Facile synthesis of light harvesting semiconductor bismuth oxychloride nano photo-catalysts for efficient removal of hazardous organic pollutants

Construction of a direct Z-scheme Cs3Bi2Cl9/g-C3N4 heterojunction composite for efficient photocatalytic degradation of various pollutants in water: Performance, kinetics and degradation mechanism

The use of emerging composite materials has been booming to remove environmental pollutants. The aim of this research is to develop a new composite based on Cs3Bi2Cl9 perovskite and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) to investigate the photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation. To achieve this, we produce the Cs3Bi2Cl9/g-C3N4 heterojunctions through a simple self-assembly synthesis. The as-synthesized composites are characterized using XRD, FTIR, FESEM, TEM, BET and EDX techniques. The photocatalytic performance of Cs3Bi2Cl9/g-C3N4 is examined in the degradation of various water contaminants, including 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), tetracycline antibiotic (TC), methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO). The experimental results indicate the superior photocatalytic performance of the composites in the degradation of pollutants compared to pure Cs3Bi2Cl9 and g-C3N4. The 10% Cs3Bi2Cl9/g-C3N4 composite achieves the optimal degradation efficiency of 100, 92, 98.7, and 85.1% of 4-NP, TC, MB, and MO, respectively. This superior photocatalytic activity attributes to improved optical and electrochemical properties, including enhanced absorption ability, narrowing band gap, promoted separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, and a high redox potential, which is confirmed by UV-vis DRS, PL, EIS, and CV analyses. The 10% Cs3Bi2Cl9/g-C3N4 composite also demonstrates high photocatalytic stability after four consecutive cycles. Radical trapping tests show that superoxide radicals (•O2-), holes (h+), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) contribute to the photocatalytic process. Based on the obtained data, a direct Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism is proposed. Overall, this research offers a new stable photocatalyst with excellent prospect for photocatalytic applications.

Highly efficient solar light-driven BiOX (X=Br/Cl/I) and BiOY heterojunction (Y=Br/Cl) nano photocatalysts in suspended and immobilised forms for malachite green dye wastewater treatment

A novel BiOY (Y = Br/Cl) heterojunction nanocatalyst was synthesised chemically and compared with three different BiOX (X = Br/Cl/I) nanocatalysts as well as a physical admixture of BiOBr/BiOCl catalysts in the photocatalytic degradation of malachite green dye wastewater under solar irradiation in both suspended and immobilised forms using polysulfone as the substrate. Catalyst characterisation was done by a particle size analyser, SEM/EDX, XRD, FTIR, and DRS. In the suspended form, BiOBr showed 100% degradation within 70 min, BiOCl showed 99.3%, and BiOI showed 11.2% degradation within 120 min, and it is found to follow pseudo-first-order kinetics. In the immobilised form, BiOBr showed 89.1%, and BiOCl showed 83.4% degradation within 180 min under sunlight. The degradation measured by TOC reduction for these catalysts in suspended form was 67.4%, 57%, and 40%, affirming BiOBr as the best among these catalysts. The performance of the immobilised chemically synthesised BiOY and physical admixture catalysts were 88% and 14%, respectively. The enhanced activity in the chemically synthesised immobilised BiOBr/Cl catalyst can be attributed to the effective charge separation at the heterojunction interface. These photocatalysts are very active under solar light and hence suitable for the efficient degradation of other recalcitrant organic contaminants.

Layered KTO/BiOCl nanostructures for the efficient visible light photocatalytic degradation of harmful dyes

Novel KTO/BiOCl nanostructured photocatalysts with various weight proportions were synthesized using a simple hydrothermal process. The as-prepared nanostructured composite catalysts were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis diffused reflectance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy with high resolution, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL). The photocatalytic activity of prepared catalysts was examined using Rhodamine B (RhB) and Congo Red (CR) as the aimed pollutants. BiOCl nanoparticles were distributed uniformly on the surface of the K₂Ti₄O₉ nanobelts. The optical properties showed that the layered titanate with BiOCl nanostructured photocatalyst displayed improved photoresponsivity due to the narrowed bandgap. The PL results showed that the greater inhibition of the electron-hole recombination process and KTO/BiOCl with a mass proportion of 20% revealed the most favorable photocatalytic behavior. The rate constant of RhB and CR degradation was five times as high as that of the bare BiOCl and titanate. The superior photocatalytic performance was attributed to the advancement of heterojunction between the KTO nanobelt and BiOCl. The KTO/BiOCl nanostructure is a promising visible, active photocatalyst, and the photocatalytic mechanism is discussed using the possible band structures of BiOCl and KTO.

Photo-degradation of sugar processing wastewater by copper doped bismuth oxyiodide: Assessment of treatment performance and kinetic studies

In this study, photo-Fenton-like oxidation method was evaluated for synthetic sugar industry wastewater using visible-light driven Cu-BiOI photocatalyst. Reaction conditions including initial pH, catalyst loading, initial hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) concentration, and temperature, were optimized. At these optimized conditions, the total saccharide concentration (TSC) and total organic carbon (TOC) removals were 56.20% and 30.67%, respectively whereas the maximum TSC and TOC removal reached up to 93.35% and 74.72% respectively by decreasing initial sucrose concentration. The kinetic study showed that the reaction order for sucrose and TOC oxidation was determined as 2 for pseudo-homogeneous power law models with respect to sucrose concentration and TOC, respectively.For heterogeneous models, Langmuir-Hinshelwood model based on the mechanism of adsorbed pollutant and oxidant on different catalytic sites was the best fit for oxidation of sucrose and other organic intermediates. According to the catalyst characterization studies, incorporation of copper was successful and Cu-BiOI possesses high photocatalytic activity accomplished by acid-assisted synthesis method.

Enhanced disinfection of E. faecalis and levofloxacin antibiotic degradation using tridoped B-Ce-Ag TiO2 photocatalysts synthesized by ecofriendly citrate EDTA complexing method

Since its use for photochemical water splitting reported first in 1972, TiO₂ is one of the most extensively studied photocatalysts for a diverse range of applications. Monodoping or codoping of the catalyst is a proven strategy to enhance the functionality of TiO₂ under solar or visible light. However, the use of three or more dopants in the development of more efficient and visible light active photocatalysts has not been investigated widely, especially for microbial disinfection. Boron/cerium/silver tridoped TiO₂ photocatalysts with curated amounts of the dopants (B = 1, 2 at.%, Ce = 0.1 at.%, Ag = 0.06 at.%), synthesized by the ecofriendly EDTA-citrate method, were evaluated for the disinfection of water using Enterococcus faecalis under UV-A irradiation and degradation of levofloxacin antibiotic under solar light. The catalyst characterization revealed that the spherical nanoparticles had a crystallite size of ~ 13 nm and bandgap energy values of 2.8-2.9 eV. 2B-0.1Ce-0.06Ag-TiO₂ is the best catalyst for microbial disinfection with a log reduction and kinetic rate constant ~ 30 and ~ 4.5 times higher than those values determined for the other codoped or monodoped catalysts, confirming an enhanced performance. Regarding levofloxacin degradation, the best performing catalyst is 1B-0.1Ce-0.06Ag-TiO₂ with degradation of 99% and 83% COD reduction in 100 min. The tridoped photocatalysts are very effective in the inactivation of Enterococcus faecalis, thus solving the problem of antimicrobial resistance in waters containing antibiotic residues.

Novel bismuth oxy hydride chromate (HBi3(CrO4)O3) nano-sheets/rods synthesized by one step one pot wet chemical method

A novel inorganic hydride material, hydrogen bismuth chromium oxide (HBi3(CrO4)O3), with 2D nano sheets and 1D nanorods were prepared for the first time using a simple, green, hazard free hydrothermal method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results confirms that the as-formed sample (HBi3(CrO4)O3) has monoclinic crystal system with a space group of P21/a. The field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) analysis clearly reveal that the new material contains large quantity of 2D nanosheets of thickness <10 nm and spread over >1000 nm and with small amounts of micro-rods of width in the range of 1 to 5 μm and lengths in the range of 40 to 100 μm. The EDS analysis confirms the presence of ‘Bi’, ‘Cr’, and ‘O’ and it further evidences the purity of the sample. The fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) spectra evidences that the sample has Bi-H, Bi-O and Cr-O bonds as expected for HBi3(CrO4)O3. This material has a potential to find its place in hydrogen storage material, photo/electro catalysis, fuel cells, optoelectronics and rechargeable batteries, therefore it needs materials researcher attention immediately.

Towards visible-light photocatalysis for environmental applications: band-gap engineering versus photons absorption-a review

A range of different studies has been performed in order to design and develop photocatalysts that work efficiently under visible (and near-infrared) irradiation as well as to improve photons absorption with improved reactor design. While there is consensus on the importance of photocatalysis for environmental applications and the necessity to utilized solar irradiation (or visible-light) as driving force for these processes, it is not yet clear how to get there. Discussion on the future steps towards visible-light photocatalysis for environmental application is of great interest to scientific and industrial communities and the present paper reviews and discusses the two main approaches, band-gap engineering for efficient solar-activated catalysts and reactor designs for improved photons absorption. Common misconceptions and drawbacks of each technology are also examined together with insights for future progress.
