Abstract
Little is known about how subinhibitory concentrations of antibiotics to which bacteria are resistant affect bacterial virulence. In this study, the effect of subinhibitory concentrations of ampicillin on the virulence of E. coli O104:H4 was analyzed. Bacteria were pre-exposed to 0.1, 0.3, or 0.5 mg/mL of ampicillin in LB media and incubated for 4 h at 37 °C. Transformation capacity (using plasmids and PCR-amplified DNA sequences), swarming motility, biofilm production, curli formation, and virulence gene expression were determined. Ampicillin increased the transformation of E. coli O104:H4, with the highest number of transformants (>104 CFU/ng DNA; p ≤ 0.05) detected after exposure to DNA sequences of spectinomycin. In addition, bacteria pre-treated with 0.5 mg/mL of ampicillin exhibited higher swarming motility (7.6 cm, vs 6.0 cm for control; p ≤ 0.05) and biofilm production (up to 1.9-fold; p ≤ 0.05) when subsequently exposed to 0.1 and 0.3 mg/mL of antibiotic compared with the control. Also, significant overexpression of the virulence-related genes flhC (≤16.1-fold), fliA (≤22.1-fold), csgA (≤3.6-fold), csgD (≤9.1-fold), stx2a (≤32.2-fold), and the antibiotic resistance gene blaTEM-1 (≤5.5-fold) was observed. In conclusion, ampicillin-resistant E. coli O104:H4 increased the expression of its virulence factors when exposed to most subinhibitory concentrations of ampicillin analyzed in this study.

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a global public health concern. Recognizing the critical role of bacterial adhesion in pathogenesis of infection, anti-adhesive therapy emerges as a promising approach to impede initial bacterial attachment, thus preventing pathogenic colonization and infection. Natural anti-adhesive agents derived from food sources are generally safe and have the potential to inhibit the emergence of resistant bacteria. This comprehensive review explored diverse natural dietary components exhibiting anti-adhesive activities against several model enteric pathogens, including Helicobacter pylori, Salmonella enterica, Clostridium difficile, and three key diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (i.e., enterotoxigenic E. coli, enteropathogenic E. coli, and enterohemorrhagic E. coli). Investigating various anti-adhesive products will advance our understanding of current research of the field and inspire further development of these agents as potential nutraceuticals or adjuvants to improve the efficacy of conventional antibiotics.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Oreganum vulgare essential oil (OEO) is safe, effective, multifunctional, and widely used. This study aimed to evaluate OEO's chemical composition and antimicrobial activity in vitro against S. aureus and E. coli. Methods: The composition of OEO was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results: Compounds included monoterpenes with known antimicrobial activity, such as 2-menthen-1-ol (36.33%), linalyl acetate (9.26%), terpinene-4-ol (9.01%), 4-thujanol (6.33%), menthen (5.81%), sabinene (5.18%), and carvacrol methyl ether (5.14%). Conclusions: OEO had a strong antimicrobial activity with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1.90 mg/mL for S. aureus and 0.49 mg/mL for E. coli after 18 h incubation. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was 7.9 mg/mL against S. aureus and 0.99 mg/mL against E. coli. Thus, OEO could be used as a natural antimicrobial against S. aureus and E. coli infections.

Abstract
PURPOSE Besides comprising scaffolding, extracellular matrix components modulate many biological processes including inflammation and cell differentiation. We previously found precoating cell plates with extracellular matrix collagen I, or its denatured product gelatin, causes aggregation of macrophage-like human lymphoma U937 cells, which are induced to differentiation by phorbol myristate treatment. In the present study, we investigated the influence of gelatin or collagen I precoating on the bacteria phagocytosis in PMA-stimulated U937 cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS Colony forming units of phagocytosed bacteria, Giemsa-staining of cells with phagocytosed bacteria, confocal microscopic and flow cytometric analysis of cells with phagocytosed FITC-labeled bacteria and non-bioactive latex beats were conducted. RESULTS Gelatin precoating enhances the phagocytosis of both Gram-negative and positive bacteria, as shown by the increased colony forming units of bacteria phagocytosed by cells, and increased intracellular bacteria observed after Giemsa-staining. But collagen I has no marked influence. Confocal microscopy reveals that both live and dead FITC-bacteria were phagocytosed more in the cells with gelatin-coating but not collagen-coating. Of note, both gelatin and collagen I coating had no influence on the phagocytosis of non-bioactive latex beads. Since gelatin-coating increases autophagy but collagen I has no such impact, we are curious about the role of autophagy. Inhibiting autophagy reduced the phagocytosis of bacteria, in cells with gelatin-coating, while stimulating autophagy enhanced phagocytosis. CONCLUSION This study finds the bacteria-phagocytosis stimulatory effect of gelatin in PMA-treated U937 cells and reveals the positive regulatory role of autophagy, predicting the potential use of gelatin products in anti-bacterial therapy.

Abstract
A biofilm is a microbial community formed by bacteria that adsorb on the surface of tissues or materials and is wrapped in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) such as polysaccharides, proteins and nucleic acids. As a protective barrier, the EPS can not only prevent the penetration of antibiotics and other antibacterial agents into the biofilm, but also protect the bacteria in the biofilm from the attacks of the human immune system, making it difficult to eradicate biofilm-related infections and posing a serious threat to public health. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new and efficient antibiofilm drugs. Although natural enzymes (lysozyme, peroxidase, etc.) and antimicrobial peptides have excellent bactericidal activity, their low stability in the physiological environment and poor permeability in biofilms limit their application in antibiofilms. With the development of materials science, more and more nanomaterials are being designed to be utilized for antimicrobial and antibiofilm applications. Nanomaterials have great application prospects in antibiofilm because of their good biocompati-bility, unique physical and chemical properties, adjustable nanostructure, high permeability and non-proneness to induce bacterial resistance. In this review, with the application of composite nanomaterials in antibiofilms as the theme, we summarize the research progress of three types of composite nanomaterials, including organic composite materials, inorganic materials and organic-inorganic hybrid materials, used as antibiofilms with non-phototherapy and phototherapy modes of action. At the same time, the challenges and development directions of these composite nanomaterials in antibiofilm therapy are also discussed. It is expected we will provide new ideas for the design of safe and efficient antibiofilm materials.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance is currently one of the greatest threats to human health. Widespread use and residues of antibiotics in humans, animals, and the environment can exert selective pressure on antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance gene (ARG), accelerating the flow of antibiotic resistance. As ARG spreads to the population, the burden of antibiotic resistance in humans increases, which may have potential health effects on people. Therefore, it is critical to mitigate the spread of antibiotic resistance to humans and reduce the load of antibiotic resistance in humans. This review briefly described the information of global antibiotic consumption information and national action plans (NAPs) to combat antibiotic resistance and provided a set of feasible control strategies for the transmission of ARB and ARG to humans in three areas including (a) Reducing the colonization capacity of exogenous ARB, (b) Enhancing human colonization resistance and mitigating the horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of ARG, (c) Reversing ARB antibiotic resistance. With the hope of achieving interdisciplinary one-health prevention and control of bacterial resistance.

Abstract
Infectious diseases caused by antimicrobial-resistant strains have become a serious threat to global health, with a high social and economic impact. Multi-resistant bacteria exhibit various mechanisms at both the cellular and microbial community levels. Among the different strategies proposed to fight antibiotic resistance, we reckon that the inhibition of bacterial adhesion to host surfaces represents one of the most valid approaches, since it hampers bacterial virulence without affecting cell viability. Many different structures and biomolecules involved in the adhesion of Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens can be considered valuable targets for the development of promising tools to enrich our arsenal against pathogens.

Abstract
Nematopsis messor infections severely impact on shrimp’s health with devastating economic consequences on shrimp farming. In a shrimp primary intestinal cells (SGP) model of infection, a sub-inhibitory concentration (0.5%) of natural antimicrobials (Aq) was able to reduce the ability of N. messor to infect (p < 0.0001). To prevent N. messor infection of SGP cells, Aq inhibits host actin polymerization and restores tight junction integrity (TEER) and the expression of Zo-1 and occluding. The oxidative burst, caused by N. messor infection, is attenuated by Aq through the inhibition of NADPH-produced H2O2. Simultaneous to the reduction in H2O2 released, the activity of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were also significantly increase (p < 0.0001). The antimicrobial mixture inactivates the ERK signal transduction pathway by tyrosine dephosphorylation and reduces the expression of DCR2, ALF-A, and ALF-C antimicrobial peptides. The observed in vitro results were also translated in vivo, whereby the use of a shrimp challenge test, we show that in N. messor infected shrimp the mortality rate was 68% compared to the Aq-treated group where the mortality rate was maintained at 14%. The significant increase in CAT and SOD activity in treated and infected shrimp suggested an in vivo antioxidant role for Aq. In conclusion, our study shows that Aq can efficiently reduce N. messor colonization of shrimp’s intestinal cells in vitro and in vivo and the oxidative induced cellular damage, repairs epithelial integrity, and enhances gut immunity.

Abstract
Caesalpinia sappan and Haematoxylum brasiletto belong to the Fabaceae family, predominantly distributed in Southeast Asia and America. The isoflavonoid brazilin has been identified from the bark and heartwood of these plants. This review summarizes the studies describing the biological activities of these plants and brazilin. Mainly, brazilin protects cells from oxidative stress, shows anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, and hypoglycemic effect. In addition, it has a biological impact on various pathologies such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, fibrillogenesis, and osteoarthritis. Interestingly, most of the antecedents are related to the anticancer effect of brazilin. In several cancers such as osteosarcoma, neuroblastoma, multiple myeloma, glioblastoma, bladder, melanoma, breast, tongue, colon, cervical, head, and neck squamous cell carcinoma, brazilin induces autophagy by increasing the levels of the LC3-II protein. Furthermore, it inhibits cell proliferation and induces apoptosis through increased expression of Bcl-2, Bcl-XL, p21, p27, activation of caspase-3 and -7, and the cleavage of PARP and inhibiting the expression of Bax. In addition, it blocks the expression of JNK and regulates the nuclear translocation of Nrf2. Together, these data positions brazilin as a compound of natural origin with multiple bioactivities and therapeutic potential in various chronic degenerative diseases and cancer.

Abstract
The innate immune system has developed sophisticated strategies to defense against infections. Host cells utilize the recognition machineries such as toll-like receptors and nucleotide binding and oligomerization domain-like receptors to identify the pathogens and alert immune system. However, some pathogens have developed tactics to evade host defenses, including manipulation of host inflammatory response, interference with cell death pathway, and highjack of phagocytosis signaling for a better survival and colonization in host. Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) is a notorious foodborne pathogen that causes severe tissue damages and gastrointestinal diseases, which has been reported to disturb host immune responses. Diverse bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, alkaloids, saccharides, and terpenoids derived from food varieties and probiotics have been discovered and investigated for their capability of combating bacterial infections. Some of them serve as novel antimicrobial agents and act as immune boosters that harness host immune system. In this review, we will discuss how EHEC, specifically E. coli O157:H7, hijacks the host immune system and interferes with host signaling pathway; and highlight the promising role of food-derived bioactive compounds and probiotics in harnessing host innate immunity and eliminating E. coli O157:H7 infection with multiple strategies.
