Abstract
BACKGROUND Documentation of lingual tumors is scarce in nonhuman primates. METHODS Through a multi-institutional retrospective study we compile cases of primary and metastatic neoplasia in non-human primates. RESULTS We describe five cases of lingual neoplasia. Three cases are primary lingual tumors: chondro-osteoblastic lipoma in a howler monkey, squamous cell carcinoma, and fibroma in two baboons. We describe two cases of metastatic lymphoma in the tongue in rhesus macaques. A literature review of published lingual neoplasia in nonhuman primates is included in this manuscript. CONCLUSION Lingual neoplasia is seldom reported in non-human primates.

Abstract
Functional pheochromocytomas secrete catecholamines and have been associated with cardiovascular lesions in dogs. This study aimed to describe the post-mortem pathological findings in the cardiovascular system of dogs with pheochromocytoma and to evaluate the expression of cardiac troponin C in these dogs using immunohistochemical analysis. Twelve cases were identified, with a mean age of 10.6 years. The heart of all dogs was enlarged and with concentric hypertrophy of the left ventricular myocardium. Histological analysis showed cardiomyocyte necrosis and degeneration in the myocardium, with frequent bands of contraction, fibrosis, inflammation, and thickening of the medium-calibre arteries in the myocardium. There was a marked decrease or absence of immunolabeling in necrotic cardiomyocytes. We conclude that IHC for troponin C can be a useful tool for detecting myocardial necrosis in dogs with pheochromocytomas, including early cases of necrosis with only incipient cardiac changes where overt histologic abnormalities are not immediately apparent in the cardiomyocytes.

Abstract
Literature concerning veterinary medicine of non-human primates is continuously updated, yet endocrine disorders remain underreported. While case or survey reports of individual endocrinopathies are available, a comprehensive review is not. An exhaustive literature search on this subject via widely used academic search systems, (e.g., Google Scholar, PubMed, BioOne complete and Web of Science), and peer-reviewed publications, proceedings, and newsletters was performed. Selected major endocrine entities will be described with emphasis on clinical signs, morphologic appearances, concomitant diseases, as well as available treatment options. Mostly, no clinical signs were noted and on gross pathology, the endocrine organs were unremarkable. An endocrine-related diagnosis was frequently made as an incidental finding after standard histopathological examination. During the review, the pancreas represented the most affected endocrine organ and diabetes mellitus represented the most clinically significant disorder. Currently, no standard procedure for diagnosing, monitoring, or treating endocrine disorders in non-human primates exists.

Abstract
In a retrospective study of a western pygmy marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea) colony, postmortem examination of 1/8 juvenile and 29/47 adult animals identified vascular, cardiac, and renal lesions consistent with systemic hypertension. This included frequent renal arteriolar hypertrophy, hyaline and proliferative arteriolosclerosis, fibrinoid necrosis of arterioles, glomerulosclerosis, and nephrosclerosis. Affected animals ranged from 0.6 to 12 years of age (mean 6 years) and had an observed male predominance. Genealogical relatedness was evident in several breeding pairs and spanned multiple generations. Concurrent cardiac and renal disease was commonly identified, although frequently subclinical, and both were important causes of morbidity and mortality in affected animals. Cardiomegaly and hypertrophy were typical features and were accompanied by left atrial thrombosis in 10 animals. Signs of heart failure included chronic pulmonary edema in 20 cases and body cavity effusions in 17. In the kidneys, 19 cases had glomerular disease and hypertensive vasculopathy, and 26 cases had nephrosclerosis or glomerulosclerosis. Common extrarenal secondary causes of hypertension were excluded by necropsy examination. The pathogenesis is suggested to involve primary hypertension leading to renal and cardiac disease. Elevated sympathetic activity might be an underlying factor in the frequent development of primary systemic hypertension in the pygmy marmoset, as for the owl monkey.

Abstract
Four aged retired Chinese native pigs, three females and one male, estimated as over
10-year-old, were subjected to autopsy because of infertility due to aging. Grossly,
nodular lesions were found bilaterally in the adrenal medulla of all four pigs. Based on
the gross and the histopathological findings, they were diagnosed as either medullary
nodular hyperplasia or pheochromocytoma. Immunohistochemically, proliferating cells of all
these lesions were immuno-positive for chromogranin-A, indicating adrenal medulla-derived.
Ultrastructurally, cytoplasmic neurosecretory granules suggestive of secretion were
observed in these proliferating cells. There have been only limited numbers of reports on
adrenal medullar proliferative changes including pheochromocytoma in pigs. The present
cases will provide a valuable information for the characterization of similar changes in
animals and human.

Abstract
Clouded leopards in North American zoological institutions have a high frequency of pheochromocytomas and were identified in 32 of 70 (45%) animals necropsied. Archival sections of adrenal gland from 20 adult clouded leopards with unilateral or bilateral pheochromocytomas collected between 1984 and 2011 were examined by light microscopy and immunohistochemistry, and case demographics were reviewed. Affected leopards were older than 10 years of age (mean, 16 years; range, 11-19 years), and males were overrepresented (12 males, 8 females). Pedigree analysis yielded no evidence for heritability. Five clouded leopards had bilateral neoplasms. Pheochromocytoma was the cause of death due to invasion of the caudal vena cava and fatal hemorrhage in 4 cases. Most pheochromocytomas were well-demarcated, nodular, and expansile masses composed of cords and packets of neoplastic polygonal cells. Five pheochromocytomas had vascular invasion, of which 4 resulted in hemorrhage that was the cause of death. One of the latter pheochromocytomas also had pulmonary metastasis. Ultrastructurally, neoplastic cells had cytoplasmic structures consistent with both norepinephrine- and epinephrine-containing granules. In all cases, neoplasms were immunohistochemically positive for chromogranin A, protein gene product 9.5, and synaptophysin. A subset of neoplasms evaluated by tissue microarray were positive for met-enkephalin and β-endorphin and negative for melan-A. Histologically, 7 of 20 (35%) clouded leopards with pheochromocytomas had retinal detachment, retinal degeneration, or intramyocardial muscular arteriosclerosis, suggestive of hypertension. Pheochromocytomas can cause mortality and may be a source of clinically significant hypertension in clouded leopards. These neoplasms share similar histologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural characteristics with those of other species.

Abstract
The combination of loss of habitat, human population encroachment, and increased demand of select nonhuman primates for biomedical research has significantly affected populations. There remains a need for knowledge and expertise in understanding background findings as related to the age, source, strain, and disease status of nonhuman primates. In particular, for safety/biomedical studies, a broader understanding and documentation of lesions would help clarify background from drug-related findings. A workshop and a minisymposium on spontaneous lesions and diseases in nonhuman primates were sponsored by the concurrent Annual Meetings of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology held December 3-4, 2011, in Nashville, Tennessee. The first session had presentations from Drs Lowenstine and Montali, pathologists with extensive experience in wild and zoo populations of nonhuman primates, which was followed by presentations of 20 unique case reports of rare or newly observed spontaneous lesions in nonhuman primates (see online files for access to digital whole-slide images corresponding to each case report at http://www.scanscope.com/ACVP%20Slide%20Seminars/2011/Primate%20Pathology/view.apml). The minisymposium was composed of 5 nonhuman-primate researchers (Drs Bradley, Cline, Sasseville, Miller, Hutto) who concentrated on background and spontaneous lesions in nonhuman primates used in drug safety studies. Cynomolgus and rhesus macaques were emphasized, with some material presented on common marmosets. Congenital, acquired, inflammatory, and neoplastic changes were highlighed with a focus on clinical, macroscopic, and histopathologic findings that could confound the interpretation of drug safety studies.

Abstract
Endocrine tumors are rarely observed in pigs, and pheochromocytomas have been only punctually described. The current report describes a white and firm, 15-cm in diameter, neoplastic mass located in the adrenal gland with metastasis to regional lymph nodes in a 2.5-year-old sow. The masses had marked desmoplasia that supported a population of polygonal-to-spindle-shaped neoplastic cells arranged into cords and packets within a delicate fibrovascular stroma. Immunohistochemical staining of the tumor was positive for chromogranin and negative for neurofilament protein in adrenal and lymph node masses, which was characteristic of a malignant pheochromocytoma.
