Abstract
OBJECTIVE Increasing state-level cannabis legalization in the United States aims to reduce risks to consumers through regulation but may also lead to more unlicensed retailers and youth access. This study examines how age verification and business practices (eg, pricing, signage, and youth-appealing products) differ by licensing status. METHODS The Cannabis Access and Safety in New York (CASNY) secret shopper study observed 37 dispensaries and smoke shops (5 licensed medical, 7 licensed recreational, 10 unlicensed dispensaries, and 15 smoke shops), randomly selected from 840 outlets across New York City (NYC) in November to December 2023 to audit age verification and other business practices. RESULTS Licensed retailers were significantly more likely to require age verification before store entry (100% vs 10%, P < .01) and purchase (100% vs 48%, P = .01). Unlicensed retailers displayed more cartoon signage (57% vs 0%) and sold youth-appealing products like energy drinks (48% vs 0%), soda (57% vs 0%), and candy (53% vs 0%). Both types of retailers were often near schools (75% and 76%) and offered delivery (58% and 36%) but rarely displayed health warnings (8% and 10%). CONCLUSION In NYC, unlicensed retailers outnumber licensed ones and often engage in practices increasing youth access to cannabis. They infrequently verify age, sell cheaper products, and use youth-friendly marketing. Licensed retailers follow age verification laws but are also often near schools and inconsistent with certificates of analysis provision. Further research is needed on policy impacts on youth cannabis use in deregulated markets.

Abstract
Given the diverse sources of cannabis messaging and potential differential effects, this study examined pro- and anti-cannabis messaging exposure overall and via specific channels in relation to cannabis-related perceptions (social acceptability and harm) and behaviors (use status, intentions and frequency; past-year quit attempts). Multivariable regression analyses of 2023 survey data from 4031 US young adults (Mage = 26.29, 59.4% female, 19.0% Hispanic, 13.5% Black and 13.6% Asian) used independent variables representing overall exposure and via specific sources (stores, online, billboards/posters/flyers, TV/movies/radio, print and direct communication), respectively. Greater pro-cannabis messaging exposure correlated with greater perceived social acceptability, lower perceived harm, past-month use, greater use intentions among those reporting past-month nonuse and more days used and fewer quit attempts among those reporting use. Less anti-cannabis messaging exposure correlated with these outcomes, except intentions. Particularly, influential sources of pro-cannabis messaging were online (associated with perceptions, use status, intentions and frequency) and direct communication (perceptions, use, use frequency and quit attempts), and those of anti-cannabis messaging were online (harm and use intentions), direct communication (acceptability, quit attempts) and stores (perceptions, use and quit attempts). Exposure differed by sociodemographics (e.g. sex, race/ethnicity and education). The impact of digital media and targeted communications overall and stores in communicating cannabis-related risks suggest the need for regulation and monitoring.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Substance use among adolescents and young adults remains a critical public health concern, with patterns shifting dramatically in recent years. This narrative review examines trends in substance use behaviors during and following the COVID-19 pandemic. RECENT FINDINGS Epidemiologic evidence shows declines in the proportion of youth who are using most substances but intensified consumption patterns with rising levels of disorder among adolescents who use substances. This picture may reflect the greater potency, availability and accessibility of substances, vulnerabilities related to poor mental health, minoritization, as well as social factors including pandemic stressors, commercial and regulatory forces - in short, features of the agent (substance), host (person), and environment (context), consistent with a public health formulation. Understanding trends in youth substance use and related problems, especially in the context of contributing factors, is critical for informing clinical care strategies and public health interventions to improve outcomes for youth across diverse populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Studies have demonstrated that people with disabilities are more likely to use cannabis than people without disabilities. However, less is known about novel forms of use, such as cannabis vaping, in this population. We examined the correlates of cannabis vaping among people with disabilities and the association between cannabis vaping and the frequency of cannabis use in any form. METHODS We used data from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to examine the association between disabilities and past-month cannabis vaping, as well as the number of days that cannabis was used in the past month, among US adults. We used weighted multivariable logistic and modified Poisson regression models with incidence rate ratios to examine the associations. RESULTS The prevalence of cannabis vaping was higher among adults with any disability (4.6%) than among adults without disabilities (2.8%); adults with only cognitive disabilities had the highest prevalence (8.2%). Daily nicotine vaping (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 6.04; 95% CI, 4.14-8.80), former cigarette smoking status (AOR = 1.67; 95% CI, 1.25-2.25), and being aged 18-24 years (vs ≥65 y) (AOR = 11.07; 95% CI, 7.05-17.38) were associated with higher odds of cannabis vaping among adults with any disability. Disability status modified the relationship between cigarette smoking and cannabis vaping (P < .001). Additionally, among adults with disabilities, the rate of cannabis-use days was higher among adults who vaped cannabis (adjusted incidence rate ratio = 1.28; 95% CI, 1.19-1.36) than among adults who did not vape cannabis. CONCLUSIONS Among adults with disabilities, nicotine consumption by vaping was associated with cannabis vaping. Our findings highlight the need for interventions that reduce the risk of polysubstance use (ie, nicotine and cannabis) in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Both superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) and cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) may present with abdominal pain, nausea, and emesis - making them difficult to differentiate or determine when they co-occur in adolescents who regularly use cannabis. Here, we present nine cases of CHS co-occurring with SMAS and characterize their clinical courses. METHODS Patients admitted at Children's Hospital of Colorado between January 1, 2015, and March 23, 2023, who had both cannabis use (F12.1-F12.99) and chronic vascular disorders of the intestine (K55.1) on their problem lists were identified from the electronic medical record using ICD 10 codes. Nine met criteria for SMAS and chronic cannabis use. RESULTS Six of nine patients were female. The most common presenting symptoms were nausea (9), vomiting (9), and weight loss (9). Four patients received cannabis cessation support. Patients lost a mean of 6.0 kg, had an average body mass index (BMI) of 15.61 percentile (17.7 kg/m2) and BMI Z-scores of -1.5. Symptoms were present for a mean of 19.6 weeks before diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents who experience nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and weight loss in association with chronic cannabis use and/or SMAS can present with confusing and overlapping symptoms. Our cohort was described as having CHS with co-occurring SMAS on imaging. Although the etiology of weight loss cannot be definitively ascertained, we postulate that the recurring emetic attacks from CHS led to weight loss resulting in SMAS. Improvement in diagnostic criteria for this population as well as cannabis cessation programming may aid in deceasing morbidity from these co-occurring conditions.

Abstract
Cannabis (marijuana) is a leafy plant that has medical, recreational, and other uses. Cannabis is socially accepted and widely used throughout the United States. Though cannabis use is increasingly gaining popularity, studies detail the deleterious effects of chronic cannabis smoking on mental health, as well as the immunosuppressive properties of cannabinoids. Additionally, oral dysbiosis induced by cannabis smoking serves as a novel catalyst for neurological abnormalities, potentially possible through microbial translocation via the oral-brain axis. This review summarizes the effects and link of smoking cannabis on neurological abnormalities, immunity, and oral microbiome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As more states legalize cannabis, studies are needed to understand the potential impacts of recreational cannabis legalization (RCL) on adolescents from the perspective of clinicians who care for them. METHODS This qualitative study characterized clinician perspectives on whether cannabis legalization is associated with changes in adolescents' cannabis use beliefs, behaviors, and consequences. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 32 clinicians in a large healthcare organization from 9/6/2022-12/21/2022. Video-recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS The 32 participants (56.3 % female, mean [SD] age, 45.9 [7.6] years; 65.3 % non-Hispanic White) were from Addiction Medicine (n = 13), Psychiatry/Mental Health (n = 7), Pediatrics (n = 5), and the Emergency Department (n = 7). Clinicians described post-RCL increases in adolescent cannabis use, use of non-combustible modes and high-potency products, and younger age of first use. Clinicians reported social, physical, and policy changes, including changes in social norms, appealing advertisements, marketing, and easier access. Many noted fewer perceived harms among adolescents and greater self-medication post-RCL. They described how RCL contributed to increased parental cannabis use and permissiveness around adolescent use. Finally, many described post-RCL increases in cannabis hyperemesis syndrome, and several noted increased cannabis-related psychosis and acute intoxication, and decreased court-mandated treatment. CONCLUSIONS Clinicians from diverse specialties described post-RCL increases in adolescent cannabis use and cannabis-related consequences, alongside changes in social norms, access, marketing and advertisements, and decreased perceptions of harms. Findings can inform strategies to support adolescents in the context of increased cannabis availability and acceptability post-legalization and support the development of hypotheses for broader-scale quantitative work.

Methods: In Spring 2022, coders collected and analyzed data regarding retailer characteristics, age verification, and marketing strategies (e.g., product availability, health-related content, promotions, website imagery) among 195 cannabis retail websites in five U.S. cities (Denver, Colorado; Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; Las Vegas, Nevada; Los Angeles, California). Descriptive analyses characterized the websites overall and across cities. Results: Overall, 80.5% verified age for website entry, and 92.8% offered online purchases (92.3% of retailers in Seattle, where prohibited). Of these, 82.9% required age verification for purchases, and 30.9% offered delivery. Almost all (>92%) offered flower/bud, concentrates, edibles, vaping devices, topicals, and tinctures. Health warnings were displayed on 38.3% of websites. Although all five states required health warnings regarding use during pregnancy, only 10.3% had these warnings. In addition, 59.0% posted some unsubstantiated health claims, most often indicating physical and mental health benefits (44.6%). Although Colorado, Washington, and Oregon prohibit health claims, 51.2-53.8% of these retailers posted them. Discounts, samples, or promotions were present on 90.8% of websites; 63.6% had subscription/membership programs. Subpopulations represented in website content included the following: 27.2% teens/young adults, 26.2% veterans, 7.2% sexual/gender minorities, and 5.6% racial/ethnic minorities. Imagery also targeted young people (e.g., 29.7% party/cool/popularity, 18.5% celebrity/influencer endorsement). Conclusions: Regulatory efforts are needed to better monitor promotional strategies and regulatory compliance (e.g., health claims, youth-oriented content, underage access) among online cannabis retailers.

Abstract
Objectives Given the evolving cannabis marketplace (e.g., products, marketing strategies), this study examined online cannabis marketing practices over time. Methods In 2022 and 2023, researchers assessed website content (e.g., age verification, sales, delivery, warnings, ad content, promotional strategies) among 175 randomly-selected cannabis retailers' websites across 5 US cities (Denver, Colorado; Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; Las Vegas, Nevada; Los Angeles [LA], California, n=∼35/city). Analyses compared data from 2022 vs. 2023 and considered regulatory factors across cities. Results Similar to 2022, in 2023, 76.6 % required age verification for site entry, 85.1 % used social media promotion, and 90.9 % offered online sales (82.4 % of which required age verification and 34.6 % offered delivery). There were significant (p < .05) decreases from 2022 to 2023 in the proportions indicating medical card requirements (27.4 % to 15.4 %), purchase limits (59.4 % to 47.4 %), health warnings (38.9 % to 29.7 %), health benefits (60 % to 47.4 %), and discounts/price promotions (92.6 % to 86.3 %). In 2023, proportions differed across cities in ways reflecting whether state/local law allowed online sales (>90 % in Denver, Las Vegas, LA), allowed discounts/price promotions (100 % in Denver and Las Vegas), or required health warnings (48-60 % in Seattle and LA vs. < 20 % elsewhere). Despite all sites prohibiting youth-oriented content and all but Denver and Las Vegas prohibiting health claims, 30.3 % posted content targeting youth/young adults (LA = 8.1 % to Denver = 74.2 %) and 47.4 % health claims (Seattle = 27.0 % to Denver = 71.0 %). Conclusions Online cannabis retail presents risks for access and appeal to minors, emphasizes health benefits, and uses price promotions, regardless of restrictions, indicating need for greater regulatory efforts.

Abstract
Background Early use of alcohol and cannabis is associated with health and social problems. It is unclear how lifetime use changes for each additional year of age during adolescence, and whether this change varies by sex and race/ethnicity. This study characterized lifetime rates of alcohol and cannabis use by age among 12- to 17-year-old American youth and explored differential patterns by sex and race/ethnicity. Methods Data were obtained from the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Analyses were restricted to 12-17-year-olds who were non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, or Hispanic/Latino (n = 11,830). We estimated the increase in lifetime use of alcohol and cannabis by age for the full sample and stratified by sex and race/ethnicity. Slopes of the regression lines were compared to assess differential patterns across groups. Results In these cross-sectional analyses, reported lifetime use increased substantially from age 12 to 17 for alcohol (6.4 % to 53.2 %) and cannabis (1.3 % to 35.9 %). The increase in lifetime alcohol use was slightly, but not significantly, steeper among girls than boys (F1,8 = 3.40, p = 0.09). White and Latino youth showed similar rates of increase in lifetime alcohol use, which was significantly flatter among Black youth (F2,12=21.26, p<0.0001). Latino youth had a slightly, but not significantly, steeper increase in lifetime cannabis use than White and Black youth (F2,12=3.17, p = 0.07). Conclusions Reports of lifetime alcohol and cannabis use substantially increase from age 12 to 17 and the rates are different according to sex and race/ethnicity, highlighting the need for early and tailored substance use prevention in adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies show a dose-response association between cannabis use and the risk of psychosis. This review aimed to determine whether there are identifiable risk-thresholds between the frequency of cannabis use and psychosis development. METHODS Systematic search of Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Web of Science for relevant studies (1 January 2010-26 April 2021). Case-control or cohort studies that investigated the relationship between cannabis use and the risk of psychosis development that reported effect estimates [odds ratios (OR), hazard ratios (HR), risk ratios (RR)] or the raw data to calculate them, with information on the frequency of cannabis consumption were included. Effect estimates were extracted from individual studies and converted to RR. Two-stage dose-response multivariable meta-analytic models were utilized and sensitivity analyses conducted. The Newcastle Ottawa Scale was used to assess the risk of bias of included studies. RESULTS Ten original (three cohorts, seven case-control) studies were included, including 7390 participants with an age range of 12-65 years. Random-effect model meta-analyses showed a significant log-linear dose-response association between cannabis use frequency and psychosis development. A restricted cubic-splines model provided the best fit for the data, with the risk of psychosis significantly increasing for weekly or more frequent cannabis use [RR = 1.01, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.93-1.11 yearly; RR = 1.10, 95% CI 0.97-1.25 monthly; RR = 1.35, 95% CI 1.19-1.52 weekly; RR = 1.76, 95% CI 1.47-2.12 daily]. CONCLUSION Individuals using cannabis frequently are at increased risk of psychosis, with no significant risk associated with less frequent use. Public health prevention messages should convey these risk-thresholds, which should be refined through further work.

Abstract
Introduction Parental monitoring is a key intervention target for adolescent substance use, however this practice is largely supported by causally uninformative cross-sectional or sparse-longitudinal observational research designs. Methods We therefore evaluated relationships between adolescent substance use (assessed weekly) and parental monitoring (assessed every two months) in 670 adolescent twins for two years. This allowed us to assess how individual-level parental monitoring and substance use trajectories were related and, via the twin design, to quantify genetic and environmental contributions to these relationships. Furthermore, we attempted to devise additional measures of parental monitoring by collecting quasi-continuous GPS locations and calculating a) time spent at home between midnight and 5am and b) time spent at school between 8am-3pm. Results ACE-decomposed latent growth models found alcohol and cannabis use increased with age while parental monitoring, time at home, and time at school decreased. Baseline alcohol and cannabis use were correlated (r = .65) and associated with baseline parental monitoring (r = -.24 to -.29) but not with baseline GPS measures (r = -.06 to -.16). Longitudinally, changes in substance use and parental monitoring were not significantly correlated. Geospatial measures were largely unrelated to parental monitoring, though changes in cannabis use and time at home were highly correlated (r = -.53 to -.90), with genetic correlations suggesting their relationship was substantially genetically mediated. Due to power constraints, ACE estimates and biometric correlations were imprecisely estimated. Most of the substance use and parental monitoring phenotypes were substantially heritable, but genetic correlations between them were not significantly different from 0. Discussion Overall, we found developmental changes in each phenotype, baseline correlations between substance use and parental monitoring, co-occurring changes and mutual genetic influences for time at home and cannabis use, and substantial genetic influences on many substance use and parental monitoring phenotypes. However, our geospatial variables were mostly unrelated to parental monitoring, suggesting they poorly measured this construct. Furthermore, though we did not detect evidence of genetic confounding, changes in parental monitoring and substance use were not significantly correlated, suggesting that, at least in community samples of mid-to-late adolescents, the two may not be causally related.

Abstract
Vape shop practices related to age verification and product offerings (e.g., other tobacco, cannabis), which may affect young-adult tobacco/substance use, are likely impacted by state-level policies (i.e., Tobacco 21 [T21], flavored e-cigarette restrictions, non-medical cannabis legalization). Using data from young adults (18-34 years) in 6 US states representing variability in whether/when they implemented the aforementioned policies, this study focused on past 6-month e-cigarette users who visited vape shops (Wave 1 [W1]: September-December 2018, n = 1127; W2: September-December 2019, n = 702; W3: September-December 2020, n = 549). Multilevel modeling examined T21 in relation to participants' reports of age verification at last vape shop visit (among those < 27), and flavor restrictions and cannabis legalization in relation to noticing other tobacco or cannabis products at last visit. At W1-W3, 69.7%, 78.7%, and 75.8% of participants < 27 reported age verification, and participants increasingly noticed other tobacco (W2: 36.9%; W3: 48.6%) and cannabis products (W1: 25.8%; W2: 41.3%; W3: 58.3%). State T21 was unrelated to age verification (aOR = 1.19, 95%CI = 0.80-1.79); flavored e-cigarette restrictions correlated with noticing other tobacco products (aOR = 1.96, 95%CI = 1.10-3.51); flavored e-cigarette restrictions (aOR = 2.26, 95%CI = 1.57-3.24) and cannabis legalization (aOR = 2.84, 95%CI = 1.78-4.51) correlated with noticing cannabis products. Regulatory efforts must be informed by ongoing surveillance of such policies and their impact.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevention of youth marijuana use has become a national priority in the United States. This study examined the influence of parent and peer disapproval on youth marijuana use, mediated by youth risk perception. Because the legal status of marijuana use can influence individual perceptions of the drug, this study investigated differences in the mediating mechanism between youth living in states with medical marijuana legalization (MML) and those living in non-MML states. METHODS The 2019 National Survey of Drug Use and Health was used with a youth population aged 12-17 years (N = 2293). Structural equation modeling and bias-corrected bootstrapping were used to examine hypothesized path models and to evaluate the mediating effect of youth risk perception. RESULT Findings demonstrated that parent and peer disapproval significantly increased youth risk perception of marijuana and reduced youth marijuana use. Second, youth risk perception significantly mediated the association between parent and peer disapproval and youth marijuana use. Third, parent disapproval had a more significant direct effect on youth marijuana use, while peer disapproval had a more significant indirect effect on youth marijuana use via youth risk perception. Finally, the results showed a similar pattern in the mechanism between youths living in MML states compared with those in non-MML states in terms of significance and direction. CONCLUSION The findings suggested a need for improvements in marijuana related policies for both MML and non-MML states. Moreover, parent and peer focused strategies for education and prevention concerning marijuana use among youth are emphasized.

Abstract
Objective: The objectives of the current study were to (1) characterize predictors of perceived risk of driving within 2 h of cannabis use and driving after cannabis use in a sample of adults who have used cannabis in the past year and (2) determine whether the influence of these predictors vary by state legalizations status.Methods: Data for this study were from online surveys. Study participants from Colorado, Iowa, and Illinois were included if they reported being between 25 and 40 years old and had a history of cannabis use. Outcome variables included (1) days of cannabis use per month, (2) reported driving within 2 h of cannabis use (vs. not driving within 2 h as reference), (3) proportion of driving after cannabis use days per month (days of driving a car within 2 h of cannabis use per month/days of cannabis use per month), and (4) perception of safety of driving after cannabis use. Potential predictors included age of first use of cannabis, gender, education status, and state of residence. The SAS GLMSELECT Procedure was used for the analysis.Results: Increased age of first use of cannabis was associated with decreased days of cannabis use per month (B = -0.51 days/month per year), a reduction in the proportion of driving after cannabis use days per month (B = -0.02 per month), and decreased perception of safety of driving after cannabis use (B = -0.06 per year). Female gender was also associated with less use (B = -2.3 days per month), a lower proportion of driving following use (B = -0.06 days driving/days used), and decreased perception of safety (B = -0.29). In addition, residents of Colorado reported using the most days, had the highest likelihood of driving within 2 h of use, and had the most positive perceptions of being able to safely drive after cannabis use.Conclusions: The delay in onset of cannabis use may mitigate its use among adults and driving after cannabis use. This has important implications for driver safety. Intervention programs for reducing cannabis's effects on driving should focus on individuals with early onset of use, male drivers, and drivers in states where cannabis for adult recreational use is legalized.

Abstract
Cannabis is the most used recreational drug in the United States, and its use is increasing among children and adolescents. With the increase in legalized use, there have been increases in intentional and accidental cannabis exposure in the pediatric population. There is also minimized perceived risk. We review the current use of cannabis and its derivatives, the drug effects and clinical presentation, common misconceptions, pharmacology, and epidemiology. Finally, we review some long-term consequences of cannabis use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many states have legalized recreational cannabis use for adults. However, no study has examined how this policy may interact with youth vaping to influence cannabis use among US adolescents. This study investigates whether the association between baseline e-cigarette use and subsequent cannabis use differs by state recreational cannabis legalization status. METHODS This study analyzed data from the first four waves (2013-2018) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study, a nationally representative longitudinal survey. The study sample included adolescents (aged 12-17) who reported never used cannabis at baseline. Generalized estimating equations were used to analyze the effect modification of state recreational cannabis law on the association between baseline e-cigarette use and cannabis use at 12-month follow-up, controlling for individual characteristics. RESULTS Among adolescents who have never used cannabis at baseline, baseline past-30-day e-cigarette use was significantly associated with past-30-day cannabis use at 12-month follow-up (aOR=5.92, 95% CI: 3.52-9.95). This association was different by state recreational cannabis legalization status, as indicated by the significant interaction term. Subgroup analysis showed that the aOR was 18.39 (95% CI: 4.25-79.68) for adolescents living in states that legalized adult recreational cannabis use and 5.09 (95% CI: 2.86-9.07) for adolescents living in states without such laws. CONCLUSIONS E-cigarette use is associated with cannabis initiation among youth. This association is stronger among those living in states that legalized adult recreational cannabis use. Further examination of the impact of e-cigarette use on cannabis initiation in relation to state cannabis laws is warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The current study examines the association of perceived racial and social class discrimination with cannabis involvement among Black youth and young adults. METHODS This secondary analysis used data from the Missouri Family Study (MOFAM), a high-risk longitudinal family study of alcohol use disorder, oversampled for Black families. Offspring (n = 806) and their mothers were interviewed by telephone. Cox proportional hazards regression analyzes were used to examine associations of racial and social class discrimination (experienced by offspring and their mothers) with offspring cannabis involvement. Two stages of cannabis involvement were analyzed: timing of 1) initiation and 2) transition from initiation to first cannabis use disorder (CUD) symptom. RESULTS The study found that offspring report of experiencing racial (HR: 1.28, CI: 1.01-1.62) and social class discrimination (HR: 1.45, CI: 1.14-1.84) were associated with cannabis initiation in our fully adjusted model. Mothers' report of discrimination predicted a lower hazard of cannabis initiation among offspring (HR: 0.79, CI: 0.64-0.98). Offspring social class discrimination (HR: 2.45, CI: 1.71-3.51) predicted an increased hazard of transition from initiation to first CUD symptom, while offspring racial discrimination (HR: 0.57, CI: 0.39-0.85) was associated with lower hazard of transition in our fully adjusted model. CONCLUSIONS As rates for cannabis use among Black youth are disproportionately rising, there is a critical need to identify pathways to its use among Black youth. These findings suggest racial and social class discrimination may be important targets in efforts to prevent cannabis involvement among Black youth and emerging adults.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION E-cigarette use may be associated prospectively with subsequent cannabis use among U.S. adolescents. However, it remains unclear whether this association differs by individual mental health status. This longitudinal study examines effect modifications by mental health status. METHODS The first 4 waves (2013-2017) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health study were analyzed in 2020. Adolescents (aged 12-17 years) who reported never using cannabis at baseline waves were included. Waves 1-3 were each considered as baseline for their 12-month follow-up waves. Generalized estimating equations were used to evaluate the effect modification of internalizing mental health and externalizing mental health problems on the associations between baseline past 30-day e-cigarette use and past 30-day cannabis use at follow-up, controlling for individual characteristics and state recreational cannabis laws. RESULTS Baseline e-cigarette use was significantly associated with cannabis use at follow-up (AOR=4.81, 95% CI=2.93, 7.90). Adolescents with high severity of internalizing mental health/externalizing mental health problems were significantly more likely to initiate cannabis use. However, current e-cigarette users who reported high severity of internalizing mental health symptoms were less likely to initiate cannabis use (AOR=2.51, 95% CI=0.92, 6.83) than those who reported low severity of internalizing mental health problems (AOR=8.84, 95% CI=4.19, 18.65). There were no differences by the severity of externalizing mental health problems. CONCLUSIONS Baseline e-cigarette use and endorsement of severe internalizing mental health/externalizing mental health problems were significantly associated with subsequent cannabis use among U.S. adolescents. Efforts to reduce youth vaping and improve youth mental health could help curb cannabis initiation. Tailored interventions may be warranted for e-cigarette‒using adolescents with internalizing mental health problems.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Recent studies have raised the concern on the risk of asthma in marijuana smokers; however, the results remain controversial and warrant further investigation. With a growing number of marijuana smokers, examining the association between marijuana smoking and asthma and quantifying such association through meta-analysis have important implications for public health and clinical decision-making. In view of this, the present protocol aims to detail a comprehensive plan of meta-analysis on the association aforementioned. The findings are expected to strengthen the current knowledge base pertaining to the potential adverse effects of marijuana smoking on pulmonary health and to facilitate the development of prevention strategies for asthma. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science and EMBASE databases will be searched systematically from inception to 1 September 2021 to retrieve the relevant observational studies focusing on the association between marijuana smoking and asthma. Both unadjusted and adjusted effect sizes, such as OR, relative risk, HR and the corresponding 95% CIs will be extracted for pooled analyses. Heterogeneity and publication bias across the included studies will be examined. The Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Scale will be used to assess the quality and risk of bias. Statistical software Review Manager V.5.3 and Stata V.11.0 will be used for statistical analyses. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Since no private and confidential patient data will be included in the reporting, approval from an ethics committee is not required. The results will be published in a peer-reviewed journal or disseminated in the relevant conferences. The study raises no ethical issue. OSF REGISTRATION NUMBER 10.17605/OSF.IO/UPTXC.

Abstract
A wealth of research links exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) with negative outcomes including nicotine and marijuana use. In addition, an emerging line of research has documented associations between exposure to ACEs and vaping activity in American adults and international samples of adolescents. Very limited research, however, has explored whether a history of ACEs is linked with adolescent nicotine and marijuana vaping activity in an American sample. This study addresses this gap in the literature by employing multinomial logistic regression to examine whether cumulative exposure to ACEs is associated with adolescent nicotine vaping, dual mode use of nicotine, marijuana vaping, and dual mode use of marijuana in a sample of Florida high school students. Our findings reveal that greater cumulative exposure to ACEs (up to 5 ACEs) in adolescents leads to an increase in the likelihood of vaping nicotine and marijuana. In addition, greater cumulative exposure to ACEs (up to 6 ACEs) leads to an increase in the likelihood of using nicotine and marijuana through multiple delivery modes.

Abstract
Substance use, a significant public health issue, is well described in the adult chronic kidney disease (CKD) population. Knowledge about substance use in the adolescent and young adult (AYA) CKD population such as prevalence, impact on kidney function, medication adherence, and psychosocial well-being remain largely unknown. Awareness of and inquiring about substance use is paramount to providing evidence-based care and preparation to transition to adult-focused health services. The authors in this review identify commonly used substances (alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, etc.) and how they impact kidney function and care of the AYA with CKD or kidney failure. Recommendations for screening and intervention strategies are provided.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Marijuana vaping among adolescents is a growing public health concern. Marijuana vaping exposes youth to greater levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and may be related to e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI). This study examined the risk factors for initiating marijuana vaping among US adolescents. METHODS We analyzed Waves 3 (2015-2016) and 4 (2016-2018) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study. We estimate a multivariable logistic regression to model marijuana vaping initiation at Wave 4 among those who never vaped marijuana at Wave 3 (N = 7,821) as a function of key risk factors associated with youth substance use. RESULTS Marijuana vaping initiation is associated with current use of electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) (aOR = 2.16, 95 % CI = 1.20, 3.89), cigarettes (aOR = 2.65, 95 % CI = 1.10, 6.35), other marijuana products (aOR = 7.78, 95 % CI = 3.74, 6.15), and alcohol (aOR = 1.98, 95 % CI = 1.35, 2.91). Other factors contributing to marijuana vaping initiation include being 15-17 years old (aOR = 1.51, 95 % CI = 1.19, 1.90) and Hispanic (aOR = 1.37, 95 % CI = 1.08, 1.76), as well as having less than college-level parental education (aOR = 1.35, 95 % CI = 1.07, 1.70), vaping peers (aOR = 2.31; 95 % CI = 1.81, 2.96), and a high internalizing (aOR = 1.49, 95 % CI = 1.10, 2.02) and externalizing tendency (aOR = 1.66, 95 % CI = 1.14, 2.41). CONCLUSIONS Multi-level efforts are needed to target the varying risk factors leading to marijuana vaping initiation in adolescents. Knowledge of these risk factors can help policymakers and health program administrators to identify at-risk individuals and design interventions that can prevent marijuana vaping initiation at the individual, household, school, clinical and public health levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Blunt use is a popular mode of marijuana consumption among adolescents in the United States, but little is known about how its prevalence has changed over time or factors associated with its use. With this study, we assessed trends and correlates of past (ever used but not in the past 30 days) and current (used in past 30 days) blunt use among adolescents in Florida. METHODS We analyzed data from 2010-2020 cross-sectional, statewide representative Florida Youth Tobacco Surveys that comprised 461 706 middle and high schoolers using Joinpoint to calculate annual percentage change (APC) in the weighted prevalence of past and current blunt use. A weighted multivariable regression model was developed by using 2019-2020 Florida Youth Tobacco Survey data to examine the factors associated with past and current blunt use. RESULTS Whereas the prevalence of past (APC = -5.32%) and current (APC = -5.28%) blunt use significantly decreased from 2010 to 2015, an increasing trend in current use prevalence (APC = 14.91%) was observed from 2015 to 2018 and has been approximately constant ever since. Similar increasing trends were observed in current blunt use among female students (APC = 14.92%), middle schoolers (19.57%), and non-Hispanic (NH) white students (APC = 11.12%) from 2016 to 2020. Several factors were consistently associated with greater odds of both past and current blunt use for both middle and high schoolers, including older age, being NH Black (versus NH white), past and current use of cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, hookah, cigars, and ever vaping marijuana. CONCLUSIONS Although blunt use among Florida youth decreased from 2010 to 2015, substantial increases were observed since 2015, suggesting that existing tobacco control programs should incorporate marijuana (and blunt) modules into existing tobacco and nicotine prevention programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Marijuana is the most commonly used psychoactive drug, while its effects on cardiovascular health are not well known and remain a subject of interest. METHODS We used the pooled 2016-2018 data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to perform a cross-sectional analysis evaluating the association of marijuana and cardiovascular disease among US adults who never smoked cigarettes. RESULTS Among US adults ages 18-74 years, when compared with nonusers, frequent marijuana use was associated with 88% higher odds of myocardial infarction or coronary artery disease (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.88; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.15-3.08), and 81% higher odds of stroke (aOR 1.81; 95% CI, 1.14-2.89). Among the premature cardiovascular disease group, frequent marijuana users had 2.3 times higher odds of myocardial infarction or coronary artery disease (aOR 2.27; 95% CI, 1.20-4.30), and 1.9 times higher odds of stroke (aOR 1.92; 95% CI, 1.07-3.43). In terms of the modality of marijuana use, frequent marijuana smoking had 2.1 times higher odds of myocardial infarction or coronary artery disease (aOR 2.07; 95% CI, 1.21-3.56), and 1.8 times higher odds of stroke (aOR 1.84; 95% CI, 1.09-3.10). A similar association was observed in the premature cardiovascular disease group who smoked marijuana (aOR [for myocardial infarction or coronary artery disease] 2.64; 95% CI, 1.37-5.09; aOR [for stroke] 2.00; 95% CI, 1.05-3.79). No association was observed between marijuana use in any form other than smoking and cardiovascular disease, across all age groups. CONCLUSION Frequent marijuana smoking is associated with significantly higher odds of stroke and myocardial infarction or coronary artery disease, with a possible role in premature cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Daily use of marijuana is rising in adolescents, along with consumption of high potency marijuana products (high % Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC). These dual, related trends have opened gaps in understanding the long-term effects of daily consumption of a high dose of THC in adolescents and whether a therapeutic dose of cannabidiol (CBD) modulates THC effects. METHODS Adolescent squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) were treated daily for four months with vehicle (n = 4), a high THC dose (1 mg/kg i.m.; n = 4), or THC + CBD (1 mg/kg +3 mg/kg i.m.; n = 4), to investigate whether: (1) a daily high THC dose affects performance in tasks of cognition (repeated acquisition, discrimination reversal); (2) a daily high THC dose affects spontaneous behavior and day/night activity (3) tolerance develops to the behavioral effects of THC; (4) whether CBD modulates THC effects. RESULTS THC impaired performance of adolescent monkeys in a cognitive test initially, but not performance on a task of cognitive flexibility. THC reduced motor activity and increased sedentary behavior, with tolerance developing after weeks of daily treatment. Co-administered with THC, CBD did not modulate THC effects on cognitive performance, activity or tolerance, but prevented THC-induced emesis on the first day of daily treatment. CONCLUSIONS Daily high dosing with THC compromised performance on a task of cognition, and reduced activity in adolescent primates, with tolerance developing within weeks. Whether our observations are relevant to a broader range of cognitive tasks vital for daily function in human adolescents is uncertain.

Abstract
Marijuana is derived from the cannabis sativa plant originating in central and southeast Asia. In recent years, there was increasing popularity and use of marijuana in addition to the legalization of its recreational use in eleven states. However, the effect of marijuana on the voice is still unclear. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to determine the perceived impacts marijuana has on voice by surveying patients from a voice center. The inquiry included smoking, vaping, edible marijuana, and cannabidiol (CBD) oil. METHODS AND MATERIALS An anonymous, web-based questionnaire was sent to adult voice center patients. The survey was distributed using The Research Electronic Data Capture (RED-Cap) tool, hosted by Drexel University. The survey was designed to collect relevant demographic data, past laryngeal history, marijuana use history, and beliefs about effects of marijuana on voice. RESULTS The survey was sent to 434 voice patients, 42 patients responded to the survey (response rate 9.68%). The average age of respondents was 45.7 (13 were male, 27 were female, and 2 were transgender). Of all, 88.10% reported having never used tobacco, 9.52% were former tobacco users, and 2.38% were current tobacco users. Of all, 75.61% of the respondents reported having tried some form of marijuana during their lifetime (16.13% reported medical use, 45.16% reported recreational use). Out of all, 21.43% were frequent (monthly) users, and 39.29% were infrequent (yearly) marijuana smokers. They reported symptoms that they attributed to marijuana use, including hoarseness, breathiness, and weakness. CONCLUSION Marijuana may have negative effects on the voice.
