Passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser at C-band region based on WS₂ saturable absorber

Ameliorating the stability of erbium-doped fiber laser using saturable absorber fabricated by the pulsed laser deposition technique

In this paper, we present the performance and stability of an erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) based on ZnO saturable-absorber (SA) prepared using two schemes: solution method (SM) and pulsed laser deposition technique (PLDT). It was observed that EDFL with ZnO-SA prepared using SM emits at 1561.25 nm under a pump power of 230 mW. As the pump power is increased from 22.2 mW to 75.3 mW, the pulse duration decreases from 24.91 to 10.69 µs, and the pulse repetition rates increase from 11.59 to 40.91 kHz. Besides at pump power of 75.3 mW, the peak power, pulse energy, and average output power are measured as 0.327 mW, 2.86 nJ, and 0.18 mW, respectively. However, when PLDT-based SA was incorporated into the ring cavity, the emission wavelength is noticed at 1568.21 nm at a pump power of 230 mW. With the increase in pump power from 22.2 mW to 418 mW, the pulse repetition rates increase from 10.79 to 79.37 kHz and the pulse width decreases from 23.58 to 5.6 µs. Furthermore, the peak power, pulse energy, and average output power are observed to be 10.9 mW, 74 nJ, and 5.35 mW, respectively. The stability of EDFL based on SAs prepared using SM and PLDT has also been investigated. To the best of the author's knowledge, it is the first comparison of performance and long-term stability of EDFL based on two experimental techniques SM and PLDT-based SAs. These findings suggest that PLDT-based SAs provides optimum stability over a long period and enhanced the performance of fiber lasers compared to the SAs prepared using the conventional SM technique. This study paves the way for the development of ultra-stable SAs for their potential applications in pulsed laser sources and photonic devices.

MoS2/MXene pillared nanocomposite for ultrafast photonics applications

In this work, we used nanocomposite saturable absorbers (SAs) in order to precisely design and modulate the process of compositing the light absorption by band gap engineering. Due to the higher absorption intensity of our MoS₂/MXene nanocomposite, we have successfully shortened the pulse duration (1.2μs) of SA with enhancing saturable absorption intensity (7.22 MW cm^-2), and the ultra-fast fiber laser based on this nanocomposite SA has shown wider Q-switching stable range in the case of high pump power. This strategy can efficiently improve the performance of SA and shows the potential application prospect of nanocomposites in nonlinear optics.

All-fiber integrated saturable absorber-tunable wavelength filter for Q-switching laser in both C- and L-bands

We proposed and experimentally demonstrated combining a nonlinear optic saturable absorber and a wideband-tunable spectral filter in a single graphene oxide (GO) film deposited fiber optic device. The GO film was prepared on the cleaved facet of an optical fiber applying two sequential processes: the electrical deposition to make a thick GO film using an arc fusion splicer, followed by the laser pulse drilling to form a multi-layered GO film. The GO deposited fiber facet and a pristine fiber facet formed an asymmetric Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI), whose spectral response was flexibly controlled by adjusting the air gap between them. An all-fiber ring laser cavity was built using the proposed device as a tunable saturable absorber along with erbium-doped fiber as a gain medium in the L-band. Stable Q-switching laser pulse trains were successfully generated, whose pulse duration was in the order of a few microseconds and its peak wavelength was tunable over 40nm from 1564 to 1604nm covering both C-and L-bands. At a certain condition, we also obtained Q-switching pulses simultaneously lasing at the double wavelengths, 1573.3 and 1586.7nm. Detailed device fabrication processes and laser characteristics are described to elucidate the high potential of 2-dimensional material films in nonlinear optics.

Tunable passively Q-switched thulium-fluoride fiber laser in the S+/S band (1450.0 to 1512.0 nm) region using a single-walled carbon-nanotube-based saturable absorber

A tunable passively Q-switched for S+/S band thulium-fluoride fiber (TFF) laser using single-walled carbon nanotubes as a saturable absorber is proposed and demonstrated. The tunability of the proposed laser covers a wavelength region of 1450.0-1512.0 nm, with a range of 62.0 nm. Stable Q-switched operation can be obtained at a pump power of 115.7-229.9 mW at 1492.0 nm. The resulting pulses have a measured repetition rate and pulse width of 12.0-36.4 kHz and 6.2-3.6 μs, respectively. The maximum pulse energy that was achieved in this experiment is 122.8 nJ. To the author's knowledge, this is the first reported tunable passively Q-switched TFF laser that covers the S+/S region that has been demonstrated.

High-damage-resistant tungsten disulfide saturable absorber mirror for passively Q-switched fiber laser

In this paper, we demonstrate a high-damage-resistant tungsten disulfide saturable absorber mirror (WS₂-SAM) fabricated by magnetron sputtering technique. The WS₂-SAM has an all-fiber-integrated configuration and high-damage-resistant merit because the WS₂ layer is protected by gold film so as to avoid being oxidized and destroyed at high pump power. Employing the WS₂-SAM in an Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) with linear cavity, the stable Q-switching operation is achieved at central wavelength of 1560 nm, with the repetition rates ranging from 29.5 kHz to 367.8 kHz and the pulse duration ranging from 1.269 μs to 154.9 ns. For the condition of the maximum pump power of 600 mW, the WS₂-SAM still works stably with an output power of 25.2 mW, pulse energy of 68.5 nJ, and signal-noise-ratio of 42 dB. The proposed WS₂-SAM configuration provides a promising solution for advanced pulsed fiber lasers with the characteristics of high damage resistance, high output energy, and wide tunable frequency.

Tunable Q-switched fiber laser using zinc oxide nanoparticles as a saturable absorber

Nanomaterials have ignited new interest due to their distinctive electronic, mechanical, and optical properties. Zinc oxide nanostructures are fabricated into thin film and then inserted between two fiber ferrules to act as a saturable absorber (SA). The modulation depth and insertion loss of the SA are 5% and 3.5 dB, respectively. When the ZnO-SA is incorporated into the laser cavity, a stable Q-switched pulse tunable from 1536 to 1586 nm (50 nm range) with pulse energy up to 46 nJ was observed. Our result suggests that ZnO is a promising broadband SA to generate passively Q-switched fiber lasers.
