Comparison of the Shear Bond Strength of Silorane-Based Composite Resin and Methacrylate Based Composite Resin to MTA

Post-Space Disinfectants With Sodium Hypochlorite and Methylene Blue Loaded in Silver and Quartz Nanoparticles Activated by Photodynamic Therapy. A SEM Analysis

Post-space disinfectants methylene blue loaded with silver (Ag) and Quartz nanoparticles (NPs) and MB alone activated by photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the survival of Enterococcus faecalis, smear layer (SL) removal efficacy, and extrusion bond strength (EBS) of fiber posts to canal dentin. Hundred mandibular premolars underwent root canal treatment using the rotary ProTaper system. The canals were obturated and post-space was prepared up to a length of 8 mm, maintaining a 5 mm seal. To assess antibacterial efficacy E. faecalis were inoculated in the canal (n = 20). The samples were then randomly allocated into four groups according to the canal disinfectant used to sterilize the canals. Group 1: 2.5% NaOCl+17% EDTA, Group 2: MB-PDT, Group 3: MB@QP-PDT, and Group 4: MB@AgNP-PDT (n = 25). SEM analysis was conducted on five samples from each disinfectant group to assess the removal of the SL. Survival rates were calculated (n = 5 from each group). Glass fiber post (GFP) was cemented to the root dentin of the remaining samples followed by artificial aging. Sectioning of the specimens was performed in all three-thirds of the canals. PBS was assessed followed by failure evaluation. ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test were used to compare the E. faecalis survival rate and PBS of fiber post among different investigated groups. Group 4 (MB@AgNP-PDT) treated canals exhibited the minimum survival rate (0.30 ± 0.04 CFU/mL) of E. faecalis and maximum PBS. However, the highest survival rate and minimum bond strength of GFP were observed in Group 1 (NaOCl+17% EDTA) and Group 2 (MB-PDT) treated teeth respectively. The highest SL removal was recorded in the coronal section of the samples of Group-4 disinfected with MB@AgNP-PDT. The lowest removal of SL was recorded in Group 2 samples sterilized with MB-PDT at apical one-third. Silver nanoparticles when utilized as nano-carriers to enhance the efficiency of MB activated by PDT, have been shown to exhibit the highest antimicrobial potency, improved capacity for SL removal and improved PBS.

Can flowable short-fiber-reinforced resins achieve a strong adhesion to bioceramics?

This study compared the microshear bond strength (μSBS) of four calcium silicate-based cements (CSCs), TheraCal PT (TPT), TheraCal LC (TLC), Biodentine (BD), and Dia-Root Bio MTA (DR), with a short fiber-reinforced composite resin (SFRC). Forty cylindrical acrylic blocks were used, each with a center hole (diameter 5 mm, depth 2 mm). CSCs were placed in the holes (n = 10/group), and the blocks were incubated for 48 h. G-Premio BOND, a self-etching adhesive, was applied to the CSCs surfaces using a micro-applicator for 10 s and then air-dried for 5 s, followed by light curing for 20 s. SFRC materials placed in cylindrical polyethylene capsules (diameter 2 mm, height 2 mm) were polymerized for 20 s and placed over the CSCs. The samples were then incubated at 37°C and 100% humidity for 24 h, and their μSBSs were tested using an "Instron Universal Testing Machine." Data were statistically analyzed using chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Statistically significant differences were observed between the tested CSCs. The μSBS of TPT (45.17 ± 4.56 MPa) was significantly higher (p < .05) than that of the other materials: BD, TLC, and DR had μSBSs of 29.18 ± 2.86 MPa (p < .05), 23.86 ± 2.84 MPa (p > .05), and 18.08 ± 2.69 MPa (p < .05), respectively. Considering the importance of bond strength for CSC sealing with restorative material, using SFRC over CSC was promising for improving the μSBS, adhesion, and sealing of the material. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Adhesion is critical to the success of vital pulp restorations. To achieve strong adhesion, the bioceramic material and the resin composite to which it is bonded are very important. In our study, short fiber-reinforced composite resin, which is gaining popularity, was used and found to be a promising material for improved adhesion.

Carbon nanotube-modified adhesive to caries affected dentin conditioned with Nd: YAP laser, phosphoric acid, and photoactivated-erythrosine

AIM

Dentin conditioned with phosphoric acid (PA) Nd: YAP laser, and photoactivated-Ery(Erythrosine) on microleakage, shear bond strength (SBS) degree of conversion (DC), and rheological assessment of adhesive-infused with carbon nanotubes (CNTs).

MATERIAL AND METHOD

Carious ninety-six human mandibular molars were included. Specimens were disinfected and allocated into three groups based on surface pretreatment (n = 32) Group 1 (PA), Group 2 (Nd: YAP) laser, and Group 3 (Photoactivated-Ery). Conditioned groups were further divided into two 2 subgroups based on the application of unmodified ERA and CNTs-modified ERA. Composite restorations were placed on the CAD surface and thermal aging of the samples was performed. The microleakage assessment was conducted using a dye penetration test. Universal testing machine (UTM) assessed SBS bond failure was evaluated using a stereomicroscope. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses of CNT, and Fourier Transform Infrared FTIR of adhesives were performed. One-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc analyzed the outcomes.

RESULTS

Group 1B samples (PA+ CNTs modified adhesive) presented the minimum marginal leakage and highest bond integrity. Group 2A (Nd:YAP laser+Unmodified adhesive) displayed the maximum scores of microleakage and lowest bond strength.

CONCLUSION

Photoactivated Ery-PS can serve as an alternative to phosphoric acid for conditioning CAD. Incorporating CNT in adhesive significantly enhanced bond integrity and marginal seal with no significant difference in DC.

Micro shear bond strength of mineral trioxide aggregate to different innovative dental restorative materials

The objective of this in vitro study was to investigate the micro shear bond strength (µSBS) of mineral trioxide aggregate to four different restorative materials. Sixty mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) samples were randomly assigned into four experimental groups based on the restorative materials used: nanohybrid resin composite as a control, giomer, alkasite and ormocer. µSBS samples were prepared for each group (n = 15). These samples were then submitted to a µSBS test (crosshead speed, 0.5 mm/min). The resulting data were statistically analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Levene, and Bonferroni tests (α = 0.05). The bond strength of the alkasite group was statistically significantly higher than all the tested groups (p<0.05), while there were no significant differences between the nanohybrid resin composite, giomer, or ormocer groups (p > 0.05). Within the limitations of this study, alkasite restorative material could be a promising material when placed over MTA.

Effect of Bioinductive Cavity Liners on Shear Bond Strength of Dental Composite to Dentin

Background

The aim of the current study was to evaluate and compare the influence of Dycal, Lime-Lite, TheraCal LC, Biodentine, resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC), and Activa BioActive as the pulp capping material on the shear bond strength of resin composite to dentin.

Methods

A total of 70 extracted caries-free molars were randomly assigned to seven groups. Six test groups were covered with various protective liners: Dycal, TheraCal LC, Lime-Lite, Activa BioActive, Biodentine, and RMGIC. The control group received no liner pretreatment. Each sample was bonded to resin composite using the total-etch Tetric N bond adhesive. The samples were then tested for shear bond strength using the universal testing machine at a cross-head speed of 1 mm/min until bond failure occurred. The data were analyzed using the one-way ANOVA test followed by the Tamhane post hoc test for pairwise comparisons of the groups.

Results

Independent of the type of the applied liner, all groups exhibited inferior SBS to dentin compared to the control group. TheraCal and RMGIC showed significantly higher shear bond strength than Biodentine and Dycal, which showed the lowest shear bond strength. Lime-Lite and Activa also had significantly lower SBS results than TheraCal. The mode of fracture was predominantly cohesive in Dycal, Biodentine, and TheraCal and adhesive in Activa.

Conclusion

This present study concludes that the bond strength of resin composite to dentin can be affected differently using various types of liners.

Comparative evaluation of the bond strength of self-adhering and bulk-fill flowable composites to MTA Plus, Dycal, Biodentine, and TheraCal: an in vitro study

Objectives

This study aimed to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of a self-adhering flowable composite (Dyad Flow) and a bulk-fill flowable composite (Smart Dentin Replacement [SDR]) to several pulp-capping materials, including MTA Plus, Dycal, Biodentine, and TheraCal.

Materials and Methods

Eighty acrylic blocks with 2-mm-deep central holes that were 4 mm in diameter were prepared and divided into 2 groups (n = 40 each) according to the composite used (Dyad Flow or SDR). They were further divided into 4 sub-groups (n = 10 each) according to the pulp-capping agent used. SBS was tested using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Data were analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance. A p value of < 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance.

Results

A statistically significant difference (p = 0.040) was found between Dyad Flow and SDR in terms of bond strength to MTA Plus, Dycal, Biodentine, and TheraCal.

Conclusions

Among the 8 sub-groups, the combination of TheraCal and SDR exhibited the highest SBS.

Investigating the effect of G-Bond and Z-PRIME Plus on the bond strength between prefabricated zirconia posts and the root canal wall in vitro

Background. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of G-Bond and Z-PRIME Plus on the bond strength between prefabricated zirconia posts and the root canal wall.

Methods. The study was carried out on 21 premolar teeth with similar conditions. The samples were cut at the CEJ. After root canal treatment of the roots, the post space was prepared up to a length of 10mm. The samples were randomly assigned to two groups of 10. G-Bond was used in one group and Z-PRIME Plus in the other to prepare the posts’ surfaces. After cementation and mounting the samples in polyester, the post was cut from the apical area into three equal sections. The bond strength of the samples was tested using the push-out test on a universal testing machine. Data wereanalyzed using t-test.

Results. The meanpush-out bond strengths in the control,G-Bond and Z-PRIME Plus groups were 14.3, 27.6±11.8 and 27.4±13.4N, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (P<0.9). Both methods of surface treatment increased bond strength. The bond strengths were different in different sections such as coronal, middle and apical in each group.

Conclusion. There was no significant differencebetween the G-Bond and Z-PRIME Plus groups and both products in-creased the bond strength of prefabricated zirconia posts.
