Identification and predictability of soil quality indicators from conventional soil and vegetation classifications

Cellulose acetate-coated capacitive sensor for determining carbon-cycle enzymes activity and as a microbial Indicator for soil health

This study demonstrates cellulose acetate (CA)-coated screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) for soil microbial activity detection. A capacitive sensor design utilizes a coated CA layer for effective insulation in electrolytes, eliminating the need for additional signal protection. Optimization involved comparing spin and dip coating methods, with a one-layer 10-second dip coating identified as the best balance between quality and yield. These CA/SPCEs exhibited remarkable stability over a month, suggesting their potential for long-term use in monitoring agricultural soils. Analysis of CA/SPCE profile and thickness provided insights into surface characteristics and the impact of the CA coating on electrode roughness. ATR-FTIR analysis, along with capacitive sensing, demonstrated superior sensitivity and precision for monitoring CA film degradation compared to mechanical gauges. Chemical degradation studies suggest CA's potential immunity in near-neutral environments, while enzymatic degradation investigations revealed dominance by enzymes, particularly in the initial stages. The CA/SPCE sensor responds to both enzymatic and chemical degradation, potentially serving as an indicator of total soil microbial activity. Soil experiments explored CA/SPCE with Cap-S for microbial activity sensing. Significant differences in the long-term degradation rate were observed in mycorrhizal fungi-enriched soil compared to controls, highlighting microbial influences. This study underscores the adaptability and versatility of this technology, particularly for assessing C-cycle microbial activity in agricultural fields.

Litter and soil properties under woody and non-woody vegetation types: Implication for ecosystem management in a mountainous semi-arid landscape

There are contrasting reports about whether and how vegetation types influence litter and soil properties. Accurate and comprehensive assessment of the complex relationship between vegetation types, litter and soil characteristics in semi-arid mountain landscapes is almost unknown. Thus, the purpose of this research was to study the effects of (1) Carpinus orientalis Miller., (2) Crataegus melanocarpa M.B., (3) Rhamnus pallasii Fisch. and C.A.Mey, (4) Agropyron longiaristatum Boiss, (5) Bromus tomentolus Bioss. and (6) Hordeum vulgare L. on litter properties and soil physical, chemical, biochemical and biological features in northern Iran. A sampling of the organic layer (litter) and mineral soil (30 × 30 cm) from a depth of 0-10 cm was done for all characteristics in the summer season and for soil microclimate and biological characteristics in the summer and fall seasons. A total of 90 litter samples, 90 soil samples in summer and 90 soil samples in fall (6 vegetation types × 2 seasons × 15 samples) were taken from the area and transferred to the laboratory. Results showed that the Carpinus improved litter properties, soil organic matter contents, total N and available nutrients (P, K, Ca and Mg) and enzyme activities (urease, acid phosphatase, arylsulfatase and invertase). In addition, the population of earthworm groups (epigeic, anecic, and endogeic), acarina, collembola, nematodes, protozoa (especially in the fall season) and bacteria and fungi (especially in the summer season) under Carpinus significantly increased. Data analysis demonstrated higher soil fertility and biological activities in the woody vegetation, which can be assigned to the higher litter input and nutrients. Overall, the findings of this study showed that woody vegetation, especially Carpinus, can improve soil properties at high altitudes of mountainous, semi-arid sites that are often considered as especially fragile and sensitive ecosystems.

Assessing differential land use impacts on soil quality: A method based on log-response ratios and polygonal projections

Soil quality indices (SQI) used for assessing soil degradation are often developed using additive scoring functions. However, these SQI may lack reference values for interpreting their outputs and the capacity to differentiate changes in specific variables. To overcome these limitations, this study introduces SQI using Log Response Ratios (LRR) as measures of size effects caused by land use in physical, chemical, and microbiological soil quality indicators. LRR vectors projected 2D polygons with condensed change measures along their perimeters. This method was tested in andosols within the southeastern region of Antioquia, Colombia. These soils were subjected to contrasting stages of degradation determined by the extent of A-horizon removal due to land use practices. This study shows that mining and agriculture have detrimental effects on soil organic carbon and water contents, and that size effects vary significantly between land uses (p < 0.05). Microbiological features also exhibit distinct size effects, such as populations of culturable mesophilic bacteria and fungi, microbial basal respiration, spore density of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), their diversity, and total glomalin-related soil proteins (p < 0.05). The SQI proposed exhibited a negative correlation with SQI computed from scoring additive functions either considering the entire dataset (R2 = 0.87) or a minimum dataset (R2 = 0.90). This approach underscores the utility of using LRR geometrical analysis to assess global soil quality differences among land uses (p < 0.01), offering a visual, quantifiable representation of the effects of each land use over specific soil quality indicators.

A review on effective soil health bio-indicators for ecosystem restoration and sustainability

Preventing degradation, facilitating restoration, and maintaining soil health is fundamental for achieving ecosystem stability and resilience. A healthy soil ecosystem is supported by favorable components in the soil that promote biological productivity and provide ecosystem services. Bio-indicators of soil health are measurable properties that define the biotic components in soil and could potentially be used as a metric in determining soil functionality over a wide range of ecological conditions. However, it has been a challenge to determine effective bio-indicators of soil health due to its temporal and spatial resolutions at ecosystem levels. The objective of this review is to compile a set of effective bio-indicators for developing a better understanding of ecosystem restoration capabilities. It addresses a set of potential bio-indicators including microbial biomass, respiration, enzymatic activity, molecular gene markers, microbial metabolic substances, and microbial community analysis that have been responsive to a wide range of ecosystem functions in agricultural soils, mine deposited soil, heavy metal contaminated soil, desert soil, radioactive polluted soil, pesticide polluted soil, and wetland soils. The importance of ecosystem restoration in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals was also discussed. This review identifies key management strategies that can help in ecosystem restoration and maintain ecosystem stability.
