Occupational risks and their implications for the health of poultry farmers

BACKGROUND

Poultry activity exposes workers to accidents and unhealthy conditions with physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic and psychological risks.

OBJECTIVE

The objective was to list risk factors in poultry farms in operational, behavioral, and environmental aspects.

METHODS

We evaluated poultry farm workers through quantitative and qualitative analysis applying a semi-structured online questionnaire containing 58 questions to identify risks in the workplace and health implications.

RESULTS

Most facilities were air-conditioned, workers performed their activities in a totally closed environment, with low light (1 to 10 lux), for more than 40 h/wk. Regarding accidents, 61%of workers claimed to have suffered some type of accident, 34%claimed to not use personal protection equipment, and 41%felt unable to perform their activities at some time due to health problems; handling animals and animal waste were the most significant biological risks; dust and ammonia corresponded to the most significant chemical risks; and electric shock, burns, and heat exposure were the most significant physical/accident risks.

CONCLUSIONS

Workers expose themselves daily to physical, chemical, biological, psychosocial, and ergonomic risks. These exposures often lead to symptoms such as stress, headache, eye and mucous membrane disorders, respiratory diseases, back and muscle pain, depression, and symptoms often associated with Sick Building Syndrome.

A produção científica sobre o ambiente na saúde coletiva

Embora existam poucos estudos sobre a incorporação do tema ambiente na saúde coletiva, há indicações que apontam para a institucionalização deste tema nas linhas de pesquisas dos grupos de pesquisas e programas de pós-graduação, bem como na formação de pesquisadores qualificados, se consolidando na produção científica. Este estudo tem como objetivo compreender como este tema vem sendo incorporado na saúde coletiva, fornecendo assim subsídios para a conformação de uma ciência orientada para o desenvolvimento sustentável do ambiente e da saúde coletiva. Para atingir este objetivo foi realizado um levantamento e análise da produção científica sobre o tema ambiente em quatro das principais revistas científicas nacionais, no período 1992-2002, tendo como referência a primeira área de programa do capítulo da Agenda 21 dedicado à ciência para o desenvolvimento sustentável. Os resultados apontam para uma produção científica concentrada nas instituições da Região Sudeste; centrada em noções biológicas da saúde e biofísicas do ambiente; predominando os estudos de diagnóstico, com poucos incorporando a busca de soluções e pequeno número de estudos em que se prevê a participação dos diferentes atores envolvidos com os problemas ambientais.

Association of air-conditioning with respiratory symptoms in office workers in tropical climate

To evaluate the association of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems (HVAC) and respiratory symptoms in a tropical city, self-administered questionnaires were given to 2000 individuals working in air-conditioned office buildings and to 500 control workers in naturally ventilated buildings. Reported symptoms from the two populations were analyzed using chi-square tests, univariate and multiple logistic regressions models. Symptoms were the outcome variable and the odds ratios were adjusted by gender, age, accumulated work time, smoking habits and atopic background. There was a 79.8% response rate and there was a positive association of nasal symptoms (odds ratio, OR = 1.59, 95% confidence interval, CI = 1.11-2.28), naso-ocular symptoms (OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.05-2.38), persistent cough (OR = 3.04, 95% CI = 2.00-4.63) sinusitis symptoms (OR = 1.85, 95% CI = 1.27-2.71) and building-related worsening of the symptoms (OR = 4.92, 95% CI = 2.93-8.27) with working in air-conditioned buildings. In conclusion, our study suggests that artificial air-conditioning is a matter of concern for respiratory symptoms in cities with hot and humid climate.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

This study suggests that indoor air-related respiratory symptoms are a matter of concern in places with hot and humid climate. The regression models were adjusted by confounders that could be used in further reanalysis of indoor air quality related symptoms and ventilation systems with expanded variety of climatic conditions.

Considerações sobre estudos de ambientes industriais e não industriais no Brasil: uma abordagem comparativa

A qualidade do ar em ambientes industriais tem sido palco de estudos desde a segunda metade do século XX. Resultados bem documentados apontaram que a exposição prolongada a poluentes químicos, proveniente do consumo, produção, armazenamento etc., pode causar danos à saúde do trabalhador. Recentemente, estudos direcionados a ambientes não industriais mostraram correlações surpreendentes entre a qualidade do ar e os efeitos causados à saúde. O sistema de ventilação artificial tem sido a principal causa de reclamações e de um alto índice de absenteísmo. Os sintomas relacionados com a qualidade do ar em ambientes não industriais são reconhecidos pela Organização Mundial da Saúde que os identifica como "Síndrome dos Edifícios Doentes". No Brasil, há poucos estudos relacionando qualidade do ar em ambientes fechados e saúde. O presente trabalho pretende mapear as pesquisas já realizadas no País, visando, com isso, incentivar novos estudos nessa área, em virtude de sua importância para a saúde da população.

Effect of ventilation systems on prevalence of symptoms associated with "sick buildings" in Brazilian commercial establishments

In this questionnaire study, the authors compared the prevalence of certain symptoms and signs associated with Sick Building Syndrome and perceptions relative to environmental discomfort of employees in a central-air-conditioned dropping center and in natural-ventilation commercial shops located on the streets of Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There was a statistically significant higher prevalence of symptoms (e.g., water and itching of eyes, sore throat, nose irritation, difficulty breathing, skin irritation, sneezing) that were characteristic of Sick Building Syndrome in the air-conditioned building than in the naturally ventilated stores. The results indicated that there exists a continuing need for further research in Brazilian work environments.
