Translation and psychometric properties of the Persian version of self-management of type 1 diabetes for adolescents

Developing a questionnaire for diabetes mellitus type 2 risk effects and precondition factors – multivariate statistical paths

The primary purpose of the present study is to summarize and explain the results of a questionnaire about diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMT2) endangered individuals. The 275 participants (age between 21 and 76 years) answered 18 questions related to the possible danger of DMT2 disorder. Multivariate statistical methods – cluster analysis, factor and principal components analysis applied for the survey analysis. The final goal was to detect similarity patterns between the variables of interest (questions), to reveal hidden factors regulating the data structure and susceptibility to DMT2 among the participants or between them, to elucidate the health status of the different groups and the similarities within the groups. It was found that five hidden factors regulate the data structure, which are conditionally named “declined general health status”; “metabolic syndrome factor”; “smoking, alcohol abuse and stress factor”; “heredity and sex impact”; “healthy food” impact. The participants could be divided into four similarity patterns, each with probably different susceptibility to DMT2. Thus, the results of the questionnaire could be of use for prophylactic purposes.

Promoting self-management behaviors in adolescents with type 1 diabetes, using digital storytelling: a pilot randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to assess the effects of digital storytelling on the self-management behavior of adolescents with type 1 diabetes (TID).

METHODS

In this pilot randomized controlled clinical trial, 60 adolescents with TID were randomly allocated into two parallel groups: intervention (training with digital storytelling method, n = 33) or control (training with a conventional method, n = 33). The primary outcome was assessing the Self-Management behavior of adolescents with TID (SMOD-A) at baseline and three months after the intervention.

RESULTS

The results revealed that digital storytelling could significantly improve self-management behaviors amongst adolescents with TID (P = 0.005). In contrast, in the control group, no significant changes were observed (P > 0.05). Furthermore, the mean score of Collaboration with Parents subscale was significantly higher in the digital storytelling group than in the control group after the intervention (p = 0.022). The results also showed that the level of Collaboration With Parents' subscale scores had a meaningful reverse relationship with the adolescent age after digital storytelling (p = 0.048). Repeated measures ANOVAs showed that there were significant main effects of time and group on collaboration with parents(p = 0.002) and goal subscales (p = 0.035). With respect to HbA1c levels, significant changes were not observed in any of the groups (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Digital storytelling is practicable and a potentially beneficial training modality for adolescents with TID.

Validation of a diabetes knowledge test for Indian children, adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus

INTRODUCTION

Diabetes knowledge has a large impact on glycemic control. There is a pressing need for creation of validated tests of knowledge for different ethnic groups.

OBJECTIVE

To create and validate a diabetes knowledge test (DKT) for young Indians with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).

METHODS

We created a 34 item Hindi language DKT, with basic (19-questions) and advanced (15-questions) components. It was administered to 77 consecutive patients who had previously received in-hospital diabetes education. We hypothesized that the test scores would be higher for patients residing in urban regions, for patients with higher maternal education, and those with lower HbA1c. Cronbach's alpha (α) was used to calculate the test reliability.

RESULTS

The DKT score was significantly higher in families with higher (>class 12th) maternal formal education compared with lower [70.0 (95% C.I. 67.2-73.5) vs 54.2 (95% C.I. 44.0-57.3), p<0.001] and urban residence compared with rural [68.5 (95% C.I. 63.4-70.6) vs 54.5 (95% C.I. 42.5-61.7), p<0.001]. It had negative correlation with HbA1c (r=-0.268, p=0.019). The Cronbach's α was 0.87 for the entire test, and for the basic and advanced components was 0.78 and 0.74 respectively.

CONCLUSION

The DKT India is a valid and reliable instrument to evaluate diabetes knowledge in Hindi speaking Indian children, adolescents and young adults with T1DM.
