Effects of an alternating work shift on air traffic controllers and the relationship with excessive daytime sleepiness and stress

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the executive functions of air traffic controllers (ATCs) in relation to demographic and occupational characteristics such as length of service, technical qualifications, and work shifts.METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study based on a convenience sample with sequential selection of 52 Brazilian ATCs using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), questionnaire applied to the ATCs, Student's t-test, and one-way analysis of variance with post hoc Tukey multiple comparisons of WCST with functional characteristics.RESULTS: ATCs with 0 to 5 yr of service presented scores significantly above the cohort average in the WCST [0-5 yr: 0.54 ± 0.01 vs. 6-15 yr: 0.31 ± 0.52 vs. 151 yr: -0.02 ± 0.80]. ATCs working a 3-shift pattern presented an efficient performance and fewer perseverative errors in the WCST (3-shift: -0.63 ± 0.38 vs. 4-shift: -0.45 ± 0.43), that did not rise to significance. In a comparison between executive brain functions and technical qualifications, the controllers who worked in the TWR (Aerodrome Control Tower) only, and those who worked in both the TWR and APP (Approach Control Service) showed no differences in the number of completed categories and in perseverative errors.DISCUSSION:The executive brain functioning of the ATCs, such as mental flexibility, strategic planning and inhibitory control, were identified as being above average when compared to the general population. While alterations in work shifts appear to have a negative (but nonsignificant) impact, newer ATCs showed stronger scores than more experienced ATCs on the WCST. Absenteeism and Delay to Work Due to Sleep Disorders in the Turkish Adult Population: A Questionnaire-Based National Survey

Sleep problems may have negative effects on work-life balance, overall health, and safety. We aimed to investigate the association between sleep disorders and absenteeism and delay to work (being late or tardy) among the working adult population. The study was conducted by using data from a large survey of working adults who participated in the Turkish Adult Population Epidemiology of Sleep Study (TAPES) managed by Turkish Sleep Medicine Society (TSMS). Secondary analyses was employed to examine absenteeism and delay to work and their associations with sleep problems, including sleepiness by Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), parasomnias, sleep apnea (by Berlin Questionnaire), sleep quality (by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and restless leg. History of any absenteeism and delay to work was observed in 276 (18%) and 443 (29%) out of 1,533 working adults, respectively. In the multivariate analyses, absenteeism was associated with younger age, female gender and poor sleep quality, while delay to work was associated with younger age, poor sleep quality, parasomnia, and sleepiness. In the presence of absenteeism and delay to work, sleep disorders including sleepiness, poor sleep quality, and parasomnia should be considered. Such evaluation may improve worker well-being and provide some additional benefits in terms of increasing productivity and lowering work-related costs.

Avaliação do Sono em um Grupo de Policiais Militares de Elite

Resumo Objetivo Estudar os distúrbios do sono em um Grupo de Policiais Militares de Elite. Método Estudo transversal, que avaliou 22 policiais militares de elite da Brigada Militar, o que corresponde a totalidade do efetivo operacional do grupo estudado. Resultados Os principais achados deste estudo foram quatro. Primeiro, observou-se uma elevada prevalência de distúrbios do sono (100% apresentaram algum distúrbio ou queixa relacionada ao sono) e de má qualidade de sono (63,6%) entre esses policiais. Segundo, observou-se uma elevada prevalência (27,3%) de síndrome da apneia obstrutiva do sono entre os policiais estudados sendo que estes apresentaram maior sonolência diurna. Terceiro, dentre os policiais que apresentaram algum acidente de trabalho constatou-se uma maior prevalência de sonolência diurna, de má qualidade do sono e de síndrome da apneia obstrutiva do sono. Quarto, policiais com má qualidade de sono apresentaram piores escores de qualidade de vida. Conclusão Considerando-se a elevada prevalência de distúrbios do sono entre os policiais militares e as diversas consequências advindas de um sono de má qualidade, sugere-se a inclusão de questões relacionadas ao sono, de questionários de triagem para distúrbios do sono e dependendo do caso, do exame de polissonografia, dentro da inspeção bienal de saúde dos Policiais Militares de Elite.
