Correlation between general quality of life and oral health related quality in the mixed dentition

The aim of this study was to evaluate the convergence between the domains of the Autoquestionnaire Qualité de Vie Enfant image (AUQUEI) and the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ8-10) in the mixed dentition. A sample of 676 children aged 8 to 10 years responded to the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) questionnaires using the AUQUEI and the CPQ8-10, respectively. Clinical (dental caries and malocclusion) and socioeconomic variables were assessed. The validity of convergence between scores (total and per domain) of the two instruments was assessed by Spearman correlation analysis, considering that non-zero coefficient values represented a correlation between scores. The median was calculated to compare the scores of each questionnaire relative to the variables, and the nonparametric Mann-Whitney test was applied to determine statistically significant differences between the categories. A weak significant correlation (between 0.30 and 0.50) was observed between the domains and the total scores of instruments (p < 0.05), except for the leisure domain (p > 0.05). Participants with a lower family income had worse HRQoL (p < 0.05), and those with caries and malocclusion experience had worse OHRQoL (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the AUQUEI and CPQ8-10 instruments showed a weak correlation. Income and clinical variables had a negative impact on the AUQUEI and CPQ8-10, respectively.

Does malocclusion affect ingestion: a systematic review

OBJECTIVES

The multifactorial aspect of malocclusions and their consequences on ingestion function is rarely described in the literature. The aims of this review are (i) to investigate the relationship between oral ingestion and malocclusion and (ii) to gather malocclusion tools that could help screen subjects at risk of malocclusion-related ingestion disorders.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A systematic review was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocol (PRISMA-P 2015) guidelines. The analysis methods and inclusion criteria have been documented in a protocol published in the Prospective International Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) under the registration number CRD42023395840. The bibliographic search involved the PubMed®, Cochrane and PROSPERO databases.

RESULTS

A total of 29 articles published between 2007 and 2023 were retained by the search criteria for the qualitative synthesis. Twenty of the studies found that the severity of malocclusion has a negative impact on oral ingestion. This review highlights that malocclusion and ingestion impairments are associated but it is not possible to determine causality due to the observational approach of many of the studies.

CONCLUSION

Malocclusion has a negative impact on ingestion function. During orthodontic consultations, particular interest should be directed towards chewing, biting, and swallowing disorders, which can affect patients' nutritional status. This review offers arguments for designing further studies assessing the extent to which malocclusions may affect nutritional status.

Orthodontic treatment should focus on improving patients' ingestion.

A reliability generalization meta-analysis of Child Oral Impacts on Daily Performances (C - OIDP) questionnaire

AIM

To evaluate the cumulative estimates of reliability and conduct reliability generalization meta-analysis of Cronbach's alpha for the Child Oral Impacts on Daily Performances (C-OIDP) questionnaire.

METHODOLOGY

Systematic search of four databases from inception to November 30th, 2019 was performed. Studies that reported Cronbach alpha for the C-OIDP were included. Cronbach's alpha for each publication was used for the meta-analysis. I² and Q statistics were calculated to assess heterogeneity. Meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model to derive a pooled estimate of Cronbach's alpha.

RESULTS

Out of 944 publications, data extraction was done from 33 publications after exclusion. The age range among the included publication was from 6 to 19 years. Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.53 to 0.9. Majority of the publications (n = 21) reported alpha above the benchmark (0.7 and above). Only two publications used condition-specific C-OIDP questionnaires. Twelve publications used self-administered child-OIDP questionnaires. Most of the studies were at a low risk of bias (n = 29). The cumulative alpha was higher in publications with a low ROB (α = 0.74) than a moderate ROB (α = 0.65) The cumulative alpha was 0.73 (SE = 0.02) with a high heterogeneity among the included publications (I² = 99.28% and Q = 2048.68; P < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Overall, the RG estimate of Cronbach's alpha for C-OIDP was above the widely accepted benchmark.

Do malocclusion and orthodontic treatment impact oral health? A systematic review and meta-analysis

INTRODUCTION

Currently, there is limited evidence on the effects of malocclusion on oral health and whether the correction of malocclusion results in an improvement in oral health. In this review, we examined the evidence from randomized controlled trials and prospective cohort studies to provide information on any association between malocclusion and oral health and the effects of orthodontic treatment.

METHODS

We conducted this review in 2 parts: (1) we looked at the impact of malocclusion on oral health, and (2) we reviewed the evidence on the effect of orthodontic treatment on oral health. We searched for randomized controlled trials and prospective cohort studies. The searches were completed for articles published between January 1, 1990 and October 8, 2018 and covered Medline via Ovid, Embase, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. References of included articles and previous systematic reviews were hand-searched. No language restrictions were applied. Two members of the study team assessed the quality of the studies using the Appraisal Tool for Cross-Sectional Studies to appraise the quality of studies in part 1. The assessment was performed at the study level. Two authors assessed each study independently, with a third author consulted when a disagreement occurred. For studies in part 2, we used the Newcastle-Ottawa scale to assess the risk of bias. When studies were included in a Cochrane review, we incorporated the risk of bias assessment. We developed data extraction forms for each area of oral health under investigation (trauma, quality of life, caries, and periodontal disease). Each author piloted the form, and we held discussions to inform any necessary refinements. We extracted data from studies into 2 × 2 tables, which provided a binary analysis of malocclusion vs the outcome of interest. If these data were not available from the published paper, then studies were not included in the meta-analysis. The authors were contacted when possible to request data in this format.

RESULTS

For part 1 of the study, we identified 87 studies. The overall quality was low. We could not include any of the data into an analysis because of a large variation in the nature of the studies, data collected, and outcome measures that were selected. For part 2 of the study, we found 7 studies; however, there were similar deficiencies in the data as in part 1, and thus, we could not reach any strong conclusions.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, there is an absence of published evidence regarding the effects of malocclusion on oral health and the impact of orthodontic treatment on oral health.
