Effect of Yoga on Endothelial Function: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Introduction: Endothelial dysfunction is the initial step in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis; and it plays a central role in the development of cardiovascular diseases and many types of human diseases (diabetes, kidney failure, cancer, and viral infections). Strategies that are effective in protecting vascular endothelial function and retard or reversing endothelial dysfunction in the early stage appear to be potential in the prevention of vascular, cardiac, and many human diseases. Several studies have been carried out on the effects of yoga on endothelial function, but the results of these studies have not been synthesized. This study aimed at conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the effectiveness of yoga on endothelial function. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis of studies that assessed the effect of yoga practice on vascular endothelial function was done as per the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. The PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Cochrane controlled register of trials (CENTRAL) were searched from inception to August 2022. The search strategy was constructed around yoga-based techniques and endothelial function. All the yoga-based interventional studies on endothelial function or dysfunction were included in this review. A narrative synthesis and descriptive analysis were done due to the diverse methodology of selected studies. We carried out a formal meta-analysis of controlled trials that assessed the effect of yoga on flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), a measure of endothelial function. Results: A total of 18 studies were included for review involving 1043 participants. Yoga training showed improved endothelial function in 12 studies, whereas 6 studies did not find any statistically robust effect. Meta-analysis (n = 395 participants, 6-studies, 7 comparisons) showed an increase in brachial FMD by yoga practice (mean difference = -1.23%; 95% confidence interval -2.23 to -0.23; p = 0.02). The heterogeneity between the studies was 43% (Tau2 = 0.70, χ2 = 10.49). The risk of bias was low to moderate in these studies. No adverse effects were reported. Conclusions: Yoga practice improved endothelial function. Yoga could be a safe and potential integrative medicine to improve endothelial function. However, as the statistical heterogeneity, that is, variation in the FMD among the studies was moderate, large clinical trials are necessary for its clinical recommendations.

Exploring the evolving function of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 in junction dynamics during spermatogenesis

Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on immune, endothelial, and epithelial cells. Its ectodomain can be proteolytically cleaved to release a circulating soluble form called sICAM-1. Clinical studies demonstrate sICAM-1 is upregulated in various diseases and associated with disease severity. Research has identified sICAM-1 as a regulator of the blood-testis barrier (BTB) and spermatogenesis. Overexpression of sICAM-1 weakened the BTB in vitro and in vivo, downregulated junction proteins including N-cadherin, γ-catenin, and connexin 43, and caused germ cell loss. This contrasts with barrier-strengthening effects of membrane-bound ICAM-1. sICAM-1 may act as a molecular switch enabling germ cells to open BTB and Sertoli-germ cell adhesion for transport across the seminiferous epithelium. While the mechanism remains unclear, reduced SRC family kinase (SFK) signaling was observed following sICAM-1 overexpression. SRC promotes BTB protein endocytosis and degradation, influences cytoskeletal dynamics, and affects cell polarity. As sICAM-1 overexpression phenocopies SRC inhibition, SRC may operate downstream of sICAM-1 in regulating BTB dynamics and spermatogenesis. Investigating sICAM-1's structure-function regions and downstream targets will elucidate the molecular mechanisms of junction disruption. This knowledge could enable strategies targeting sICAM-1/SRC to modulate BTB permeability and treat male infertility or diseases involving endothelial/epithelial barrier dysfunction.

Effect of Oral Care on Endothelial Dysfunction in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome

Periodontitis is a common chronic infection and is associated with cardiovascular disease. This study evaluated whether basic oral care for periodontal disease could improve endothelial function in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).This study enrolled 54 patients with acute coronary syndrome admitted to Kagoshima City Hospital and who had undergone percutaneous coronary intervention. Flow-mediated endothelium-dependent dilatation (FMD) was measured before discharge (initial FMD) and at 8 months after percutaneous coronary intervention (follow-up FMD). The following periodontal characteristics were measured: periodontal pocket depth (PPD, mm), plaque control record (%), and bleeding on probing (%). All patients received basic oral care instructions from dentists. The oral health condition was generally poor in the participants and there were 24 patients (44.4%) who had severe PPD. Despite the intervention of basic oral care, the periodontal characteristics did not improve during the study period; initial FMD and follow-up FMD did not significantly differ (4.38 ± 2.74% versus 4.56 ± 2.51%, P = 0.562). However, the follow-up FMD was significantly lower in patients with severe PPD (≥ 6.0 mm, n = 24) than in patients without severe PPD (≤ 5.0 mm, n = 30) (FMD: 3.58 ± 1.91% versus 5.37 ± 2.67%, P = 0.007). FMD tended to be worse in patients with severe PPD than in patients without severe PPD (ΔFMD: -0.55 ± 2.12 versus 0.81 ± 2.77 %, P = 0.055). In conclusion, during the use of basic oral care, endothelial function improved in patients without severe PPD, while it worsened in patients with severe PPD.

Flow-Mediated Dilatation in the Assessment of Coronary Heart Disease: A Meta-Analysis

Endothelial dysfunction may contribute to the increased morbidity and mortality associated with coronary heart disease (CHD). Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) is the most popular noninvasive method for vascular endothelial function evaluation. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the association between FMD and CHD. We searched the publications listed in the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase databases. Stata 14 software was used to analyze the data. Standardized mean difference (SMD) was used to calculate FMD levels, and the effect sizes were expressed with a 95% confidence interval (CI). I² statistics were used to evaluate statistical heterogeneity. In this meta-analysis, 9 studies enrolled a total number of 943 participants, including 534 (56.63%) patients with CHD and 409 controls (43.37%). We found that patients with CHD showed a significantly lower FMD than the controls (SMD −0.706%; 95% CI: −0.985, −0.427; P=0.001) with high heterogeneity. In addition, funnel plot analysis suggested asymmetry that could be evidence of publication bias. But sensitivity analyses show that there were no influential studies. This meta-analysis provides evidence that patients with CHD show a significantly lower FMD than controls and highlights the literature on FMD as a hallmark in CHD diseases.

Association between cardiometabolic risk factors and COVID-19 susceptibility, severity and mortality: a review

The novel coronavirus, which began spreading from China Wuhan and gradually spreaded to most countries, led to the announcement by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020, as a new pandemic. The most important point presented by the World Health Organization about this disease is to better understand the risk factors that exacerbate the course of the disease and worsen its prognosis. Due to the high majority of cardio metabolic risk factors like obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia among the population over 60 years old and higher, these cardio metabolic risk factors along with the age of these people could worsen the prognosis of the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) and its mortality. In this study, we aimed to review the articles from the beginning of the pandemic on the impression of cardio metabolic risk factors on COVID-19 and the effectiveness of COVID-19 on how to manage these diseases. All the factors studied in this article, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and obesity exacerbate the course of Covid-19 disease by different mechanisms, and the inflammatory process caused by coronavirus can also create a vicious cycle in controlling these diseases for patients.

COVID-19 and Diabetes: A Comprehensive Review of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme 2, Mutual Effects and Pharmacotherapy

The potential relationship between diabetes and COVID-19 has been evaluated. However, new knowledge is rapidly emerging. In this study, we systematically reviewed the relationship between viral cell surface receptors (ACE2, AXL, CD147, DC-SIGN, L-SIGN and DPP4) and SARS-CoV-2 infection risk, and emphasized the implications of ACE2 on SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 pathogenesis. Besides, we updated on the two-way interactions between diabetes and COVID-19, as well as the treatment options for COVID-19 comorbid patients from the perspective of ACE2. The efficacies of various clinical chemotherapeutic options, including anti-diabetic drugs, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors, lipid-lowering drugs, anticoagulants, and glucocorticoids for COVID-19 positive diabetic patients were discussed. Moreover, we reviewed the significance of two different forms of ACE2 (mACE2 and sACE2) and gender on COVID-19 susceptibility and severity. This review summarizes COVID-19 pathophysiology and the best strategies for clinical management of diabetes patients with COVID-19.

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Effect of Statins on Circulating E-Selectin, L-Selectin, and P-Selectin

The pleiotropic effects of statins might involve preventing inflammatory cell adhesion to the endothelium, which is a critical step in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of statins on the circulating cell adhesion molecules E-Selectin, L-Selectin, and P-Selectin. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, from inception to July 2021. Risk of bias and certainty of evidence were assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist and GRADE, respectively. In 61 studies, statins significantly reduced P-selectin (standard mean difference, SMD = -0.39, 95% CI -0.55 to -0.22, p < 0.001; moderate certainty of evidence), L-selectin (SMD = -0.49, 95% CI -0.89 to -0.10, p = 0.014; very low certainty of evidence), and E-Selectin (SMD = -0.73, 95% CI -1.02 to -0.43, p < 0.001; moderate certainty of evidence), independently of baseline lipid profile and other study and patient characteristics. The corresponding pooled SMD values in sensitivity analysis were not substantially altered when individual studies were sequentially removed. Simvastatin had a significant lowering effect on both P-selectin and E-selectin. Therefore, statins significantly reduce circulating selectins. Further studies are required to investigate whether selectin lowering mediates cardiovascular risk reduction with these agents. (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42021282778).

Transient Reduction of FMD-Response and L-Arginine Accompanied by Increased Levels of E-Selectin, VCAM, and ICAM after Prolonged Strenuous Exercise

We assessed endothelial function by flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), levels of the NO-precursor L-arginine, and markers of endothelial inflammation before, at the finish line, and one week after the Norseman Xtreme triathlon. The race is an Ironman distance triathlon with a total elevation of 5200 m. Nine male participants were included. They completed the race in 14.5 (13.4–15.3) h. FMD was significantly reduced to 3.1 (2.1–5.0)% dilatation compared to 8.7 (8.2–9.3)% dilatation before the race (p < 0.05) and was normalized one week after the race. L-arginine showed significantly reduced levels at the finish line (p < 0.05) but was normalized one week after the race. Markers of endothelial inflammation E-Selectin, VCAM-1, and ICAM-1 all showed a pattern with increased values at the finish line compared to before the race (all p < 0.05), with normalization one week after the race. In conclusion, we found acutely reduced FMD with reduced L-arginine levels and increased E-Selectin, VCAM-1, and ICAM-1 immediately after the Norseman Xtreme triathlon. Our findings indicate a transient reduced endothelial function, measured by the FMD-response, after prolonged strenuous exercise that could be explained by reduced NO-precursor L-arginine levels and increased endothelial inflammation.

Vascular Metabolism as Driver of Atherosclerosis: Linking Endothelial Metabolism to Inflammation

The endothelium is a crucial regulator of vascular homeostasis by controlling barrier integrity as well acting as an important signal transducer, thereby illustrating that endothelial cells are not inert cells. In the context of atherosclerosis, this barrier function is impaired and endothelial cells become activated, resulting in the upregulation of adhesion molecules, secretion of cytokines and chemokines and internalization of integrins. Finally, this leads to increased vessel permeability, thereby facilitating leukocyte extravasation as well as fostering a pro-inflammatory environment. Additionally, activated endothelial cells can form migrating tip cells and proliferative stalk cells, resulting in the formation of new blood vessels. Emerging evidence has accumulated indicating that cellular metabolism is crucial in fueling these pro-atherosclerotic processes, including neovascularization and inflammation, thereby contributing to plaque progression and altering plaque stability. Therefore, further research is necessary to unravel the complex mechanisms underlying endothelial cell metabolic changes, and exploit this knowledge for finding and developing potential future therapeutic strategies. In this review we discuss the metabolic alterations endothelial cells undergo in the context of inflammation and atherosclerosis and how this relates to changes in endothelial functioning. Finally, we will describe several metabolic targets that are currently being used for therapeutic interventions.

Hypothesized mechanisms explaining poor prognosis in type 2 diabetes patients with COVID-19: a review

PURPOSE

Epidemiological data suggest that comorbid patients, mostly those with type 2 diabetes (T2D), are predisposed to poor prognosis in Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), leading to serious healthcare concerns. The aim of the present manuscript is to review the main relevant mechanisms possibly contributing to worsen the clinical course of COVID-19 in T2D.

RESULTS

Poor glucose control, high glycaemic variability and diabetes-related comorbidities at baseline, particularly cardiovascular diseases and obesity, contribute in worsening the prognosis in the above-mentioned cluster of patients. Moreover, both a lower efficient innate immune system response and cytokine dysregulation predispose patients with T2D to impaired viral clearance and more serious pulmonary and systemic inflammation once the SARS-CoV-2 infection occurred. Inconclusive data are currently available for specifically indicate or contraindicate concurrent medications for managing T2D and its comorbidities in infected patients.

CONCLUSIONS

T2D individuals should be considered as more vulnerable to COVID-19 than general population, and thus require adequate advices about hygienic tips to protect themselves during the pandemic. A careful management of glucose levels and diabetes-related comorbidities remains essential for avoiding further complications, and patient monitoring during the pandemic should be performed also at distance by means of telemedicine. Further studies are needed to clarify whether medications normally used for managing T2D and its associated comorbidities could have a protective or detrimental effect on COVID-19 clinical course.

Novel Strategies to Combat CMV-Related Cardiovascular Disease

Cytomegalovirus (CMV), a ubiquitous human pathogen that is never cleared from the host, has long been thought to be relatively innocuous in immunocompetent adults, but causes severe complications including blindness, end-organ disease, and death in newborns and in immuno-compromised individuals, such as organ transplant recipients and those suffering from AIDS. Yet even in persons with intact immunity, CMV infection is associated with profound stimulation of immune and inflammatory pathways. Carriers of CMV infection also have an elevated risk of developing cardiovascular complications. In this review, we define the proposed mechanisms of how CMV contributes to cardiovascular disease (CVD), describe current approaches to target CMV, and discuss how these strategies may or may not alleviate cardiovascular complications in those with CMV infection. In addition, we discuss the special situation of CMV coinfection in people with HIV infection receiving antiretroviral therapy, and describe how these 2 viral infections may interact to potentiate CVD in this especially vulnerable population.

Cardiovascular responses to rhythmic handgrip exercise in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction

Although the contribution of noncardiac complications to the pathophysiology of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) have been increasingly recognized, disease-related changes in peripheral vascular control remain poorly understood. We utilized small muscle mass handgrip exercise to concomitantly evaluate exercising muscle blood flow and conduit vessel endothelium-dependent vasodilation in individuals with HFpEF (n = 25) compared with hypertensive controls (HTN) (n = 25). Heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), mean arterial pressure (MAP), brachial artery blood velocity, and brachial artery diameter were assessed during progressive intermittent handgrip (HG) exercise [15-30-45% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)]. Forearm blood flow (FBF) and vascular conductance (FVC) were determined to quantify the peripheral hemodynamic response to HG exercise, and changes in brachial artery diameter were evaluated to assess endothelium-dependent vasodilation. HR, SV, and CO were not different between groups across exercise intensities. However, although FBF was not different between groups at the lowest exercise intensity, FBF was significantly lower (20-40%) in individuals with HFpEF at the two higher exercise intensities (30% MVC: 229 ± 8 versus 274 ± 23 ml/min; 45% MVC: 283 ± 17 versus 399 ± 34 ml/min, HFpEF versus HTN). FVC was not different between groups at 15 and 30% MVC but was ∼20% lower in HFpEF at the highest exercise intensity. Brachial artery diameter increased across exercise intensities in both HFpEF and HTN, with no difference between groups. These findings demonstrate an attenuation in muscle blood flow during exercise in HFpEF in the absence of disease-related changes in central hemodynamics or endothelial function.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The current study identified, for the first time, an attenuation in exercising muscle blood flow during handgrip exercise in individuals with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) compared with overweight individuals with hypertension, two of the most common comorbidities associated with HFpEF. These decrements in exercise hyperemia cannot be attributed to disease-related changes in central hemodynamics or endothelial function, providing additional evidence for disease-related vascular dysregulation, which may be a predominant contributor to exercise intolerance in individuals with HFpEF.

A Systematic Review of WNT Signaling in Endothelial Cell Oligodendrocyte Interactions: Potential Relevance to Cerebral Small Vessel Disease

Key pathological features of cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) include impairment of the blood brain barrier (BBB) and the progression of white matter lesions (WMLs) amongst other structural lesions, leading to the clinical manifestations of cSVD. The function of endothelial cells (ECs) is of major importance to maintain a proper BBB. ECs interact with several cell types to provide structural and functional support to the brain. Oligodendrocytes (OLs) myelinate axons in the central nervous system and are crucial in sustaining the integrity of white matter. The interplay between ECs and OLs and their precursor cells (OPCs) has received limited attention yet seems of relevance for the study of BBB dysfunction and white matter injury in cSVD. Emerging evidence shows a crosstalk between ECs and OPCs/OLs, mediated by signaling through the Wingless and Int-1 (WNT)/β-catenin pathway. As the latter is involved in EC function (e.g., angiogenesis) and oligodendrogenesis, we reviewed the role of WNT/β-catenin signaling for both cell types and performed a systematic search to identify studies describing a WNT-mediated interplay between ECs and OPCs/OLs. Dysregulation of this interaction may limit remyelination of WMLs and render the BBB leaky, thereby initiating a vicious neuroinflammatory cycle. A better understanding of the role of this signaling pathway in EC-OL crosstalk is essential in understanding cSVD development.

Effect of statin therapy on plasma C-type Natriuretic Peptides and Endothelin-1 in males with and without symptomatic coronary artery disease

C-type Natriuretic Peptide (CNP) and Endothelin-1 (ET-1) have reciprocal roles in maintaining vascular homeostasis and are acutely modulated by statins in human cultured endothelial cells. Whether these actions of statins in vitro are reflected in studies in vivo is unknown. In a prospective study of 66 subjects with or without post- acute coronary syndrome (ACS), plasma concentrations of bioactive CNP and bio-inactive aminoterminal proCNP (NTproCNP), ET-1, B-type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) and high sensitivity C Reactive Protein (hsCRP) were measured together with lipids before and at intervals of 1, 2 and 7 days after commencing atorvastatin 40 mg/day - and for a further period of 6months in those with ACS. Plasma lipids fell significantly in all subjects but plasma CNP, NTproCNP and ET-1 were unchanged by atorvastatin. In ACS, baseline hsCRP, BNP and CNP but not NTproCNP or ET-1 were significantly raised compared to values in age-matched controls. The ratio of NTproCNP to CNP was significantly lower in ACS throughout the study and was unaffected by statin therapy. We conclude that conventional doses of atorvastatin do not affect plasma CNP products or ET-1. Elevated CNP after cardiac injury likely results from regulated changes in clearance, not enhanced production.

Statins in the perioperative period

In this review, we discuss clinical evidence-based data regarding the potential benefit of statin therapy in the perioperative period of non-cardiac surgery. Results from meta-analyses of prospective observational studies have provided conflicting evidence. Moreover, comparison among studies is complicated by varying data sources, outcome definitions, types of surgery, and preoperative versus perioperative statin therapy. However, results of two recent large prospective cohort studies showed that statin use on the day of or the day after non-cardiac surgery (or both) is associated with lower 30-day all-cause mortality and reduction in a variety of postoperative complications, predominantly cardiac, compared with non-use during this period. There is a paucity of data from randomized controlled trials assessing the benefit of statin therapy in non-cardiac surgery. No randomized controlled trials have shown that initiating a statin in statin-naïve patients may reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications in non-cardiac surgeries. One randomized clinical trial demonstrated that the use of a preoperative statin in patients with stable coronary heart disease treated with long-term statin therapy had a significant reduction in the incidence of myocardial necrosis and major adverse cardiovascular events after non-cardiac surgery. In conclusion, it is important that all health-care professionals involved in the care of the surgical patient emphasize the need to resume statin therapy, particularly in patients with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. However, initiating a statin in statin-naïve patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery needs more evidence-based data.

Effects of Catheterization on Artery Function and Health: When Should Patients Start Exercising Following Their Coronary Intervention?

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of death worldwide, and percutaneous transluminal coronary angiography (PTCA) and/or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI; angioplasty) are commonly used to diagnose and/or treat the obstructed coronaries. Exercise-based rehabilitation is recommended for all CAD patients; however, most guidelines do not specify when exercise training should commence following PTCA and/or PCI. Catheterization can result in arterial dysfunction and acute injury, and given the fact that exercise, particularly at higher intensities, is associated with elevated inflammatory and oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction and a pro-thrombotic milieu, performing exercise post-PTCA/PCI may transiently elevate the risk of cardiac events. This review aims to summarize extant literature relating to the impacts of coronary interventions on arterial function, including the time-course of recovery and the potential deleterious and/or beneficial impacts of acute versus long-term exercise. The current literature suggests that arterial dysfunction induced by catheterization recovers 4-12 weeks following catheterization. This review proposes that a period of relative arterial vulnerability may exist and exercise during this period may contribute to elevated event susceptibility. We therefore suggest that CAD patients start an exercise training programme between 2 and 4 weeks post-PCI, recognizing that the literature suggest there is a 'grey area' for functional recovery between 2 and 12 weeks post-catheterization. The timing of exercise onset should take into consideration the individual characteristics of patients (age, severity of disease, comorbidities) and the intensity, frequency and duration of the exercise prescription.

Effect of Aggressive lipid-lowering treatment with Rosuvastatin on vascular endoTHelium function: evaluation of vascular endothelium function (EARTH study)

Vascular endothelial dysfunction plays an important role in the process of atherosclerosis up to the final stage of plaque rupture. Vascular endothelial dysfunction is reversible, and can be recovered by medications and life-style changes. Improvement in endothelial function may reduce cardiovascular events and improve long-term prognosis. A total of 50 patients with stable angina and dyslipidemia were enrolled, including patients who had not received prior treatment with statins and had serum LDL-C levels ≥ 100 mg/dL, and patients who had previously received statin treatment. All agreed to register regardless of their LDL-C level. Rosuvastatin was initially administered at a dose of 2.5 mg and appropriately titrated up to the maximum dose of 20 mg or until LDL-C levels lower than 80 mg/dL were achieved, for 24 weeks. Endothelial function was assessed by the reactive hyperemia peripheral arterial tonometry (RH-PAT) index in the radial artery by Endo-PAT^® 2000 (Endo-PAT^®2000, software version 3.0.4, Itamar Medical Ltd., Caesarea, Israel). RH-PAT data were digitally analyzed online by Endo-PAT^®2000 at baseline and at 24 weeks. LDL-C and MDA-LDL-C decreased from 112.6 ± 23.3 to 85.5 ± 20.2 mg/dL and from 135.1 ± 36.4 to 113.9 ± 23.5 mg/dL respectively (p < 0.0001). However, HDL-C, hs-CRP and TG did not change significantly after treatment. RH-PAT index levels significantly improved, from 1.60 ± 0.31 to 1.77 ± 0.57 (p = 0.04) after treatment, and the percent change of the RH-PAT index was 12.8 ± 36.9%. Results of multivariate analysis show that serum LDL-C levels over 24 weeks did not act as a predictor of improvement of the RH-PAT index. However, HbA1c at baseline was an independent predictor which influenced the 24-week RH-PAT index level. The RH-PAT index of patients with high HbA1c at baseline did not improve after administration of rosuvastatin but it did improve in patients with low HbA1c at baseline. Efficacy of functional foods mixture in improving hypercholesterolemia, inflammatory and endothelial dysfunction biomarkers-induced by high cholesterol diet

Background

Hypercholesterolemia associated with cardiovascular diseases is a global health issue that could be alleviated by functional foods. This study aimed to explore the effects of a high-cholesterol diet on lipid profile, cardiac, inflammatory, and endothelial dysfunction biomarkers, and the possible improvement by functional foods mixture.

Methods

Male albino rats weighing 100–150 g were randomly divided into four equal groups: 1st control, giving a normal diet; the 2nd received high-cholesterol diet for 8 weeks, the 3rd received the high-cholesterol diet + functional foods mixture, and the 4th administered high-cholesterol diet +atorvastatin (20 mg) orally.

Results

The results showed a significant increase in lipid profile and cardiac biomarkers levels (lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase and homocystein), also inflammatory markers, as, tumor necrotic factor alpha and chronic reactive proteins were elevated, moreover, vascular adhesion molecule-1 and nitric oxide synthase were disturbed in high-cholesterol diet compared with normal group. While administration of atorvastatin and functional foods mixture ameliorated these alterations.

Conclusions

Administration of functional foods mixture and atorvastatin were effective in treating hypercholesterolemia, reduce the risk of inflammation and cardiovascular biomarkers with a high safety margin. These efficiencies may be due to its active ingredient that improve the imbalance in the measured biomarkers.
