Association between migration and physical activity among medical students from a university located in Lima, Peru

Correlation of Physical Activity to Mental Health State and Grade Point Average Among Medical Students in Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study

INTRODUCTION

Physical activity (PA) significantly impacts mental health. However, studies addressing the influence of PA on the mental health and academic performance of medical students are scarce.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A cross-sectional study was carried out among 2,819 students pursuing their medical degrees in Saudi Arabia. PA was measured using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire, and the state of their mental health was recorded using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. A multi-logistic regression was performed to predict the risk factor of poor academic performance.

RESULTS

The prevalence of abnormal anxiety and depression levels were found to be 45.3% and 31.6%, respectively, which were comparatively more prevalent among students of younger age (p < 0.001). Students with abnormal anxiety levels had significantly lower grade point average (GPA) levels than others (p < 0.001). Those who were aged < 21 years, female gender, with chronic disease presence, low PA levels, and abnormal anxiety levels were independently associated with lower GPA levels (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Low PA and high anxiety and depression levels were found to affect the academic performance of medical students in Saudi Arabia. Hence, health education about the importance of PA should be directed to those students.

Quality of life of medical students with migration background: a cross-sectional study from a Peruvian university

The study aimed to describe the association between internal migration status and QoL in medical students from a Peruvian university. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in medical students from a public university in Lima, Peru. We used the brief version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life instrument (WHOQOL-BREF) and obtained data on demographic and migration-related student's characteristics. Linear mixed models were used to assess how migration status affected each of the WHOQOL-BREF domains (physical health, psychological status, social relationships, and environment). Of 410 participants, 110 (27%) and 46 (11%) were 'late' and 'recent' migrants, respectively. Compared with non-migrants, most recent migrants were older (87.0%, p = 0.000), lived alone (32.6%, p = 0.000), had at least one highly educated parent (87.0%, p = 0.002) and reported no chronic conditions (73,9%, p = 0.019). The environment domain scored the lowest and the psychological domain, the highest. Adjusting by all study confounders, migration status was not associated with QoL in any domain. However, adjusting by variables showing a favorable proportion in migrants (parental education and chronic conditions), recent migrants had lower QoL than did non-migrants in the environment domain (b - 4.8, 95% CI -9.2 to -0.5). The results suggest that the parents' higher education level and the absence of chronic conditions could protect migrants' QoL against environmental stressors.

Environmental and Psychosocial Barriers Affect the Active Commuting to University in Chilean Students

Biking and walking are active commuting, which is considered an opportunity to create healthy habits. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the main environmental and psychosocial barriers perceived by students, leading to less Active Commuting (AC) to university and to not reaching the Physical Activity (PA) recommendations. Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 1349 university students (637 men and 712 women) were selected. A self-reported questionnaire was applied to assess the mode of commuting, PA level and barriers to the use of the AC. Results: Women presented higher barriers associated with passive commuting than men. The main barriers for women were “involves too much planning” (OR: 5.25; 95% CI: 3.14–8.78), “It takes too much time” (OR: 4.62; 95% CI: 3.05–6.99) and “It takes too much physical effort “ (OR: 3.18; 95% CI: 2.05–4.94). In men, the main barriers were “It takes too much time” (OR: 4.22; 95% CI: 2.97–5.99), “involves too much planning” (OR: 2.49; 95% CI: 1.67–3.70) and “too much traffic along the route” (OR: 2.07; 95% CI: 1.47–2.93). Psychosocial barriers were found in both sexes. Conclusions: Psychosocial and personal barriers were more positively associated with passive commuting than environmental barriers. Interventions at the university are necessary to improve the perception of AC and encourage personal organization to travel more actively.
