Analysis of the cost function used in simulated annealing for CT image reconstruction

Simulated Annealing-Based Image Reconstruction for Patients With COVID-19 as a Model for Ultralow-Dose Computed Tomography

The proposed algorithm of inverse problem of computed tomography (CT), using limited views, is based on stochastic techniques, namely simulated annealing (SA). The selection of an optimal cost function for SA-based image reconstruction is of prime importance. It can reduce annealing time, and also X-ray dose rate accompanying better image quality. In this paper, effectiveness of various cost functions, namely universal image quality index (UIQI), root-mean-squared error (RMSE), structural similarity index measure (SSIM), mean absolute error (MAE), relative squared error (RSE), relative absolute error (RAE), and root-mean-squared logarithmic error (RMSLE), has been critically analyzed and evaluated for ultralow-dose X-ray CT of patients with COVID-19. For sensitivity analysis of this ill-posed problem, the stochastically estimated images of lung phantom have been reconstructed. The cost function analysis in terms of computational and spatial complexity has been performed using image quality measures, namely peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), Euclidean error (EuE), and weighted peak signal-to-noise ratio (WPSNR). It has been generalized for cost functions that RMSLE exhibits WPSNR of 64.33 ± 3.98 dB and 63.41 ± 2.88 dB for 8 × 8 and 16 × 16 lung phantoms, respectively, and it has been applied for actual CT-based image reconstruction of patients with COVID-19. We successfully reconstructed chest CT images of patients with COVID-19 using RMSLE with eighteen projections, a 10-fold reduction in radiation dose exposure. This approach will be suitable for accurate diagnosis of patients with COVID-19 having less immunity and sensitive to radiation dose.

Three-dimensional X-ray observation of atmospheric biological samples by linear-array scanning-electron generation X-ray microscope system

Recently, we developed a soft X-ray microscope called the scanning-electron generation X-ray microscope (SGXM), which consists of a simple X-ray detection system that detects X-rays emitted from the interaction between a scanning electron beam (EB) and the thin film of the sample mount. We present herein a three-dimensional (3D) X-ray detection system that is based on the SGXM technology and designed for studying atmospheric biological samples. This 3D X-ray detection system contains a linear X-ray photodiode (PD) array. The specimens are placed under a CuZn-coated Si₃N₄ thin film, which is attached to an atmospheric sample holder. Multiple tilt X-ray images of the samples are detected simultaneously by the linear array of X-ray PDs, and the 3D structure is calculated by a new 3D reconstruction method that uses a simulated-annealing algorithm. The resulting 3D models clearly reveal the inner structure of the bacterium. In addition, the proposed method can easily be used for diverse samples in a broad range of scientific fields.

Biplane X-ray angiograms, intravascular ultrasound, and 3D visualization of coronary vessels

The technology for determination of the 3D vascular tree and quantitative characterization of the vessel lumen and vessel wall has become available. With this technology, cardiologists will no longer rely primarily on visual inspection of coronary angiograms but use sophisticated modeling techniques combining images from various modalities for the evaluation of coronary artery disease and the effects of treatment. Techniques have been developed which allow the calculation of the imaging geometry and the 3D position of the vessel centerlines of the vascular tree from biplane views without a calibration object, i.e., from the images themselves, removing the awkwardness of moving the patient to obtain 3D information. With the geometry and positional information, techniques for reconstructing the vessel lumen can now be applied that provide more accurate estimates of the area and shape of the vessel lumen. In conjunction with these developments, techniques have been developed for combining information from intravascular ultrasound images with the information obtained from angiography. The combination of these technologies will yield a more comprehensive characterization and understanding of coronary artery disease and should lead to improved and perhaps less invasive patient care.

Automatic retinal image registration scheme using global optimization techniques

Retinal image registration is commonly required in order to combine the complementary information in different retinal modalities. In this paper, a new automatic scheme to register retinal images is presented and is currently tested in a clinical environment. The scheme considers the suitability and efficiency of different image transformation models and function optimization techniques, following an initial preprocessing stage. Three different transformation models--affine, bilinear and projective--as well as three optimization techniques--downhill simplex method, simulated annealing and genetic algorithms--are investigated and compared in terms of accuracy and efficiency. The registration of 26 pairs of Fluoroscein Angiography and Indocyanine Green Chorioangiography images with the corresponding Red-Free retinal images, showed the superiority of combining genetic algorithms with the affine and bilinear transformation models. A comparative study of the proposed automatic registration scheme against the manual method, commonly used in the clinical practice, is finally presented showing the advantage of the proposed automatic scheme in terms of accuracy and consistency.

A 3D reconstruction of vascular structures from two X-ray angiograms using an adapted simulated annealing algorithm

A three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the vessel lumen from two angiographic views, based on the reconstruction of a series of cross-sections, is proposed. Assuming uniform mixing of contrast medium and background subtraction, the cross-section of each vessel is reconstructed through a binary representation. A priori information about both the slice to be reconstructed and the relationships between adjacent slices are incorporated to lessen ambiguities on the reconstruction. Taking into account the knowledge of normal vessel geometry, an initial solution of each slice is created using an elliptic model-based method. This initial solution is then deformed to be made consistent with projection data while being constrained into a connected realistic shape. For that purpose, properties on the expected optimal solution are described through a Markov random field. To find an optimal solution, a specific optimization algorithm based on simulated annealing is used. The method performs well both on single vessels and on branching vessels possessing an additional inherent ambiguity when viewed at oblique angles. Results on 2D slice independent reconstruction and 3D reconstruction of a stack of spatially continuous 2D slices are presented for single vessels and bifurcations.
