Abstract
Prepectoral breast reconstruction is a relatively new surgical technique that allows placement of the implant directly over the pectoralis major. It has benefits in terms of patient wellbeing, operative time, postoperative pain and recovery. However, in cases of infection, implant removal is often required and the patient is left with a flat chest. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of breast implant infection after breast reconstruction, successfully treated with a combination of both negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) and photobiomodulation (PBM). A 32-year-old female patient with a BRCA2 mutation had undergone bilateral risk-reducing, nipple-sparing mastectomy for in situ ductal breast carcinoma followed by a prepectoral reconstruction. On the left side, the patient presented with dehiscence of 2.5cm with implant exposure 90 days after surgery. After an initial conservative approach, the patient's condition worsened, and she developed a larger dehiscence and a red breast. She was treated with implant removal. PBM of the cavity and the application of VeraFlo Therapy (3M, US) with a polyurethane-foam filling in the residual cavity were adopted. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated and appropriate antibiotic therapy was started. Every 48-72 hours, she returned to the operating room for a washout, PBM, microbiological swabs, foam exchange and continuing NPWT. After 21 days of this approach and two consecutive negative swabs, the patient underwent breast reconstruction with a subpectoral expander. After six months, a definitive implant of the same size as the contralateral one was positioned. The cosmetic result was good and patient satisfaction was high. The combination of NPWT and PBM may represent a good solution in case of breast implant infection after prepectoral reconstruction with benefits in terms of surgical outcome, patient satisfaction and postoperative quality of life.

Abstract
Composite graft is a useful tool for the reconstruction of specific facial aesthetic subunits with a single surgical stage. This technique, when successful, gives optimal results in the reconstruction of small defects of nose, ear, eyelid and lips. The aim of this work is to optimize the attachment of composite grafts in the reconstruction of small complex facial defects by combining it with Fluorescent Light Energy (FLE) during the healing process of the graft. The beneficial effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) on wound healing might be attributed to anti-inflammatory signaling, cell proliferation, protein synthesis, and decreased bacterial infection. We previously experienced rewarding achievements using Photonic energy in the treatment of burns, non-healing wounds and pathological scars. Therefore, we chose to exploit the potential of bioluminescent energy to maximize aesthetical and functional results, enhancing the formation of new vascular connections and modulating both inflammatory and scarring processes. From the 2nd postoperative day, the patients were locally treated with 5 FLE sessions every (48/72 h) 2 or 3 days. We evaluated results in terms of time for engraftment, quality of the scarring, infective complications and morbidity of the donor site. Graft survival is subject to many factors, both local and systemic. To overcome these issues, various methods have been studied and described. We here report the successful reconstruction of full-thickness defects of the free margin of the nasal alar rim and the central portion of the inferior lip with a composite graft. These results were highly encouraging if compared with the literature. By analyzing our small cohort, we demonstrated how new technologies may push this traditional reconstructive procedure beyond their old boundaries: overcoming an increased size demand or a potential infective wound environment.

Abstract
Chronic wounds pose a significant clinical challenge due to their complex pathophysiology and the burden of long-term management. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are emerging as a novel therapeutic option in managing difficult wounds, although comprehensive data on their use in wound care are lacking. This study aimed to explore existing scientific knowledge of mAbs in treating chronic wounds based on a rationale of direct inhibition of the main molecules involved in the underlying inflammatory pathophysiology. We performed a literature review excluding primary inflammatory conditions with potential ulcerative outcomes (e.g., hidradenitis suppurativa). mAbs were effective in treating wounds from 16 different etiologies. The most commonly treated conditions were pyoderma gangrenosum (treated with 12 different mAbs), lipoid necrobiosis, and cutaneous vasculitis (each treated with 3 different mAbs). Fourteen mAbs were analyzed in total. Rituximab was effective in 43.75% of cases (7/16 diseases), followed by tocilizumab (25%, 4/16 diseases), and both etanercept and adalimumab (18.75%, 3/16 conditions each). mAbs offer therapeutic potential for chronic wounds unresponsive to standard treatments. However, due to the complex molecular nature of wound healing, no single target molecule can be identified. Therefore, the use of mAbs should be considered as a translational approach for limited cases of multi-resistant conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and S. aureus are bacterial species of importance in veterinary medicine. The increasing incidence of antibiotic resistance necessitates the implementation of novel treatment modalities. Fluorescent light energy (FLE) is used as an adjunctive and primary treatment for canine pyoderma. However, no in vitro studies exist investigating its bactericidal effects against S. pseudintermedius or S. aureus. OBJECTIVES To determine the bactericidal effects of FLE on S. pseudintermedius and S. aureus isolates. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two meticillin-susceptible S. pseudintermedius (MSSP) isolates, three meticillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP) isolates and one meticillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolate were studied. A commercially available blue light-emitting diode (bLED) lamp and photoconverting hydrogel FLE system was used. All bacteria were exposed to five conditions following inoculation: (i) no treatment (control); (ii) blue light (bLED) once; (iii) bLED twice consecutively; (iv) FLE (bLED and photoconverting hydrogel) once; and (v) FLE (bLED and photoconverting hydrogel) twice consecutively. Each individual exposure was 2 min long. RESULTS No statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were found for any treatment group when each bacterial isolate was evaluated individually, MSSP isolates were grouped, MRSP isolates were grouped, when all S. pseudintermedius isolates were combined, or when all isolates of both Staphylococcus species were combined. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE While clinical success is reported when using FLE to treat Staphylococcus infections in animals, no in vitro antibacterial efficacy was identified for S. pseudintermedius or S. aureus under experimental conditions. The clinical success observed with FLE may be the result of a more complex in vivo response.

Abstract
It is common for community-based healthcare providers (CHPs)-many of whom have not received specialised training in wound care-to deliver initial and ongoing management for various wound types and diverse populations. Wounds in any setting can rapidly transition to a stalled, hard-to-heal wound (HTHW) that is not following a normal healing trajectory. Failure to recognise or address issues that cause delayed healing can lead to increased costs, healthcare utilisation and suffering. To encourage early intervention by CHPs, a panel of wound care experts developed actionable evidence-based recommendations for CHPs delineating characteristics and appropriate care in identifying and treating HTHWs. A HTHW is a wound that fails to progress towards healing with standard therapy in an orderly and timely manner and should be referred to a qualified wound care provider (QWCP) for advanced assessment and diagnosis if not healed or reduced in size by 40%-50% within 4 weeks. HTHWs occur in patients with multiple comorbidities, and display increases in exudate, infection, devitalised tissue, maceration or pain, or no change in wound size. CHPs can play an important initial role by seeing the individual's HTHW risk, addressing local infection and providing an optimal wound environment. An easy-to-follow one-page table was developed for the CHP to systematically identify, evaluate and treat HTHWs, incorporating a basic toolkit with items easily obtainable in common office/clinic practice settings. A flow chart using visual HTHW clinical cues is also presented to address CHPs with different learning styles. These tools encourage delivery of appropriate early interventions that can improve overall healthcare efficiency and cost.

Abstract
Úlceras em pacientes com Diabetes Mellitus são frequentes e consideradas uma das complicações de maior relevância durante a evolução clínica da doença. Analisar a aplicação do light-emitting diode (LED) azul no reparo tecidual de úlcera venosa de membro inferior. Consistiu na aplicação de LED azul, com comprimento de onda em torno de 680 THz e 620 THz no local da ferida, durante 10 minutos, 2 vezes por semana, durante 5 semanas. Foram utilizados instrumentos avaliativos de dor e sintomas neuropáticos, testes de sensibilidade, registro fotográfico diário, mensuração do tamanho das úlceras e índice do tempo de fechamento completo da ferida. Foi observada melhora no reparo tecidual das feridas, atingindo fechamento total em ambos os lados e redução da intensidade de dor referida. O LED como tratamento curativo de úlceras diabéticas crônicas mostrou efetividade na taxa de fechamento total da ferida e melhora de sintomas neuropáticos.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify scientific evidence of LED photobiomodulation in the treatment and tissue repair of chronic wounds in people with Diabetes Mellitus, types I and II. METHOD Systematic review conducted from September/2021 to April/2022 in PubMed, LILACS, SCIELO, COHRANE, EMBASE and Web of Science. Randomized and observational clinical trials using LED in wound healing in diabetics, published between 2015 and 2022 were included. Data were descriptively analyzed with title/abstract screening, full text articles reading and definitive selection after meeting the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. RESULTS Fromthe total of 840 references, eight articles were selected, that evaluated the effectiveness of LED phototherapy in wounds of diabetic patients. CONCLUSION LED light proved to be beneficial in tissue repair, with increased production in collagen and fibroblasts, angiogenesis, reduction of inflammation and, consequently, a decrease in lesion size.

Abstract
Wound healing (WH) is a complex multistep process in which a failure could lead to a chronic wound (CW). CW is a major health problem and includes leg venous ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and pressure ulcers. CW is difficult to treat and affects vulnerable and pluripathological patients. On the other hand, excessive scarring leads to keloids and hypertrophic scars causing disfiguration and sometimes itchiness and pain. Treatment of WH includes the cleaning and careful handling of injured tissue, early treatment and prevention of infection, and promotion of healing. Treatment of underlying conditions and the use of special dressings promote healing. The patient at risk and risk areas should avoid injury as much as possible. This review aims to summarize the role of physical therapies as complementary treatments in WH and scarring. The article proposes a translational view, opening the opportunity to develop these therapies in an optimal way in clinical management, as many of them are emerging. The role of laser, photobiomodulation, photodynamic therapy, electrical stimulation, ultrasound therapy, and others are highlighted in a practical and comprehensive approach.

Wound healing responses play a major role in chronic inflammation, which affects millions of people around the world. One of the daunting tasks of creating a wound-healing drug is finding equilibrium in the inflammatory cascade. In this study, the molecular and cellular mechanisms to regulate wound healing are explained, and recent research is addressed that demonstrates the molecular and cellular events during diabetic wound healing. Moreover, a range of factors or agents that facilitate wound healing have also been investigated as possible targets for successful treatment. It also summarises the various advances in research findings that have revealed promising molecular targets in the fields of therapy and diagnosis of cellular physiology and pathology of wound healing, such as neuropeptides, substance P, T cell immune response cDNA 7, miRNA, and treprostinil growth factors such as fibroblast growth factor, including thymosin beta 4, and immunomodulators as major therapeutic targets.

Abstract
Skin grafting is often the only treatment for skin trauma when large areas of tissue are affected. This surgical intervention damages the deeper dermal layers of the skin with implications for wound healing and a risk of scar development. Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy modulates biological processes in different tissues, with a positive effect on many cell types and pathways essential for wound healing. This study investigated the effect of fluorescent light energy (FLE) therapy, a novel type of PBM, on healing after skin grafting in a dermal fibrotic mouse model. Split-thickness human skin grafts were transplanted onto full-thickness excisional wounds on nude mice. Treated wounds were monitored, and excised xenografts were examined to assess healing and pathophysiological processes essential for developing chronic wounds or scarring. Results demonstrated that FLE treatment initially accelerated re-epithelialization and rete ridge formation, while later reduced neovascularization, collagen deposition, myofibroblast and mast cell accumulation, and connective tissue growth factor expression. While there was no visible difference in gross morphology, we found that FLE treatment promoted a balanced collagen remodeling. Collectively, these findings suggest that FLE has a conceivable effect at balancing healing after skin grafting, which reduces the risk of infections, chronic wound development, and fibrotic scarring.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lower limb ulcers not responding to standard treatments after 8 weeks are defined as chronic wounds, and they are a significant medical problem. Blue light (410-430 nm) proved to be effective in treating wounds, but there is a lack of data on chronic wounds in clinical practice. The study's purpose was to determine if Blue Light photobiomodulation with EmoLED medical device in addition to Standard of Care is more effective compared to Standard of care alone in promoting re-epithelialization of chronicwounds of lower limbs in 10 weeks. METHODS 90 patients affected by multiple or large area ulcers were enrolled. To minimize all variabilities, each patient has been used as control of himself. Primary endpoint was the comparison of the re-epithelialization rate expressed as a percentage of the difference between the initial and final area. Secondary endpoints were: treatment safety, pain reduction, wound area reduction trend over time, healing rate. RESULTS At week 10, the wounds treated with EmoLED in addition to Standard Care showed a smaller residual wound area compared to the wounds treated with Standard of Care alone: 42.1% vs 63.4% (p=0.029). The difference is particularly evident in venous leg ulcers, 33.3% vs 60.1% (p=0.007). 17 treated wounds and 12 controls showed complete healing at week 10. Patients showed a significant reduction in pain (p = 2*10-7). CONCLUSIONS Blue Light treatment in addition to Standard of Care accelerates consistently the re-epithelialization rate of chronic wounds, especially venous leg ulcers and increases the chances of total wound healing in 10 weeks.

Abstract
Hyposalivation is a condition represented by a reduced salivary flow and may include symptoms such as mouth dryness (xerostomia), loss of taste, pain, dysphagia, and dysphonia, all of which greatly affect an individual's quality of life.The aim of the present study was to systematically review the effects of low-level light therapy irradiation (photobiomodulation) on salivary gland function in patients with hyposalivation.The main question of the systematic review was: "Does low-level light irradiation therapy of the salivary glands affect salivary flow rate or indicators of salivary function (ion and protein concentrations) in patients with xerostomia or hyposalivation?" The question was based on the PICO (participant, intervention, control, outcome) principle and followed the PRISMA guidelines. Databases were explored and papers published between the years 1997 and 2020 were reviewed for the following Mesh-term keywords and their corresponding entry terms in different combinations: "Low-level light therapy," "Xerostomia," "Saliva," "Salivary glands," "Salivation."The initial sample consisted of 220 articles. Of those, 47 articles were used for full-text analysis and 18 were used for a systematic review, 14 were used in meta-analysis. According to their individual quality, most articles were classified as high quality of evidence according to the GRADE score. Meta-analysis of the evidence observed increase of unstimulated salivary flow 0.51 SMD compared to placebo (95% CI: 0.16-0.86), I2 = 50%, p = 0.005.The findings of our review revealed evidence of a beneficial effect of photobiomodulation therapy on salivary gland function. The therapy alleviates xerostomia and hyposalivation. However, these effects are reported short term only and did not induce lasting effects of photobiomodulation therapy on patients' quality of life.

Abstract
Background: Chronic ulcers represent a challenge for healthcare professionals and a large expense for national health care systems for their difficulty in achieving complete healing and for their high incidence of recurrence. With the progressive aging of the general population, the incidence of these injuries will only increase, further affecting the public health budget, hence the need to find new strategies for their management. The purpose of this study was to share the experience of the Complex Operational Unit of Plastic Surgery of the University Hospital of Padua with fluorescent light energy therapy, outlining its role in the treatment of chronic ulcers in the daily use outside the previous EUREKA study. Methods: In this case series study, we enrolled 15 patients with chronic ulcers of any etiology between January 2018 and July 2019 and we treated them using fluorescence light energy. We evaluated efficacy and safety endpoints reporting data in excel files completed by medical staff during the study. Results: The study confirms the effectiveness of fluorescent light energy inducing chronic ulcer healing, regardless of etiology, or at least preparing the lesions for a skin graft closure surgery. The system showed a low rate of complications established by patient adherence to treatment. Patients also reported a reduction in pain both at home and during outpatient dressings. Conclusion: Based on our experience, fluorescent light energy shows an excellent safety and efficacy profile in chronic ulcers no more responsive to traditional dressings and/or surgery.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The use of photobiomodulation has been proposed to improve wound healing for the last two decades. Recent development in photobiomodulation has led to the development of a novel biophotonic platform that utilizes fluorescent light energy (FLE) within the visible spectrum of light for healing of skin inflammation and wounds. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this article, FLE was used in preliminary analysis on 18 case studies of acute second-degree burns and in a pilot study using an ex vivo human skin model. Efficacy of FLE on wound healing and tissue remodeling was evaluated by monitoring improvements in the treated tissues, assessing pain for the patients, and by performing human genome microarray analysis of FLE-treated human skin samples. RESULTS Healing was reported for all 18 patients treated with FLE for acute second-degree burns without reported adverse effects or development of infections. Furthermore, preliminary ex vivo skin model data suggest that FLE impacts different cellular pathways including essential immune-modulatory mechanisms. CONCLUSIONS The results presented in this article are encouraging and suggest that FLE balances different stages of wound healing, which opens the door to initiating randomized controlled clinical trials for establishing the efficacy of FLE treatment in different phases of wound healing of second-degree burns.

After a summary of the assets that have led the translation of such light-based therapies from bench side into clinical use, recent advances in canine dermatology using this brand-new approach are presented, and future scenarios where this type of care may provide benefits over the current standard care are highlighted.

Abstract
A single centre, single-blinded, prospective, randomized, controlled clinical study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of twice weekly fluorescent light energy therapy (Phovia™) as adjunct to systemic antibiotics in the management of deep pyoderma in dogs. Dogs with clinical lesions consistent with deep pyoderma, positive bacterial culture, and showing neutrophil engulfing bacteria at cytology were included in the study. Assessments were undertaken weekly for 8 weeks and every 2 weeks thereafter until 12 weeks after enrolment. At each visit, lesions were scored and cytology was conducted to determine a neutrophil engulfing bacteria score. All dogs (Groups A and B) were treated with systemic antibiotic twice daily, and Group B received additionally Phovia twice weekly. Median treatment duration was 11.7 weeks for Group A and 5.7 weeks for Group B. After 8 weeks of treatment, the percentage of dogs that achieved clinical resolution was 35.0% and 88.0% for Groups A and B, respectively. Lesion scores showed highly statistically significant difference in favour of Group B from week 3 to 8, and neutrophil engulfing bacteria scores showed statistical difference from week 2 onwards in favour of Group B. These results indicate that Phovia, when used as an adjunct to systemic antibiotics, can accelerate time to clinical resolution in cases of canine deep pyoderma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Blue light (400 and 450 nm) contributes to bringing the inflammatory phase under control, increases angiogenesis, stimulates the metabolism of all cellular processes, reduces scar formation, increases collagen production, and decreases the bacterial burden. METHODS The aim of this study was to promote the healing process in 20 hard-to-heal wounds using a portable light-emitting diodes device that emits blue light (Emoled™). The primary endpoint of the study was to calculate in the three etiologic groups the reduction in wound size by the average delta area in square centimeters and as a percentage, and by the average healing rate (mm/days). The secondary endpoint was to assess the Wound Bed Score (WBS) and to assess patients' pain (Numerical Rating Scale, NRS). RESULTS At week 4 the average healing rate was 0.098 mm/days for venous leg ulcers, 0.353 mm/days for traumatic ulcers, and 0.09 mm/days for vasculitis. Overall, 16 patients had a reduction in wound size, two patients were completely healed, and there was no improvement in two patients. At week 4, the average wound bed score had increased to 12.8 and average pain had decreased to 2.35. Almost all patients (N.=19) showed pain reduction, and all the patients increased wound bed score. CONCLUSIONS The blue LED device is promising in terms of promoting wound healing, improving WBS and reducing pain in patients affected by long-term wounds that do not respond to standard treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Canine otitis externa is a painful condition which can be challenging to treat due to difficulties in the administration of otic medication. This can be due to lack of owner compliance in the application of ear drops or due to the resentment that some dogs demonstrate when attempts are made to administer topical medication into a sensitive ear canal. The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy of a topical LED-illuminated gel (LIG) in canine otitis externa in comparison to standard of care therapy. Dogs with spontaneous otitis externa were randomly allocated in three groups: groups QW received LIG once weekly; BW received LIG twice weekly; group C received enrofloxacin and silver sulfadiazine twice daily. LIG consists of a topical application of a gel containing chromophores that, when illuminated by a LED lamp, re-emit fluorescent light which can stimulate physiological responses, promoting healing and controlling bacteria. The evaluation protocol (T0 to T5) considered clinical assessment (OTIS-3-index-scoring-system; pruritus-severity-scale; pain-severity-score; aural temperature), cytological scoring system, quali-quantitative bacteriologic assessment. RESULTS All groups (QW, n = 21; BW, n = 23; C, n = 20) showed improvement during the study (QW: P < 0.02 for cytological and pain scores, P < 0.003 for bacteriologic assessment, P < 10- 4 for pruritus, total OTIS-3 and temperature assessments; BW: P < 10- 4 for all clinical, cytological and bacteriologic assessments; C: P < 0.02 for all clinical and cytological assessments, P < 10- 4 for bacteriologic assessment). The highest clinical score reduction occurred in Group BW (P < 0.014 in T3; P < 0.001 in T4 and P < 10- 4 in T5). BW reached the clinically relevant effect level at T3 (- 3.26 ± 1.21 levels), QW reached it at T4 (- 3.24 ± 0.99), C did not reach it. No differences between groups were seen in the reduction of CFU/mL (T0-T5). CONCLUSIONS All treatment groups showed a positive clinical effect. LIG administered twice-a-week was the most favourable protocol of the study. LIG may be considered beneficial in the management of canine otitis externa; it seems to be effective in controlling the clinical condition, including the signs of inflammation and local pain, the bacterial growth, and it may help increasing treatment compliance.

Abstract
Wound healing is a complex physiological process that occurs in the human body involving the sequential activation of multiple cell types and signaling pathways in a coordinated manner. Chronic wounds and burns clearly decrease quality of life of the patients since they are associated with an increase in physical pain and socio-economical complications. Furthermore, incidence and prevalence of chronic wounds (unlike burns) have been increasing mainly due to population aging resulting in increased costs for national health systems. Thus, the development of new and more cost-effective technologies/therapies is not only of huge interest but also necessary to improve the long-term sustainability of national health systems. This review covers the current knowledge on recent technologies/therapies for skin regeneration, such as: wound dressings; skin substitutes; exogenous growth factor based therapy and systemic therapy; external tissue expanders; negative pressure; oxygen; shock wave, and photobiomodulation wound therapies. Associated benefits and risks as well as the clinical use and availability are all addressed for each therapy. Moreover, future trends in wound care including novel formulations using metallic nanoparticles and topical insulin are herein presented. These novel formulations have shown to be promising therapeutic options in the near future that may change the wound care paradigm.

Abstract
Fluorescent light energy (FLE) has been used to treat various injured tissues in a non-pharmacological and non-thermal fashion. It was applied to stimulate cell proliferation, accelerate healing in chronic and acute wounds, and reduce pain and inflammation. FLE has been shown to reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines while promoting an environment conducive to healing. A possible mechanism of action of FLE is linked to regulation of mitochondrial homeostasis. This work aims to investigate the effect of FLE on mitochondrial homeostasis in an in vitro model of inflammation. Confocal microscopy and gene expression profiling were performed on cultures of inflamed human dermal fibroblasts treated with either direct light from a multi-LED lamp, or FLE from either an amorphous gel or sheet hydrogel matrix. Assessment using confocal microscopy revealed mitochondrial fragmentation in inflamed cells, likely due to exposure to inflammatory cytokines, however, mitochondrial networks were restored to normal 24-h after treatment with FLE. Moreover, gene expression analysis found that treatment with FLE resulted in upregulation of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) and carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1B (CPT1B) genes, which encode proteins favoring mitochondrial ATP production through oxidative phosphorylation and lipid β-oxidation, respectively. These observations demonstrate a beneficial effect of FLE on mitochondrial homeostasis in inflamed cells.

Abstract
Objective: The recently completed EUREKA study confirmed the efficacy and safety profile of fluorescent light energy (FLE) in treating hard-to-heal wounds. To supplement the EUREKA prospective, observational, uncontrolled trial results, researchers selected one of the EUREKA clinical centres to conduct a retrospective analysis of matching wound care data for 46 venous leg ulcers (VLU) patients who had received standard wound care over a five-year period, compared with 10 EUREKA VLU subjects. Method: The study centre selected 46 patients with VLUs based on the matching criteria (wound age and size, patient's age and gender). They compared the healing rates of these matching VLUs with 10 VLU patients treated at the same centre during the EUREKA study. Results: The EUREKA patients had larger and significantly older wounds (p<0.05) and significantly more risk factors (p<0.05) than the matching wounds. However, they had better outcomes (EUREKA: 40% versus matching group: 7% for full wound closure by 16 weeks). No wound breakdown was observed at 16 weeks in the EUREKA group, compared with 25% in the matching group. No EUREKA patient developed infections requiring antibiotics, compared with 37% in the matching group. EUREKA wounds had a mean relative wound area regression (RWAR) of 32% at week six and 50% at week 16, compared with −3% at week six and −6% at week 16 for the matching group. Conclusion: These findings show that the system based on FLE was well-tolerated and efficacious, with better clinical outcome results compared with the wounds analysed in this retrospective matching study and treated with standard of care alone.

Abstract
Wound inflammation is a rapid and highly orchestrated process that significantly impacts the wound healing cascade. Consequent to injury, a series of events set off that include inflammatory, proliferation and maturation phases leading to wound closure and restoration of normal skin integrity. Stimuli causing stress to host immune system or induce inflammatory response include tissue damage and pathogenic microbial infection.Several evidences points towards the positive role of inflammation as it essential to fight against the attack of invading pathogens and to remove dead tissues from the site of injury. Besides its positive role, prolonged inflammation is injurious and may result in deregulated stages of the wound healing which may lead to excessive scarring. Achieving balance in inflammatory cascade is one of the challenging tasks for development of a wound healing drug. This review mainly focuses on the pharmacological control of inflammation by agents which critically balance the inflammatory cascade. However, none of the agent is available in the healthcare market which exclusively plays a role in wound repair. In this review we shall explore different factors or agents affecting inflammation in wound healing. This information might be helpful in designing and development new process, technologies or drugs for better management of wound care. In addition, understanding the effect of inflammation on the outcome of the healing process will serve as a significant milestone in the area of pathological tissue repair.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interdigital pyoderma is a common multifactorial, inflammatory disease of the canine interdigital skin. Lesions commonly become infected secondarily. In addition to management of the underlying cause, management of the chronic inflammatory changes in the interdigital skin created by secondary infection and by the release of keratin into deep tissues is required. Fluorescence biomodulation appears to modulate the inflammatory process in dermatological disorders and has shown promise in preliminary studies evaluating its use in superficial and deep pyoderma in dogs. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of a fluorescence biomodulation (FB) system used in conjunction with systemic antibiotic on clinical manifestations of canine interdigital pyoderma (CIP), compared to dogs treated with antibiotic alone. ANIMALS Thirty-six dogs diagnosed with CIP. METHODS AND MATERIALS Dogs were randomly allocated to treatment groups of either antibiotic alone (Group A) or antibiotic plus twice-weekly FB application (Group B). Dogs were scored over a 12 week period on the basis of two measured parameters: a global lesion score composed of four different lesions types and neutrophil engulfing bacterial scores. RESULTS A statistically significant decrease was seen by Week 3 in both measured parameters for Group B compared to Group A. The mean time-to-resolution of lesions was 4.3 weeks in Group B and 10.4 weeks in Group A. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE The FB system shows promise as an adjunct therapy to systemic antibiotic use in the management of CIP.
