Single-shot kilohertz characterization of ultrashort pulses by spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction

Single-shot reconstruction of spectral amplitude and phase in a fiber ring cavity at a 80 MHz repetition rate

Femtosecond pulses circulating in a synchronously driven fiber ring cavity have complex amplitude and phase profiles that can change completely from one round-trip to the next. We use a recently developed technique, combining dispersive Fourier transformation) with spectral interferometry, to reconstruct the spectral amplitude and phase at each round-trip and, thereby, follow in detail the pulse reorganization that occurs. We focus on two different regimes: a period-two regime in which the pulse alternates between two distinct states and a highly complex regime. We characterize the spectral amplitude and phase of the pulses in both regimes at a repetition rate of 75.6 MHz and find good agreement with modeling of the system based on numerical solutions of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation with feedback.

Self-referenced spectral interferometry for single-shot measurement of sub-5-fs pulses

We demonstrate a novel approach for the extension of self-referenced spectral interferometry to the temporal characterization of few-optical cycle pulses. The new experimental setup is characterized by low dispersion and a collinear geometry. 4-fs pulses have been characterized by performing single-shot measurements, with high dynamic range on a broad temporal region. An independent measurement of the pulse duration, obtained by using attosecond streaking, allowed us to cross-check the experimental technique.

Accuracy measurements and improvement for complete characterization of optical pulses from nonlinear processes via multiple spectral-shearing interferometry

We demonstrate that multiple spectral-shearing interferometry increases the precision and accuracy of measurements of the spectral phase of a complex pulse (time-bandwidth product = 125) arising from self-phase modulation in a gas filled capillary. We verify that the measured interferometric phase is accurate to 0.1 rad across the full bandwidth by checking the consistency between the spectral phases of each individual shear measurement. The accuracy of extracting pulse parameters (group delay dispersion, pulse duration and peak intensity) for single shear measurements were verified to better than 10% by comparison with the multishear reconstruction. High order space-time coupling is quantified across a single transverse dimension, verifying the suitability of such pulses for use in strong field experiments.

Spectral shearing interferometer with frequency- and time-resolved sum-frequency mixing

A two-dimensional spectral-shearing interferogram has been acquired instantaneously by frequency- and time-resolved sum-frequency conversion where the phase-matching angle and transverse-delay of crossed-pump beams in a nonlinear crystal serve as frequency-time decomposed imaging. The two spectrally sheared components travel the same path after upconversion. A picoseconds delay-scanned interferogram is accumulated on a 2D image sensor.

Characterization of high-intensity sub-4-fs laser pulses using spatially encoded spectral shearing interferometry

We report on the full amplitude and phase characterization of high-intensity few-cycle laser pulses generated in a single-stage hollow core fiber system with subsequent compression by ultrabroadband chirped mirrors. We use a spatially-encoded arrangement (SEA) spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER) with spectral filters for ancilla generation to characterize the sub-4 fs pulses with spatial resolution.

Ultrashort pulse characterization in the mid-infrared

We describe a second-harmonic-generation frequency-resolved optical gating measurement device optimized for the characterization of few-cycle pulses in the mid-IR spectral range. The system has a temporal range of 100 ps with resolution of 0.12 fs, and it is capable of measuring pulses as short as 1.5 cycles (15 fs) at 3 microm. Through interchangeable beam splitters and detectors it covers a wavelength range from 800 nm to 5 microm with up to 0.5 cm(-1) resolution. We demonstrate measurement of a richly featured 3.2 microm pulse with 9.6 cycle duration, recovering the main pulse of 96 fs, as well as low-intensity post-pulses with picosecond offset. We also characterize a 100 fs pulse after dispersion through a 1 cm sapphire plate, comparing the measured phase difference with the calculated one.

Near quantum-limited, single-shot coherent arbitrary optical waveform measurements

Four-quadrature spectral interferometry using balanced coherent detection enables single-shot full-field characterization of complex-shaped optical waveforms with near quantum-limited sensitivity. A 90 degrees optical hybrid places a waveform in four-quadrature-phases with a stronger, well-characterized reference pulse. Measurement of the four spectra with an integrating two-dimensional detector array followed by balanced detection uniquely determines the signal field. Balanced coherent detection provides common-mode noise rejection and coherent gain enabling near quantum-limited sensitivity. The single-shot waveform was temporally gated from a 100 ps periodic train of arbitrary optical waveforms generated using line-by-line pulse shaping on a 10 GHz optical frequency comb. The measurements show arbitrary waveforms with 200-ps record lengths, 500 GHz optical bandwidths and only 1200 detected photons.

Numerical fringe pattern demodulation strategies in interferometry

The performance of two different numerical frequency demodulation strategies for evaluating sampled fringe patterns in interferometric applications and optics is discussed. Namely, these techniques involve traditional Fourier filtering techniques and a strategy based on the Gabor wavelets. While the latter is found to be more precise, it is generally difficult to implement wavelet-based frequency demodulation with equal performance as methods based on the fast Fourier transform. Here, we demonstrate a specialized fast wavelet algorithm that outperforms Fourier-based strategies for array sizes up to a few thousand data points and is yet more precise. The performance is investigated in numerical examples, indicating that the required choice of a global filter bandwidth is one of the main problems of the Fourier filtering strategy. Wavelet frequency demodulation, in contrast, always appears to perform slightly better, does not require judicious choice of filtering, and can often be made equally fast without loss of precision. Finally, applying this new algorithm to an ideal sinusoidal signal without noise, the precision of the numerical frequency demodulation is increased by nearly two orders of magnitude.

Frequency-sheared, time-delayed extreme-ultraviolet pulses produced by high-harmonic generation in argon

We report the production of frequency-sheared high harmonics in argon by control of the envelope and chirp of the electric field of the femtosecond driving laser pulse. Using the classic three-step model of high-harmonic generation, we established a direct link between the properties of the harmonics and the fully characterized driving pulses. A simulation of the single-atom response in the strong-field approximation confirms the simple picture and shows good agreement with the experimental results.

Self-referencing, spectrally, or spatially encoded spectral interferometry for the complete characterization of attosecond electromagnetic pulses

We propose a method for the complete characterization of attosecond duration electromagnetic pulses produced by high harmonic generation in an atomic gas. Our method is based on self-referencing spectral interferometry of two spectrally sheared extreme ultraviolet pulses, which is achieved by pumping the harmonic source with two sheared optical driving pulses. The resulting interferogram contains sufficient information to completely reconstruct the temporal behavior of the electric field. We demonstrate that such a method is feasible, and outline two possible experimental configurations.

Femtosecond lasers in gas phase chemistry

This critical review is intended to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in femtosecond laser technology and recent applications in ultrafast gas phase chemical dynamics. Although "femtochemistry" is not a new subject, there have been some tremendous advances in experimental techniques during the last few years. Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and ultrafast electron diffraction have enabled us to observe molecular dynamics through a wider window. Attosecond laser sources, which have so far only been exploited in atomic physics, have the potential to probe chemical dynamics on an even faster timescale and observe the motions of electrons. Huge progress in pulse shaping and pulse characterisation methodology is paving the way for exciting new advances in the field of coherent control.

Phase-preserving chirped-pulse optical parametric amplification to 17.3 fs directly from a Ti:sapphire oscillator

Phase-stabilized 12-fs, 1-nJ pulses from a commercial Ti:sapphire oscillator are directly amplified in a chirped-pulse optical parametric amplifier and recompressed to yield near-transform-limited 17.3-fs pulses. The amplification process is demonstrated to be phase preserving and leads to 85-microJ, carrier-envelope-offset phase-locked pulses at 1 kHz for 0.9 mJ of pump, corresponding to a single-pass gain of 8.5 x 10(4).

Observation of carrier-envelope phase phenomena in the multi-optical-cycle regime

So far the role of the carrier-envelope phase of a light pulse has been clearly experimentally evidenced only in the sub-6-fs temporal regime. Here we show, both experimentally and theoretically, the influence of the carrier-envelope phase of a multi-optical-cycle light pulse on high-order harmonic generation. For the first time, we demonstrate that the short and long electron quantum paths contributing to harmonic generation are influenced in a different way by the pulse carrier-envelope phase.

Measuring ultrashort optical pulses in the presence of noise: an empirical study of the performance of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction

We have measured the performance of a real spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER) apparatus operating under suboptimal conditions. We analyzed the errors in SPIDER's measurements of the temporal phases and intensities of 50-fs ultrashort laser pulses as a function of the additive noise in the detected signal. It was found that SPIDER performs exceptionally well, particularly in the case of additive noise. Specifically, a signal with 10% noise yields a pulse that has a mere 2% error in its intensity profile and a phase that differs from the nominal value by 0.2 rad. Furthermore, we quantified SPIDER's performance with limited detector resolution and as a function of signal averaging.

Generation of 14.8-fs pulses in a spatially dispersed amplifier

We demonstrate amplification and compression of 110-nm broad spectra in a spatially dispersed amplifier for what is believed to be the first time and generate 14.8-fs pulses with 450 microJ of energy at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. The amplifier concept is scalable in energy and allows for spectral shaping, which was demonstrated and compared with numerical simulations and showed excellent agreement.

Effects of carrier-envelope phase differences of few-optical-cycle light pulses in single-shot high-order-harmonic spectra

For the first time single-shot harmonic spectra generated by few-optical-cycle pulses have been measured. Clear carrier-envelope phase effects have been observed in the cutoff harmonic spectral structure. Results have been interpreted in terms of the nonadiabatic single-atom response of the nonlinear medium excited by few-optical-cycle pulses.

Implementation of electro-optic spectral shearing interferometry for ultrashort pulse characterization

Electro-optic spectral shearing interferometry is implemented for the highly sensitive characterization of ultrashort pulses from a free-running source. A simple phase-locked-loop clock recovery circuit is used to extract the high-frequency microwave clock signal to drive the phase modulator for spectral shearing. We demonstrate accurate full temporal characterization of 200-fs pulses from an optical parametric oscillator at 5-pW average power.

Generation of 3.8-fs pulses from adaptive compression of a cascaded hollow fiber supercontinuum

We demonstrate generation of 3.8-fs pulses with energies of up to 15 microJ from a supercontinuum produced in two cascaded hollow fibers. Ultrabroadband dispersion compensation was achieved through a closed-loop combination of a spatial light modulator for adaptive pulse compression and spectral-phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction (SPIDER) measurements as feedback signal.
