The McGill Illness Narrative Interview - MINI: translation and cross-cultural adaptation into Portuguese

Pesquisa participativa sob a lógica do cuidado: análise compartilhada em um CAPS AD

A pesquisa procurou explorar as experiências de adoecimento com base no ponto de vista dos usuários de um CAPS AD III. A metodologia empregada neste estudo se baseia em um desenho qualitativo e se divide em duas etapas. Na primeira, foi realizada uma entrevista semiestruturada com os participantes — Entrevista Narrativa de Adoecimento McGill-MINI —, e, na segunda, os participantes foram parte integrante do processo de validação, análise dos resultados e elaboração do arcabouço temário. Os resultados anunciam narrativas atravessadas por desamparo psíquico, abandono familiar, perdas e falta de credibilidade, efeito de um processo excludente em que a droga se sobrepõe ao sujeito. A pesquisa participativa sob a lógica do cuidado (Tangvald-Pedersen & Bongaardt, 2016) possibilitou um diálogo reflexivo acerca da experiência de adoecimento aproximando pesquisadores e participantes, que são como diferentes contadores de histórias, permitindo que a tessitura do fenômeno descrito pudesse enriquecer a compreensão uns dos outros.

Narratives about the Experience of Mental Illness: the recovery Process in Brazil

This paper analyzes ten recovery narratives of people with a serious mental illness who received mental health services in the public health care system of the city of Campinas, Brazil. We describe the person's recovery process and their relationship with the clinical services they received. This is a very needed conversation because the incorporation of recovery and recovering citizenship concepts in clinical practice are still incipient in South America. Most importantly, this research adds to the dialogue around recovering citizenship in different cultures.

METHODS

We used phenomenological methodology to interpret data drawn from the participant's life course interview (using the McGill Illness Narrative Interview).

RESULTS

We found that a) Before receiving services, people were overwhelmed by symptoms, but did not know what was going on; b) Loved ones and clinicians explained symptoms as part of a mental illness, and the proposed treatment was largely accepted; c) Mental health treatment was seen as helpful but not enough to address what was meaningful for their lives; d) People regained a life in their community, they felt proud of their recovery process, and solidarity and collectivism seemed to play important roles in their recovery process.

DISCUSSION

We identified similarities and differences in the recovery process of people with serious mental illness receiving public mental health services in Campinas, Brazil, when compared to the international literature. Receiving mental health services was very helpful for participants, principally when feeling overwhelmed by symptoms. Mental health services seemed to be less effective in helping people regain a meaningful life in their communities. Solidarity from friends and family members was recognized as an important recovery asset.

ODD. Religiosity and mental suffering experiences of users of the Brazilian public healthcare system

This article aimed to investigate the relationship between religiosity and mental suffering experiences among users of the Brazilian public healthcare system, according to the cultural phenomenology framework. Its specific objective was to investigate the means by which the transformation of experience occurs. The study’s design consisted of semi-structured interviews, applying the MINI - McGill Illness Narratives Interview. The results led to the construction of the following categories: causal factors, suffering experiences, healing practices, social support and positive transformation of the experience. The effects of religiosity on mental suffering experiences were predominantly positive, such as in religious rituals, social support and protection against suicide. The main healing mechanisms involved were embracement, symbolic and bodily processes, similarly to psychosocial approaches within professional ethnopsychiatries

The narrative field in Journal Ciência & Saúde Coletiva

This paper analyzes Journal Ciência & Saúde Coletiva's approach to the narrative field. The concept of "narrative field" is built on the relationships of three dimensions, namely, the cognitive (epistemic), the socio-political-pedagogical, and the applied. This is an analytical, quantitative, and qualitative research of authors, themes, theoretical and methodological approaches, concepts, and disciplines. The search on the SciELO database was developed in two stages: 1. Context - Restricted to the health publications, research on 29/01/2019, with the Portuguese descriptor "narrativa" + "saúde" (without filter); 2. Bibliometric research - data collected in December 2019 using descriptor "narrative" + "ciência e saúde coletiva", period 2002-2019. No reference was found in the searched journal before 2002. In the analysis of the 43 texts, the keywords were grouped into narrative analyses, narrative reviews, narrative texts, biography, and translation. We conclude by affirming the relevance of the theme, despite the small number of works, and suggest scholars emphasize in future works the theoretical approaches of narrative work and demarcate their perspectives, as an approach or an object, or both.

Cross-cultural adaptation of the recovery self-assessment instrument (RSA–R) person in recovery version to Brazilian Portuguese (Pt/Br)

Purpose

The Recovery Self-Assessment (RSA–R) in Revised Version is an instrument designed to assess the degree to which mental health programs and services implement recovery-oriented practices. The purpose of this paper is to conduct a cross-cultural adaptation of the RSA–R instrument for use in local mental health services in the city of Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil.

Design/methodology/approach

This method for cross-cultural adaptation of the instrument included a series of iterative steps including preparation, translation, back translation, harmonization, expert evaluation, focus groups, in-depth interviews, expert opinion and pilot study.

Findings

A multi-rater assessment of the equivalence of content between the original RSA–R and the translated version revealed that each of the 32 items achieved at least 88% agreement in terms of equivalency. A multi-step harmonization process revealed additional suggestions for improvements in readability, comprehension and applicability to Brazilian context. An expert in youth and adult education provided additional stylistic recommendations. Combined, this iterative approach to cross-cultural translation resulted in an adapted version of the instrument that was well understood, culturally appropriate and adequate for further verification of psychometric properties.

Originality/value

The recovery process in Brazil and in the USA has culturally determined differences in terms of the way mental disorders are understood, diagnosed and treated. Moreover, there are different notions of what constitutes desirable results of recovery, health care and welfare. At the present time, there are few, if any, available cross-cultural instruments to assess the recovery-orientation of services between Brazil and the USA.

Validação da escala de atitude em tecnologias digitais da informação e comunicação

Resumo Objetivo: Validar uma escala que identifica a atitude de acadêmicos, dos cursos de ciências da saúde, quanto ao uso de tecnologias digitais da informação e comunicação. Métodos: Estudo metodológico, realizado com 292 acadêmicos dos cursos de ciências biológicas, enfermagem, nutrição e medicina, e aplicado a Escala de Atitude em Tecnologias Digitais da Informação e Comunicação para a Saúde com 14 itens. A validação ocorreu por intermédio de um comitê de especialistas envoltos na criação da tradução da versão em língua portuguesa, validação interna, adaptação cultural. Seguida ainda para pré-teste, e, pós-teste, por meio de analise fatorial exploratória, consistência e representabilidade dos componentes da escala. Resultados: Foram validados 14 itens, todos apresentando adequabilidade de constructo, conforme medida de adequabilidade de 0,80 e p<0,000. Ainda, as analises fatoriais produziram uma solução de dois fatores, constructos positivos e negativos, o que permite melhor identificar as atitudes dos acadêmicos. Conclusão: A escala apresentou valores de adequabilidade acima da media para este tipo de instrumento, mostrando ser efetiva para a mensuração do objeto proposto, fornecendo assim, um inovador meio de pesquisas neste campo de atuação.

Translation of the Parental Inventory “Language Use Inventory” into Brazilian Portuguese

ABSTRACT Purpose To translate and adapt the assessment tool Language Use Inventory from English to Brazilian Portuguese. Methods The study was carried out in two stages. Once the publisher’s authorization was given, the process of translation and back-translation of the protocol was initiated, adapting it to sociocultural aspects, such as expressions, names, and adequate examples in Brazilian Portuguese. In order to investigate the internal reliability of the translation process, the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used. The second stage was a pilot study, in which the questionnaire was applied to 43 parents of children from 24 to 47 months old from a city in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The results were analyzed according to the total score and to the subscales of the questionnaire. The variables age range and parental level of education were also analyzed. Results The analysis using the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient showed high internal consistency (α>0,98) in almost all the subscales which means that the instrument adapted to Brazilian Portuguese can be used. In the pilot study, an age effect was found in the total score and in the LUI subscale scores, i.e., the older the children, the fewer gestures they used, with more words and syntactic constructions. Conclusion The Brazilian-Portuguese version of the LUI questionnaire seems to be a reliable translation of the original and a reliable instrument to evaluate preschoolers’ language pragmatics. After future detailed analyses, it will allow early diagnosis and intervention in children with language disorders.
