Abstract
Eslicarbazepine acetate (ESL) is a third-generation antiepileptic drug indicated as monotherapy for adults with newly diagnosed epilepsy and as adjunctive therapy for the treatment of partial seizures. Our aim was to assess the effectiveness and safety of both acute and repeated ESL administration against reflex audiogenic seizures, as shown by the Genetic Audiogenic Seizures Hamster from Salamanca (GASH/Sal). Animals were subject to the intraperitoneal administration of ESL, applying doses of 100, 150 and 200 mg/kg for the acute study, whereas a daily dose of 100 mg/kg was selected for the subchronic study, which lasted 14 days. In both studies, the anticonvulsant effect of the therapy was evaluated using neuroethological methods. To assess the safety of the treatment, behavioral tests were performed, hematological and biochemical liver profiles were obtained, and body weight was monitored. In addition, the ESL levels in blood were measured after the acute administration of a 200 mg/kg dose. Treatment with ESL caused a reduction in seizure severity. No statistically significant differences were detected between the selected doses or between the acute or repeated administration of the drug. To summarize, the intraperitoneal administration of ESL is safe and shows an anticonvulsant effect in the GASH/Sal.

Abstract
Imaging brain learning and memory circuit kinase signaling is a monumental challenge. The separation of phases-based activity reporter of kinase (SPARK) biosensors allow circuit-localized studies of multiple interactive kinases in vivo, including protein kinase A (PKA) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling. In the precisely-mapped Drosophila brain learning/memory circuit, we find PKA and ERK signaling differentially enriched in distinct Kenyon cell connectivity nodes. We discover that potentiating normal circuit activity induces circuit-localized PKA and ERK signaling, expanding kinase function within new presynaptic and postsynaptic domains. Activity-induced PKA signaling shows extensive overlap with previously selective ERK signaling nodes, while activity-induced ERK signaling arises in new connectivity nodes. We find targeted synaptic transmission blockade in Kenyon cells elevates circuit-localized ERK induction in Kenyon cells with normally high baseline ERK signaling, suggesting lateral and feedback inhibition. We discover overexpression of the pathway-linking Meng-Po (human SBK1) serine/threonine kinase to improve learning acquisition and memory consolidation results in dramatically heightened PKA and ERK signaling in separable Kenyon cell circuit connectivity nodes, revealing both synchronized and untapped signaling potential. Finally, we find that a mechanically-induced epileptic seizure model (easily shocked "bang-sensitive" mutants) has strongly elevated, circuit-localized PKA and ERK signaling. Both sexes were used in all experiments, except for the hemizygous male-only seizure model. Hyperexcitable, learning-enhanced, and epileptic seizure models have comparably elevated interactive kinase signaling, suggesting a common basis of use-dependent induction. We conclude that PKA and ERK signaling modulation is locally coordinated in use-dependent spatial circuit dynamics underlying seizure susceptibility linked to learning/memory potential.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to analyze the efficiency of corpus callosotomy (CC) and subsequent disconnection surgeries in patients with late-onset epileptic spasms (LOES) by comparing post-encephalitis/encephalopathy (PE) and non-encephalitis/encephalopathy (NE). We hypothesized these surgeries can control potential focal onset epileptic spasms (ES) in the NE group but not in the PE group. METHODS We retrospectively included 23 patients (12 with PE and 11 with NE) who initially underwent CC and subsequent disconnection surgeries (five NE). We compared the clinical courses, seizure types, MRI, video-EEG, epilepsy surgery, and seizure outcomes between the two groups. RESULTS The median age of LOES onset in the PE group was 2.8 (range 1.0-10.1 years) and 2.9 years (range 1.1-12.6) in the NE group. Bilateral MRI abnormalities were observed in both groups (PE, n = 12; NE, n = 3; P < 0.05). The PE group presented ES alone (n = 2), ES + focal seizures (FS) (n = 3), ES + generalized seizures (GS) (n = 3), and ES + FS + GS (n = 4) in addition to stimulus-induced startle seizures (SS) (n = 8) (mean 3.1 seizure types/patient). The NE group presented ES alone (n = 1), ES + FS (n = 2), and ES + FS + GS (n = 8) (mean 2.7 seizure types/patient). In the PE group, CC stopped ES (n = 1) and SS (n = 1) and achieved <50% SS (n = 3). In the NE group, CC achieved immediate ES-free status (n = 2) and < 50% ES (n = 1), and additional disconnection surgeries subsided all seizure types (n = 3) based on lateralized interictal/ictal EEG findings. LOES was significantly remitted by surgery in the NE group (6/11 [55%]) compared with the PE group (1/12 [8%]) (P < 0.05). SIGNIFICANCE LOES is a drug-resistant, focal/generalized/unknown onset ES. Lateralization of ES in NE could be achieved after CC and eliminated by further disconnection surgeries because of potential focal onset ES. LOES in PE had little benefit from CC for generalized onset ES. However, CC might reduce SS in patients in the PE group with multiple seizure types.

Abstract
Reflex epilepsies are a unique and heterogeneous group of epilepsies characterized by recurrent seizure activity evoked by a specific external sensory stimulus or internal cognitive process. Reflex seizures can be part of other epilepsy syndromes including focal and generalized syndromes and have a growing spectrum of presentations. We report a further subtype of reflex seizures associated with towel exposure. We give an account of a case of drug-refractory focal epilepsy admitted to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit for presurgical assessment with 50% of seizures triggered in response to the touch, feel, smell and thoughts around towels. We reviewed the literature regarding the broad phenotype of reflex epilepsies and seizures.

Background
Reflex seizures (RS) induced by micturition are extremely rare, and the clinical and electroencephalogram features of RS are not widely known among clinicians. In particular, the origin of the epileptic area is still unclear.
Case presentation
An 8-year-old girl who had generalized tonic-clonic seizures was diagnosed with RS induced by micturition based on the clinical manifestation and EEG recordings. We also reviewed the clinical and EEG characteristics of RS induced by micturition in literature by searching the databases of PubMed and MEDLINE using keywords “micturition reflex seizure”, “reflex seizure induced by micturition”, and “micturition induced seizure” by January 2022. We speculate that the mechanism of micturition-induced RS may involve excessive neuronal excitation in regions that participate in micturition.
Conclusions
The RS in this patient was considered to be induced by micturition. Awareness should be raised to this rare form of RS among practitioners.

Abstract
ObjectiveThis study aimed to delineate the detailed characteristics of startle-induced epileptic spasms (ES) and explore the brain regions where startle-induced ES originated.MethodsAmong 581 patients with ES registered in our database, 30 were diagnosed with startle-induced ES according to video-electroencephalogram (EEG) and seizure semiology and were included in this study. Patients' clinical characteristics and ictal high-frequency oscillations (HFOs) were analyzed.ResultsMean age at the onset of startle-induced ES was 28.1 months. Half of the patients had structural etiology, two of whom were diagnosed with co-existing structural and genetic etiologies. The focal neuroimaging abnormalities were predominant in the frontal cortex (9/15, 60.0%). Fifteen patients (50%) had prominent interictal epileptiform discharges in the frontal and anterior temporal. Ictal HFOs counts of the startle-induced ES in the anterior region were significantly higher than those in the posterior regions (p < 0.05). Five patients (16.7%) became seizure-free ≥6 months, and ten (33.3%) showed startle-induced ES cessation ≥6 months. All patients except one had mild to severe psychomotor developmental delay after the onset of seizures.ConclusionPatients with startle-induced ES typically had brain lesions and showed drug-resistant. The neuroimaging and EEG findings, including ictal HFOs, support that startle-induced ES often originates from the frontal cortex.

Abstract
PROBLEM Many studies focus on knowledge and attitudes of unaffected people towards epilepsy and people with epilepsy (PWE). The perspective of PWE themselves is much less explored. METHODS We invited PWE in Germany to answer a questionnaire on their knowledge and attitudes towards epilepsy and PWE. RESULTS The questionnaire was completed by 230 PWE (median age: 40 years; min./max.: 19/83; 66 % female). Of PWE, 22 % thought that PWE are more helpful, and 10 % thought that PWE are friendlier than other people. Nevertheless, reservations about relationships and friendships with other PWE existed: of the participants, only 74 % would definitely go on a date with another PWE, and 90 % would definitely include another PWE they liked into their circle of friends. Swimming was judged as more dangerous for PWE than for healthy people by 71 % of PWE. Of PWE, 86 % correctly assumed it was not useful to hold a person having a seizure to the ground. Putting a solid object in the mouth was considered not useful by 85 % of PWE. Of PWE, 20 % would definitely administer an available emergency medication if another PWE had a seizure. For 67 % of PWE, certain preconditions should have to be fulfilled such as an available document with instructions. Of PWE, 11 % stated they would not administer an available emergency medication if another PWE had a seizure. CONCLUSION Although positive attitudes of PWE towards other PWE exist, we also found some reservations calling for psychosocial support. Most PWE had sufficient knowledge about risks of certain activities and about measures to be taken during a seizure. Nevertheless, a small group of PWE showed knowledge gaps. Thus, educational support still seems essential.

Abstract
We describe a unique clinical presentation of a child after the acute phase of herpes
simplex virus 1 (HSV1) encephalitis. A 17-month-old boy first presented with HSV1
encephalitis and was promptly treated with antiviral medication. Seven months later, he
was re-admitted for startle seizures. Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the brain showed
diffuse confluent leukoencephalopathy. This constellation of symptoms has not been
previously reported in HSV1 encephalitis. In conclusion, we showed that brain injury due
to HSV1 encephalitis can be associated with the development of startle seizures and
diffuse white matter injury in the post-acute phase.

Abstract
Epilepsy is a serious neurological disorder characterized by abnormal, recurrent, and synchronous discharges in the brain. Long-term recurrent seizure attacks can cause serious damage to brain function, which is usually observed in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Controlling seizure attacks is vital for the treatment and prognosis of epilepsy. Animal models, such as the kindling model, which was the most widely used model in the past, allow the understanding of the potential epileptogenic mechanisms and selection of antiepileptic drugs. In recent years, various animal models of epilepsy have been established to mimic different seizure types, without clear merits and demerits. Accordingly, this review provides a summary of the views mentioned above, aiming to provide a reference for animal model selection.

Abstract
The journal "Aging and Disease" has released a special issue focused on novel concepts in understanding the pathophysiology and treatment of neurological and neurodegenerative disorders. The special issue comprises review and original research articles discussing the various disease mechanisms and/or treatment updates on aging, mild cognitive impairment, dementia, acute stroke, pediatric stroke, super-refractory status epilepticus, reflex epilepsy, drug-resistant epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and traumatic brain injury. This editorial discusses the highlights from these articles.
