Abstract
Matrix effect is one of the obstacles that hinders the rapid development of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), and it is currently a hot, challenging, and focal point in research. To eliminate the matrix effect, this study proposed a plasma parameters correction method based on plasma image-spectrum fusion (PPC-PISF). This method corrects the total number density, plasma temperature, and electron number density variations caused by matrix effect using effective features in plasma images and spectra. To verify the feasibility of this method, experiments were conducted on pressed and metal samples, and the results were compared with those corrected by image-assisted LIBS (IA-LIBS). For the pressed samples, after correction by PPC-PISF, the R2 of the calibration curves all improved to above 0.993, the average root-mean-square error (RMSE) decreased by 41.05%, and the average relative error (ARE) decreased by 59.35% evenly in comparison to IA-LIBS. For the metal samples, after correction by PPC-PISF, the R2 of the calibration curves all increased to above 0.997. Additionally, the RMSE decreased by 29.63% evenly, the average ARE decreased by 38.74% compared to IA-LIBS. The experimental results indicate that this method is an effective method for eliminating the matrix effect, promoting the further development of LIBS in industrial detection.

Abstract
Self-absorption and unknown transition probabilities of the analytical lines hinder the accurate quantitative elemental analysis of bismuth brass with conventional calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). In this work, target-enhanced orthogonal double-pulse LIBS combined with a variant one-point calibration method was used to solve this problem and realize quantitative elemental analysis of bismuth brass with a relative error of less than 4%. This approach is able to reduce the influence of self-absorption and capable of using analytical lines with unknown transition probabilities while using a calibration-free algorithm, which is helpful for accurate quantitative elemental analysis of bismuth brass and other samples.

Abstract
Calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (CF-LIBS) is a very useful elemental analysis technique. However, it requires knowledge of transition probabilities of the analytical lines. To solve this problem, a variant one-point calibration (OPC) LIBS method was proposed. Quantitative elemental analysis on Cu-Zn-Ag-Au alloys was realized with this method capable of using zinc analytical lines with unknown transition probabilities. The relative error was demonstrated to be less than 3.3%. This variant OPC method will be helpful for quantitative elemental analysis of different samples using CF-LIBS, no matter whether the transition probabilities of the observed lines are known or unknown.

Abstract
Huanglongbing (HLB) is one of the most devastating bacterial diseases in citrus growth and there is no cure for it. The mastery of elemental migration and transformation patterns can effectively analyze the growth of crops. The law of element migration and transformation in citrus growth is not very clear. In order to obtain the law of element migration and transformation, healthy and HLB-asymptomatic navel oranges collected in the field were taken as research objects. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an atomic spectrometry technique for material component analysis. By analyzing the element composition of fruit flesh, peel and soil, it can know the specific process of nutrient exchange and energy exchange between plants and the external environment, as well as the rules of internal nutrient transportation, distribution and energy transformation. Through the study of elemental absorption, the growth of navel orange can be effectively monitored in real time. HLB has an inhibitory effect on the absorption of navel orange. In order to improve the detection efficiency, LIBS coupled with SVM algorithms was used to distinguish healthy navel oranges and HLB-asymptomatic navel oranges. The classification accuracy was 100%. Compared with the traditional detection method, the detection efficiency of LIBS technology is significantly better than the polymerase chain reaction method, which provides a new means for the diagnosis of HLB-asymptomatic citrus fruits.

Abstract
The single sample calibration laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (SSC-LIBS) is quite suitable for the fields where the standard sample is hard to obtain, including space exploration, geology, archaeology, and jewelry identification. But in practice, the self-absorption effect of plasma destroys the linear relationship of spectral intensity and element concentration based on the Lomakin-Scherbe formula which is the guarantee of the high accuracy of the SSC-LIBS. Thus, the self-absorption effect limits the quantitative accuracy of SSC-LIBS greatly. In this work, an improved SSC-LIBS with self-absorption correction (SSC-LIBS with SAC) is proposed for the promotion of quantitative accuracy of SSC-LIBS. The SSC-LIBS with SAC can correct the intensity ratio of spectral lines in the calculation of SSC-LIBS through relative self-absorption coefficient K without complicated preparatory information. The alloy samples and pressed ore samples were used to verify the effect of the SSC-LIBS with SAC. Compared with SSC-LIBS, for alloy samples, the average RMSEP and average ARE of SSC-LIBS with SAC decreased from 0.83 wt.% and 13.75% to 0.40 wt.% and 4.06%, respectively. For the pressed ore samples, the average RMSEP and average ARE of SSC-LIBS with SAC decreased from 4.77 wt.% and 90.48% to 2.34 wt.% and 14.60%. The experimental result indicates that SSC-LIBS with SAC has a great improvement of quantitative accuracy and better universality compared with traditional SSC-LIBS, which is a mighty promotion of the wide application of SSC-LIBS.

Abstract
The contamination of water sources by anthropogenic activities is a topic of growing interest in the scientific community. Therefore, robust analytical techniques for the determination and quantification of multiple substances are needed, which often require complex and time-consuming procedures. In this context, we describe a univariate calibration method to determine emerging multi-class contaminants in different water sources. The instrumental setup is composed of a lab-made glass electrochemical cell with three electrodes: Pt counter, Ag/AgCl reference, and BDD working electrodes. With this system, we were able to simultaneously quantify tert-butylhydroquinone, acetaminophen, estrone, sulfamethoxazole, enrofloxacin, caffeine, and ibuprofen by differential pulse voltammetry. Only two calibration solutions are required for the Single-shot Dilution Differential Pulse Voltammetric Calibration (SSD-DP-VC) method described here, which can significantly improve sample throughput. Two robust univariate calibration strategies were also applied and compared with SSD-DP-VC. The new method is simple, fast, and comparable with traditional calibration methods, showing similar precision and accuracy for all determinations evaluated.

Abstract
The existence of the self-absorption effect results in a nonlinear relationship between spectral intensity and elemental concentration, which dramatically affect the quantitative accuracy of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), especially calibration-free LIBS (CF-LIBS). In this work, the CF-LIBS with columnar density and standard reference line (CF-LIBS with CD-SRL) was proposed to improve the quantitative accuracy of CF-LIBS analysis by exploiting self-absorption. Our method allows using self-absorbed lines to perform the calibration-free approach directly and does not require self-absorption correction algorithms. To verify this method, the experiment was conducted both on aluminium-bronze and aluminium alloy samples. Compared with classical CF-LIBS, the average errors (AEs) of CF-LIBS with CD-SRL were decreased from 3.20%, 3.22%, 3.15% and 3.01%-0.95%, 1.00%, 1.16% and 1.78%, respectively for four aluminium-bronze alloy samples. The AEs were decreased from 0.66%, 0.70%, 0.89% and 1.30%-0.43%, 0.61%, 0.77% and 0.33%, respectively for four aluminium alloy samples. The experimental results demonstrated that CF-LIBS with CD-SRL provided higher quantitative accuracy and stronger adaptability than classical CF-LIBS, which is quite helpful for the practical application of CF-LIBS.

Abstract
Matrix-matching calibration (MMC), two-point calibration transfer (TP CT), one-point and multi-line calibration (OP MLC), single-sample calibration (SSC) and calibration free (CF) were evaluated in order to overcome matrix effects in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). These calibration strategies were evaluated for direct determination of Al and Pb in waste printed circuit boards (PCB) using direct solids analysis by LIBS. Each strategy has limitations and advantages of its implementation, for the correction of matrix effects, so that it allows elementary determination with adequate accuracy. The MMC and CF proved to be excellent calibration strategies for the determination of strategic (Al) and toxic (Pb) elements by LIBS, with good recoveries (ranging from 80-120%) and low relative standard deviation (RSD%) values. A detailed discussion of the advantages and limitations of each of these five calibration strategies evaluated for LIBS is presented in this study. Lead concentrations in waste PCB samples are 5-12 times higher than established by Directive 2011/65/EU, and the samples analyzed contain between 3 and 55 g kg-1 Al, being an interesting economic and recycling source for this metal.

Abstract
Nutrient profile determination for plant materials is an important task to determine the quality and safety of the human diet. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an atomic emission spectrometry of the material component analytical technique. However, quantitative analysis of plant materials using LIBS usually suffers from matrix effects and nonlinear self-absorption. To overcome this problem, a hybrid quantitative analysis model of the partial least squares-artificial neural network (PLS-ANN) was used to detect the compositions of plant materials in the air. Specifically, fifty-eight plant materials were prepared to split into calibration, validation and prediction sets. Nine nutrient composition profiles of Mg, Fe, N, Al, B, Ca, K, Mn, and P were employed as the target elements for quantitative analysis. It demonstrated that the prediction ability can be significantly improved by the use of the PLS-ANN hybrid model compared to the method of standard calibration. Take Mg and K as examples, the root-mean-square errors of calibration (RMSEC) of Mg and K were decreased from 0.0295 to 0.0028 wt.% and 0.2884 to 0.0539 wt.%, and the mean percent prediction errors (MPE) were decreased from 5.82 to 4.22% and 8.82 to 4.12%, respectively. This research provides a new way to improve the accuracy of LIBS for quantitative analysis of plant materials.

Abstract
Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) coupled with the linear multivariate calibration method was applied to analyze nitrogen (N) quantitatively in ammonium phosphate fertilizers. The intensity of lines N (NI:742.4, 744.2, 746.8, 856.7, 859.4, 862.9, 870.3, 871.2, 871.8 nm) and O (OI:777.2, 844.6, 882.0 nm) were used as independent variables for the models. To verify the accuracy of the models, the unary, binary, ternary, and quaternary variables were chosen to establish the linear regression equations. The results of the linear models showed that the quaternary model was better than the other three models. The correlation coefficient of the quaternary linear model was 0.981 and the maximum relative error of the validation samples was 4.32%.

Accuracy improvement of quantitative analysis for major elements in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy using single-sample calibration. Anal Chim Acta 2019; 1064:11-16. Abstract
Accurate determination of major elements using limited standard samples is always a big challenge in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Based on a simple calculation process, we propose a new one-point calibration method called single-sample calibration LIBS (SSC-LIBS) to build the calibration and improve the accuracy of determination of major elements. In this work, several major elements (Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Nb, and Mo) in three sets of matrix-matched certified samples were determined without sample preparation. The results showed that compared with multipoint calibration LIBS (MPC-LIBS), the R2, RMSECV, and ARE of Cu elements were improved from 0.40 to 0.97, 3.55 wt% to 0.76 wt%, and 5.19% to 1.05%, respectively, while the ARSD decreased from 16.22% to 1.15%. Furthermore, the AREs in the concentration ranges of 1-10, 10-20, 30-40, 50-60, 60-70, and 80-100 wt% were 5.16%, 2.55%, 1.75%, 1.69%, 1.05%, and 0.44%, respectively, with almost all less than 5%, as calculated by SSC-LIBS. These results demonstrated that SSC-LIBS can improve the accuracy and stability of detecting major elements using only one standard sample, which can greatly promote the application of LIBS.
