Endobronchial fibroepithelial polyp

Benign airway tumors are rare and represent only 1.9% of pulmonary tumors. Fibroepithelial polyps are common benign lesions in the skin, uterus, and neck; however, it is rare in the tracheobronchial tree with only sporadic case reports. The etiology is unclear, but it is thought to be due to inflammation or infection, especially in smokers and in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In this case report, we describe a rare case of endobronchial fibroepithelial polyp and the utility of an interventional endobronchial therapeutic approach.

Tracheal polyp

Benign tracheal tumors are rare, recurrent papillomatosis being the most common. They often simulate obstructive pulmonary diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and patients with benign tracheal tumors often undergo long-term treatment for such diseases, without any improvement, Therefore, these tumors should be included in the differential diagnosis in patients presenting tracheobronchial tree obstruction. This report describes the case of a patient with a tracheal polyp. The patient presented symptoms for three years, and the spirometry findings suggested intrathoracic obstruction. The patient presented complete clinical and spirometric recovery after bronchoscopic resection of the tumor.

A rare case of a tracheal fibroepithelial polyp treated by an endobronchial resection

This report describes a very rare case of a tracheal fibroepithelial polyp. A 69-year-old male had been treated in this department because of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease since 2006. In July 2007, chest computed tomography revealed a bronchial tumor located at the distal end of the trachea. A bronchoscopic examination revealed a multilocular polyp. An endobronchial resection was performed to remove the lesion. A tracheobronchial fibroepithelial polyp is very rare. We herein describe and discuss the appropriate therapeutic policy and also review the pertinent literature.

A giant endobronchial inflammatory polyp

Bronchial inflammatory polyps are defined as tumor-like lesions. They are usually related to chronic inflammatory processes in the adult. Because they may cause complications, they should be surgically removed. A 55-year-old male patient had been followed for recurrent pulmonary infections for 40 years. His main symptoms were orthopnea and hemoptysis upon admission to our hospital. A chest computerized tomography (CT) revealed bronchiectasis located at the right middle lobe and lower lobe and obstruction of the main bronchus at the level of carina. In bronchoscopy a mobile polypoid pinkish lesion protruding to the trachea was observed. We performed an inferior bilobectomy. The pathological examination revealed an endobronchial fibroepithelial polyp. The presence of a giant endobronchial polyp with chronic respiratory symptoms over an extended period of time and the rarity of information pertaining to these lesions in the literature provoked intrigue and constituted a worthy presentation.

Tracheal polyp

Benign tumors of the tracheobronchial tree are extremely rare. A case of a benign inflammatory endotracheal polyp and literature review are presented, including classification and treatment options. Although rare, these lesions must be efficiently diagnosed and expeditiously removed to prevent airway occlusion or irreversible pulmonary disease.

Inflammatory endobronchial polyposis with bronchiectasis in cystic fibrosis

An unusual case of endobronchial polyposis associated with extensive bronchiectasis in the context of cystic fibrosis (CF) has been described. A 15-yr-old female patient with CF underwent partial pneumonectomy for extensive bronchiectasis and frequent infective pulmonary exacerbations. Cylindrical bronchiectasis with associated purulent bronchitis and bronchiolitis, together with inflammatory polyposis, was noted in the resected lung. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of multiple endobronchial polyposis and may represent a rare complication of bronchiectasis in a patient with cystic fibrosis. On-going infection and the cellular composition of the polyps are discussed in relation to their possible aetiological relevance and relationship to upper respiratory tract polyps.

Invasive fibrous tumor of the tracheobronchial tree: clinical and pathologic study of seven cases

We describe seven cases of invasive fibrous tumors of the trachea and major bronchi with distinctive histologies and patterns of growth. The tumors are composed of proliferating fibroblasts and have moderate nuclear pleomorphism and low mitotic activity. The tumors bear some resemblance to inflammatory pseudotumor of the lung, fibrous histiocytoma, and fibromatosis, but differ from each of these entities. The tumors are neoplastic and invade down to or between plates of cartilage. Because of their proximal location, these tumors are usually amenable to sleeve resection. Recurrence is possible. Metastasis has not occurred. Distinction from more malignant mesenchymal tumors of the trachea and bronchus will prevent unnecessarily radical surgery.

Endobronchial inflammatory polyp associated with a foreign body. Successful treatment with corticosteroids

We describe a case of endobronchial polyp associated with a foreign body. To our knowledge, this is the first report of such an occurrence. The polyp was successfully treated with steroids. This is only the third report of steroid treatment of endobronchial polyps.
