Effect of ractopamine and conjugated linoleic acid on performance of late finishing pigs. Animal 2019; 14:277-284. Abstract
The dietary inclusion of feed additives to improve the carcass characteristics of the final product is of great importance for the pork production chain. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of the association of ractopamine (RAC) and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on the performance traits of finishing pigs during the last 26 days prior to slaughter. In total, 810 commercial hybrid barrows were used. Animals were distributed among treatments according to a randomised block design in a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement, with three RAC levels (0, 5 or 10 ppm) and three CLA levels (0, 0.3 or 0.6%). Pigs fed the diet with 5 ppm RAC had higher average daily feed intake (ADFI) (2.83 kg; P < 0.05) when compared with those fed 10 ppm RAC and the control diet (2.75 and 2.74 kg, respectively). Lower ADFI values (P < 0.01) were observed with the diets containing CLA compared with the control diet with no CLA (2.73 and 2.75 v. 2.85 kg/day, respectively). The average daily weight gain of pigs fed 5 and 10 ppm RAC was +148 and +173 g/dayhigher (P < 0.001), respectively, than those fed the control diet. Dietary RAC levels influenced (P < 0.001) feed conversion ratio (FCR), which was reduced as RAC levels increased, with the pigs fed 10, 5 and 0 ppm RAC presenting FCR values of 2.57, 2.71 and 3.05, respectively. FCR also improved (P < 0.05) with the inclusion of 0.6% CLA relative to the control diet (2.70 v. 2.84, respectively). There was a significant interaction between CLA × RAC levels (P < 0.01) for final BW, loin eye area (LEA) (P < 0.05) and backfat thickness (BT) (P < 0.05). The treatments containing 10 ppm RAC + 0.6% or 0.3% CLA increased LEA and reduced BT. In conclusion, the level of 10 ppm inclusion of RAC increased the overall performance parameters of pigs and therefore improved production efficiency. The combined use of RAC and CLA promoted a lower feed conversion ratio as well as better quantitative carcass traits, as demonstrated by the higher LEA and lower BT. The dietary inclusion of CLA at 0.3% improved feed efficiency, however, without affecting LEA or BT yields.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to determine the digestible-lysine (Lys) requirement in diets supplemented or not with ractopamine (RAC), so as to maximise performance and carcass characteristics for finishing barrows reared at thermoneutral conditions. In total, 128 high-lean commercial hybrid barrows with an initial bodyweight of 78.2 ± 4.3 kg were distributed in a completely randomised block design, in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement (four Lys concentrations: 0.730%, 0.830%, 0.930% and 1.030% and two RAC inclusions: 0 and 10 mg/kg), with two animals per pen and eight pens per treatment. Lys concentrations tested significantly (P < 0.05) affected digestible-lysine intake, and the absolute (g) and relative (%) lean meat content, regardless of RAC inclusion. When diets were RAC-supplemented, feed conversion rate of animals was improved and, in addition, final bodyweight, daily bodyweight gain, loin eye area, loin eye depth, and absolute (g) and relative (%) carcass lean meat content increased (P < 0.05). RAC inclusion also decreased (P < 0.05) backfat thickness and the colour values a* and b* of finishing pigs. Therefore, on the basis of our results, it can be inferred that the best performance and carcass characteristics for finishing barrows reared at thermoneutral conditions were obtained at 1.030% and 0.730% Lys respectively, corresponding to an estimated daily Lys intake of 34.3 g and 24.2 g, independently of the diet RAC concentration.

Abstract
The effect of ractopamine (RAC) supplementation on growth, carcass, and meat quality traits of finishing pigs was studied using a meta-analytical approach. The database was composed of 57 studies published from 2004 to 2016. The dependent variables extracted for the meta-analysis included final BW, ADG, ADFI, feed:gain ratio, HCW, dressing percentage, carcass length, lean yield, back fat thickness, loin muscle area, loin depth, postmortem pH, meat brightness, redness, and yellowness. The studies were grouped by similarity in 3 clusters (C1, C2, and C3) by hierarchical clustering on principle components. The main differences observed between clusters were those of animal initial weight, which increased from C1 through C3. Linear mixed models were used to analyze the data, where studies were assumed as random effect, whereas the total amount of RAC in the diet, cluster, and sex category were considered fixed effects. The interactions between cluster and sex category (barrows, gilts, and mixed sex) and RAC level were also evaluated. Dietary RAC was effective in improving final weight ( < 0.0001), ADG ( < 0.0001), and feed:gain ratio ( < 0.0001) and had a positive effect on HCW ( < 0.0001), lean yield ( = 0.0081), loin muscle area ( = 0.0190), and loin depth ( < 0.0001). In addition, a relatively limited effect on pork quality was observed in the current study. The RAC supplementation was more effective, mainly when pigs started supplementation with higher initial weight, although different responses were observed according to sex category ( < 0.05). There is ample indication that growth and carcass traits could be improved by dietary RAC supplementation. Ractopamine supplementation did not influence the pork quality.

Abstract
Betaine is an osmolyte that helps to maintain water homeostasis and cell integrity, which is essential during heat stress. We hypothesized that supplemental betaine can improve growth during heat stress and may further improve the response to ractopamine. Two studies were conducted to determine: 1) the effects of betaine in combination with ractopamine; and 2) the optimum betaine level for late finishing pigs during heat stress. Heat stress was imposed by gradually increasing temperatures over 10 d to the target high temperature of 32°C. In Exp. 1, pigs ( = 1477, BW = 91.6 ± 3 kg) were assigned within BW blocks and sex to 1 of 4 diets arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial RCB design (68 pens; 20 to 23 pigs/pen). Treatments consisted of diets without or with ractopamine (5 mg/kg for 21 d followed by 8.8 mg/kg to market) and each were supplemented with either 0 or 0.2% of betaine. Betaine reduced ( ≤ 0.05) BW (123.1 vs. 124.3 kg), ADG (0.780 vs. 0.833 kg/d), and ADFI (2.800 vs. 2.918 kg/d), but did not impact carcass characteristics. Ractopamine increased ( < 0.01) BW (125.5 vs. 121.9 kg), ADG (0.833 vs. 0.769 kg/d), G:F (0.295 vs. 0.265), HCW (94.1 vs. 90.0 kg), carcass yield (74.8 vs. 73.8%), loin depth (63.6 vs. 60.0 mm), and predicted lean percentage (53.2 vs. 51.7%) and reduced ADFI (2.822 vs. 2.896 kg/d, = 0.033) and backfat depth ( < 0.001; 20.2 vs. 22.5 mm). In Exp. 2, pigs ( = 2193, BW = 95.5 ± 3.5 kg) were allocated within BW blocks and sex to 1 of 5 treatments in a RCB design (100 pens; 20 to 24 pigs/pen). Treatments consisted of diets with 0, 0.0625, 0.125, 0.1875% of betaine, and a positive control diet with ractopamine, but not betaine. Betaine tended to decrease carcass yield quadratically ( = 0.076; 74.1, 73.5, 73.8, and 73.9 for 0, 0.0625, 0.125, 0.1875% of betaine, respectively), but did not impact other responses. Ractopamine improved ( < 0.001) BW (121.6 vs. 118.5 kg), G:F (0.334 vs. 0.295), carcass yield (74.7 vs. 73.8%), loin depth (61.7 vs. 59.0 mm), and predicted lean percentage (53.2 vs. 52.6%), and reduced backfat (18.7 vs. 20.4 mm). Collectively, data indicate that under commercial conditions, betaine did not improve performance of pigs housed under high ambient temperatures, regardless of ractopamine inclusion. Ractopamine improved whole-body growth and especially carcass growth of pigs raised under high ambient temperatures. The ability of ractopamine to stimulate growth during heat stress makes it an important production technology.

Abstract
The interaction between dietary balanced protein, ractopamine (RAC) and Improvac (IMP) on the growth response of 120 individually penned male PIC© pigs was evaluated. The pigs entered the trial at 16 weeks of age and were assigned to 12 treatments using a 2×2×3 factorial design. Three balanced protein diets, formulated with standard illeal digestible lysine levels of 7.50 (low), 9.79 (medium) and 12.07 g/kg (high), were fed from 20 weeks. Improvac was administered at 16 and 20 weeks, the booster being given 4 weeks before slaughter. Ractopamine was supplemented at 10 mg/kg to the applicable treatments from 20 weeks. Live weight, backfat depth and food intake were measured on a weekly basis. Primary vaccination had no influence on the parameters measured. Immunocastration, RAC and higher protein diet treatments increased weight gain, but food intake was increased only with the use of IMP. Although weight gain increased in IMP-treated males, the increased feed intake resulted in their feed conversion efficiencies (FCE) being inferior to the intact controls. Feeding RAC only benefitted FCE when a high or medium protein diet was fed. Immunocastrates deposited more backfat after the booster vaccination than did entire males. Thus the cost of using RAC, IMP and of increasing dietary protein content needs to be weighed up against the additional revenue generated through the use of these interventions.

Abstract
Physical and chemical attributes of the Longissimus thoracis (LT) of 96 PIC(©) entire (E) and immunocastrated (C) pigs were evaluated. The study followed a 2 × 2 × 3 factorial design where three diets of low, medium and high proteins (7.50, 9.79 and 12.07 g digestible lysine/kg) were fed either with (10mg/kg) or without ractopamine (RAC) for the last 28 days of growth. Vaccination of C occurred at 16 and 20 weeks and slaughtering at 24 weeks of age. The LTs were analysed for moisture, protein, fat and ash contents as well as CIE L*, a*, b* colour, drip loss, cooking loss and Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF). Various sex and protein interactions were observed for LT protein content, L* values and WBSF. Cooking loss was decreased in C and by the medium protein diet. Feeding RAC increased WBSF values, whilst decreasing a* and b* values. However, the differences observed are minor and might be considered negligible when evaluated by a consumer.

Abstract
Objetivou-se avaliar níveis de lisina digestível em dietas contendo 5 ppm de ractopamina sobre o desempenho e características quantitativas de carcaça de suínos em fase de terminação. Foram utilizados 96 suínos, sendo 48 machos castrados e 48 fêmeas, com peso inicial de 83,57 ± 4,07kg, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com quatro níveis de lisina digestível (0,94; 0,96; 1,02 e 1,04%), com três repetições de oito animais cada. O período experimental teve duração de 28 dias. O consumo de ração diário reduziu e a conversão alimentar melhorou linearmente de acordo com o aumento dos níveis de lisina digestível das dietas. Os pesos final, de frigorífico e de carcaça quente, o rendimento de carcaça, a quantidade de carne magra e o índice de bonificação aumentaram linearmente de acordo com o aumento dos níveis de lisina digestível. Não houve efeito dos níveis de lisina digestível sobre o ganho de peso diário, perda de peso durante o transporte e a porcentagem de carne magra da carcaça. Concluiu-se que, em dietas contendo 5ppm de ractopamina, o nível de 1,04% de lisina digestível melhora a conversão alimentar e aumenta o peso final, o peso e o rendimento de carcaça, a quantidade de carne magra e o índice de bonificação das carcaças dos suínos.

Abstract
Two experiments (384 pigs; C22 × L326; PIC) were conducted to determine the interactive effect of dietary L-carnitine and ractopamine HCl (RAC) on the metabolic response of pigs to handling. Experiments were arranged as split-split plots with handling as the main plot and diets as subplots (4 pens per treatment). Dietary L-carnitine (0 or 50 mg/kg) was fed from 36.0 kg to the end of the experiments (118 kg), and RAC (0 or 20 mg/kg) was fed the last 4 wk of each experiment. At the end of each experiment, 4 pigs per pen were assigned to 1 of 2 handling treatments. Gently handled pigs were moved at a moderate walking pace 3 times through a 50-m course and up and down a 15° loading ramp. Aggressively handled pigs were moved as fast as possible 3 times through the same course, but up and down a 30° ramp, and shocked 3 times with an electrical prod. Blood was collected immediately before and after handling in Exp. 1 and immediately after and 1 h after handling in Exp. 2. Feeding RAC increased (P < 0.01) ADG and G:F, but there was no effect (P > 0.10) of L-carnitine on growth performance. In Exp. 1 and 2, aggressive handling increased (P < 0.01) blood lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), lactate, cortisol, and rectal temperature and decreased blood pH. In Exp. 1, there was a RAC × handling interaction (P < 0.06) for the difference in pre- and posthandling blood pH and rectal temperature. Aggressively handled pigs fed RAC had decreased blood pH and increased rectal temperature compared with gently handled pigs, demonstrating the validity of the handling model. Pigs fed RAC had increased (P < 0.01) LDH compared with pigs not fed RAC. Pigs fed L-carnitine had increased (P < 0.03) lactate compared with pigs not fed L-carnitine. In Exp. 2, pigs fed RAC had lower (P < 0.02) blood pH immediately after handling, but pH returned to control levels by 1 h posthandling. Lactate, LDH, cortisol, and rectal temperature changes from immediately posthandling to 1 h posthandling were not different (P > 0.10) between pigs fed L-carnitine and those fed RAC, indicating that L-carnitine did not decrease recovery time of pigs subjected to aggressive handling. These results suggest that pigs fed 20 mg/kg of RAC are more susceptible to stress when handled aggressively compared with pigs not fed RAC. Dietary L-carnitine fed in combination with RAC did not alleviate the effects of stress. This research emphasizes the importance of using proper animal handling techniques when marketing finishing pigs fed RAC.
