Abstract
CONTEXT Functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs) are debilitating disorders with unknown current prevalence. OBJECTIVE To estimate global prevalence rates of FAPDs, their entities, and variations by diagnostic criteria, geography, gender, and age. DATA SOURCES Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, and Cochrane Library were searched through October 14, 2024. STUDY SELECTION Epidemiological studies of birth cohorts, school based, and from general population samples reporting FAPD prevalence in children (aged 4-18 years) using the Rome criteria. DATA EXTRACTION Two researchers independently performed screening, data extraction, and quality assessment. RESULTS A total of 66 studies, encompassing 201 134 participants from 29 countries, were included. The estimated global pooled prevalence of FAPDs was 11.7% (95% CI, 10.5%-13.1%). The most prevalent type was irritable bowel syndrome (5.8%; 95% CI, 4.5-7.4%), while functional abdominal pain-not otherwise specified was least prevalent (1.2%; 95% CI, 0.7%-2.1%)). Prevalence was highest using Rome III (13.2%; 95% CI, 11.3%-15.3%) and lowest under Rome IV criteria (9.0%; 95% CI, 6.7%-12.0%; P = .05). Girls had higher prevalence (14.4%; 95% CI, 12.5%-16.6%) than boys (9.4%; 95% CI, 7.8%-11.4%; P < .01). FAPDs were nonsignificantly more prevalent in Asia (13.0%; 95% CI, 10.4%-16.3%) compared to Europe (8.3%; 95% CI, 6.4%-10.7%) and North America (7.7%; 95% CI, 4.3-13.6; P = .09). No differences by age (P = .14) were recorded. Contributing factors include anxiety, depression, stress, negative life events, and poor sleep. LIMITATIONS Language restrictions, significant interstudy heterogeneity, and underrepresentation from Africa. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE FAPDs affect over 1 in 9 children worldwide, with higher prevalence in girls and those with psychological stressors.

Abstract
Belching is the act of expelling air from the stomach or esophagus into the pharynx. Although the process is regarded as physiological, excessive belching might be associated with a significant burden for affected patients in the sense of a belching disorder. Diagnosis of a belching disorder is often challenging, and its differentiation from other conditions such as rumination syndrome, singultus, or aerophagia can be difficult. Treatment of these disorders also represents a challenge for otorhinolaryngologists. Hence, the aim of this review is to provide an interdisciplinary overview of these clinical syndromes and provide practical guidance for their diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aerophagia (ingestion of air), is a functional aerodigestive disorder in people. Criteria for diagnosis of aerophagia in dogs are >1/3 of bolus volume containing air or ingested air resulting in gastric distention (>1/3 of end gastric volume). Aerophagia is highlighted during eating and drinking. Videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) document aerophagia in dogs, but the incidence, clinical signs (CS), and associated disorders are unknown. OBJECTIVES Identify the incidence of aerophagia, compare CS between dogs with and without aerophagia, and identify associated and predisposing disorders using VFSS. ANIMALS A total of 120 client-owned dogs. METHODS Sequential VFSS and associated medical records from dogs presenting to veterinary teaching hospitals at Auburn University and the University of Missouri were retrospectively reviewed. Statistical comparisons were made using Mann-Whitney and chi-squared tests, odds ratios (OR), and multiple logistic regression (P < .05). RESULTS The incidence (95% confidence interval [CI]) of aerophagia was 40% (31.7-48.9). Dogs with mixed CS (gastrointestinal [GI] and respiratory; P < .001, 58.3%) were more likely to have aerophagia than dogs with exclusively respiratory CS (25%). Aerophagia was significantly more common in brachycephalic dogs (P = .01; 45.8% vs 13.8%), dogs with nonbrachycephalic upper airway obstruction (P < .001; 33.3% vs 4.1%), pathologic penetration and aspiration (P-A) scores (P = .04; 41.6% vs 23.6%), and gagging (P < .001; 25% vs 11.7%). Mixed CS (P = .01), brachycephaly (P < .001), and upper airway obstruction (P < .001) were independent predictors of aerophagia. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Aerophagia was common, particularly in dogs with mixed CS. Brachycephalic dogs and dogs with upper airway obstruction are predisposed. Aspiration risk was high, emphasizing overlapping upper aerodigestive pathways.

Abstract
A 43-year-old woman experienced acute nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, leading her to our hospital. No relevant medical history or physical abnormalities were noted. Symptoms persisted for a month, causing weight loss and abdominal bloating. CT scans revealed distension throughout the gastrointestinal tract without stenosis. Intestinal pseudo-obstruction and aerophagia were suspected. MR enterography confirmed normal gastric and intestinal motility, diagnosing the condition as aerophagia-induced gastrointestinal distention. This case underscores the value of MR enterography in assessing intestinal motility and differentiating between intestinal pseudo-obstruction and aerophagia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Disorders of Gut-Brain Interactions (DGBI) are a common clinical problem in children and pose significant challenges to the attending pediatrician. Radiological investigations are commonly ordered to evaluate these children. AREA COVERED This review focuses on the current best practice of using radiological investigations in DGBIs and how novel radiological investigations could revolutionize the assessment and therapeutic approach of DGBI in children. EXPERT OPINION We believe imaging in DGBI is still in its early stages, but it has the potential to revolutionize how we diagnose and treat children with DGBI. As the understanding of the gut-brain axis continues to grow, we can expect to see the disappearance of conventional imaging techniques and the emergence of more sophisticated imaging techniques with less radiation exposure in the future which provide more clinically meaningful information regarding the gut-brain axis and its influence on intestinal function. Some of the novel imaging modalities will be able to broaden our horizon of understanding DGBI in children providing more useful therapeutic options to minimize their suffering.
