Abstract
BACKGROUND Various social determinants of health have been established as significant risk factors for COVID-19 transmission, prevalence, incidence, and mortality. Area deprivation index (ADI, a composite score made up of educational, housing, and poverty markers) is an accepted multidimensional social determinants of health measure. Little is known about how structural social determinants of health before hospitalization, including ADI, may affect mortality related to COVID-19 in critically ill patients. OBJECTIVES To examine the association of ADI with intensive care unit (ICU) mortality in patients with COVID-19 and compare its predictive power with that of clinical factors. METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study of critically ill adults with COVID-19 in 3 hospitals within a single health system. Multivariable logistic regression models (adjusted for demographic and clinical variables) were used to examine the association of ADI with ICU mortality. RESULTS Data from 1784 patients hospitalized from 2020 to 2022 were analyzed. In multivariable models, no association was found between national ADI and ICU mortality. Notable factors associated with ICU mortality included treatment year, age, van Walraven weighted score, invasive mechanical ventilation, and body mass index. CONCLUSION In this study, clinical factors were more predictive of mortality than ADI and other social determinants of health. The influence of ADI may be most relevant before hospital admission. These findings could serve as a foundation for shaping targeted public health strategies and hospital interventions, enhancing care delivery, and potentially contributing to better outcomes in future pandemics.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated staffing challenges in intensive care units, with increased burnout and moral distress cited as major problems. A healthy work environment is critical to nurses' success and wellbeing. During the pandemic, a survey by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses revealed decreased composite scores in each of the 6 critical elements of a healthy work environment. Hospital units that improved even 1 critical element reported higher job satisfaction. The use of telehealth tools by expert nurses expanded care delivery during the pandemic by improving response to acutely and critically ill patients while supporting hospital-based nurses. All of the critical elements of a healthy work environment are relevant to the tele-critical care nurse's role and challenges. This article describes how tele-critical care nurses were affected by the pandemic and how healthy work environment strategies promoted successful nurse and patient outcomes.

Abstract
Objective High-quality healthcare services is delivered by teams rather than individuals and depends heavily on multidisciplinary cooperation between dispersed healthcare professionals. The aim of this scoping review is to identify common barriers and innovative applications of technology supporting team processes and patient safety, in geographically dispersed healthcare services. Methods Studies were identified from searches in APA PsychINFO, Epistemonikos and Medline databases, from 2010 to 2023. A detailed search strategy was performed, and studies were included, based on prior established criteria. Results Among the 19 studies that fulfilled our inclusion criteria, the majority (85%) were from Europe or North America, and most studies (53%) were quantitative, with a cross-sectional study design. Several reported observed distributed team processes in training and education. Most studies described barriers and detailed how innovative approaches and technological solutions were introduced to improve communication, coordination, and shared mental models in distributed healthcare settings. A small proportion of studies (16%) used health services data to examine interpersonal exchange and team processes. Conclusion The scoping review offer recommendations to enhance future research on distributed team processes in healthcare services.

Abstract
Critical care practice has been embodied in the healthcare system since the institutionalization of intensive care units (ICUs) in the late '50s. Over time, this sector has experienced many changes and improvements in providing immediate and dedicated healthcare as patients requiring intensive care are often frail and critically ill with high mortality and morbidity rates. These changes were aided by innovations in diagnostic, therapeutic, and monitoring technologies, as well as the implementation of evidence-based guidelines and organizational structures within the ICU. In this review, we examine these changes in intensive care management over the past 40 years and their impact on the quality of care available to patients. Moreover, the current state of intensive care management is characterized by a multidisciplinary approach and the use of innovative technologies and research databases. Advancements such as telecritical care and artificial intelligence are being increasingly explored, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, to reduce the length of hospitalization and ICU mortality. With these advancements in intensive care and ever-changing patient needs, critical care experts, hospital managers, and policymakers must also explore appropriate organizational structures and future enhancements within the ICU.

Abstract
A long-standing shortage of critical care intensivists and nurses, exacerbated by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, has led to an accelerated adoption of tele-critical care in the United States (US). Due to their complex and high-acuity nature, cardiac, cardiovascular, and cardiothoracic intensive care units (ICUs) have generally been limited in their ability to leverage tele-critical care resources. In early 2020, Houston Methodist Hospital (HMH) launched its tele-critical care program called Virtual ICU, or vICU, to improve its ICU staffing efficiency while providing high-quality, continuous access to in-person and virtual intensivists and critical care nurses. This article provides a roadmap with prescriptive specifications for planning, launching, and integrating vICU services within cardiac and cardiovascular ICUs-one of the first such integrations among the leading academic US hospitals. The success of integrating vICU depends upon the (1) recruitment of intensivists and RNs with expertise in managing cardiac and cardiovascular patients on the vICU staff as well as concerted efforts to promote mutual trust and confidence between in-person and virtual providers, (2) consultations with the bedside clinicians to secure their buy-in on the merits of vICU resources, and (3) collaborative approaches to improve workflow protocols and communications. Integration of vICU has resulted in the reduction of monthly night-call requirements for the in-person intensivists and an increase in work satisfaction. Data also show that support of the vICU is associated with a significant reduction in the rate of Code Blue events (denoting a situation where a patient requires immediate resuscitation, typically due to a cardiac or respiratory arrest). As the providers become more comfortable with the advances in artificial intelligence and big data-driven technology, the Cardiac ICU Cohort continues to improve methods to predict and track patient trends in the ICUs.
