Critical Speed throughout Aging: Insight into the World Masters Championships

Field-based tests for determining critical speed among runners and its practical application: a systematic review

Introduction

This review focuses exclusively on field-based critical speed (CS) tests for runners, aiming to evaluate key testing conditions to optimize field-based assessments and their practical applications.

Methods

A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science databases in July 2024 using terms like "critical power," "critical speed," "testing," and "field condition" along with related keywords. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, studies were systematically identified, screened, assessed for eligibility, and evaluated for the validity, reliability, and applicability of field-based methods for determining CS in runners.

Results

From an initial pool of 450 studies, 19 met the inclusion criteria. The time trial (TT) test and the 3-minute all-out test (3MT) emerged as the most frequently used field-based methods, demonstrating high reliability when conducted under specific conditions.

Conclusion

This review demonstrates that while field-based CS testing is a practical alternative to lab-based assessments, obtaining reliable results relies on following recommended testing settings, particularly for TT tests. By outlining the practical applications and conditions necessary for accurate CS assessment, this review supports athletes and coaches in applying CS testing effectively to enhance training strategies and performance.

Vascular dysfunction and the age-related decline in critical power

Ageing results in lower exercise tolerance, manifested as decreased critical power (CP). We examined whether the age-related decrease in CP occurs independently of changes in muscle mass and whether it is related to impaired vascular function. Ten older (63.1 ± 2.5 years) and 10 younger (24.4 ± 4.0 years) physically active volunteers participated. Physical activity was measured with accelerometry. Leg muscle mass was quantified with dual X-ray absorptiometry. The CP and maximum power during a graded exercise test (PGXT ) of single-leg knee-extension exercise were determined over the course of four visits. During a fifth visit, vascular function of the leg was assessed with passive leg movement (PLM) hyperaemia and leg blood flow and vascular conductance during knee-extension exercise at 10 W, 20 W, slightly below CP (90% CP) and PGXT . Despite not differing in leg lean mass (P = 0.901) and physical activity (e.g., steps per day, P = 0.735), older subjects had ∼30% lower mass-specific CP (old = 3.20 ± 0.94 W kg-1 vs. young = 4.60 ± 0.87 W kg-1 ; P < 0.001). The PLM-induced hyperaemia and leg blood flow and/or conductance were blunted in the old at 20 W, 90% CP and PGXT (P < 0.05). When normalized for leg muscle mass, CP was strongly correlated with PLM-induced hyperaemia (R2  = 0.52; P < 0.001) and vascular conductance during knee-extension exercise at 20 W (R2  = 0.34; P = 0.014) and 90% CP (R2  = 0.39; P = 0.004). In conclusion, the age-related decline in CP is not only an issue of muscle quantity, but also of impaired muscle quality that corresponds to impaired vascular function.

Sex Differences in the Speed-Duration Relationship of Elite Runners across the Lifespan

PURPOSE

To determine if the speed-duration relationship is altered with age and sex of elite Master's runners.

METHODS

The world's top 10 performances for men and women in three events (800, 1500, and 5000 m) across six age groups (18-34 yr, 40-49 yr, 50-59 yr, 60-69 yr, 70-79 yr, and 80-89 yr) were analyzed from public data to establish theoretical models of the speed-duration relationship. Critical speed (CS) and the curvature constant ( D ') were estimated by fitting the average speeds and performance times with a two-parameter hyperbolic model.

RESULTS

Critical speed expressed relative to the 18- to 34-yr-olds, declined with age (92.2% [40-49] to 55.2% [80-89]; P < 0.001), and absolute CS was higher in men than women within each age group ( P < 0.001). The percent difference in CS between the men and women progressively increased across age groups (10.8% [18-34] to 15.5% [80-89]). D ' was lower in women than men in the 60-69 yr, 70-79 yr, and 80-89 yr age groups ( P < 0.001), but did not differ in the 18-34 yr, 40-49 yr, or 50-59 yr age groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Critical speed progressively decreased with age, likely due to age-related decrements in several physiological systems that cause reduced aerobic capacity. The mechanism for the larger sex difference in CS in the older age groups is unknown but may indicate physiological differences that occur with aging and/or historical sociological factors that have reduced participation opportunities of older female runners resulting in a more limited talent pool.

Interaction of exercise bioenergetics with pacing behavior predicts track distance running performance

The best possible finishing time for a runner competing in distance track events can be estimated from their critical speed (CS) and the finite amount of energy that can be expended above CS (D´). During tactical races with variable pacing, the runner with the "best" combination of CS and D´ and, therefore, the fastest estimated finishing time prior to the race, does not always win. We hypothesized that final race finishing positions depend on the relationships between the pacing strategies used, the athletes' initial CS, and their instantaneous D´ (i.e., D´ balance) as the race unfolds. Using publicly available data from the 2017 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships men's 5,000-m and 10,000-m races, race speed, CS, and D´ balance were calculated. The correlation between D´ balance and actual finishing positions was nonsignificant using start-line values but improved to R² > 0.90 as both races progressed. The D´ balance with 400 m remaining was strongly associated with both final 400-m split time and proximity to the winner. Athletes who exhausted their D´ were unable to hold pace with the leaders, whereas a high D´ remaining enabled a fast final 400 m and a high finishing position. The D´ balance model was able to accurately predict finishing positions in both a "slow" 5,000-m and a "fast" 10,000-m race. These results indicate that although CS and D´ can characterize an athlete's performance capabilities prior to the start, the pacing strategy that optimizes D´ utilization significantly impacts the final race outcome.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We show that the interaction between exercise bioenergetics and real-time pacing strategy predicts track distance running performance. Critical speed (CS) and the finite energy expended above CS (D´) can characterize an athlete's capabilities prior to the race start, but the pacing strategy that optimizes D´ utilization ultimately impacts whether a runner is in contention to win and whether a runner will have a fast final 400 m. Accordingly, D´ balance predicts final race finishing order.

Over 55 years of critical power: Fact or artifact?

This report aims to generate an evidence-based debate of the Critical Power (CP), or its analogous Critical Speed (CS), concept. Race times of top Spanish runners were utilized to calculate CS based on three (1500-m to 5000-m; CS_1.5-5km ) and four (1500-m to 10000-m; CS_1.5-10km ) distance performances. Male running world records from 1000 to 5000-m (CS_1-5km ), 1000 to 10,000-m (CS_1-10km ), 1000-m to half marathon (CS_{1km-half marathon} ), and 1000-m to marathon (CS_1km-marathon ) distance races were also utilized for CS calculations. CS_1.5-5km (19.62 km h^-1 ) and CS_1.5-10km (18.68 km h^-1 ) were different (p < 0.01), but both approached the average race speed of the longest distance chosen in the model, and were remarkably homogeneous among subjects (97% ±1% and 98% ±1%, respectively). Similar results were obtained using the world records. CS values progressively declined, until reaching a CS_1km-marathon value of 20.77 km h^-1 (10% lower than CS_1-5km ). Each CS value approached the average speed of the longest distance chosen in the model (96.4%-99.8%). A power function better fitted the speed-time relationship compared with the standardized hyperbolic function. However, the horizontal asymptote of a power function is zero. This better approaches the classical definition of CP: the power output that can be maintained almost indefinitely without exhaustion. Beyond any sophisticated mathematical calculation, CS corresponds to 95%-99% of the average speed of the longest distance chosen as an exercise trial. CP could be considered a mathematical artifact rather than an important endurance performance marker. In such a case, the consideration of CP as a physiological "gold-standard" should be reevaluated.
