Eco-stoichiometric alterations in paddy soil ecosystem driven by phosphorus application

Short-term soil drying-rewetting effects on respiration rate and microbial biomass carbon and phosphorus in a 60-year paddy soil

Paddy soils represent the largest anthropogenic wetlands on earth. Soil drying and rewetting that occurs annually inflict significant stress on soil microbial activities in paddy soils. An incubation experiment of 60 years of paddy soil was conducted to simulate the conditions of paddy fields (25 °C and 75% air humidity) during a 16-day incubation time. The effect of drying-rewetting [DRW, with 4 levels: (1) constant soil moisture (CSM), (2) one-stage drought stress (DRW1), (3) two-stage drought stress (DRW2), and (4) three-stage drought stress (DRW3)] and how it evolves over 0, 4, 8. 12, and 16 days after incubation on the concentration of available phosphorus (AP), microbial biomass P (MBP) and microbial biomass C (MBC), and respiration rate (RES) was determined using repeated measures analysis (RMA). The results revealed that an increase in the number of drying-rewetting increases MBC and RES. Compared to CSM, frequent drying and rewetting caused an increase in RES, MBC and MBP by 88%, 38%, and 11%, respectively. Drying-rewetting increased microbial biomass C (MBC) and P (MBP) by 24-38% and 11-54%, respectively, during 8-16 days of incubation. Increasing the number of DRW cycles reduced AP concentration (except in DRW1). The decrease in available phosphorus is due to the increase in the intensity of immobilization under these conditions. Positive correlations were also observed between AP and MBP (r = 0.52), and between RES and MBC (r = 0.91). In general, the frequency of moisture in the paddy soil is favorable for increasing microbial activity.

Variations in eco-enzymatic stoichiometric and microbial characteristics in paddy soil as affected by long-term integrated organic-inorganic fertilization

To investigate the effects of different nutrient management regimes on the soil chemical, eco-enzymatic stoichiometric and microbial characteristics, soil samples were collected from a 30-year, long-term field experiment with six plots growing rice. The results showed that as integrated fertilization increased, so did the concentrations of soil total or available nutrients and microbial biomass carbon (MBC). Our results also found enhanced soil basal respiration and cumulative carbon mineralization compared to chemical fertilization alone at the same nutrient doses. The activities of soil protease (Pro), β-glucosidase (βG), N-acetyl-glucosaminidase (NAG) and acid phosphatase (AP) from the integrated fertilization treatments were significantly higher than those of the treatments without organic manure, so did the activities of soil leucyl aminopeptidase (LAP) and urease (Ure) from the treatment with organic manure in addition to farmer practise fertilization (NPKM2). The stoichiometric ratios, expressed as lnβG/ln(NAG+LAP)/lnPro/lnUre/lnAP, ranged from 1:0.94:1.04:0.67:1.01 to 1:0.98:1.10:0.78:1.25, indicating that the acquisition of C, N and P changed consistently and synchronously under different nutrient management strategies. Integrated fertilization was more beneficial to the acquisition and utilization of soil organic carbon compared to low-molecular-weight organic nitrogen. We concluded that protease and urease should be considered in eco-enzymatic stoichiometric assessments for the hydrolysis of proteins, amino acids, carbohydrates and phosphomonoesters in soil, and integrated fertilization with chemical fertilizers and organic manure should be recommended as a preferable nutrient management system for intensive rice cultivation.

Microbial extracellular enzymes in biogeochemical cycling of ecosystems

Extracellular enzymes, primarily produced by microorganisms, affect ecosystem processes because of their essential roles in degradation, transformation and mineralization of organic matter. Extracellular enzymes involved in the cycling of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) have been widely investigated in many different ecosystems, and several enzymes have been recognized as key components in regulating C storage and nutrient cycling. In this review, it was the first time to summarize the specific extracellular enzymes related to C storage and nutrient cycling for better understanding the important role of microbial extracellular enzymes in biogeochemical cycling of ecosystems. Subsequently, ecoenzymatic stoichiometry - the relative ratio of extracellular enzyme, has been reviewed and further provided a new perspective for understanding biogeochemical cycling of ecosystems. Finally, the new insights of using microbial extracellular enzyme in indicating biogeochemical cycling and then protecting ecosystems have been suggested.
