[Epidemiological aspects of fatal occupational accidents in Campinas, S.P. (Brazil), 1972-1978]

Mortality by road traffic accidents in adolescents and young people, Brazil, 1996-2015: will we achieve SDG 3.6?

This paper aims to analyze the main characteristics of Road Traffic Accidents (RTA) mortality in Brazil for the period 1996-2015, focusing on the 10-29 years' age group. This is a two-step study consisting of (i) a bibliographic review on the topic of traffic violence in Brazil, and (ii) a study on RTA mortality in the Mortality Information System (SIM). The former situates the state of the art of scientific production on the theme and produces the theoretical reference for the analysis of the latter. During the period, about 39,000 people died by RTA, of which about 13,200 adolescents and young people died. The country should curb mortality to somewhere around 19,500/year and, among adolescents and young people, to 6,500/year to achieve SDG 3.6. With the establishment of the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB), RTA mortality rate fell between 1997 and 2000. The rate increased in the subsequent decade. The focus on adolescents and young people help us understand that, in the post-CTB and Prohibition, male black and brown motorcyclists became the main victims. The literature provides data analysis and shows that reduction is currently submitted to an articulated discussion that involves worker's health, gender, employment, urban mobility and advertising policies. Concerning SDG, this means that achieving SDG 3.6 is a process that involves interacting with policies targeting other SDGs.

[Characteristics of the patients with head injury assisted at the Hospital das Clinicas of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School]

The chart of 3468 patients with head injury assisted in the Hospital das Clínicas-Ribeirão Preto Medical School, from 1990 through 1992 were analyzed aiming to determine their main characteristics. Regarding sex, there was predominance of male. Accidental fall among children and traffic accidents among adults were the main causes of trauma. Daily distribution of assistance revealed an increase between 8 and 12 PM and during the week there was a constant flow from Tuesday to Friday and progressively increased on Saturday to Sunday. Approximately 75% of the patients presented mild head injury (score equal or superior to 13 in the Glasgow Coma Scale). Headache among children and vomiting, headache and alcoholic abuse among adults were the most frequent signs and symptoms at admission. At discharge 87.2% of patients had no symptoms and mortality was 5.7%. Peculiarities of head injury in Ribeirão Preto are discussed.

Acidentes de trabalho: uma expressão da violência social

O objetivo principal deste estudo é relacionar violência e processo de trabalho. Tem como pressuposto que o elevado índice de acidentes de trabalho existente no Brasil caracteriza uma forma de violência estrutural nos locais de trabalho. Este quadro é situado no contexto internacional, a partir de dados de diversos setores econômicos. Discutem-se as informações provenientes dos registros da Previdência Social e dos atestados de óbito. Em aparente contraste com os dados internacionais, as estatísticas brasileiras mostram que os acidentes resultantes de atividades externas às empresas, em particular os de trânsito, são as maiores causas de morte no trabalho. São examinadas também questões relativas à qualidade dos registros e à classificação dos diversos tipos de acidente.

[Epidemiology of fatal occupational accidents in a metropolitan area of the southeastern region of Brazil, 1979-1989]

Campinas is an important industrial centre in the State of S. Paulo, Brazil. 476 registers filed at the Campinas agency of the Brazilian National Social-Welfore Institution, covering the Campinas, Cosmópolis, Paulínia, Sumaré and Valinhos Counties from 1979 to 1989, were analysed. The information obtained from the Notifications of Work Accidents, (C.A.T.), police reports (B.O.) and death certificates, Work accidents were studied on the basis of according to characteristics of the enterprise, concerned the worker involved and the accident itself. Using data from the Ministry of Labour on the number of registered workers by economic activity and occupation, estimates of work accident risk were obtained. The Incidence Density was greater for carpenters (94.3 deaths per 100,000 workers/year), followed by drivers of vehicle (69.6) and "bricklayers" (63.3). Compared to the technicians, the probability of death for these categories was three to five times greater (ratio of Incidence Density). The Construction (22.1%) and Transport (14.9%) sectors, the economic sectors most affected in terms of mortality, presented high Incidence Densities: 59.8 and 57.3 deaths for 100,000 workers/year, respectively, when compared to Retail Commerce (9.4).

[The impact of occupational effects on worker's health. II. Mortality]

Foi realizada revisão bibliográfica analítica com o objetivo de quantificar o impacto dos efeitos da ocupação sobre a mortalidade de trabalhadores em suas implicações sobre o setor saúde. As repercussões sobre a mortalidade de trabalhadores são medidas através das mortes diretamente relacionadas com o trabalho (acidentes do trabalho fatais e intoxicações fatais) e das indiretamente relacionadas. Partindo das grandes causas de morte entre adultos - doenças cardiovasculares, câncer e mortes violentas - e explorando as informações obtidas em estudos epidemiológicos realizados em outros países, estimou-se a força da contribuição da ocupação sobre a mortalidade. O peso e a complexidade das repercussões sobre o setor saúde pressupõem um desempenho mais ativo na definição de políticas e responsabilidades, e na organização de ações destinadas a identificar, reduzir ou eliminar a participação dos riscos ocupacionais nas grandes causas de doença e morte.

[The impact of occupational effects on workers' health. I. Morbidity]

Realizou-se revisão bibliográfica crítica, com o propósito de estimar o impacto dos efeitos da ocupação sobre a morbidade de trabalhadores para, a partir de tal exercício, inferir as implicações sobre o setor saúde. As repercussões sobre a morbidade foram medidas através dos dados sobre acidentes do trabalho, intoxicações agudas profissionais e doenças profissionais. Foram ainda incluídas outras "doenças relacionadas com o trabalho", exemplificadas com a hipertensão arterial, doenças respiratórias crônicas, doenças do aparelho locomotor, distúrbios mentais e estresse.
