Abstract
BACKGROUND Haemorrhage is a significant cause of death in trauma patients. There is evidence that individuals with blood group O have higher rates of non-traumatic haemorrhage. It has been suggested that blood group O may be associated with higher mortality in trauma, however existing evidence is limited and conflicting. OBJECTIVE A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the impact of ABO blood group on mortality in trauma patients. METHODS MEDLINE via OVID, the Cochrane library and grey literature were searched to identify studies investigating the effect of ABO blood group on mortality of trauma patients admitted to hospital. PRISMA guidelines were followed throughout, study quality was assessed using CASP checklists and certainty of evidence was evaluated using GRADE. Meta-analysis was precluded by significant study heterogeneity. RESULTS 180 relevant records were screened and seven studies met inclusion criteria, representing 12,240 patients. Two studies found that there was a higher mortality in blood group O compared to other ABO groups. Included studies had substantial variability in methods and population. Study quality was variable with certainty of evidence rated as very low. CONCLUSIONS There is insufficient evidence to definitively establish an association between mortality and ABO group in trauma patients. In an age of increasingly individualised care, there is a need to determine the existence and cause for any association through further studies across multiple settings, trauma mechanisms and populations.

Abstract
Chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) is a common disease in the neurological and neurosurgical world. The recommended treatment for cSDH patients with moderate or severe neurological symptoms is surgical evacuation, but cSDH frequently recurs. The patient’s ABO blood type may influence the outcome. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between cSDH recurrence and blood type O. We performed a retrospective analysis of the data of patients with cSDH who were surgically treated. Recurrence was defined as the need for re-operation within the first 12 weeks after the initial surgery. We analyzed standard demographic data, duration and type of surgery, ABO blood types, and the re-operation rate. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. A total of 229 patients were included. The recurrence of hematoma was identified in 20.5% of patients. Blood type O was found to be significantly associated with cSDH recurrence leading to re-operation within 12 weeks (p = 0.02, OR 1.9, 95% CI 1.1–3.5). Thrombocyte aggregation inhibition and oral anticoagulants were not predictors of cSDH recurrence. Patients with blood type O in our cohort were identified to be at higher risk of cSDH recurrence and may, therefore, be a more vulnerable patient group. This finding needs further evaluation in larger cohorts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recent studies have suggested an impact of the ABO-blood group type on thromboembolic and haemorrhagic events following trauma and surgical procedures. However, only limited data are available on the impact of ABO-blood group types in neurosurgical patients. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the role of the ABO-blood group type on the frequency of thromboembolic and haemorrhagic complications in patients treated surgically for intracranial meningiomas at our institution. METHODS We retrospectively analysed the medical records of consecutive patients undergoing resection of intracranial meningiomas at our institution during a period of 12.5 years (2006-2018). Clinical characteristics, modalities of surgical treatment, histopathological results and the postoperative course of patients were analysed with specific focus on ABO-blood group typing results, need for transfusion of blood products, events of postoperative thromboembolism and intracranial re-haemorrhage requiring surgical revision, as well as in-hospital mortality. RESULTS A total of 1,782 patients were included in this study. Based on the ABO-blood group type, patients were subdivided into four categories, corresponding to their ABO-blood group: Blood group A (n = 773; 43%); blood group B (n = 222; 12%); blood group AB (n = 88; 5%); and blood group O (n = 699; 39%). Intracranial re-haemorrhage requiring re-craniotomy and haematoma evacuation occurred in a total of 49 patients (2.7%). Thromboembolic events such as pulmonary embolism occurred in a total of 27 patients (1.5%). Statistical analysis showed no significant differences regarding the ABO-blood group type in patients suffering from re-haemorrhage or thromboembolism compared with patients with uneventful course after surgery. The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 0.17% (n = 3). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest a lack of relevance of the ABO-blood group type regarding haemorrhagic and thromboembolic complications in patients undergoing neurosurgical meningioma resection.

Abstract
Background: Reduced temporal muscle thickness (TMT) was verified as an independent negative prognostic parameter for outcome in brain tumor patients. Independent thereof, chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a neurosurgical condition with high recurrence rates and unreliable risk models for poor outcome. Since sarcopenia was associated with poor outcome, we investigated the possible role of TMT and the clinical course of CSDH patients. Methods: This investigation is a single-center retrospective study on patients with CSDH. We analyzed the radiological and clinical data sets of 171 patients with surgically treated CSDH at a University Hospital from 2017 to 2020. Results: Our analysis showed a significant association between low-volume TMT and increased hematoma volume (p < 0.001), poor outcome at discharge (p < 0.001), and reduced performance status at 3 months (p < 0.002). Conclusion: TMT may represent an objective prognostic parameter and assist the identification of vulnerable CSDH patients.

Abstract
Objective A previous study with a limited number of patients has shown that blood type A was a risk factor in the recurrence of CSDH. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the association between the recurrence of CSDH and ABO blood type based on a larger sample size. Methods The authors reviewed in-patients with symptomatic CSDH from August 2011 to August 2021. Hospitalization information and data on long-term outcomes and recurrence among these patients were gathered. For all clinical variables, numbers (percentages) and mean ± standard deviations were used for categorical and continuous variables, respectively. For intergroup comparisons, the χ2 test or one-way ANOVA was carried out. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the association between CSDH recurrence and blood types. Results We included 1,556 inpatients in this study. The recurrence rate of CSDH showed no differences among different blood types. In the multivariable logistic regression analyses, ABO blood type (A: OR, 1.064; 95% CI, 0.467-2.851, p = 0.793; B: OR, 0.682, 95% CI, 0.315-1.269, p = 0.164; AB: OR, 0.537, 95% CI, 0.426-1.861, p = 0.357) was not a significantly independent predictor of CSDH recurrence. Conclusions Our study demonstrated that ABO blood type was not a risk factor in the recurrence of CSDH. Thus, we should not pay too much attention to ABO blood type in terms of CSDH recurrence.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the distribution and impact of ABO blood group on the baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes of patients presenting with aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH). METHODS Retrospective, single-centre study of patients admitted to a neurosurgical department in the UK, with a diagnosis of spontaneous subarachnoid haemorrhage between May 2014 and January 2020. Patients were categorised by ABO blood type and by Rhesus status. Clinical outcomes such as initial bleeding, rebleeding, delayed cerebral ischaemia (DIND) and venous thromboembolism were analysed in relation to the size of their association with ABO blood type. Hospital mortality rate, Glasgow Outcome Score (GOS) - at discharge and 3 months post-ictus, requirement for ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion, discharge destination and inpatient length of stay were also considered. RESULTS Four-hundred twelve adult patients admitted with aSAH were included in our analysis. The distribution of ABO group or Rhesus status in our cohort did not differ significantly from the general population in the UK. Blood group A patients had a significantly increased risk of developing DIND, compared with non-blood group A patients (OR, 1.88 [95% CI: 1.10-3.21]). CONCLUSIONS ABO blood type appears to influence aSAH sequelae. Blood group A patients are at highest risk of DIND following aSAH.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a reliable biomarker in the acute phase of traumatic brain injury. However, the relationship between BNP and traumatic acute subdural hematoma (aSDH) has not yet been addressed. This study aimed to analyze BNP levels on admission in surgically treated patients and assess their relationship with early postoperative seizures (EPS) and functional outcomes. METHODS Patients with unilateral traumatic aSDH who were surgically treated in our department between July 2017 and May 2020 were included in the study. BNP was preoperatively measured. Patients' neurologic condition, radiographic variables on initial cranial computed tomography, sodium serum levels on admission, and occurrence of EPS were prospectively assessed. Functional outcome was assessed using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at discharge and follow-up (at 2-3 months). A poor outcome was defined by a mRS score > 3. RESULTS EPS occurred in 20 (19.6%) of 102 surgically treated patients in the final cohort on the median day 3. A significant association between EPS and a poor Glasgow Coma Scale score at the 7th postoperative day was found, which in turn independently predicted a poor functional outcome at discharge and follow-up. Nonetheless, EPS were not associated with poor functional outcomes. The multivariate analysis revealed BNP > 95.4 pg/ml (aOR = 5.7, p = 0.003), sodium < 137.5 mmol/l (aOR = 4.6, p = 0.009), and left-sided aSDH (aOR = 4.4, p = 0.020) as independent predictors of EPS. CONCLUSION In the early postoperative phase of traumatic aSDH, EPS were associated with worse neurologic conditions, which in turn independently predicted poor outcomes at discharge and follow-up. Although several EPS risk factors have already been elucidated, this study presents BNP as a novel reliable predictor of EPS. Further larger studies are needed to determine whether a more precise estimate of EPS risk using BNP levels can be reached.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Because of an aging society, the incidence of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is increasing. This lesion is treated with simple burr hole irrigation, but one of the major issues is that CSDH frequently recurs. ABO blood type may be associated with a bleeding tendency and inflammation. However, its association with the recurrence of CSDH remains unknown. Therefore, the authors of the present study aimed to retrospectively investigate the association between ABO blood type and CSDH recurrence. METHODS The authors retrospectively analyzed symptomatic CSDHs in 425 cerebral hemispheres of 376 patients who had undergone surgical treatment with irrigation of the hematoma via burr holes at their institution from January 2011 to September 2019. Among these were 366 CSDHs in 320 patients whose ABO blood type had been determined and who were included in this study. RESULTS In the study, 307 patients with CSDHs in 350 hemispheres were followed up postoperatively until the disappearance of the CDSH or for at least 3 months. Recurrence of CSDH was observed in 37 patients (10.6%) after surgical treatment. Blood type A was found to be significantly associated with CSDH recurrence compared to non-A blood types: 24 of 153 CDSHs (15.7%) versus 13 of 197 CDSHs (6.6%) (p = 0.008). In the multivariable regression analysis, blood type A, in addition to thrombocytopenia, was a significant independent predictor of the recurrence of CSDH. CONCLUSIONS The study results showed that blood type A is an independent risk factor for the postoperative recurrence of CSDH and that careful follow-up in these patients may be needed.

Abstract
ABO blood groups are associated with genetically predisposed variations in von Willebrand factor (VWF) resulting in higher risks of thrombotic events in non-O blood types and bleeding complications in blood type O. The role of ABO blood groups in progression of traumatic intracranial hemorrhage (TICH) is unknown. Given statistically lower VWF levels in blood type O in the general population, we hypothesized that blood type O patients have a higher risk of such progression. A retrospective review of adult trauma patients with isolated TICH admitted to a Level 1 trauma center over eight years was conducted. Patients were categorized with blood type O and non-O (types A, B, AB) delineation. The primary outcome was radiological progression of TICH during the first 24 h. Secondary outcomes included surgical intervention after follow-up computed tomography (CT), complications, days on mechanical ventilation (DMV), intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (LOS), hospital LOS, and mortality. Of 949 patients, 432 (45.5%) had blood type O. When comparing O and non-O groups, no significant differences were found in gender, age, race, admission vital signs, Glasgow Coma Scale, coagulation profile, TICH type, or Injury Severity Score. No difference in TICH progression was found between O and non-O groups: 73 (17%) vs 80 (15%), respectively, p = 0.55. Blood type O mortality was 12 (3% vs. 23 (4%), p = 0.174). Rate of TICH surgical intervention after follow-up CT, DMV, complications, and ICU and hospital LOS did not differ. No association between ABO blood types and radiological progression of TICH was identified.

Abstract
Personalized medical care focuses on prediction of disease risk and response to medications. To build the risk models, access to both large-scale genomic resources and human genetic studies is required. The Taiwan Biobank (TWB) has generated high-coverage, whole-genome sequencing data from 1492 individuals and genome-wide SNP data from 103,106 individuals of Han Chinese ancestry using custom SNP arrays. Principal components analysis of the genotyping data showed that the full range of Han Chinese genetic variation was found in the cohort. The arrays also include thousands of known functional variants, allowing for simultaneous ascertainment of Mendelian disease-causing mutations and variants that affect drug metabolism. We found that 21.2% of the population are mutation carriers of autosomal recessive diseases, 3.1% have mutations in cancer-predisposing genes, and 87.3% carry variants that affect drug response. We highlight how TWB data provide insight into both population history and disease burden, while showing how widespread genetic testing can be used to improve clinical care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, the role of ABO blood type moved into focus through the discovery of different hemostaseologic properties with importance in many diseases including subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). However, the role of ABO blood type in delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) onset, clinical progress, and outcome after SAH is to date largely unexplored. Our aim was to explore the role of ABO blood group in DCI and clinical outcomes after aneurysmal SAH (aSAH). METHODS A retrospective analysis was made with data collected from patients who presented aSAH at our single- academic center from 2015 to 2018. We included demographic, clinical, and imaging variables in the univariate analysis and in the subsequent multivariate analysis. RESULTS A total of 204 patients were included in this study. About 17.9% of "O" type patients developed a DCI while DCI was reported in only 8.2% of non-O type patients (P = 0.04). "O" type was an independent risk after in the logistic regression after adjusting for significant factors in the univariate analysis (OR=2.530, 95% CI: 1.040- 6.151, P = 0.41). Compared to "non-O" type patients, "O" type patients had a trend to have poorer outcomes at discharge (25.5% vs. 21.3%, P = 0.489) and at 12-18 months (21.1% vs. 19.5%, P = 0.795). However, there were no significant differences. CONCLUSION Our study evidenced that patients with "O" blood type have higher risk of DCI onset after aSAH. Although these findings need to be confirmed, they may aid to improve DCI prevention and outcome predictions.

Abstract
ABO blood group has a profound influence on hemostasis as it is a major determinant of plasma levels of von Willebrand Factor. In vitro studies suggest that blood group O is a risk factor for increased severe bleeding while blood group non-O is a risk factor for thromboembolic events. Yet, the impact of ABO blood group outcome after multiple trauma is unknown. Retrospective multicenter case-control study from three level-1 trauma centers in Germany from 2012-2015. Inclusion criteria were severe trauma with an Injury severity score ≥9 and admission to an intensive care unit. 1281 patients (69.5% male) were included. Mean Injury Severity Score (ISS) was 21.1±12.4; mean age was 50.2±22.4 years. Distribution of blood groups was: O: 37.4%; A: 44%, B: 12.7 and AB: 5.8%. Hospital mortality depending on blood group was 9.7 (A), 10.4 (B), 6.8 (AB) and 12.7 (O) %. Multivariant logistic regression for mortality revealed an Odds ratio of 0.79 (A), 0.60 (B) and 0.54 (AB) without statistical significance (P=0.35 (A), 0.17 (B), 0.33 (AB)). Thromboembolic events (blood group O vs. others) occurred in 2.8 (O) vs. 3.3 (others) %, P=0.619. In this retrospective study on 1281 multiple injured patients, no relevant influence of ABO blood group on hemorrhage, thromboembolic events and mortality could be found.
