Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the profile and survival in young adults with oral squamous cell carcinoma, attended at the High Complexity in Oncology of Feira de Santana, Brazil, between 2010 and 2016. METHODS Retrospective cohort, performed through the information of the medical records of all young patients attended in the referred center. Descriptive analysis of the variables, Fisher's exact test, Kaplan-Meier curve and log-rank test were performed. RESULTS A total of 35 patients were registered. The majority were male, smokers and former alcoholics. Tumors were predominantly localized in the tongue, diagnosed at late stages, classified as well differentiated and treated mainly with surgery associated to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The median survival time was 31 months and 22.8% of the patients died. The variables that presented statistical significance in relation to the survival time were the tumor site and the type of treatment. CONCLUSION The profile and low survival time reflect the need for greater attention to the disease in this population.

Abstract
The incidence profile of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has not previously been comprehensively reported in Indonesia. The present study aimed to identify clinicopathological characteristics of patients with OSCC according to sex and age, to analyze histological differentiation patterns specific to tumor subsites, to highlight the role of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in metastasis, and to develop a model to predict advanced stage and margin invasion. A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed using 581 medical records and pathological specimens from cancer registry data in the Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (Jakarta, Indonesia), between January 2011 and December 2020. Clinicopathological characteristics were analyzed using parametric and non-parametric tests. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed for eligible parameters, identified using bivariate analysis, to predict advanced stage and margin invasion. Calibration of the prediction model was evaluated using the Hosmer-Lemeshow test, its discrimination value assessed using the receiver operating characteristic and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Sex-specific patterns in tumor subsites and differences in clinical staging according to age were demonstrated in the patients with OSCC. The proportion of well-differentiated cases was significantly higher in most tumor subsites, except in the buccal mucosa (more moderately differentiated cases) and floor of the mouth (well and moderately differentiated cases being equal). LVI was significantly associated with nodal metastasis but not distant metastasis. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that age ≤45 years [odds ratio (OR), 2.26] and LVI (OR, 8.42) predicted patients having advanced-stage OSCC among general populations (AUC, 0.773); however, LVI (OR, 8.28) was the sole predictor of advanced stage amongst young patients (AUC, 0.737). Margin invasion was predicted solely by tumor subsite, including mouth not otherwise specified (OR, 3.04) and palate (OR, 6.13), in the general population (AUC, 0.711). Furthermore, margin invasion was predicted by the palate subsite (OR, 38.77) and LVI (OR, 11.61) in young patients (AUC, 0.762). Investigating young patients thoroughly when finding SCC in the mouth and palate, and assessing LVI, especially among young patients, is critical to prevent advanced staging and margin invasion.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oral cytopathology is able to detect incipient cellular alterations, but it is not routinely applied to this purpose. We aimed to establish a model to screen individuals with no oral lesion exposed to smoking/alcohol, by means of the nuclear area, cell proliferation rate, and analysis of genetic damage. METHODS In this cross-sectional pilot study, 90 patients were allocated into 3 groups: oral cancer group (patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma), tobacco/alcohol group (patients without oral lesions and exposed to these risk factors), and control group (individuals with no lesion and not exposed to tobacco and alcohol). The cytological smears performed in these individuals were stained with Papanicolaou, a silver-staining and a Feulgen reaction. The nuclei of cells were measured, and AgNORs/nucleus and micronuclei (MN) were quantified. The cutoff values were stipulated evaluating the healthy mucosa (control group) and the cancerization field mucosa (oral cancer group). RESULTS Cutoff values for the screening of individuals exposed to carcinogens were ≥8% of nuclei larger than 100 μm2, ≥3.38 AgNOR/nucleus, and ≥3 MN per 1,000 cells. CONCLUSIONS Nuclear area measurement and AgNORs/nucleus and MN quantification identified the incipient phase of oral carcinogenesis. A screening model for individuals without oral lesion exposed to smoking/alcohol was proposed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Oral cancer is the eighth most common type of cancer worldwide and a significant contributor to the global burden caused by this disease. The principal parameters considered to influence prognosis, and thus treatment selection, are size and location of the primary tumor, as well as assessment of the presence and extent of lymph node and distant metastasis (DM). However, no known report regarding the relationship between the primary site and DM has been presented. For effective treatment selection and good prognosis, the correlation of DM with anatomic site and histopathology results of the primary malignancy is important. In the present study, we performed a systematic review of published reports in an effort to determine the relationship between the anatomic site of various types of oral cavity cancer and DM. METHODS A systematic review of articles published until the end of 2018 was performed using PubMed/MEDLINE. RESULTS A total of 150 studies were selected for this review. The percentage of all cases reported with DM was 6.3%, ranging from 0.6% to 33.1% in the individual studies. The rate of incidence of tongue occurrence was 9.3%. A frequent DM site was the lungs, with adenoid cystic carcinoma the most commonly involved histopathological factor. Malignant melanoma was most frequent (43.4%) in all histopathology findings, whereas there were no cases with an acinic cell carcinoma or cystadenocarcinoma. CONCLUSIONS We found that the occurrence of DM from the primary site as well as rate of incidence was dependent on histopathological factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of clinical-pathological and sociodemographic factors on the prevalence of distant metastasis (DM) and overall survival in patients with oral cavity and oropharynx squamous cell carcinoma (OOSCC). MATERIAL AND METHODS Cross-sectional study based on the records of 404 OOSCC patients evaluated for DM, covering the period 2000-2014. We analysed the influence of age, sex, level of schooling, primary tumor subsite, treatment, marital status, family history of cancer, history of smoking and alcohol consumption, type of health care coverage (private vs. public) and overall survival. Findings were submitted to Fisher's exact test, Pearson's chi-squared test, Mantel-Cox log-rank testing and multinomial and Cox regression analysis (SPSS v. 20.0; p<0.05). RESULTS The prevalence of DM was 5.4% (22/404). The respiratory tract was the most affected DM site (n=9; 40.9%). Male sex (p=0.049), oropharyngeal primary tumor (p=0.008), stage T3-4 (p=0.022), lymph node metastasis (N+) (p<0.001) and palliative treatment (p=0.005) were directly associated with DM. Patients with oral primary tumours (p=0.343) and primary oropharyngeal tumours (p=0.242) did not differ significantly with regard to the prevalence of DM. N+ was an independent risk factor for DM (p=0.017). Five variables independently reduced overall survival: male sex (p=0.035), age >65 years (p=0.046), indigenous/brown racial type (p=0.045), palliative treatment (p=0.035) and DM (p=0.048). CONCLUSIONS Lymph node metastasis independently increased the prevalence of DM and, along with male sex, older age, brown racial type and palliative treatment, was independently associated with poor prognosis in patients with OOSCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Indian subcontinent has the highest incidence and prevalence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Inflammation and apoptosis are two emerging hall marks of cancer that might play a significant role in tumorigenesis and metastasis. Concurrent expression of proinflammatory cytokine (IL-1β) and executioner caspase (Caspase-3) in same OSCC tissue samples has not been reported in an Indian population. OBJECTIVES The present study aimed to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of IL-1β and Caspase-3 in same OSCC tissue samples with clinicopathological correlation and survival analysis in Indian population. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted utilizing 40 formalin fixed paraffin embedded histologically diagnosed cases of OSCC comprising of 20 metastatic OSCC and 20 non-metastatic OSCC. RESULTS Increased expression of IL-1β and Caspase-3 were observed in metastatic OSCC. Correlation of expression of IL-1β and Caspase-3 with clinicopathological parameters revealed a significant association between these markers and staging, nodal status and site of the lesion. CONCLUSION Over expression of IL-1β and Caspase-3 was associated with advanced stage and poor survival of the patient. IL-1β overexpression showed significantly lower disease-free survival and disease specific survival as well. Overexpression of IL-1β and Caspase-3 in incisional OSCC biopsies could be considered for predicting metastasis and survival outcome.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the epidemiological profile and survival rate of oral and oropharyngeal cancer patients seen at a university hospital. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out by means of the pathological reports of patients with oral and oropharyngeal cancer, seen at a university hospital of the Southern Region, between January 2004 and December 2014. Information was collected on patients and tumors. The mortality rate was gathered from the patient death registry in the Mortality Information System. Data were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier survival curve and the log-rank test to compare variables. Results The 5- and 10-year survival rates were 42% and 38%, respectively. The anatomical location had a significant association with survival rate (p=0.001), with the rates were better in the lips (p=0.04), and worse in the oropharynx (p=0.03). There were no statistically significant differences between survival rates according to age, sex, ethnicity, schooling level and histologic grade. Conclusion The survival rates of oral and oropharyngeal cancer were and associated with the anatomical site of the tumor.

Abstract
Background: Osteoradionecrosis of the jaw (ORNJ) is the most severe and complex sequel of head and neck radiotherapy (RT) because of the bone involved, it may cause pain, paresthesia, foul odor, fistulae with suppuration, need for extra oral communication and pathological fracture. We treated twenty lesions of ORNJ using low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). The objective of this study was to stimulate the affected area to homeostasis and to promote the healing of the oral mucosa. Methods: We performed aPDT on the exposed bone, while LLLT was performed around the bone exposure (red spectrum) and on the affected jaw (infrared spectrum). Monitoring and clinical intervention occurred weekly or biweekly for 2 years. Results: 100% of the sample presented clinical improvement, and 80% presented complete covering of the bone exposure by intact oral mucosa. Conclusion: LLLT and aPDT showed positive results as an adjuvant therapy to treat ORNJ.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Only a few studies have evaluated the clinicopathological features of oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in Brazil, and most were conducted in the most industrialized region of the country, i.e. the southeastern region. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathological features of this malignant neoplasm in northeastern Brazil. DESIGN AND SETTING Retrospective study performed in an oral pathology laboratory in Recife, Brazil. METHODS All cases of oral SCC that occurred between 2000 and 2015 were studied. Clinical data were recorded and histological slides were reviewed. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test (P ≤ 0.05). RESULTS A total of 194 cases were evaluated. The male-to-female ratio was 1.5:1. The mean age was 65.4 years, and only 6.6% of the cases occurred in patients younger than 41 years. Most tumors consisted of well-differentiated SCC (54.6%). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study highlight the higher prevalence of oral SCC among women and the increasing number of cases among young patients. Thus there is no specific risk group for oral SCC, as in the past. This fact needs to be taken into consideration in clinical routine care, so that apparently innocuous malignant lesions do not go unnoticed in these individuals.

Abstract
Tumor protein D52-like 2 (TPD52L2) and its family members form homo- and hetero-meric complexes essential for cell proliferation in multiple human cancers. TPD52L2 is involved in cell migration and attachment in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). To confirm the role of TPD52L2 in OSCC, we employed the lentivirus-delivered small interfering RNA (siRNA) technique to knock down TPD52L2 expression in two OSCC cell lines, CAL27, and KB. Knockdown of TPD52L2 by RNA interference markedly suppressed cell proliferation and colony formation. Cell cycle analysis showed that depletion of TPD52L2 led to CAL27 cells arrest in the S phase. We found an excessive accumulation of cells in the sub-G1 phase, which can represent apoptotic cells. TPD52L2 silencing also induced the cleavage of PARP. These results suggest that TPD52L2 is involved in OSCC cell growth and serves as a potential therapeutic target in human OSCC.

Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the specific five-year oral cancer survival rate and associated factors in Brazil. This was a retrospective cohort study using the Oncological Database as the source, with probabilistic-deterministic linkage of all the records for authorization of radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy in the Unified National Health System from 2000 to 2006, generating a single record for each patient. The current study included patients diagnosed with oral cancer from 2002 to 2003 (except for cancer of lip), and ranging from 19 to 100 years of age (N = 6,180). Specific five-year survival was 60%. Decreased specific survival was associated with: age > 40 years; stages III or IV; location on the tongue, floor of the mouth, or base of the tongue; not performing surgical treatment, performing only chemotherapy or radiotherapy and chemotherapy; and residence in certain States of Brazil. The results emphasize the need to include assessment of regional disparities as a possibility for increasing health interventions and improving survival.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Epidemiological data from oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is mostly derived from North American, European and East Asian populations. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to report the demographic and clinicopathological features from OSCC diagnosed in an Oral Pathology service in southeastern Brazil in an 8-year period. MATERIAL AND METHODS All OSCC diagnosed from 2005 to 2012 were reviewed, including histological analysis of all hematoxylin and eosin stained slides and review of all demographic and clinical information from the laboratory records. RESULTS A total of 346 OSCC was retrieved and males represented 67% of the sample. Mean age of the patients was 62.3 years-old and females were affected a decade older than males (p<0.001). Mean time of complaint with the tumors was 10 months and site distribution showed that the border of the tongue (37%), alveolar mucosa/gingiva (20%) and floor of mouth/ventral tongue (19%) were the most common affected sites. Mean size of the tumors was 3.4 cm, with no differences for males and females (p=0.091) and males reported both tobacco and alcohol consumption more frequently than females. Histological grade of the tumors revealed that 27%, 40% and 21% of the tumors were, respectively, classified as well-, moderately- and poorly-differentiated OSCC, 26 cases (7.5%) were microinvasive OSCC and 17 cases were OSCC variants. OSCC in males mostly affected the border of tongue, floor of mouth/ventral tongue and alveolar mucosa/gingival, while they were more frequent on the border of tongue, alveolar mucosa/gingival and buccal mucosa/buccal sulcus in females (p=0.004). CONCLUSIONS The present data reflect the epidemiological characteristics of OSCC diagnosed in a public Oral Pathology laboratory in southeastern Brazil and have highlighted several differences in clinicopathological features when comparing male and female OSCC-affected patients.

Abstract
Objective: Recent reports suggest an increase in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) frequency. To improve programs in public health, it is necessary to understand the epidemiological conditions. The aim of this study was to analyze the trend in gender, age, anatomic zone and OSCC stage from Mexico City’s General Hospital patients from 1990 to 2008.
Study design: A retrospective review of all OSCC cases diagnosed by the Pathology Department of the Mexico City General Hospital was performed. Demographic data, in addition to anatomic zone and histological degree of differentiation were obtained. Central tendency, dispersion and prevalence rate per 100,000 individuals were determined.
Results: A total of 531 patients were diagnosed with OSCC; 58.4% were men, giving a male:female ratio of 1.4:1, and the mean age was 62.5 ± 14.9 years. The predominant anatomic zone was the tongue (44.7%), followed by the lips (21.2%) and gums (20.5%). The most frequent histological degree was moderately differentiated in 325 cases (61.2%). The rates of OSCC prevalence showed similar patterns in terms across time. A significant correlation (P = 0.007) between anatomic zone and age was observed.
Conclusion: According to our results, the prevalence of OSCC does not show important variations; however, a relationship between age and anatomic zone was observed. These data could be used as parameters for the diagnosis of OSCC as well as for the development and dissemination of preventive programs for the early detection of oral cancer.

Abstract
OBJETIVO: caracterizar a população portadora de Câncer de Boca e Orofaringe atendida no setor de Cabeça e Pescoço do Hospital Aristides Maltez em Salvador - BA, no período de junho a dezembro de 2007. MÉTODOS: estudo retrospectivo por meio da análise de prontuários dos pacientes com câncer de boca e orofaringe do Hospital Aristides Maltez no período de seis meses. Informações sobre idade, sexo, localização, estadiamento clínico, intervenção cirúrgica, radioterápica, quimioterápica, presença de sonda, traqueostomia, encaminhamento e alterações fonoaudiológicas foram analisadas estatisticamente pelos testes ANOVA, Igualdade de duas proporções e Qui-Quadrado para independência. RESULTADOS: dos pacientes com carcinoma espino-celular em boca, a relação de incidência masculino-feminino foi de 2,5:1, a idade variou de 19 a 95 anos (mediana 58). Os sítios mais acometidos foram: a língua (29,2%), seguida de soalho (21,2%). Para a orofaringe, a relação masculino-feminino foi de 1,95:1, com idade entre 34 a 93 (mediana 59). As tonsilas palatinas foram o sítio mais acometido (29,2%). Os procedimentos terapêuticos mais empregados foram ausência de tratamento, combinação entre radioterapia e quimioterapia e o uso de sonda. Em relação à distribuição por estadiamento, o estádio IV foi o mais encontrado, sendo o grupo mais encaminhado ao setor de fonoaudiologia. 89,9% dos pacientes apresentaram queixas fonoaudiológicas, prevalecendo a disfagia. CONCLUSÃO: este levantamento contribuiu para caracterizar o perfil dos pacientes atendidos no hospital e com os programas de prevenção desta doença.
