Rich table but short life: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis in Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) and its possible consequences

Five case studies are reported on the use of neutron and photon activation analysis (NAA and PAA, respectively), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, ion beam analysis (IBA), and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) for the elemental characterization or dating of various objects of cultural heritage, such as building materials, pottery, metallic artefacts, ancient decorations, or the remains of historical personalities. The use of the individual techniques or their combination proved a useful, frequently indispensable tool for revealing the provenance of the artefacts, the method and time of their manufacturing, the elucidation of ancient human activities, or the verification of various hypotheses or legends related to the artefacts.

Historical bioarcheological aspects of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis in humans

OBJECTIVE

To identify diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) in the human bioarcheological record to seek out temporal, geographic and dietary information to enhance better understanding of this common condition.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A review of available literature was conducted.

RESULTS

DISH has been identified in hominin populations over millions of years, including several different human species. The distribution of DISH in ancient populations is diverse, both temporally and geographically. Where available, dietary intake of subjects with DISH, in contrast to those without DISH, suggests that metabolic factors associate with DISH.

CONCLUSION

DISH is a ubiquitous human disorder over the ages. Metabolic factors appear important in ancient populations of those with DISH.

The Importance of Historical Medical Records Review in the Interpretation of Dry Bone Lesions on Identified Skeletal Remains: A Case Study of a Polymorbid Male (1895-1940)

ABSTRACT

The examination of documented skeletal remains provides an exceptional opportunity for biohistorical research to answer questions about an individual's life and death. Research in this area also makes it possible to assess the reliability of historical records from the period of interest, which is often the subject of discussion, especially in cases of historically known individuals. The remains of K.B.C. (1895-1940), a prominent local landowner and politician, were exhumed because of the repair of a family tomb in Jíloviště, Czech Republic. The aim of this study was to analyze pathological changes in his bones and to interpret these by comparing them with the results of a historical medical records review of private family and public archives regarding his diseases and death, thus verifying their credibility. Morphological and X-ray examinations of the bones revealed several serious pathological changes, whose presence fully corresponded to the studied documents. This showed the records' reliability, and it was thus possible to accurately interpret the lesions found. The results demonstrated the need for interdisciplinary collaboration in the analysis of such cases, including the assistance of the living descendants of the studied individuals, if possible.

Sensationalism and speaking to the public: Scientific rigour and interdisciplinary collaborations in palaeopathology

OBJECTIVES

In this brief communication we discuss issues concerning scientific rigour in palaeopathological publications, particularly studies published in clinical or general science journals, that employ skeletal analysis to elucidate the lives and deaths of historical figures or interpret "mysterious" assemblages or burials. We highlight the relationship between poor methodological rigour and lack of interdisciplinary communication, and discuss how this can result in scientifically weak, sensational narratives being presented to the public.

CONCLUSIONS

Although most high profile publications involving analysis of archaeological human remains are methodologically sound and well interpreted, others have suffered from poor scientific rigour stemming from an apparent lack of awareness of anthropological methods and ethics. When these publications are highlighted by the press, sensationalistic narratives are perpetuated which may reflect poorly on our discipline and give the public unrealistic expectations about our work.

SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH

We suggest that best practice in high-profile paleopathological research include recruitment of a range of authors and reviewers from clinical sciences, anthropology, and the humanities, consideration of the ethical issues surrounding retrospective diagnosis, and transparency with the press in regards to the limitations inherent in this kind of work.
