Kinematic and hydrodynamic analyses of turning manoeuvres in penguins: body banking and wing upstroke generate centripetal force

Fossil and modern penguin tarsometatarsi: cavities, vascularity, and resilience

Penguin tarsometatarsi are shortened and flattened, and studies devoted to the internal characteristics of these composite bones are very limited. Therefore, we present here a comprehensive, x-ray-microscopy-based analysis based on tarsometatarsi of Eocene stem Sphenisciformes from Seymour Island (Antarctic Peninsula) as well as recent Aptenodytes forsteri, A. patagonicus, and Pygoscelis adeliae penguins. Our study focuses on four aspects: size variability of the medullary cavities, vascularization patterns with emphasis on diaphyseal vessels, cross-sectional anisotropy, and diaphyseal resistance to bending forces. Small-sized Eocene penguins (Delphinornis and Marambiornopsis) show well-developed tarsometatarsal medullary cavities, whereas the cavities of "giant" early Sphenisciformes are either smaller (Palaeeudyptes) or show a conspicuous intermetatarsal size gradient (Anthropornis). Extant penguins exhibit a decrease in cavity dimensions as their body size increases. Distributional tendencies of primary diaphyseal nutrient foramina are quite similar in the smaller Delphinornis, Marambiornopsis, and extant Pygoscelis on one side and in Palaeeudyptes and extant Aptenodytes on the other. Anthropornis shows a unique, plesiomorphic pattern with a prevalence of plantar blood supply to the metatarsals. The diaphyseal nutrient canals diverge in orientation, some obliquely away from the proximal part, others with disparate trajectories. Cross-sectional anisotropy along the tarsometatarsal shaft generally appears to be rather low. Clustering of coherency curves along certain tarsometatarsal segments may reflect a selection process that exerts a significant influence within biomechanically crucial sections. Diaphyseal resistance to mediolateral bending forces is explicitly more efficient in extant penguins than in Eocene Sphenisciformes. This can be interpreted as an adaptation to the waddling gait of extant penguins.

Alcids-like flapping wing for exploring the role of wing folding in underwater locomotion

Alcids showcase excellent aerial-aquatic locomotion abilities benefitting from the morphing wing. In the aerial environment, alcids fully extend their wings, while underwater, they partly fold the wings. In this article, we mimicked the wing morphology of the alcids family to explore the hydrodynamic advantage of the folded configuration in the aquatic environment and four three-dimensional-printed wings including any combination of with feather or without feather, and extended or folded were created. The steady-state experiment reveals that the extended wings of alcids double the lift, counteracting gravity, while folding the wings halves the drag and reduces unnecessary lift, with configurations maintaining a similar lift-to-drag ratio. We investigated the alcid wing kinematics and designed an electronic wing mechanism with flapping and pitching motions to mimic the wing motion of the alcid. Quasi-steady estimation confirmed the presence of an active upstroke during diving in alcids. The experimental results validate the estimation, showing good agreement in force trends and average forward force. Additionally, the flapping wing experiment also demonstrates that pitch motion improves thrust generation, reduces lateral vibrations and increases mechanical efficiency. Under identical kinematics, extended models performed best, but alcids may prefer folded wings underwater for their highest thrust at the same Strouhal number and lower power needs.

A new tiny fossil penguin from the Late Oligocene of New Zealand and the morphofunctional transition of the penguin wing

The Late Oligocene is a period of high penguin diversity, following major changes in the marine environment at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary and prior to the emergence of crown penguins in the Miocene. Historically, a large morphological gap existed between the most crownward Platydyptes among the Oligocene penguins from New Zealand and the Early Miocene stem penguins such as Palaeospheniscus from South America. Here we describe a new species that contributes to filling this gap. Pakudyptes hakataramea gen. et sp. nov. is the earliest tiny penguin, overlapping in size with the little penguin Eudyptula minor. Its distinctive combination of a well-developed proximal end of the humerus and an archaic elbow joint provides clues to the evolution of penguin wings. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that penguin wings evolved rapidly from the Late Oligocene to the Early Miocene, together with the acquisition of morphofunctional and hydrodynamical characteristics that enable the excellent swimming ability of modern penguins. As an indicator of aquatic adaptation, bone microanatomy shows a comparable structure to that of Eudyptula. The appearance of the smallest body size and the evolution of modern wings may have led to the ecological diversity of modern penguins, which confirms the importance of Zealandia in penguin evolution.

Sea ice concentration decline in an important Adélie penguin molt area

Unlike in many polar regions, the spatial extent and duration of the sea ice season have increased in the Ross Sea sector of the Southern Ocean during the satellite era. Simultaneously, populations of Adélie penguins, a sea ice obligate, have been stable or increasing in the region. Relationships between Adélie penguin population growth and sea ice concentration (SIC) are complex, with sea ice driving different, sometimes contrasting, demographic patterns. Adélie penguins undergo a complete molt annually, replacing all their feathers while fasting shortly after the breeding season. Unlike most penguin species, a majority of Adélies are thought to molt on sea ice, away from the breeding colonies, which makes this period particularly difficult to study. Here, we evaluate the hypothesis that persistent areas of high SIC provide an important molting habitat for Adélie penguins. We analyzed data from geolocating dive recorders deployed year-round on 195 adult penguins at two colonies in the Ross Sea from 2017 to 2019. We identified molt by detecting extended gaps in postbreeding diving activity and used associated locations to define two key molting areas. Remotely sensed data indicated that SIC during molt was anomalously low during the study and has declined in the primary molt area since 1980. Further, annual return rates of penguins to breeding colonies were positively correlated with SIC in the molt areas over 20 y. Together these results suggest that sea ice conditions during Adélie penguin molt may represent a previously underappreciated annual bottleneck for adult survival.
