Abstract
Due to the pathological production of liver disease in utility particularly complexity, the morbidity and mortality of liver disease including viral hepatitis, liver fibrosis/cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are rapidly increasing worldwide. Considering its insidious onset, rapid progression and drug resistance, finding an effective therapy is particularly worthwhile. Phyllanthus urinaria L. (P. urinaria), an ethnic medicine, can be applied at the stages of viral hepatitis, liver fibrosis/cirrhosis and HCC, which demonstrates great potential in the treatment of liver disease. Currently, there are numerous reports on the application of P. urinaria in treating liver diseases, but a detailed analysis of its metabolites and a complete summary of its pharmacological mechanism are still scarce. In this review, the phytochemical metabolites and ethnopharmacological applications of P. urinaria are summarized. Briefly, P. urinaria mainly contains flavonoids, lignans, tannins, phenolic acids, terpenoids and other metabolites. The mechanisms of P. urinaria are mainly reflected in reducing surface antigen secretion and interfering with DNA polymerase synthesis for anti-viral hepatitis activity, reducing hepatic stellate cells activity, inflammation and oxidative stress for anti-liver fibrosis/cirrhosis activity, as well as preventing tumor proliferation, invasion and angiogenesis for anti-HCC activity via relevant signaling pathways. Accordingly, this review provides insights into the future application of natural products in the trilogy of liver diseases and will provide a scientific basis for further research and rational utilization of P. urinaria.

Abstract
Malachite green (MG) is highly toxic, persistent, and carcinogenic, and its widespread use is a danger to the ecosystem and a threat to public health and food safety, making it necessary to develop new sensitive multimode molecular spectroscopy methods. In this work, a new copper-based nanomaterial (CuNM) was prepared by a high-temperature roasting using a copper metal-organic framework (CuMOF) as precursor. The as-prepared CuNM was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and BET surface area analysis. CuNM was found to catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H2O2 to produce the oxidation product TMBOX; however, subsequently, the MG aptamer (Apt) could be adsorbed on the CuNM surface by intermolecular interaction, which would inhibit the catalytic performance. After the addition of MG to be tested, the CuNM previously adsorbed by the Apt was transformed into its free state, thus restoring its catalytic activity. This new nanocatalytic indicator reaction could be monitored by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)/resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS)/fluorescence (FL)/absorption (Abs) quadruple-mode methods. The SERS determination range was 0.004-0.4 nmol L-1 MG, with a limit of detection of 0.0032 nM. In this way, a rapid, stable, and sensitive method for the determination of MG residues in the environment was established.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) on the isolation of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and antioxidants from dill. UAE improved the extraction yields of total phenolic compounds and total flavonoid content as well as increased the antioxidant activities of all dill extracts. The optimum UAE condition to obtain highest total phenolic compounds, total flavonoid content, and antioxidant activities was 50% ethanol for 30 min giving 135.88 ± 3.23 mg gallic acid equivalent/g extract and 229.53 ± 4.97 mg rutin equivalent/g extract, respectively. Lowest IC50 values against 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals were 0.034 ± 0.00 mg/mL and 0.12 ± 0.00 mg/mL, respectively. Results indicated the capability of UAE in extracting biologically active compounds from dill as a prospective functional material.

Abstract
Background The pulp of hog plum (Spondias pinnata L. f. kurz) has been documented as a potential source of nutritional, physiological, and pharmacological purposes due to its phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity. However, an optimal extraction condition for hog plum pulp remains elusive. Optimization of extraction process conditions using Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) technique has recently attracted research interest. Objectives The present study focused on optimizing the UAE extraction conditions of TPC and antioxidant activities (DPPH and FRAP) from hog plum pulp by using response surface methodology (RSM). Methods The RSM with a three-factor-three-level Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used to optimize the extraction conditions. The BBD was used to investigate the effects of three independent variables, X1: ultrasonic temperature (40-60 °C), X2: ultrasonic time (30-60 min), and X3: ethanol concentration (40-80%) on TPC, DPPH and FRAP assays. Fifteen experimental trials have been carried out to optimize the UAE extraction conditions. A second-order polynomial model was used for predicting the responses. Statistically, the model was validated using an analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results The ANOVA results revealed that UAE extraction temperature, time, and ethanol concentration had a significant (p < 0.01) influence on the TPC, DPPH, and FRAP, suggesting that all extraction parameters included in this investigation were crucial to the optimization process. For TPC, DPPH, and FRAP, the R2 values were 0.9976, 0.9943, and 0.9989, respectively, indicating that the models developed based on second-order polynomials were satisfactorily accurate for analyzing interactions between parameters (response and independent variables). RSM analysis showed that the optimal extraction parameters which maximized TPC, DPPH, and FRAP were 52.03 °C temperature, 30 min, time, and 79.99% ethanol. Under optimal conditions, experimental values for TPC, DPPH, and FRAP were 370 ± 26 mg GAE/100g DM, 57 ± 7%, and 7650 ± 460 mg AAE/100 g DM, respectively. The experimental values showed a good agreement with the predicted values with residual standard error values below 0.2% under optimum conditions. Pearson's correlation coefficients (r) demonstrate that the TPC showed a weak positive correlation with DPPH (r = 0.3508) and moderate correlation with FRAP (r = 0.3963). Conclusion The experimental results agreed with the predicted values, confirming the model's appropriateness and RSM's efficacy in optimizing the UAE extraction conditions. This optimized UAE extraction method may be effective in the industrial extraction process; moreover, further research should be conducted to determine the efficacy of these extracts when applied to food.

Abstract
Ellagic acid is a phenolic compound that exhibits both antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic activity in a wide range of assays in vitro and in vivo. It occurs naturally in some foods such as raspberries, strawberries, grapes, and black currants. In this study, a valid and reliable method based on mechanochemical-assisted extraction (MCAE) and macroporous adsorption resin was developed to extract and prepare ellagic acid from Phyllanthus urinaria L. (PUL). The MCAE parameters, acidolysis, and macroporous adsorption resin conditions were investigated. The key MCAE parameters were optimized as follows: the milling time was 5 min, the ball mill speed was 100 rpm, and the ball mill filling rate was 20.9%. Sulfuric acid with a concentration of 0.552 mol/L was applied for the acidolysis with the optimized acidolysis time of 30 min and acidolysis temperature of 40 °C. Additionally, the XDA-8D macroporous resin was chosen for the purification work. Both the static and dynamic adsorption tests were carried out. Under the optimized conditions, the yield of ellagic acid was 10.2 mg/g, and the content was over 97%. This research provided a rapid and efficient method for the preparation of ellagic acid from the cheaply and easily obtained PUL. Meanwhile, it is relatively low-cost work that can provide a technical basis for the comprehensive utilization of PUL.

Abstract
Moringa oleifera is a medicinal plant, and its seed oil is known to have high antioxidant properties. The byproduct obtained after oil extraction is called Moringa oleifera seed meal (MoSM), whose potential bioactivity has not been sufficiently documented. Therefore, this study was undertaken with the aim of identifying Moringa oleifera seed meal extract (ME) as a natural antibacterial and antioxidant alternative. First, the effect of solvent extraction of MoSM with 60% (v/v) ethanol combined with ultrasound (UAE) was determined at the sample-to-solvent ratio of 1: 10, with different time and power combinations of UAE. The lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) exhibited by ME at 200 W and 20 min (ME200/20) against both Escherichia coli among the gram-negative bacteria and Bacillus cereus among the gram-positive bacteria was 3.12 mg/g. The leakage of intracellular constituents as well as the damage of the B. cereus cells after being treated with ME were confirmed by measuring the absorbance of the supernatant at 260 and 280 nm and observation of the cells under a scanning electron microscope. Moreover, the highest total phenolic content was also recorded with ME200/20 at 460 mg gallic acid equivalent/g of extract, and the subsequent significantly higher (p < 0.05) antioxidant activity was determined to be 11.18 and 9.20 mg acetic acid equivalent/g of extract by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and ferric reducing antioxidant power assays, respectively. The high-performance liquid chromatography results showed that gallic acid and vanillic acid were predominantly present in the extract, followed by quercetin, sinapic acid and chlorogenic acid. Interestingly, caffeic acid appeared in the sample treated with UAE only. The extract was finally applied with a chitosan-based coating to evaluate the antimicrobial activity against E. coli and B. cereus on raw chicken sausages in the concentration range of 1-5%. Incorporating 3% extract could inactivate B. cereus and E. coli for a 1.4 log reduction on day 3 and a 1.78 log reduction on day 6 of storage and, further, could significantly suppress the growth of both bacteria until day 9. Thus, this study confirmed the strong antibacterial and antioxidant properties of ME and its potential use in real food systems as a natural food antibacterial agent.

Abstract
Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was used to extract anthocyanins, antioxidants and phenolic compounds from butterfly pea petals, as an alternative to traditional methods. Taguchi method with three factors: extraction time (30, 45, 60 min), temperature (40, 60, 80 °C) and liquid-solid ratio (5, 7.5, 10 mL distilled water/mg butterfly pea) was used to obtain the high extraction yield. Grey relational analysis was employed to convert multi-response problem into single response optimization. The high extraction efficiency could be achieved at optimal parameter condition using 45 min of extraction time, 40 °C and 10 ml distilled water/mg butterfly pea. Liquid-solid ratio exhibited the highest contribution for anthocyanin and total phenolic content. A high temperature of ultrasonication resulted in a negative effect on antioxidant capacity and total phenolic content. The findings from this study indicated that the UAE process optimization would be an efficient and sustainable method for the preparation of bioactive compounds from medical plants with saving of reaction time and cost in which extraction yields of antioxidant capacity and total phenolic content were also increased. The color response analysis results suggested that the gelatin film incorporated with butterfly pea extract can be potentially used as pH-indicator for detecting food spoilage for intelligent packaging.
