Abstract
Introduction Osteoporosis mainly affects postmenopausal women and is characterized by decreasing bone mass and an increased risk of fracture. As populations age, it becomes more common and is frequently missed until fractures happen. Simultaneously, there is conflicting evidence about the relationship between bone health and diabetes, a chronic metabolic illness, with varying effects on the skeletal system. In light of the rising incidence of both disorders, this study examines the relationship between diabetes and osteoporosis/osteopenia in patients at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Methods At KAUH, Jeddah, a retrospective study on 423 type 2 diabetes patients (2011-2021) was conducted, analyzing clinical outcomes, including BMI and blood glucose levels, using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 23 (Released 2015; IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Ethical approval was granted by the Institutional Review Board, ensuring compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Guidelines. Results In this study, 423 diabetic patients with an average body mass index (BMI) of 29.12 kg/m² and ages ranging from 24 to 104 years (mean, 63.67) were primarily male, with 216 patients accounting for 51.1%. A total of 227 patients (53.7%) were aged 60-79 years. Most participants, 400 patients (94.6%), had average bone mineral density (BMD), while 161 patients (38.1%) were classified as obese. Among those with abnormal BMD, 23 patients (5.4%); 12 (2.8%) were identified as having osteopenia, and 11 (2.6%) were diagnosed with osteoporosis. Glycemic management and bone health indicators were examined in the lab, along with comprehensive BMD and T/Z scores. Conclusion This study enhances our understanding of the relationship between type 2 diabetes and bone health, emphasizing the importance of individualized evaluations for high-risk populations. Further research is needed to explore the complex interplay between diabetes, bone health, and demographic factors, to inform more effective preventive and therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Background Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease in humans, representing a major public health problem affecting women more commonly. The prevalence of osteoporosis in Saudi Arabia is high among females. Thus, the knowledge and Health Belief Model (HBM) of osteoporosis, which can be used to gain an understanding of health behaviors and reasons for non-compliance to osteoprotective recommendations, is necessary. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge and constructs of the HBM for osteoporosis prevention among females in Saudi Arabia. Methodology This cross-sectional study investigated the knowledge and HBM which includes perceived susceptibility and severity, perceived benefits, barriers, self-efficacy, and clues to action for preventing osteoporosis among females in Saudi Arabia. The study population consisted of females living in Saudi Arabia aged 18 years or more and not having osteoporosis. The convenient consecutive non-probability sampling technique was used to recruit 406 females aged 18 years or more using an online form. In addition to content validity and Cronbach's alpha for overall reliability, Bloom's cut-off scale was utilized to evaluate the knowledge level and HBM. Results The study revealed a moderate level of knowledge of all the constructs of HBM except that of perceived barriers which was low. All the constructs of the HBM were significantly and positively correlated with knowledge level except perceived barriers which was significantly and negatively correlated with knowledge level. Many participants received cues to act, such as not being able to afford treatment or not having anybody to take care of them while they were sick. Conclusions The Saudi female population's general knowledge of osteoporosis and HBM was moderate, while that of perceived barriers was low.

Abstract
Background Osteoporosis is a chronic bone metabolic disease that affects millions of people worldwide, particularly the elderly and postmenopausal women. It is characterized by weakened bones, increasing the risk of fractures and leading to significant morbidity and mortality. The goal of the current study is to examine the reported osteo-preservative effects of exercise and/or fasting in the Ramadan fasting model (RFM) in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Methods The experimental intervention started 1 month following the ovariectomy procedure and consisted of five 15-min exercise sessions per week at 18-25 m/min and/or an approximately 13-h fast from sunrise to sunset (6:00 AM-19:00 PM). Serum bone metabolism biomarker levels were measured, and mineral concentrations in femoral ashed bones and digested serum were determined. Additionally, serum bone alkaline phosphatase (b-ALP), parathyroid hormone, osteocalcin, calcitonin, and vitamin D3 concentrations were measured using the competitive enzyme immunoassay technique. Results Calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus showed a notable decrease in mineral concentration among OVX rat femurs compared with the combination group (OVX + RFM + E) and control groups. In addition, homeostasis of serum concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus was observed to increase in the OVX + RFM + E group rather than in the OVX group without intervention when compared with a control group. Furthermore, fasting and exercise, either alone or concurrently with ovariectomy, induced a non-significant elevation in osteocalcin, parathyroid hormone, and vitamin D3, whereas b-ALP and calcitonin increased significantly compared with those in control rats. Conclusion The combination of the Ramadan fasting model and moderate intensity exercises among OVX rats manifested advantageous effects in bone biomarkers compared with OVX rats without intervention. This could be recommended as a lifestyle modification that is protective against osteoporosis, especially in the context of depleted estrogen hormone after menopause.

Abstract
Background Osteoporosis is a chronic bone disease associated with a reduction in bone mass and an increased risk of fractures. The prevalence of osteoporosis is rising globally, including in Saudi Arabia, where there is a lack of information regarding the uptake of osteoporosis screening services. This study aims to examine self-efficacy and barriers toward osteoporosis screening in older women and men in Al-Madina Munawara, Saudi Arabia. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among adults aged 60 and above who attended primary healthcare centers. Convenience sampling was used to recruit participants, and a self-administered questionnaire was used to assess sociodemographic characteristics, osteoporosis status, general health-related characteristics, and screening self-efficacy. Analyses included multivariable regression analyses to evaluate the association between osteoporosis screening self-efficacy and potential explanatory variables. Data were collected in the last quarter of 2023. Results In a study involving 342 completed questionnaires, the mean age of participants was 66.2 years (SD = 4.3), with a range from 60 to 79 years, and the majority were male (230, 67.3%), having chronic diseases (226, 66.3%). Regarding osteoporosis risk factors and screening behaviors, the majority did not use prednisolone (252, 74.1%), did not have a family history of osteoporosis (216, 63.2%), had not experienced falls in the past five years (223, 65.2%), and had not undergone osteoporosis screening (299, 87.4%). The mean self-efficacy score for osteoporosis screening was 37.7 (SD = 4.7), ranging from 10 to 50, which indicated a moderate level of screening self-efficacy. In multivariate analysis, smokers were more likely to have higher scores in self-efficacy for osteoporosis screening compared to non-smokers (RR = 1.10; 95% CI = 1.01, 1.21). Participants who did osteoporosis screening (RR = 1.12; 95% CI = 1.01, 1.24) and those who were planning to do osteoporosis screening (RR = 1.10; 95% CI = 1.03, 1.19) were more likely to have higher score in self-efficacy for osteoporosis screening compared to their counterparts. Conclusion The participants had a fair level of screening self-efficacy. The smokers and those who had undergone or planned to undertake osteoporosis screening demonstrated higher self-efficacy scores than others. A lot of progress could be made in decreasing the burden of osteoporosis and enhancing the overall health and well-being of the older population by addressing these issues using specific interventions and policy measures.

Abstract
Background Osteoporosis (OP) is a state of abnormal bone quality and architecture that leads to fragility fractures, with lifetime costs reaching 16.27 billion Saudi Arabian Riyal (SAR). Methods An electronic survey was distributed to physicians from July 2020 to May 2021 to assess the quality of the practice of physicians toward OP and barriers in OP management in Saudi Arabia. Specialties included were endocrinology, general medicine, family medicine, primary care, orthopedic surgery, rheumatology, obstetrics and gynecology, and geriatrics. Results A total of 177 surveys were eligible (55.9% female and 44.1% male). The majority were family consultants (42.9%). In terms of knowledge, 18.1% of our sample recognized all risk factors, and 24.9% recognized all indications to assess bone density. A central dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) was accessible to only 49.4% of the sample. Over 80% of the sample performed comprehensive laboratory workup. Although 68.4% of participants were aware of fracture risk assessment (FRAX), 53.7% used it in their practice. The most cited barrier was a lack of physicians' awareness (80.2%), followed by a lack of patients' awareness (63.6%). The specialty was significantly associated with the awareness of the densitometry certificate (P-value < 0.0001) and the use of FRAX (P-value = 0.0001). Conclusion Our results revealed a below-satisfactory quality of practice among Saudi physicians toward OP. Additionally, our results identified many gaps in knowledge and many barriers to optimal care.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Osteoporosis is a major clinical problem that affects the whole population, especially women. It is a condition that is becoming more prevalent with aging. The increase in bone fragility associated with the disease can lead to fractures, even from minor trauma. Our goal is to evaluate the extent of knowledge about osteoporosis and perceptions of it among premenopausal women in Saudi Arabia. METHOD This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among premenopausal women during the months of June and July 2021. We distributed an online questionnaire on social networking sites and applications that Saudi women use on a daily basis. We used the Osteoporosis Knowledge Assessment Tool (OKAT) to evaluate the responses. RESULT A total of 661 women took part in our study; 159 of them were excluded because they had either reached the menopausal period or had already been diagnosed with the disease. The overall perception of osteoporosis is noticeably poor, as only 55% of respondents had an acceptable level of knowledge. In addition, we found a statistically significant association between education level and knowledge level (p-value = 0.044). CONCLUSION The findings revealed that more than half the participants scored "acceptable" in terms of their understanding of the disease, which indicates a serious awareness gap. This outcome demonstrates the necessity of increasing community awareness about osteoporosis to reduce potential harm and the financial burden of healthcare.

Abstract
PURPOSE This retrospective study investigated the correlation between bone mineral density (BMD) and COVID-19 severity among COVID-19 patients who underwent chest computed tomography (CT) scans. METHODS This study was carried out at the King Abdullah Medical Complex in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, one of the largest COVID-19 centers in the western province. All adult COVID-19 patients who had a chest CT between January 2020 and April 2022 were included in the study. The pulmonary severity scores (PSS) and vertebral BMD measurements were obtained from the patient's CT chest. Data from the patients' electronic records were collected. RESULTS The average patient age was 56.4 years, and most (73.5%) patients were men. Diabetes (n = 66, 48.5%), hypertension (n = 56, 41.2%), and coronary artery disease (n = 17, 12.5%) were the most prevalent comorbidities. Approximately two-thirds of hospitalized patients required ICU admission (64%), and one-third died (30%). The average length of stay in the hospital was 28.4 days. The mean CT pneumonia severity score (PSS) was 10.6 at the time of admission. Patients with lower vertebral BMD (< = 100) numbered 12 (8.8%), while those with higher vertebral BMD (>100) numbered 124 (91.2%). Only 46 out of the total survived patients (n = 95) were admitted to the ICU versus all deceased (P<0.01). The logistic regression analysis revealed that an elevated PSS upon admission resulted in a reduced chance of survival. Age, gender, and BMD did not predict survival chances. CONCLUSION The BMD had no prognostic advantage, and the PSS was the significant factor that could have predicted the outcome.

Abstract
Purpose Bone health and osteoporosis are significant health problems in Saudi Arabia. Approximately 40%-50% of women and 25%-33% of men sustain osteoporotic fractures in their lifetimes. Hence, identifying the risk factors for osteoporosis is crucial in reducing the incidence of fractures. Materials and Methods We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of 557 patients (female 60%, male 40%) aged ≥18 years (mean age, 66.53 years [standard deviation ± 14.169]) who underwent bone mineral density (BMD) scans at the Department of Family Medicine & Polyclinics, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH&RC) between January 2004 and June 2019. Data collected included demographics, BMD values, vitamin B12 levels, and folate levels. Results This study indicated that the prevalence rates of vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies among the study population were 8.4% and 1.3%, respectively. There was a statistically significant association between vitamin B12 levels and fracture risk (P =0.044). However, no statistically significant correlation was observed between BMD at either site (lumbar spine or femoral neck) and vitamin B12 (P =0.926.,070) and folate levels (P =.683.,79). BMD showed a significant positive correlation with body mass index at the lumbar spine and femoral neck (P = 0.000). There was no statistically significant association between vitamin B12 levels and the use of metformin (P =.26). Conclusion Vitamin B12 is associated with fracture risk; however, vitamin B12 and folate levels are not correlated to BMD (femoral neck and lumbar spine).

Abstract
Introduction Hip fractures are common in the elderly, especially with vitamin D deficiency. Currently, there is a paucity of case-control studies regarding the relationship between the time until full weight bearing of hip fractures and vitamin D levels in Saudi Arabia. Our aim is to determine time until full weight bearing of hip fractures in patients with vitamin D deficiency compared with normal vitamin D in the age of 50 and above. Materials and methods This was a hospital-based non-interventional retrospective case-control study conducted among patients with hip fractures aged 50 years and above between January 2017 and April 2021. It was done at King Abdulaziz university hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A review of the medical records and operation records for the relative operation was done to check patients' lab values around the time of the operation and following the documented healing process. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26 (IBM Inc., Armonk, New York). Correlation analysis was performed using Spearman's test, and a p-value of 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results In our research, 36 patients were participants in the study, with about two-thirds (22) of the participants being female (61.1%). 52.8% of the participants had an age ranging from 71-80 years, with a mean age of 75.66 ± 9.53 years. A non-significant relationship between the time until full weight bearing of hip fractures and the vitamin d levels is demonstrated. By that, the research question was disproved by the given data. Conclusion The time until full weight bearing of hip fracture is not significantly related to vitamin D level. In this study, the majority of patients (77.1%) were vitamin D deficient, which raises our concern for vitamin D deficiency to be a major health problem in our society. However, this evidence should be further assessed in larger trials. Additional studies on this topic are recommended to be done.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to describe the baseline clinical characteristics and fracture history of patients taking teriparatide in routine clinical practice in the Middle East (ME) subregional cohort of the Asia and Latin America Fracture Observational Study (ALAFOS). METHODS Herein, we report baseline clinical characteristics of patients who were prescribed teriparatide (20 µg/day, subcutaneous injection) in four participant ME countries (Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Lebanon). RESULTS The ME cohort included 707 patients mean (SD) age 69.3 (11.6) years. Mean (SD) bone mineral density (BMD) T-scores at baseline were -3.13 (1.28) for lumbar spine, -2.88 (0.94) for total hip, and -2.65 (1.02) for femoral neck. Osteoporotic fractures after age 40 years were reported in 45.8% (vertebral fracture 14.4%, hip fracture 18.4%) and comorbidities in 57.4% of patients. Before starting teriparatide, 19.9% of patients took other osteoporosis medications. The median (Q1; Q3) EuroQoL 5-Dimension 5-Level visual analog scale score for perceived overall health status was 70 (50; 80). Mean (SD) worst back pain in the previous 24 hours was 4.0 (3.2) using a 10-point numeric rating scale. CONCLUSION This analysis indicated that in ME countries, teriparatide is usually prescribed to patients with low BMD and high comorbidities, with prior fractures.

Abstract
While the independent roles of vitamin D and sex hormones in skeletal health are well established, the associations of vitamin D and its metabolites to sex hormones and their indices are less investigated. In this observational study, clinical information of 189 Saudi postmenopausal women aged ≥50 years old [N = 80 with normal bone mineral density (BMD), aged 53.3 ± 7.7 years with body mass index (BMI)= 34.1kg/m2 ± 5.8, and N = 109 with low BMD (T-score −1.0 to −2.5), aged 57.0 ± 8.2 years, BMI = 32.4kg/m2 ± 6.2] was extracted from an existing capital-wide osteoporosis registry in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Data included were BMD scores, serum total 25(OH)D, sex hormones, and bone turnover markers which were measured using commercially available assays. Age- and BMI-adjusted comparisons revealed significantly higher parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels as well as significantly lower testosterone and bioavailable testosterone in the low BMD group than the normal BMD group (p-values 0.04, 0.02, and 0.03, respectively). Stepwise linear regression showed that circulating testosterone levels accounted for 9.7% and 8.9% of the variances perceived in bioavailable 25(OH)D and free 25(OH)D, respectively (p < 0.01), independent of other sex hormones, sex hormone indices, and bone turnover markers. Our study suggests that androgens are significantly associated with non-conventional vitamin D metabolites and these associations may have clinical relevance in assessing risk for low BMD and osteoporosis in Arab postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Human exposure to poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) is widespread and has received considerable attention in recent years due to their link with adverse health outcomes, including bone health. Nevertheless, no earlier studies have reported serum PFAS concentrations, and their association with incident osteoporosis in populations in Saudi Arabia. In this clinical case-control study, serum samples collected from 208 individuals (n = 100 cases and n = 108 controls) aged 40-89 years from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, were analyzed for 17 PFASs. Unconditional logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) for association between serum PFAS concentrations and osteoporosis, stratified by gender, age, serum calcium and vitamin D, previous history of fractures and thyroid disorders. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), perfluoro-n-pentanoic acid (PFPeA) and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA) were detected in >80% of serum samples analyzed. PFOS (overall median concentration: 5.08 ng/mL), PFHxS (1.49 ng/mL), PFOA (1.33 ng/mL) and PFNA (0.55 ng/mL) accounted for 94% and 80% of the total serum PFASs concentrations in cases and controls, respectively. Serum PFOA, PFNA and PFUnDA concentrations increased with age in Saudi women. Results from the crude models showed that individuals in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quartiles of serum PFAS concentrations had 2.3-96-fold increase in odds of diagnosis for osteoporosis compared with those in the 1st quartile (rank order: PFUnDA > PFOA > PFNA > PFOS > PFHxS). Our results suggest that exposure to PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS and PFUnDA was associated with osteoporosis in this sample of adult Saudi population.

Abstract
Background and Aims Little is known about the prevalence of osteoporotic fracture, its sociodemographic correlates, and its comorbid conditions among the adult population of the Kingdome of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Hence, the present work aimed to assess the prevalence of adults at high risk of osteoporotic fracture in the presence of its known risk factors. As well, to determine the most commonly associated comorbidities of osteoporosis in Saudi Arabia. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed among 518 Saudi adults aged over 45 years in Al-Ahsaa city, KSA. The Arabic version of the fracture risk assessment FRAX without bone mineral density (BMD) was presented in an online questionnaire. Results The 10-year risk for major osteoporotic fracture was found in 50.81% of the participants; 23.48% of them were at high risk and 25.71% at moderate risk. Also, 26.27% of the respondents were at high risk of hip fracture. Significant correlates of osteoporotic fractures included female gender (P = 0.003), old age (P = 0.000), age at menopause (P = 0.000), low body mass index (BMI; P = 0.000), previous fracture (P = 0.000), alcohol consumption (P = 0.000), positive family history (P = 0.000), corticosteroids (P = 0.000), rheumatoid arthritis (P = 0.000), thyroid hyperactivity (P = 0.000), gonadal insufficiency (P = 0.000), chronic liver disease (P = 0.000), nutritional, or gestational disease (P = 0.000). Conclusion More than a third of the surveyed population had osteoporosis, which was associated with many sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Therefore, early interventions for osteoporosis and the prevention of other comorbidities may improve the outcome of osteoporosis.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We surveyed 573 physicians in the Middle East regarding osteoporosis management. Sixty percent had access to, but were not in charge of, densitometry reporting. Screening for secondary causes was common; 62% were aware of FRAX®; less than half used it. Medications were accessible, and most participants had concerns regarding bisphosphonates. Barriers to care were identified. INTRODUCTION The 2011 IOF Middle East Osteoporosis Audit highlighted major care gaps in osteoporosis care in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. We investigated osteoporosis management practice patterns in this region. METHODS We mailed an electronic survey to a convenience sample of physicians, explaining the study rationale and methods. It gathered information on physicians' profiles, availability and utilization of resources, risk assessment, and management. RESULTS Five hundred seventy-three responses were obtained from the United Arab Emirates (UAE, 36%), Saudi Arabia (KSA, 25%), Lebanon (14%), and others (25%). Endocrinology was the single most represented specialty. Sixty percent of participants had access to densitometers, but treating physicians were not in charge of densitometry reading. Screening for vitamin D deficiency and secondary contributors to osteoporosis was frequently implemented. Although two-thirds of professionals were aware of FRAX®, only 42% used it, either because of lack of know how or of a country specific calculator. Almost all (96.0%) had access to oral and 68.9% to intravenous bisphosphonates, and over half to teriparatide (46.4%) and denosumab (45.0%). Most participants (92%) were aware of concerns regarding side effects of bisphosphonates, and this changed the management in the majority (73%). Important barriers to osteoporosis care were lack of osteoporosis awareness among physicians, patients, and cost of treatment. CONCLUSIONS This first look at physicians' practice patterns on the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis in the MENA region underscores the pressing need for an official call for action, at all levels, to address this large care gap.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Awareness and knowledge about any disease is the first step to prevent and treat it, so this study evaluates osteoporosis awareness and knowledge in university students. Our results showed a high awareness and good knowledge of osteoporosis. Females were better informed than males. Knowledge increased with increasing education level. PURPOSE Osteoporosis is a worldwide health problem, including Saudi Arabia where vitamin D deficiency is common. Prevention of osteoporosis must begin by increasing awareness of the disease from a young age. This study aimed to assess awareness and knowledge of osteoporosis among young adults (18-30 years) attending Saudi universities, exploring the relationship between education and gender and the sources of information in this age group. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 337 students (176 females; 161 males) randomly selected from four Saudi universities during January-December 2017. Education level ranged from preparatory year to undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A self-reported questionnaire was designed to assess awareness and knowledge of osteoporosis across several domains, including risk factors for the disease, prevalence, symptoms, prevention, and treatment. RESULTS Overall, 92% of students had some awareness of osteoporosis through a variety of sources, predominantly via friends. Just over half of all students had a good or high knowledge level overall (53.4 ± 16.6%). Knowledge score correlated with education (r2 = 0.28) and gender (r2 = 0.27); p < 0.0001. Females were better informed than males (57.7 ± 15.4% vs 48.8 ± 16.8%; p < 0.0001). Knowledge increased with increasing education level (preparatory year (47.8 ± 15.3%), undergraduate (53.5 ± 16.5%), and postgraduate (61.8 ± 15.8%); all p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION Knowledge of osteoporosis was good among university students in Saudi Arabia, higher in females and with increasing years of education. Overall, students were more knowledgeable about risk factors compared to other aspects such as symptoms, prevention, or treatment of osteoporosis.

Abstract
AIM To analyze risk factors leading to osteopenia and osteoporosis among young female students. METHODS Quantitative Ultrasonography measurements were performed in the calcaneal region of 101 young Saudi females. Dietary habits, exercising and sun exposure were assessed using questionnaires. The association between the different studied factors was assessed by Pearson test and multiple linear regression model. RESULTS Participants diagnosed with either osteopenia or osteoporosis (>33%.) showed significant higher soft drinks consumption, reduced exercise, limited intake of milk and dairy products, calcium and vitamin D supplementation compared to the healthy group. Multiple regression analysis showed that T-score and Z-score were negatively associated with soft drink intake and positively associated with exercising, milk and dairy products consumption, and calcium and vitamin D supplementation use (p <0.05). CONCLUSION High soft drink intake, lack of exercising and limited calcium and vitamin D supplementation are the combined lifestyle factors leading to osteopenia and osteoporosis among young Saudi females. These findings might serve as a basis of nutrition education intervention to promote healthy bones among this population.

Abstract
AIM: This study aimed to assess the prevalence and determinants of osteoporosis [lumbar spine (LS) and femoral neck (FN)] among patients with type 2 diabetes at King Salman Hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred seventy patients with type 2 diabetes were enrolled in this cross-sectional study in the period from the 1st of January until the 1st of July 2015. Patient selection was based on self-report of the previous diagnosis by a physician, being on an antidiabetic agent, or a fasting glucose of 126 mg/dl as per the American Diabetes Association criteria. A dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scan with the bone mineral density (BMD) categorization based on the WHO cut of levels of T-scores and determination of vitamin D levels were performed. A detailed questionnaire was used to collect demographic data. RESULTS: Out of 170 participants, 50 (29.4%) were diagnosed as having osteoporosis, while 68 (40%) were diagnosed with osteopenia. Age was determined as a risk factor for a decreased BMD in patients with osteopenia (odds ratio (OR) = 1.1, 95% confidence interval (CI) = (1.0-1.1), p = 0.039) and osteoporosis (OR = 1.1, CI = 1.0-1.2, p < 0.001). Similarly, oral hypoglycemic agents (OHA) increased the risk of decreased BMD in osteopenia (OR = 2.6; CI = 1.0-6.7; p = 0.023) as well as osteoporosis, (OR = 3.8; CI = 1.3-10.9; p = 0.013), while vitamin D deficiency increased the risk of osteopenia OR = 3.0; CI = 1.2-7.2; p = 0.012). Increased BMI decreased the risk of both osteopenia and osteoporosis (OR = 0.9; CI = 0.9-0.99; p = 0.031 vs. OR = 0.9; CI = 0.80-0.95; p = 0.003). CONCLUSION: Advanced age, OHA and vitamin D deficiency are determinants of decreased BMD in Saudi women with type 2 diabetes, while an increased BMI protects against low BMD.

Abstract
Objective Osteoporosis is a global health problem, and its prevalence is rapidly increasing worldwide. Misconceptions about osteoporosis and the lack of preventive measures among women are still common, emphasizing the need for primary prevention at an early age. The process of planning an effective osteoporosis prevention programme requires sufficient information about women's osteoporosis health beliefs. The objective of this study is to assess the health beliefs of 20–44 year-old Arab women about osteoporosis at primary health care centres in the State of Qatar. Methods The researchers utilized a cross-sectional study design, where cluster sampling with proportionate allocation was employed to enrol 766 eligible women who were interviewed using a structured Arabic questionnaire. Results The majority of the participating women showed lower perceived susceptibility to osteoporosis (71.7%) but higher perceived benefits of preventive practices (91.7%). Conclusion Despite lower perception of susceptibility to osteoporosis, women were highly motivated to take care of their health and believed in the benefits of a calcium-rich diet and regular exercise. The integration of osteoporosis prevention into women's health programmes at the primary health care level, as well as physical activity and nutritional programs, are recommended.
