar region of Ethiopia and characterize the isolates using whole-genome single nucleotide polymorphism (wgSNP) analysis and in silico multi-locus sequence typing (MLST). Comparisons were made between Ethiopian Brucella and regional and global isolates to determine their phylogenetic relationships. Surveys conducted in May and October-November 2022 in six villages of the Amibara district involved the collection of vaginal swabs (n = 231) and milk samples (n = 17) from 32 sheep and 199 goats kept by 143 pastoral households reporting recent abortions in the animals. Brucella melitensis was detected in three sheep and 32 goats, i.e., 15% (35/231) of animals across 20% (29/143) of households using bacterial culture and PCR-based methods (bcsp31, AMOS, and Bruce-ladder multiplex PCR). Of the 35 positive animals, B. melitensis was isolated from 24 swabs, while the remaining 11 were culture-negative and detected only by PCR. The genomic DNA of the 24 isolates was sequenced using Illumina Novaseq 6000 and assembled using the SPAdes pipeline. Nine- and 21-locus MLST identified 23 isolates as genotype ST12, while one isolate could not be typed. The wgSNP-based phylogenetic analysis revealed that the Ethiopian isolates clustered within the African clade and were closely related to isolates from Somalia. Several virulence factors responsible for adhesion, intracellular survival, and regulatory functions were detected in all isolates. No antimicrobial resistance genes associated with resistance to drugs commonly used for treating brucellosis were detected. Since B. melitensis is prevalent in sheep and goats, vaccination with the B. melitensis Rev-1 vaccine is the recommended strategy in these pastoral systems to protect animal and human health.

Abstract
Improper disposal of solid waste, predominantly illegal dumping, can lead to severe air and water pollution, land degradation, climate change, and health hazards due to the persistence of hazardous materials. As a result, it is threatening public and animal health, environmental sustainability, and economic development. The One Health approach, which acknowledges the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, offers a comprehensive solution. This systematic review examines the impact of improper municipal solid waste on fostering One Health approaches at the national level of Ethiopia by identifying key challenges and opportunities. Publications were retrieved from peer-reviewed, indexed journal publications, government documents (policies, proclamations, regulations, and guidelines), and credible non-governmental organization publications from selected electronic databases (Google scholar, PubMed, EMBASE, Global Health, Web of Science, etc.), and governmental offices. Despite efforts to advance the One Health approach in Ethiopia through the formation of the National One Health Steering Committee and technical working groups, implementation is hindered by challenges such as poor sectoral integration, insufficient advocacy, financial constraints, and limited research. These challenges contribute to worsening zoonotic and infectious diseases and environmental issues due to inadequate solid waste management. Nonetheless, opportunities exist through One Health integration via holistic programs, interdisciplinary collaboration, community engagement, policy enhancement, institutional capacity building, and public-private partnerships. Therefore, enhancing sectoral integration and increasing advocacy efforts and securing financial support is necessary to back waste management initiatives and related research. Further research is crucial to understand the impact of solid waste management and the potential benefits of the One Health approach in Ethiopia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Persistent challenges of fragmented, food safety management in low- and middle-income countries underscore the need for more robustly coordinated mechanisms. National food safety technical working groups, operating under a One Health framework, offer potential in streamlining coordination efforts to effectively address these challenges. However, more clarity regarding their formation and functioning is important for understanding how to best establish and support such groups. The aim of this study is to systematically document the development process of established groups in Vietnam and Ethiopia. METHODS We assess the process used to establish and support the technical working groups against six critical success factors for multisectoral collaboration: drive change, define, design, realise, relate, and capture success. To do so, we review meeting minutes, Terms of Reference, and other related publications. RESULTS The analysis underscores the importance of financial and technical support by development partners in initiating working groups while also highlighting the challenge posed by the absence of legal frameworks to secure government commitment. Embedding the technical working groups within existing government structures - such as One Health platforms - from the outset could help to ensure the active participation and sustainability of such groups. CONCLUSION Both Vietnam and Ethiopia have established operational and institutionalized technical working groups to bolster national food safety efforts under a One Health framework. The approaches employed in these countries could serve as valuable models for others seeking to establish comparable multisectoral collaborative mechanisms to address emerging health risks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Zoonoses are infectious diseases that are transmitted from animals to humans. Studying the knowledge, perceptions and practices of communities related to zoonoses and the associated risk factors is crucial for effective control and prevention. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, perceptions, and practices of respondents on zoonoses and the associated risk factors in and around Chiro town, Ethiopia. Zoonotic diseases, such as rabies, anthrax, bovine tuberculosis, and brucellosis, pose a direct threat to health and livelihoods in the communities where they occur. These diseases emerge due to a combination of human-animal interactions, migration, and contact with wildlife and their respective parasites and vectors. Hence, recognizing residents' perceptions, knowledge, and practices is crucial for effectively minimizing risks. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2020 to July 2021 in and around Chiro town using a pretested close-ended questionnaire. A total of 350 respondents were selected using simple random sampling methods. The questionnaire included information on the sociodemographic status of the respondents and questions concerning the knowledge, perceptions, and practices of the participants regarding the selected zoonotic diseases. The associations of knowledge, perceptions, and practices related to zoonoses with zoonotic risk factors were analysed using chi-square tests. RESULTS The study revealed that 82.9% of the respondents had knowledge of bovine tuberculosis, followed by knowledge of rabies (80%), knowledge of anthrax (45.1%), and knowledge of brucellosis (24.3%). Males had greater knowledge of bovine tuberculosis (84.8%), followed by rabies (79.8%) and anthrax (48.6%), while females had greater knowledge of brucellosis (23.6%). The most cited source of information was radio (68%). Most respondents mentioned the outbreaks of rabies (62.5%), bovine tuberculosis (53.2%), anthrax (35.6%), and brucellosis (15.7%). Respondents with higher educational levels and urban residents had more knowledge of zoonoses. More than 75% of respondents had a good perception of the transmission of zoonotic disease from animals, and the practice of consuming raw milk or raw/undercooked meat and sharing the same house with animals was high. CONCLUSION The majority of respondents reported that they had knowledge of bovine tuberculosis and rabies, but lower knowledge and perceptions were reported for anthrax and brucellosis. These findings illustrate the need for collaboration among animal, human and environmental health offices in one health approach to prevent and control zoonotic disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Angiostrongyliasis is a highly dangerous infectious disease. Angiostrongylus cantonensis larvae migrate to the mouse brain and cause symptoms, such as brain swelling and bleeding. Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) are novel targets for the control of parasitic infections. However, the role of these molecules in A. cantonensis infection has not been fully clarified. METHODS In total, 32 BALB/c mice were randomly divided into four groups, and the infection groups were inoculated with 40 A. cantonensis larvae by gavage. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and RNA library construction were performed on brain tissues from infected mice. Differential expression of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and mRNAs in brain tissues was identified by high-throughput sequencing. The pathways and functions of the differentially expressed lncRNAs were determined by Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Gene Ontology (GO) analyses. The functions of the differentially expressed lncRNAs were further characterized by lncRNA‒microRNA (miRNA) target interactions. The potential host lncRNAs involved in larval infection of the brain were validated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT‒PCR). RESULTS The pathological results showed that the degree of brain tissue damage increased with the duration of infection. The transcriptome results showed that 859 lncRNAs and 1895 mRNAs were differentially expressed compared with those in the control group, and several lncRNAs were highly expressed in the middle-late stages of mouse infection. GO and KEGG pathway analyses revealed that the differentially expressed target genes were enriched mainly in immune system processes and inflammatory response, among others, and several potential regulatory networks were constructed. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed the expression profiles of lncRNAs in the brains of mice after infection with A. cantonensis. The lncRNAs H19, F630028O10Rik, Lockd, AI662270, AU020206, and Mexis were shown to play important roles in the infection of mice with A. cantonensis infection.

Abstract
The problem of zoonoses diseases is a global public and veterinary health concern. Globally coordinated and well-established research efforts are essential to successfully fighting and reducing the health burden of zoonoses. In our study area, the interplay of intense livestock animals, agricultural activities, and poor health services characterized the high risks of zoonotic diseases. Thus, people suffer from easily preventable diseases with hygiene and good-quality food. The main objectives of this study were to: (i) evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and prevention practices of people handling farm animals and their products toward common zoonotic diseases; and (ii) estimate the associated risk factors influencing their knowledge, attitude, and prevention practices. A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2021 to August 2022. A simple random sampling technique was followed to select respondents. Multivariable logistic regression model analysis was conducted using STATA version 14. The overall level of knowledge, attitude, and prevention practice for the major zoonotic disease was 52.5%, 68.6%, and 39.4%, respectively. Rabies, tuberculosis, taeniasis, anthrax, and brucellosis were the major zoonotic diseases selected by respondents in the study areas. The age of respondents, training status, educational status, and farm location were significantly (P < 0.05) associated with the level of knowledge and prevention practice against zoonotic diseases. This study revealed that the level of knowledge, attitude, and prevention practices for major zoonotic diseases in Bahir Dar City were relatively poor. Therefore, a concerted effort among various government and nongovernment stakeholders, including veterinarians, public health officials, and environmental experts, is needed to create and raise awareness among livestock producers about the transmission and control methods and the economic and public health importance of zoonotic diseases.

Abstract
Introduction International organizations now actively promote and implement One Health collaborative approaches to prevent, detect, and control diseases in humans and animals, recognizing the critical importance of the veterinary and agricultural sectors. Moreover, Veterinary Services are chronically under-resourced, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Given the importance of National Veterinary Services to food security, nutrition, poverty alleviation, and global health security, strengthening veterinary capacity is a priority for the international community. The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) outlines a set of minimum competencies veterinarians need to support National Veterinary Services effectively. To improve the quality of veterinary education, Ethiopia has developed a new 2020 national curriculum that is harmonized with the WOAH competencies. Methods A mixed methods needs assessment was conducted to identify barriers and challenges that Ethiopian veterinary medicine programs have faced in implementing the new WOAH-harmonized national curriculum. Representatives from active veterinary programs granting a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree were invited to share their experiences via an online survey and follow-up focus group discussion. Results Fourteen veterinary programs, representing 93% of eligible programs nationwide, participated in the needs assessment. Quantitative analysis indicated that the most difficult topics associated with the new curriculum included Organization of Veterinary Services (Competency 3.1), Inspection and Certification Procedures (3.2), and practical applications of the regulatory framework for disease prevention and control (multiple competencies). Challenges associated with specific instructional methodologies, particularly the facilitation of off-site (private and public sector) student training, were also perceived as barriers to implementation. Focus group discussions elucidated reasons for these challenges and included limitations in faculty expertise, resource constraints (e.g., supplies, infrastructure), and access to off-site facilities for hands-on teaching. Conclusion The results of this needs assessment will be used to identify and prioritize solutions to implementation challenges, helping Ethiopian veterinary medicine programs move the new WOAH-harmonized curriculum from theory to practice. As veterinarians are integral partners in advancing One Health, strengthening the capacity of Veterinary Services can ultimately safeguard animal and human health, grow economies, and improve lives.

Abstract
Food safety remains a significant global public health concern, with the risk of unsafe food varying worldwide. The economies of several low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) heavily rely on livestock, posing a challenge to ensuring the production of safe food. This review discusses our understanding of pre-harvest critical issues related to food safety in LMICs, specifically focusing on animal-derived food. In LMICs, food safety regulations are weak and inadequately enforced, primarily concentrating on the formal market despite a substantial portion of the food sector being dominated by informal markets. Key critical issues at the farm level include animal health, a low level of good agriculture practices, and the misuse of antimicrobials. Effectively addressing foodborne diseases requires a comprehensive One Health framework. Unfortunately, the application of the One Health approach to tackle food safety issues is notably limited in LMICs. In conclusion, considering that most animal-source foods from LMICs are marketed through informal channels, food safety legislation and policies need to account for this context. Interventions aimed at reducing foodborne bacterial pathogens at the farm level should be scalable, and there should be strong advocacy for the proper implementation of pre-harvest interventions through a One Health approach.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is an unmet need for One Health (OH) surveillance and reporting systems for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in resource poor settings. District health information system, version 2 (DHIS2), is a globally recognized digital surveillance platform which has not been widely utilized for AMR data yet. Our study aimed to understand the local stakeholders' viewpoints on DHIS2 as OH-AMR surveillance platform in Jimma, Ethiopia which will aid its further context specific establishment. METHODS We performed an exploratory qualitative study using semi-structured key informant interviews (KIIs) in Jimma Zone at Southwest Ethiopia. We interviewed 42 OH professionals between November 2020 and February 2021. Following verbatim transcription of the audio recordings of KIIs, we conducted thematic analysis. RESULTS We identified five major themes which are important for understanding the trajectory of OH-AMR surveillance in DHIS2 platform. The themes were: (1) Stakeholders' current knowledge on digital surveillance platforms including DHIS2. (2) Stakeholders' perception on digital surveillance platform including DHIS2. (3) Features suggested by stakeholders to be included in the surveillance platform. (4) Comments from stakeholders on system implementation challenges. (5) Stakeholders' perceived role in the process of implementation. Despite several barriers and challenges, most of the participants perceived and suggested DHIS2 as a suitable OH-AMR surveillance platform and were willing to contribute at their current professional roles. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrates the potential of the DHIS2 as a user friendly and acceptable interoperable platform for OH-AMR surveillance if the technology designers accommodate the stakeholders' concerns. Piloting at local level and using performance appraisal tool in all OH disciplines should be the next step before proceeding to workable format.

Abstract
Introduction One Health is a concept that establishes the link between humans, animals and the environment in a collaborative approach. Since One Health's inception, several interventions have been developed in many regions and countries worldwide to tackle complex health problems, including epidemics and pandemics. In the developed world, many collaborative platforms have been created with an international strategy to address issues specific or not to their environment. Unfortunately, there is a lack of synthesis on the challenges and opportunities Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) face. Methods Following The Preferred Reporting Elements for PRISMA Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), we conducted a systematic review. We applied a search strategy to electronic bibliographic databases (PubMed, Embase, Global Health, Web of Science and CINAHL). We assessed the included articles' quality using the Mixed Methods Appraisal tool (MMAT). Results and discussion A total of 424 articles were initially identified through the electronic database search. After removing duplicates (n = 68), 356 articles were screened for title and abstract, and 16 were retained for full-text screening. The identified barriers were the lack of political will, weak governance and lack of human, financial and logistics resources. Concerning the enablers, we listed the existence of a reference framework document for One Health activities, good coordination between the different sectors at the various levels, the importance of joint and multisectoral meetings that advocated the One Health approach and the Availability of funds and adequate resources coupled with the support of Technical and Financial partners. Conclusion One Health strategy and interventions must be implemented widely to address the rising burden of emerging infectious diseases, zoonotic diseases, and antimicrobial resistance. Addressing those challenges and reinforcing the enablers to promote managing global health challenges is necessary. Abstract
BACKGROUND Although antimicrobial resistance (AMR) bacteria present a significant and ongoing public health challenge, its magnitude remains poorly understood, especially in many parts of the developing countries. Hence, this review was conducted to describe the current pooled prevalence of drug resistance, multidrug- resistance (MDR), and Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae, Acinetobacter, and Pseudomonas species in humans, the environment, and animals or food of animal origin in Ethiopia. METHODS PubMed, Google Scholar, and other sources were searched for relevant articles as per the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. A critical appraisal for screening, eligibility, and inclusion in the meta-analysis was made based on the Joanna Briggs Institute's (JBI) essential appraisal tools. The meta-analysis was done on Statistical Software Package (STATA) version 17.0. RESULTS A total of 33 research articles were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella species, Acinetobacter, and Pseudomonas species were the most frequently reported bacteria from two or more sources. More than 50% of Klebsiella species and 25% to 89% of Escherichia coli from two or more sources were resistant to all analysed antibiotics, except carbapenems. Fifty-five percent (55%) to 84% of Acinetobacter species and 33% to 79% of Pseudomonas species from human and environmental sources were resistant to all analyzed antibiotics. Carbapenem resistance was common in Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas species (38% to 64%) but uncommon in Enterobacteriaceae (19% to 44%). Acinetobacter species (92%), Klebsiella species (86%), and Pseudomonas species (79%) from human sources, and Proteus species (92%), and Acinetobacter species (83%), from environmental sources, were the common multidrug-resistant isolates. About 45% to 67% of E. coli, Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, and Pseudomonas species from human and environmental sources were ESBL producers. CONCLUSION Our review report concluded that there was a significant pooled prevalence of drug resistance, MDR, and ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae, Acinetobacter, and Pseudomonas species from two or more sources. Hence, our finding underlines the need for the implementation of integrated intervention approaches to address the gaps in reducing the emergence and spread of antibiotic- resistant bacteria.

Abstract
One Health is the collaborative efforts of multiple disciplines to attain optimal health for people, animals and the environment, a concept that historically owes much to the study of brucellosis, including recent political and ethical considerations. Brucellosis One Health actors include Public Health and Veterinary Services, microbiologists, medical and veterinary practitioners and breeders. Brucellosis awareness, and the correct use of diagnostic, epidemiological and prophylactic tools is essential. In brucellosis, One Health implementation faces inherited and new challenges, some aggravated by global warming and the intensification of breeding to meet growing food demands. In endemic scenarios, disease awareness, stakeholder sensitization/engagement and the need to build breeder trust are unresolved issues, all made difficult by the protean characteristics of this zoonosis. Extended infrastructural weaknesses, often accentuated by geography and climate, are critically important. Capacity-building faces misconceptions derived from an uncritical adoption of control/eradication strategies applied in countries with suitable means, and requires additional reference laboratories in endemic areas. Challenges for One Health implementation include the lack of research in species other than cattle and small ruminants, the need for a safer small ruminant vaccine, the need to fill in the infrastructure gap, the need for realistic capacity-building, the creation of reference laboratories in critical areas, and the stepwise implementation of measures not directly transposed from the so-called developed countries.

Abstract
Foodborne pathogens are the most common cause of foodborne disease worldwide. They contaminate food at all stages of the food chain, at the agricultural production level (soil and irrigation), from animal sources or at the time of preparation by food handlers. Therefore, food security is a critical issue that affects everyone in the world. Current studies indicate that the problem is more severe in low-income countries like Ethiopia. The majority of studies in Ethiopia have been conducted partially on human, animal or environmental samples with conventional culture-based diagnostic methods. Therefore, this review was conducted to gather information on the main foodborne pathogens and identify gaps in their traceability. Clinically important foodborne pathogens in Ethiopia include (A. lubmbricoids, Toxocara spp., H. nana. E. histolytica/dispar, G. intestinalis, H. diminuta and C. belli), bacteria (Salmonella spp, E. coli O157:H7, B. anthracis, Yersinia, C. perfringens, Klebsiella spp. M. paratuberculosis, and L. monocytogenes), and viruses like (rotaviruses, enteroviruses and astroviruses, hepatitis E virus). In Ethiopia, all isolated foodborne bacterial pathogens showed high rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In particular, the most studied foodborne pathogens, Staphylococcus spp., Salmonella spp., and E. coli from specific sources, showing high levels of resistance to most of the antibiotics prescribed in Ethiopia. The occurrence and persistence of AMR in food is one of the main factors causing the spread of antimicrobial resistance in different compartments, humans, animals and the environment. Therefore, strategies of coordination and struggle from a One Health perspective is an urgent strategy to control antibiotic resistance in order to achieve better outcomes for human and animal health.

Abstract
Simple Summary Common toads, including the natterjack toad (Epidalea calamita), have been used since ancient times for remedies, and thus constitute excellent biological material for pharmacological and natural product research. After a previous analysis of the historical-folk therapeutic use of amphibians in Spain, a histological study was carried out to provide a complementary ethnopharmacological view through the analysis of the integumentary heterogeneity of the serous (venom) and mucous glands from two adult specimens. Plastic-embedded semi-thin sections showed that serous/venom glands are cytologically homogeneous in spite of their genetic and biochemical complexity, leading to a cocktail that remains stored until extrusion. On the contrary, mucous glands, working continuously, show a more complex cytological variation and regional heterogeneity, which suggests an adaptive variability, leading to an invisible topographic map of skin toxicity. Natterjack toad-based folk remedies are usually extracted from the whole animal as a therapeutic unit in ethnoveterinary practice. However, a new ethnopharmacological vision could emerge from the study of tegumentary regional variation. Abstract Common toads have been used since ancient times for remedies and thus constitute excellent biological material for pharmacological and natural product research. According to the results of a previous analysis of the therapeutic use of amphibians in Spain, we decided to carry out a histological study that provides a complementary view of their ethnopharmacology, through the natterjack toad (Epidalea calamita). This species possesses a characteristic integument, where the parotoid glands stand out, and it has been used in different ethnoveterinary and ethnomedical practices. This histological study of their glandular variability allow us to understand the stages through which the animal synthesises and stores a heterogeneous glandular content according to the areas of the body and the functional moment of the glands. To study tegumentary cytology, a high-resolution, plastic embedding, semi-thin (1 micron) section method was applied. Up to 20 skin patches sampled from the dorsal and ventral sides were processed from the two adult specimens collected, which were roadkill. Serous/venom glands display a genetic and biochemical complexity, leading to a cocktail that remains stored (and perhaps changes over time) until extrusion, but mucous glands, working continuously to produce a surface protection layer, also produce a set of active protein (and other) substances that dissolve into mucous material, making a biologically active covering. This study provides a better understanding of the use of traditional remedies in ethnoveterinary medicine.
