Fiber Optic Sensing Technology and Vision Sensing Technology for Structural Health Monitoring

Structural health monitoring is currently a crucial measure for the analysis of structural safety. As a structural asset management approach, it can provide a cost-effective measure and has been used successfully in a variety of structures. In recent years, the development of fiber optic sensing technology and vision sensing technology has led to further advances in structural health monitoring. This paper focuses on the basic principles, recent advances, and current status of applications of these two sensing technologies. It provides the reader with a broad review of the literature. It introduces the advantages, limitations, and future directions of these two sensing technologies. In addition, the main contribution of this paper is that the integration of fiber optic sensing technology and vision sensing technology is discussed. This paper demonstrates the feasibility and application potential of this integration by citing numerous examples. The conclusions show that this new integrated sensing technology can effectively utilize the advantages of both fields.

Tapered-open-cavity-based in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer for highly sensitive axial-strain measurement

An in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on a multimode-fiber-assisted tapered open-cavity (TOC) is proposed. Light field distributions of the TOC were investigated using beam propagation method with different offsets and diameters of the taper waist. Bias and uniform taper (BT and UT)-based structures were fabricated and compared using one- and two-step arc-discharge methods, and comprehensive tests were then conducted considering axial-strain. The experimental results show that the UT structure has more than -45 pm/µɛ linear wavelength shift with the applied axial-strain. Owing to its compact size and low cost, the proposed sensor is promising for axial-strain-related high-precision engineering applications.

Highly Sensitive Dual Parameter Sensor Based on a Hybrid Structure with Multimode Interferometer and Fiber Bragg Grating Fabricated by Femtosecond Laser

A hybrid sensing configuration for simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) written in an offset multimode fiber (MMF) interferometer using femtosecond laser pulse is proposed and demonstrated. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer is formed by splicing a section of MMF between two single-mode fibers (SMFs) and a high interference fringe of up to 15 dB is achieved. The sensing experimental results show a strain sensitivity of -1.17 pm/με and 0.6498 pm/με for the dip of MZI and Bragg peak, while a temperature sensitivity of 42.84 pm/°C and 19.96 pm/°C is measured. Furthermore, the matrix analysis has found that the strain and temperature resolution of the sensor are as high as ±12.36 με and ±0.35 °C, respectively. In addition, the sensor has merits of simple fabrication, good spectral quality, and high resolution, which shows attractive potential applications in dual-parameter sensing.

Recent Progress of Fiber-Optic Sensors for the Structural Health Monitoring of Civil Infrastructure

In recent years, with the development of materials science and architectural art, ensuring the safety of modern buildings is the top priority while they are developing toward higher, lighter, and more unique trends. Structural health monitoring (SHM) is currently an extremely effective and vital safeguard measure. Because of the fiber-optic sensor's (FOS) inherent distinctive advantages (such as small size, lightweight, immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and corrosion, and embedding capability), a significant number of innovative sensing systems have been exploited in the civil engineering for SHM used in projects (including buildings, bridges, tunnels, etc.). The purpose of this review article is devoted to presenting a summary of the basic principles of various fiber-optic sensors, classification and principles of FOS, typical and functional fiber-optic sensors (FOSs), and the practical application status of the FOS technology in SHM of civil infrastructure.

Combined compression-tension strain sensor over 1 µε-20 mε by using non-uniform multiple-core-offset fiber

Combined compression-tension strain sensors with a range of 1 micro to a maximum of 20 milli-strain based on non-uniform multiple-core-offset fibers have been realized. A large strain range with high resolution is ideal for monitoring deformation of steel structures where a large compressive and tensile strain co-exists. Thanks to core-offset splicing of non-uniform fiber segments, unique asymmetric waveguides reduce the degeneracy of each section, realizing a reflection spectrum with a large range and irregular shape. Furthermore, enhanced multi-mode interference induced from high-order modes in silica cladding and air results in the large strain range with high resolution in both compression and tension regions. The sensitivity of 7.93 pm/µε with a strain step of 1.7 µε is achieved for micro-strain measurement. For milli-strain measurement, a strain coefficient of 1.298 nm/mε over a tensile strain of 13.2 mε is realized; in the compressive strain case, a coefficient of -1.251nm/mε over compression of 20.1 mε is observed.

Carbon Allotrope-Based Optical Fibers for Environmental and Biological Sensing: A Review

Recently, carbon allotropes have received tremendous research interest and paved a new avenue for optical fiber sensing technology. Carbon allotropes exhibit unique sensing properties such as large surface to volume ratios, biocompatibility, and they can serve as molecule enrichers. Meanwhile, optical fibers possess a high degree of surface modification versatility that enables the incorporation of carbon allotropes as the functional coating for a wide range of detection tasks. Moreover, the combination of carbon allotropes and optical fibers also yields high sensitivity and specificity to monitor target molecules in the vicinity of the nanocoating surface. In this review, the development of carbon allotropes-based optical fiber sensors is studied. The first section provides an overview of four different types of carbon allotropes, including carbon nanotubes, carbon dots, graphene, and nanodiamonds. The second section discusses the synthesis approaches used to prepare these carbon allotropes, followed by some deposition techniques to functionalize the surface of the optical fiber, and the associated sensing mechanisms. Numerous applications that have benefitted from carbon allotrope-based optical fiber sensors such as temperature, strain, volatile organic compounds and biosensing applications are reviewed and summarized. Finally, a concluding section highlighting the technological deficiencies, challenges, and suggestions to overcome them is presented.

Graphene oxide-functionalized long period fiber grating for ultrafast label-free glucose biosensor

A label-free glucose biosensor is constructed successfully based on the long period fiber grating (LPFG) functionalized with graphene oxide (GO)-glucose oxidase (GOD) via the chemical crosslink method. GO coated on the surface of LPFG can immobilize GOD by the plentiful binding sites because of its favorable combination of exceptionally high surface-to-volume ratio. The structure and characterization of GOD-GO-modified LPFG are studied by the optical microscope, Fourier transformation infrared spectrometer (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The reaction between GOD and glucose create gluconic acid and H₂O₂, which will lead to an evident shift of LPFG transmission spectrum due to the greater change of the surrounding refractive index (SRI). The GOD-GO-modified LPFG sensor shows a linear response with a response coefficient of 0.77 nm/(mg/mL). This biosensor has good selectivity and can be used for the detection of practical sample. The GOD-GO-modified LPFG biosensor has great prospect in the pharmaceutical research and medical diagnosis fields.

Temperature sensor based on multi-layer MoS2 coated etched fiber Bragg grating

The development of an etched fiber Bragg grating (eFBG)-based temperature sensor with a uniform multi-layer molybdenum-di-sulphide (MoS₂) coating is presented in this paper. Multi-layer MoS₂ has been coated on clad etched FBG sensors by DC magnetron sputtering of molybdenum (Mo) and subsequent sulfurization. The dependence of temperature sensitivity on the coating thickness of MoS₂ on eFBGs has been tested from room temperature to 100°C. It has been found that MoS₂ coated clad etched FBG sensors with a coating thickness of around 10 nm exhibit a maximum temperature sensitivity of ∼95  pm/°C (almost one order higher than that of bare fiber Bragg gratings), with a resolution of ∼0.01°C obtained using an FBG interrogator with 1 pm resolution.

Narrowband silicon waveguide Bragg reflector achieved by highly ordered graphene oxide gratings

Graphene oxide (GO) ultrathin film can be wafer-scale deposited by spin coating, can be patterned by laser interference lithography and oxygen plasma etching, can be thinned atomically (0.26 nm/min) and oxidized by ozone treatment, and is a relatively transparent and low-refractive-index material compared to pristine graphene. All those unique properties prompt us to realize a low-loss (∼5  dB/cm), high-extinction-ratio (19 dB), and narrowband (0.425 nm) GO/silicon hybrid waveguide Bragg reflector by transferring 7-nm-thick GO gratings (n=1.58) atop a silicon strip waveguide. Unlike a sidewall-corrugated strip waveguide Bragg reflector that generally exhibits distorted corrugation profiles and is sensitive to fabrication errors, the as-realized GO-grating-covered strip waveguide Bragg reflector exhibits a stable reflecting wavelength and controllable reflection bandwidth that can be well predicted by numerical simulations.

Fiber Bragg grating interrogation using wavelength modulated tunable distributed feedback lasers and a fiber-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer

This paper demonstrates a technique of high-resolution interrogation of two fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with flat-topped reflection spectra centered on 1649.55 nm and 1530.182 nm with narrow line width tunable semiconductor lasers emitting at 1651.93 nm and 1531.52 nm, respectively. The spectral shift of the reflection spectrum in response to temperature and strain is accurately measured with a fiber-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer that has a free spectral range of 0.0523 GHz and a broadband photodetector. Laser wavelength modulation and harmonic detection techniques are used to transform the gentle edges of the flat-topped FBG into prominent leading and trailing peaks that are up to five times narrower than the FBG spectrum. Either of these peaks can be used to accurately measure spectral shifts of the FBG reflection spectrum with a resolution down to a value of 0.47 pm. A digital signal processing board is used to measure the temperature-induced spectral shifts over the range of 30°C-80°C and strain-induced spectral shifts from 0  μϵ to 12,000  μϵ. The shift is linear in both cases with a temperature sensitivity of 12.8 pm/°C and strain sensitivity of 0.12  pm/μϵ. The distinctive feature of this technique is that it does not use an optical spectrum analyzer at any stage of its design or operation. It can be readily extended to all types of tunable diode lasers and is ideally suited for compact field instruments and for biomedical applications in stroke rehabilitation monitoring.

Optical Fibre Sensors Using Graphene-Based Materials: A Review

Graphene and its derivatives have become the most explored materials since Novoselov and Geim (Nobel Prize winners for Physics in 2010) achieved its isolation in 2004. The exceptional properties of graphene have attracted the attention of the scientific community from different research fields, generating high impact not only in scientific journals, but also in general-interest newspapers. Optical fibre sensing is one of the many fields that can benefit from the use of these new materials, combining the amazing morphological, chemical, optical and electrical features of graphene with the advantages that optical fibre offers over other sensing strategies. In this document, a review of the current state of the art for optical fibre sensors based on graphene materials is presented.
