Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS This study aimed to investigate the effects of low phase angle (PhA) on functional status and discharge disposition during the acute phase in older patients with acute stroke. METHODS We included consecutive patients who experienced acute stroke between October 2021 and December 2022. The exclusion criteria included: age<65 years, admission from other than home, death during hospitalization, inability to measure bioelectrical impedance analysis owing to implantation, and missing data. We defined low PhA (<5.28° for male and <4.62° for female) and categorized them into the low PhA group and normal group. The clinical outcomes were functional independence by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score (0-2, independence; 3-5, nonindependence) and discharge disposition (home or others). We used multivariate logistic regression analysis to examine the effect of low PhA on the mRS score at discharge and discharge disposition. RESULTS Ultimately, a total of 205 patients were included in this analysis. More patients in the low PhA group were unable to be independent (27.7% vs. 66.7%, P < 0.001) and were unable to be discharged home (53.4% vs. 82.5%, P < 0.001) than in the normal group. Logistic regression analysis of the mRS scores showed that baseline low PhA decreased the likelihood of functional independence (odds ratio [OR] = 0.275, P = 0.003) and home discharge (OR = 0.378, P = 0.044). CONCLUSIONS Low PhA is a risk factor for low functional status at hospital discharge; it decreases the likelihood of home discharge in older patients with acute stroke.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between selected components of body composition and the phase angle specified by bioelectrical impedance analysis, depending on the level of physical activity among students. Materials and Methods: The study group consisted of 484 university students from Krosno. The diagnostic survey method (IPAQ-SF), measurements of highs, and analysis of body composition components (BIA) were used. The relationship between variables was determined using the χ2 test, the V-Kramer coefficient, and Spearman's rho coefficient. Results: University students in physical education demonstrated the highest level of physical activity and the lowest incidence of excessive body mass. Among the participants, 28.1% did not engage in any physical activity, or their level was insufficient. The PhA level was correlated with lean body mass and muscle mass. The correlation between higher levels of PA and PhA values was statistically significant, as was the relationship between self-assessment of physical fitness and the level of PA determined by IPAQ-SF. Conclusions: Preventive actions and educational programs, especially about spending leisure time in active ways, should be particularly targeted at students of disciplines with a significant amount of sedentary classes.

Abstract
Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a multifactorial disorder. A possible role of the social network and the gut microbiota in pathogenesis has been added. Exogenous shocks such as the COVID19 pandemic have had a negative impact on patients with AN. The potential medical and nutritional impact of malnutrition and/or compensatory behaviors gives rise to a complex disease with a wide range of severity, the management of which requires a multidisciplinary team with a high level of subject matter expertise. Coordination between levels of care is necessary as well as understanding how to transition the patient from pediatric to adult care is essential. A proper clinical evaluation can detect possible complications, as well as establish the organic risk of the patient. This allows caregivers to tailor the medical-nutritional treatment for each patient. Reestablishing adequate nutritional behaviors is a fundamental pillar of treatment in AN. The design of a personalized nutritional treatment and education program is necessary for this purpose. Depending on the clinical severity, artificial nutrition may be necessary. Although the decision regarding the level of care necessary at diagnosis or during follow-up depends on a number of factors (awareness of the disease, medical stability, complications, suicidal risk, outpatient treatment failure, psychosocial context, etc.), outpatient treatment is the most frequent and most preferred choice. However, more intensive care (total or partial hospitalization) may be necessary in certain cases. In severely malnourished patients, the appearance of refeeding syndrome should be prevented during renourishment. The presence of AN in certain situations (pregnancy, vegetarianism, type 1 diabetes mellitus) requires specific care. Physical activity in these patients must also be addressed correctly.

Abstract
Maintaining an active lifestyle is crucial for good health. Markers of health risk include tissue components. This study aimed to indicate which body composition elements create the strongest correlations with physical activity performed in young students of medical faculties. The study group consisted of 75 students (33 men and 42 women) from Wroclaw Medical University. Each student underwent accelerometer and anthropometric measurements and body composition analysis. Both men and women had similar physical activity levels. The study found that the amount of vigorous physical activity correlated significantly with the basal metabolic rate (BMR), fat, water and muscle content, fat-free mass (FFM), bone mass, extracellular to intracellular water ratio (ECW/ICW), and phase angle (PA), with r~ ± (0.2-0.4). The amount of moderate physical activity correlated with body mass, body mass index (BMI), BMR, FFM, and bone mass, with r~0.3-0.5. There are dimorphic differences in the strength of correlations between physical activity and elements of body composition. A greater amount of moderate and vigorous physical activity is associated with greater FFM and bone mass in men, which causes BMI to increase as well (in this case, higher BMI is not a sign of being overweight). For women, the beneficial effect of higher amounts of vigorous physical activity on reducing fat content and increasing muscle mass is more pronounced. In both men and women, an improvement in hydration is evident with increased vigorous physical activity volume.

Abstract
Nutritional status and body composition in cardiovascular (CV) patients are important aspects of their performance. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a noninvasive method that provides reliable information about bioelectrical parameters which reflect nutritional status and body composition data. The aim of this paper was to describe BIA, its advantages, limitations, and clinical applications in CV patients. The PubMed database was searched for all papers showing the use of BIA in CV conditions until January 1, 2023. A total of 42 papers regarding BIA application in CV patients were identified. Phase angle, Z200/5 parameter, and membrane capacitance are the BIA parameters that can be used for nutritional status assessment in CV patients, mainly in heart failure and after myocardial infarction. Among secondary body composition parameters, fat mass can be used for obesity assessment which is a CV risk factor. Body cell mass can be used together which the direct BIA parameters for nutritional status assessment which is an important factor in treatment outcome, quality of life, and disease prognosis. Total body water can be used for hydration assessment in heart failure and during invasive procedures. To conclude, BIA is a noninvasive method that provides essential information about the general condition of the body which is the result of nutritional and hydration status in CV patients.

Abstract
The diagnosis of malnutrition should be one of the pillars of comprehensive patient care, especially in the case of patients with large wounds, prolonged healing, or comorbidities. The condition for a reliable and accurate nutritional diagnosis is to link it with the parameters of nutritional status assessment at the basic level (anthropometric measurements and clinical assessment) and in depth (biochemical tests and bioelectrical impedance). A prospective study included a sample of 60 patients with coexisting chronic wounds (venous ulcers, diabetic foot syndrome, pressure injury) treated at the Wound Treatment Clinic of Fr. B. Markiewicz Podkarpackie Oncology Center (Poland). The method of estimation and diagnostic survey was used; the research tool was a scientific research protocol consisting of four parts. Self-care capacity was assessed based on the Barthel scale, nutritional status using blood biochemical parameters, and electrical bioimpedance. Wounds were classified according to the extent, depth of tissue structures, and potential infection. Subjects with pressure ulcers had statistically significantly lower fat-free mass component indices compared to those with diabetic foot syndrome and venous ulceration. The subjects with pressure ulcers had significantly lower values of body composition components compared to those with diabetic foot syndrome and venous ulcers. In the group of patients with pressure ulcers, the lowest values of albumin (3.20 g/dL), hemoglobin (10.81 g/dL), and nutritional risk index (NRI) (88.13 pts.) scores were confirmed. Subjects with pressure ulcers with limited self-care presented a non-physiological nutritional status, indicating a risk of malnutrition. Local actions related to wound treatment should be preceded by a general examination, considering the state of augmented nutrition with the use of electrical bioimpedance.

Abstract
Background and aims Malnutrition is prevalent in pediatric populations with any disease, and it is also related to changes in body composition. In addition, recent studies have documented relationships between these changes and phase angle (PhA), an important parameter of functional nutritional assessment. PhA could be a new marker of nutritional status. Many studies have generated information about the association between PhA and malnutrition in various pathologies, although the vast majority of this information is from adult populations. In this systematic review, we answered the following question: What is the association between PhA and the nutritional status in pediatric populations? Methods We performed a systematic search of the Medline/PubMed and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature databases (LILACS) databases for studies published up to October 2022. The inclusion criteria were pediatric subjects, which reported the relationship between PhA and the nutritional status with any objective nutritional indicator, and PhA was measured by electric impedance and reported at 50 kHz. We synthesized data from the studies that reported cutoff analysis of PhA with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, mean PhA values presented by nutritional status strata, and correlations between PhA and nutritional status indicators. We assessed the risk of bias by using the Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies and the Quality Assessment for Diagnostic Accuracy Studies. Results Of the 126 studies we identified, 15 met the inclusion criteria. The included studies reported the association between PhA and objective indicators of nutritional status, including weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) <-1 standard deviation (SD) for malnutrition, height-for-age z-score (HAZ) for malnutrition-stunting, body mass index (BMI) for the starvation state, body mass index z-score (BMIz) and BMI for malnutrition, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) <11 cm for severe acute malnutrition (SAM), and fat-free mass index z-score (FFMIz) <-2 z-score for moderate malnutrition, among others. The report of these associations between PhA and nutritional status was based on cutoff points generated with ROC curve analysis or comparison of mean PhA values, which were reported stratified by the presence or absence of malnutrition, and correlations between PhA and anthropometric indicators for the evaluation of the nutritional status in the pediatric population. It was difficult to compare the studies due to the heterogeneity of the bioelectrical impedance analysis models used, how PhA was reported (standardized, percentiles, or degrees), and the anthropometric indicators used to diagnose malnutrition. Conclusion The early identification of malnutrition is relevant to establish the correct nutritional treatment; PhA appears to be a sensitive indicator of nutritional status and is easy to obtain. Although the results of this review are inadequate to establish PhA cutoff points associated with malnutrition in pediatric populations, in most of the studies, there was an association between PhA and objective indicators of nutritional status. Abstract
The aim of the study was to indicate which body composition parameters and which lifestyle components affect the phase angle (PA) value in young adults. Two-hundred-and-eighty-one students at Wroclaw Medical University participated in the study. A survey on respondent lifestyles was followed by anthropometric measurements, body composition analysis, and basal metabolic rate (BMR) calculation. The differences in the body composition of men and women corresponded to their sexual anatomy and physiology. Sex-dependent differences in lifestyle were also reported. The study revealed a relationship between PA and height, weight, BMR, BMI (body mass index), FFM (fat-free body mass), bone mass, water mass, muscle mass (r~0.4–0.7), ECW/ICW (extracellular water/intracellular water) and fat mass (r~−(0.4–0.6)) for the entire studied group. The relationship between PA values and lifestyle components concerned consumption of energy drinks, cola, alcohol, water, vegetables and fruits, meat, and also intervals between meals, time for physical exercises, and screen time (r~±0.2). The research shows that the PA value increases with an increase in positive body composition parameters. Following the principles of proper nutrition and physical activity increases PA values in most cases.

Abstract
PURPOSE In patients living with Anorexia Nervosa (AN), dehydration and haemoconcentration, may prevent a correct interpretation of laboratory nutritional parameters. Our study aims to evaluate if some indicators of disease severity, as body mass index (BMI), Phase Angle (PhA) and months of amenorrhea may be predictors of metabolic alterations (serum albumin, liver enzymes). METHODS In 154 outpatients with AN, case history was collected, and anthropometric and laboratory parameters measured. Patients were divided according to the following tertiles (T) of BMI, duration of amenorrhea and PhA: (1) BMI (T1 < 15.6; T2 15.6-16.8; T3 > 16.8 kg/m2); (2) Amenorrhea duration (T1 < 7; T2 7-14; T3 > 14 months); (3) PhA value (T1 < 4.64; T2 4.64-5.35; T3: > 5.35°). ROC curves were used to determine which of these three indicators (BMI, PhA and amenorrhea duration) might better identify patients belonging to Group A or B (less than 3 or more metabolic abnormalities). RESULTS The most frequent registered metabolic alterations were for alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase, cholesterol and hemoglobin. Aspartate aminotransferase, ALP and gamma glutamyl transferase abnormalities were frequent in the first tertiles of all the three indicators. Albumin was low in the T1 of BMI and PhA. No differences in nutritional alterations emerged according to amenorrhea duration. PhA had the best performance (AUCs: 0.721) in identifying patients with 3 or more abnormalities, with the optimal cut-off value of 4.5°. CONCLUSIONS Our data confirmed PhA as the more reliable predictor of metabolic alterations, followed by BMI and amenorrhea duration, especially in the first tertile. EVIDENCE-BASED MEDICINE Level 2.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to analyze the factors influencing sarcopenia in patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) in mainland China and to explore the role of phase angle (PhA) in sarcopenia. METHODS We enrolled 346 patients on MHD with regular dialysis and collected relevant data. According to the diagnostic criteria of the Asian Sarcopenia Working Group, the patients were placed into one of two groups: sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia. The differences between groups were compared and the statistically significant factors were included in binary logistic regression analysis to screen for independent factors influencing sarcopenia. Receiver operating characteristic curve and area under the curve were used to evaluate the predictive value of PhA in sarcopenia. RESULTS The prevalence of sarcopenia was 32.66% in patients on MHD. Logistic regression analysis showed that sarcopenia was significantly associated with age (odds ratio [OR], 1.12; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.08-1.15; P < 0.001), body mass index (OR, 0.66; 95% CI, 0.58-0.76; P < 0.001), and PhA (OR, 0.24; 95% CI, 0.15-0.40; P < 0.001). The best cutoff value of PhA on sarcopenia was 4.67° for both sexes, 4.67° and 4.60° for men and women, respectively (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION The present study showed that PhA was an important influencing factor of sarcopenia adjusted by age and body mass index in Asian patients on MHD. PhA may have an optimistic predictive value to identify sarcopenia in these population, and it is convenient and accessible in clinical practice than the diagnostic criteria of sarcopenia.

Abstract
Introduction: One of the main factors contributing to the development of nutritional deficits in chronic heart failure (CHF) patients is the systemic inflammatory process. Progressing inflammatory response leads to exacerbation of the disease and could develop into cardiac cachexia (CC), characterized by involuntary weight loss followed by muscle wasting. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between rs767455 (36 T/C) of the TNFRSF1A and the occurrence of nutritional disorders in CHF patients with cachexia. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 142 CHF individuals who underwent cardiac and nutritional screening in order to assess cardiac performance and nutritional status. The relationship between TNFRSF1A rs767455 genotypes and patients' features was investigated. Results: A greater distribution of the TT genotype among cachectic patients in contrast to non-cachectic individuals was found (TT frequencies of 62.9% and 37.1%, respectively; p = 0.013). We noted a significantly lower albumin concentration (p = 0.039) and higher C-reactive protein (CRP) levels (p = 0.019) in patients with the TT genotype. Regarding cardiac parameters, CHF individuals bearing the TT genotype demonstrated a significant reduction in ejection fraction (EF) (p = 0.033) in contrast to other genotype carriers; moreover, they had a significantly higher concentration of N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in the blood (p = 0.018). We also noted a lower frequency of TT genotype carriers among individuals qualified as grades I or II of the New York Heart Association (NYHA) (p = 0.006). The multivariable analysis selected the TT genotype as an unfavorable factor related to a higher chance of cachexia in CHF patients (Odds ratio (OR) = 2.56; p = 0.036). Conclusions: The rs767455TT genotype of TNFRSF1A can be considered as an unfavorable factor related to a higher risk of cachexia in CHF patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The role of physical activity in anorexia nervosa (AN) treatment has been investigated. Muscle strength (MS) reflects physical condition and can predict AN patients' response to this novel treatment approach. This study was intended to find bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) parameters that predict AN patients' MS. METHODS The study included 42 AN patients and 42 healthy ones in the control group. BIA parameters that predict MS were assessed by dividing AN patients into groups by their hand grip strength test score (higher/lower than 22.5 kg). RESULTS The highest accuracy for distinguishing AN subjects from the control group was achieved by cell membrane capacitance (AUC = 0.916), impedance at 200 kHz and 5 kHz ratio (AUC = 0.924), phase angle (PA) 5 kHz (AUC = 0.906) and PA 50 kHz (AUC = 0.919). The low MS group had significantly lower values of PA 50 kHz (mean: 4.03 ± 0.80° vs. 4.58 ± 0.65°; p = 0.032) and fat-free mass index (mean: 12.22 ± 1.41 kg/m2 vs. 13.14 ± 0.94 kg/m2; p = 0.026). In the univariate model, PA 50 kHz ≥4.037° was associated with the lowest chance of muscle weakness (OR = 0.230; p = 0.005). In the multivariate analysis, PA 50 kHz was the only significant factor of MS (OR = 0.01; p = 0.027). CONCLUSIONS PA 50 kHz is the best BIA parameter to predict MS in AN patients. It could be useful for assessment before physical activity treatment application.

Abstract
The present study used receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis to investigate the accuracy of body composition and raw bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in correctly classifying disordered eating attitudes (DEA) in dance students. Participants were 81 female dancers assigned in two groups: beginner training (BT; age (mean ± SD) = 10.09 ± 1.2 years, n = 32) and advanced training (AT; age = 15.37 ± 2.1 years, n = 49). Fat mass (FM) was estimated by Slaughter's equation and skeletal muscle with Poortman's equation. Impedance (Z), resistance (R), reactance (Xc) and phase angle (PhA) were obtained through multifrequency BIA at a frequency of 50 kHz. Fat-free mass (FFM) was assessed using Sun's equation. For evaluation of DEA, the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26) questionnaire was performed. We defined an EAT-26 score ≥ 20 as positive for DEA. Comparisons between groups were performed by a one-way ANOVA test or Kruskall-Wallis test. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were performed to assess associations between variables. ROC curve analysis was utilized to test the accuracy of body composition and BIA variables in predicting DEA. In the BT group, Xc and PhA demonstrated high accuracy in predicting DEA with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.976 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.85-1.00) and 0.957 (95% CI: 0.82-0.99), respectively, (both p < 0.0001). FFM Sun had an AUC of 0.836 (95% CI: 0.66-0.94) (p < 0.0001) in the BT group and FFM Slaughter was 0.797 (95% CI: 0.66-0.90) (p < 0.001) in the AT group. Reactance and Phase angle were excellent and useful predictors of DEA in the BT group.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Body mass index (BMI) is still the only recommended measurable nutritional status assessment parameter in anorexia nervosa (AN). The aim of this study was to measure other anthropometrical and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) parameters in AN patients and to evaluate their nutritional status assessment value. Materials and Methods: The 46 AN female patients were examined at the beginning of hospitalization and followed-up in three measurements (in 6 ± 2 weeks’ intervals). Anthropometrical assessment was based on BMI, circumferences of arm, calf, thigh, hips, waist, their ratio (waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)), and a skinfold test over biceps and triceps muscle, under the scapula, over the hip, and 2 cm from the umbilicus. The BIA parameters included phase angle (PA), membrane capacitance (Cm), and impedance at 200 kHz, and a 5 kHz ratio (Z200/5). Results: In the 1st measurement, BMI correlated with all anthropometric and BIA parameters (p < 0.05). For BIA parameters, the correlation included arm circumference and WHR (p < 0.05). In the follow-up, significant changes were observed in BMI and all BIA parameters. The correlation between BMI and all BIA parameters was present in the 2nd and 3rd measurements (p < 0.05). In the 4th measurement, BMI correlated only with Cm (p = 0.0114). Comparison of BIA parameters according to the state of starvation (BMI < 16.0 kg/m2) revealed that all studied BIA parameters were characterized by statistically significant sensitivity and specificity in the detection of this condition (p < 0.05), except PA in the 4th measurement (p = 0.2099). Conclusions: Selected BIA and anthropometrical parameters could be used for AN patients’ assessment. The study confirmed dynamic changes of BIA parameters during the follow-up. They could be useful in the detection of the state of starvation.
