Temperature imaging in a supersonic free jet of combustion gases with two-line OH fluorescence

Simultaneous multiple laser beam intensity profile correction and its application to a vitiated bluff body combustor field

Simultaneous high-speed stereo-particle image velocimetry, OH planar-laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), and CH₂O PLIF measurements in a vitiated bluff body combustor are considered. An ex situ, simultaneous, time-resolved laser sheet intensity profile correction procedure is introduced. This procedure is easily implemented experimentally and is capable of correcting multiple sheets at the same time. As a proof of concept, the procedure is applied to perform correction of the CH₂O PLIF images in vitiated and unvitiated conditions. The challenges associated with CH₂O PLIF under these combustor operating conditions are also discussed.

Laser-Plasma Spectroscopy of Hydroxyl with Applications

This article discusses laser-induced laboratory-air plasma measurements and analysis of hydroxyl (OH) ultraviolet spectra. The computations of the OH spectra utilize line strength data that were developed previously and that are now communicated for the first time. The line strengths have been utilized extensively in interpretation of recorded molecular emission spectra and have been well-tested in laser-induced fluorescence applications for the purpose of temperature inferences from recorded data. Moreover, new experiments with Q-switched laser pulses illustrate occurrence of molecular recombination spectra for time delays of the order of several dozen of microseconds after plasma initiation. The OH signals occur due to the natural humidity in laboratory air. Centrifugal stretching of the Franck-Condon factors and r-centroids are included in the process of determining the line strengths that are communicated as a Supplementary File. Laser spectroscopy applications of detailed OH computations include laser-induced plasma and combustion analyses, to name but two applications. This work also includes literature references that address various diagnosis applications.

Nitric-oxide planar laser-induced fluorescence applied to low-pressure hypersonic flow fields for the imaging of mixture fraction

The scalar-field imaging of a hypersonic mixing flow is performed in a mixing facility that is shock tunnel driven. The instantaneous mixture-fraction field of a hypersonic two-dimensional mixing layer (M1 = 5.1, M2 = 0.3) is determined with a temperature-insensitive planar laser-induced fluorescence technique with nitric oxide (NO) as the tracer species. Single-shot images are obtained with the broadband excitation of a reduced temperature-sensitivity transition in the A2 sigma+ <-- X2 II(1/2) (0, 0) band of NO near 226 nm. The instantaneous mixture-fraction field at a convective Mach number of 2.64 is shown to be nearly identical to a typical diffusive process, supporting the notion of gradient-transport mixing models for highly compressible mixing layers.
