Tuning characteristics of narrowband THz radiation generated via optical rectification in periodically poled lithium niobate

Superoscillations Deliver Superspectroscopy

In ordinary circumstances the highest frequency present in a wave is the highest frequency in its Fourier decomposition. It is however possible for there to be a spatial or temporal region where the wave locally oscillates at a still greater frequency in a phenomenon known as superoscillation. Superoscillations find application in wide range of disciplines, but at present their generation is based upon constructive approaches that are difficult to implement. Here, we address this, exploiting the fact that superoscillations are a product of destructive interference to produce a prescription for generating superoscillations from the superposition of arbitrary waveforms. As a first test of the technique, we use it to combine four quasisinusoidal THz waveforms to produce THz optical superoscillations for the first time. The ability to generate superoscillations in this manner has potential application in a wide range of fields, which we demonstrate with a method we term "superspectroscopy." This employs the generated superoscillations to obtain an observed enhancement of almost an order of magnitude in the spectroscopic sensitivity to materials whose resonance lies outside the range of the component waveform frequencies.

Conversion efficiency improvement of terahertz wave generation laterally emitted by a ridge-type periodically poled lithium niobate

We demonstrate terahertz (THz) wave generation by wavelength conversion in a ridge-type/bulk periodically poled lithium niobate (RT-/bulk-PPLN) under almost the same experimental conditions. When using the RT-PPLN, the ridge structure works as a slab waveguide for the incident pump beam (wavelength: ∼1 μm), and the generated THz wave (∼200 μm) was emitted uniformly from the entire side surface of the crystal. The RT-PPLN has a much higher conversion efficiency from the pumping beam to the THz wave than the bulk-PPLN, and the ratio improved several ten times compared with those of previous studies.

Terahertz detection by upconversion to the near-infrared using picosecond pulses

The detection of terahertz photons by using silicon-based devices enabled by visible photons is one of the fundamental ideas of quantum optics. Here, we present a classical detection principle using optical upconversion of terahertz photons to the near-infrared spectral range in the picosecond pulse regime, which finally enables the detection with a conventional sCMOS camera. By superimposing terahertz and optical pump pulses in a periodically poled lithium-niobate crystal, terahertz photons at 0.87 THz are converted to optical photons with wavelengths close to the central pump wavelength of 776 nm. A tunable delay between the pulses helps overlap the pulses and enables time-of-flight measurements. Using a sCMOS camera, we achieve a dynamic range of 47.8 dB with a signal to noise ratio of 23.5 dB at a measurement time of one second, in our current setup.

Generation of narrowband terahertz radiation via phonon mode enhanced nonlinearities in a BaGa4Se7 crystal

We report on narrowband terahertz (THz) radiation generation via optical rectification from a BaGa₄Se₇ crystal. The dense phonon mode distribution of the BaGa₄Se₇ crystal causes narrow transmission bands in the THz frequency range with enhanced nonlinear susceptibility magnitudes, thus permitting strong narrowband THz radiation generation at the frequencies of 1.97 and 2.34 THz. In comparison to THz radiation generated from a ZnTe crystal, the narrowband THz radiation produced by the BaGa₄Se₇ crystal is 4.5 times higher at 1.97 THz and 63% higher at 2.34 THz, thus making BaGa₄Se₇ a viable crystal for use in such areas as security and medicine.

Tunable Backward Terahertz-wave Parametric Oscillation

Backward optical parametric oscillation has attracted attention for cavityless spectral narrowband generation based on perfect photon conversion. Few demonstrations have shown its potential from the aspect of nonlinear photonics; therefore, the mechanisms of momentum conservation among interacting light waves have been concealed by the restricted configuration under the phase-matching condition of periodically poled structures. Here, we unveil a tunable mechanism in the terahertz region by active control of the phase-matching condition. The tunability of backward terahertz-wave parametric oscillation is investigated using a quasi-collinear phase-matching model and its frequency range from the sub-terahertz to terahertz region is identified. Transform-limited terahertz-wave pulse is achieved simply by installing a device on the pump propagating line with no cavity. Moreover, the cascading terahertz-wave generation enhances the photon conversion efficiency, thus making nonlinear optics and its applications more promising. The results highlight new capabilities for using modern ferroelectric materials and encourage further research on nonlinear optics.

Intracavity parametric generation of nanosecond terahertz radiation using quasi-phase-matching

We report the use of quasi-phase-matching techniques based on periodically-poled MgO:LiNbO(3) for the generation of nanosecond duration pulses of terahertz radiation in intracavity optical parametric oscillators. Multiple idler-waves are generated with temporal studies indicating that the initiating process is the expected parametric down-conversion, but followed by cascaded difference frequency generation. A number of grating geometries have been explored, revealing the presence of dual solutions for the quasi-phase-matching process in the general case. Choice of grating parameters so as to minimize oscillation threshold while simultaneously ensuring effective extraction of the THz radiation is considered.

Characterization of domain structure of periodically poled Mg:LiNbO3 through multifrequency terahertz generation

Terahertz (THz) wave generation in a periodically poled Mg:LiNbO3 crystal was detected by a pump-probe technique and analyzed using frequency and time-frequency spectra. Multifrequency THz waves were clearly observed, providing information about the domain structure of the crystal. A theoretical T-function model was used to fit the frequency spectrum. A method that can characterize the detailed domain structure and THz capabilities of the inner crystal's parts is proposed.

Nanosecond terahertz optical parametric oscillator with a novel quasi phase matching scheme in lithium niobate

We present an optical parametric oscillator pumped by a single mode Q-switched nanosecond Nd:YVO(4) laser for terahertz generation in periodically poled lithium niobate with a new phase matching scheme. This new method leads to an emission of terahertz radiation close to the Cherenkov angle and to a parallel propagation of the pump and signal wave. The emission frequency of this novel source is chosen by the poling period to 1.5 THz. For spectral narrowing the signal wave of the OPO is injection seeded. In the optical spectrum also cascaded processes are observed demonstrating a powerful generation of terahertz waves.
