Sudden unexpected infant death in Jordan and the home environment

BACKGROUND

The aim of this study was to evaluate maternal common practice for infant sleep care and the home environment, in order to explore the major risk factors associated with sudden unexpected infant death in Jordan.

METHODS

Data were collected via semi-structured questionnaire interview to investigate the sociodemographic features, infant sleep practices and home environments. The sample included 604 mothers with infants <1 year old. Descriptive statistics were generated.

RESULTS

Sleep practices were identified as leading factors in unexpected infant death. They included infant head covering (84%), heavy bedding with multiple quilts (81%) or blankets (67%), and co-bedding (66%). Environmental risk factors included high incidence of smoking, exposure to toxic solid fuel heaters during winter and inadequate room ventilation.

CONCLUSION

Factors leading to unexpected infant death were high in Jordan. Unsafe infant sleeping practices and poor environmental factors put infants at high risk of sudden death. Lack of awareness of risk factors increases the risk.

Earth Abides Arsenic Biotransformations

Arsenic is the most prevalent environmental toxic element and causes health problems throughout the world. The toxicity, mobility, and fate of arsenic in the environment are largely determined by its speciation, and arsenic speciation changes are driven, at least to some extent, by biological processes. In this article, biotransformation of arsenic is reviewed from the perspective of the formation of Earth and the evolution of life, and the connection between arsenic geochemistry and biology is described. The article provides a comprehensive overview of molecular mechanisms of arsenic redox and methylation cycles as well as other arsenic biotransformations. It also discusses the implications of arsenic biotransformation in environmental remediation and food safety, with particular emphasis on groundwater arsenic contamination and arsenic accumulation in rice.

Bioaccumulation and biovolatilization of various elements using filamentous fungus Scopulariopsis brevicaulis

Biovolatilization and bioaccumulation capabilities of different elements by microscopic filamentous fungus Scopulariopsis brevicaulis were observed. Accumulation of As(III), As(V), Se(IV), Se(VI), Sb(III), Sb(V), Te(IV), Te(VI), Hg(II), Tl(I) and Bi(III) by S. brevicaulis was quantified by analysing the amount of elements in biomass of the fungus using ICP AAS. The highest amounts of bioaccumulated metal(loid)s were obtained as follows: Bi(III) > Te(IV) > Hg(II) > Se(IV) > Te(VI) > Sb(III) at different initial contents, with Bi(III) accumulation approximately 87%. The highest percentages of volatilization were found using Hg(II) (50%) and Se(IV) (46·5%); it was also demonstrated with all studied elements. This proved the biovolatilization ability of microscopic fungi under aerobic conditions. The highest removed amount was observed using Hg(II) (95·30%), and more than 80% of Se(IV), Te(IV), Bi(III) and Hg(II) was removed by bioaccumulation and biovolatilization, which implies the possibilities of use of these processes for bioremediations. There were reported significant differences between bioaccumulation and biovolatilization of almost all applied metal(loid)s if valence is mentioned.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

Microbial accumulation and volatilization are natural processes involved in biogeochemical cycles of elements. Despite their impact on mobility, bioavailability and toxicity of various metal(loid)s, only few papers deal with these processes under aerobic conditions with microscopic fungi. Thus, the proving of ability of microscopic fungus Scopulariopsis brevicaulis to accumulate and transform metals and metalloids by methylation or alkylation and quantification of these processes were demonstrated. The results can provide basic information on natural elements cycling and background for more specific studies focusing, for example, on application of these processes in mitigation of metal(loid) contamination.

Demethylation of methylarsonic acid by a microbial community

Arsenic is one of the most widespread environmental carcinogens and has created devastating human health problems worldwide, yet little is known about mechanisms of biotransformation in contaminated regions. Methylarsonic acid [MAs(V)], extensively utilized as an herbicide, is largely demethylated to more toxic inorganic arsenite, which causes environmental problems. To understand the process of demethylation of methylarsenicals, soil samples commonly used on Florida golf courses were studied. Several soil extracts were found to demethylate MAs(V) to inorganic arsenite [As(III)]. From these extracts, a bacterial isolate was capable of reducing MAs(V) to MAs(III) but not of demethylating to As(III). A second bacterial isolate was capable of demethylating MAs(III) to As(III) but not of reducing MAs(V). A mixed culture could carry out the complete process of reduction and demethylation, demonstrating that demethylation of MAs(V) to As(III) is a two-step process. Analysis of the 16S ribosomal DNA sequences of the two organisms identified the MAs(V)-reducing and the MAs(III)-demethylating isolates as belong to Burkholderia and Streptomyces species respectively. This is the first report of a novel pathway of degradation of a methylarsenical herbicide by sequential reduction and demethylation in a microbial soil community, which we propose plays a significant role in the arsenic biogeocycle.

Identification and quantification of arsC genes in environmental samples by using real-time PCR

The arsC gene is responsible for the first step in arsenate biotransformation encoding the enzyme arsenate reductase. The quantitative real-time PCR method was developed to quantify the abundance of the arsC genes in environmental samples contaminated with arsenic. Two sets of primers that showed high specificity for the target arsC gene were designed based on consensus sequences from 13 bacterial species. The arsC gene was used as an external standard instead of total DNA in the calibration curve for real-time PCR, which was linear over six orders of magnitude and the detection limit was estimated to be about three copies of the gene. Soil samples from arsenic contaminated sites were screened for arsC genes by using PCR and showed the presence of this gene. The copy numbers of the gene ranging from 0.88 x 10(4) to 1.56 x 10(5) per ng total DNA were found in eight arsenic contaminated samples. Soil samples from a bioreactor containing pulp mill biomass and high concentration of arsenate showed a tenfold higher count of arsC gene copies than soil samples collected underground from an arsenic-rich gold mine.
