Abstract
Methionine is one of the most frequently supplemented amino acids in raising of poultry. However, an overdose of methionine can cause hyperhomocysteinemia. Folic acid, taking part in the process of homocysteine remethylation, is a factor affecting the reduction of the concentration of this amino acid. The study was carried out in 2 stages. The experiment of step I was to investigate the effect of methionine and/or folic acid administration in ovo in the early stage of embryogenesis (E4), and the experiment of the second stage - in the late stage of embryogenesis (E17) on the following biochemical parameters of chicken blood: glucose concentration in whole blood and concentration of homocysteine and uric acid in plasma of domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus). Our results confirm that methionine supplementation may increase the concentration of uric acid and homocysteine. Moreover, we demonstrated that folic acid administered during embryogenesis decreased homocysteine concentration, also in groups simultaneously supplemented with methionine, especially in the initial stage of postnatal life of the bird.

Impact of broiler breeder hens' age and egg storage on egg quality, embryonic development, and hatching traits of FUNAAB-alpha chickens. Poult Sci 2024; 103:103313. Abstract
This study aimed to determine the impact of the age of breeder hens and egg storage on egg quality, embryonic development, hatching events and chick quality in FUNAAB-alpha chickens. The study involved the use of 500 hatching eggs each collected from 32-wk and 60-wk-old of FUNAAB-alpha broiler breeder hens at the Animal Breeding and Genetic Unit of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria and subjected to 5 storage periods (0, 3, 7, 11, and 15 d). The quality traits of the eggs were recorded and incubated using the conventional protocol. Data were collected on the internal and external egg characteristics, embryonic development, hatching events, and chick quality. The data collected were laid out in 2 by 5 factorial design. The results showed that eggs from 32-wk-old breeder hens had higher albumen height and Haugh unit (HU) value than those from 60-wk-old breeders. The albumen height and HU decreased progressively with storage length in the 2 age groups. Extended storage duration linearly increased (P < 0.01) egg weight loss and decreased (P < 0.01) yolk height. The eggs from both breeder ages had increasing blastodermal diameters at oviposition up until d 11 of storage but decreased on d 15 of storage in eggs from 32 wk breeders. Eggs of 32-wk-old FUNAAB-alpha breeder hens had larger diameters at oviposition compared with 60-wk-old breeders. The chicks from 60-wk breeder had late internal pipping (469.06 h), early external pipping (474.46 h) and a shorter time lag between both pips (9.00 h) compared to chicks from 32 wk breeder. The highest fertility was recorded in eggs stored for 3 d (80.7% and 79.6%), while the lowest fertility was in eggs stored for 15 d (53.4% and 47.7%) in both 32-wk and 60-wk-old breeders, respectively. Chicks from young breeder hens stored for 3 d had better quality scores (100%) compared to 0, 7, 11, and 15-d storage duration and in 60-wk-old breeders across all storage duration. It was concluded that both egg storage duration and age of breeder affected egg quality, hatching events and hatchling quality of FUNAAB-alpha chickens and the interaction effects of both factors was recorded for some of these traits. However, extended storage beyond 7 d had a larger negative impact on egg quality and hatchability of eggs from an old breeder (60 wk) than on eggs of a young breeder (32 wk).

Abstract
In broiler breeder production, up to 2% of hatching eggs are rejected because of cracked or broken shells. Eggs with cracks give a reduced hatchability and a lower chick quality and cause economic loss. The main goal of this study was to determine the effect of sealing eggshell cracks with surgical tape on hatching parameters. A total of 3,000 eggs from a 34 weeks old Cobb 500 broiler breeder flock was used in the experiment. Six hundred intact eggs represented a positive control. Other eggs were artificially cracked by the operator either on the first day of storage (1,200 eggs) or on the fourth day of storage (1,200 eggs). In both groups, cracks on 600 eggs were sealed by the adhesive surgical tape while the other 600 eggs remained untreated and were used as a negative control. Within each experimental group, eggs were assigned randomly to 4 setter trays representing 4 replicates of 150 eggs. The egg weight loss during incubation was the highest (P < 0.01) in groups of nonsealed cracked eggs. The egg weight loss in sealed groups was higher compared to the control group (P < 0.01). Percentage of egg contamination was not different between groups. Embryonic mortality was higher in non-sealed groups in all stages of embryonic development (P < 0.01) compared to groups of sealed cracked eggs and the control group. Hatching percentage was significantly lower in non-sealed groups (P < 0.01) compared to sealed groups and positive control. No significant difference in hatching parameters was observed between sealed groups and positive control, indicating that surgical tape can be used for sealing cracks on the eggshell to support embryonic survival.

Abstract
The study aimed to assess various quality characteristics (physical, morphologic, mechanical) of hatching eggs during the early-mid incubation period. Hatching eggs (1,200) were bought from a broiler Ross 308 breeder flock. Before incubation, 20 eggs were analyzed for dimensions and morphologic composition. Eggs (1,176) were incubated for 21 d. Hatchability was analyzed. On d 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12, eggs were collected (n = 20). The eggshell surface temperature and water loss were measured. The eggshell strength and thickness and the vitelline membrane strength were analyzed. The pH of thick albumen, amniotic fluid, and yolk were determined. The viscosity and lysozyme activity were studied for the thick albumen and amniotic fluid. Water loss was proportional and significantly different between incubation days. The yolk vitelline membrane strength highly depended on incubation days, decreasing steadily within the first 2 d (R2 = 0.9643). The albumen pH decreased from d 4 till d 12 of incubation, whereas the yolk pH first increased from d 0 to d 2 before a decline on d 4. Albumen viscosity was highest on d 6. There was a strong dependence of viscosity decrease with increasing shear rate (R2 = 0.7976). On the first day of incubation, the highest lysozyme hydrolytic activity was demonstrated (33,790 U/mL) compared to the activity from the amniotic fluid (8-12 d). From d 6, lysozyme activity decreased to 70 U/mL (d 10). On d 12, amniotic fluid lysozyme activity increased by over 6,000 U/mL compared to d 10. The lysozyme hydrolytic activity was lower in the amniotic fluid (d 8-12) compared to the thick albumen (0-6 d) (P < 0.001). The embryo's protective barriers are changed, and the fractions are hydrated during incubation. It could be concluded that the lysozyme is transferred from the albumen to the amniotic fluid due to its activity.

Abstract
Provision of light during incubation has shown the potential to enhance hatching traits and affect posthatch productivity, physiology, and behavior. In this study, 2 repeated trials were conducted to investigate the effect of photoperiod and strain on the embryo temperature, hatching traits and posthatch growth performance of 2 commercial strains of broilers (Ross 308 and Cobb 500). In each trial, hatching eggs were randomly distributed into 6 incubators with 3 photoperiod treatments: blue LED light for 12 h d-1 (12L:12D) or 18 h d-1 (18L:6D) during entire incubation were compared with no illumination condition (DARK). Data were analyzed as a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement with the trial as the blocking factor. Embryos incubated under 12L:12D and 18L:6D had lower air cell temperature (P < 0.05) than the DARK embryos from d 13 of incubation onward except on the day of candling. The response of air cell temperature to periodic illumination differed between 2 strains. Cobb embryos had lower air cell temperature in 12L:12D than those incubated with 18L:6D from d 16 of incubation onward, whereas lower air cell temperature was found in Ross embryos when illuminated with 18L:6D photoperiod compared to those under 12L:12D. The 12L:12D treatment was associated with improved (P < 0.05) navel closure condition of hatchlings. There were no differences in hatchability, embryo mortality, body weight, or length at hatch among photoperiod groups or its combination with strain. No differences in production parameters were found between DARK and illuminated groups. However, 12L:12D had heavier (P < 0.05) body weight on d 14 of age and higher (P < 0.05) body weight gain than 18L:6D from d 7 to 14 of age. The results of this study indicate that providing blue LED light up to 18 h d-1 has no detrimental effect on production of broilers, however, 12L:12D light regime improved chick quality at hatch compared to DARK and resulted in heavier birds by d 14 compared to 18L:6D.

Abstract
The impact of growth curve (GC) and dietary energy-to-protein ratio of broiler breeder hens on chick quality and broiler performance was investigated. Pullets (n = 1,536) were randomly allotted to 24 pens and assigned to 1 of 8 treatments from hatch onwards, according to a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement with 2 GC (standard growth curve = SGC or elevated growth curve = EGC, +15%) and 4 diets, differing in energy-to-protein ratio (96%, 100%, 104%, and 108% AMEn diet). At 28 and 36 wk of age, 60 hatching eggs per maternal pen were selected for incubation and 768-day-old broilers were assigned to 32 pens according to maternal treatment. Broilers from EGC breeders were 1.9 g heavier at hatch (P < 0.001) and 36 g heavier at slaughter (P = 0.001) than broilers from SGC breeders due to a 1.0 g/d higher growth rate (P = 0.003) and 1.5 g/d higher feed intake (P = 0.006) from hatch to 32 d of age. An increase in breeder dietary energy-to-protein ratio resulted in a linear decrease in embryonic mortality in the first 3 d of incubation (β = -0.2% per % AMEn; P = 0.05). At hatch, broiler BW decreased with an increasing breeder dietary energy-to-protein ratio (β = -0.1 g per % AMEn; P = 0.001), whereas at slaughter broiler BW increased with an increasing breeder dietary energy-to-protein ratio (β = 3.2 g per % AMEn; P = 0.02). This was due to a linear increase in growth rate (β = 0.1 g/d per % AMEn; P = 0.004) and feed intake (β = 0.1 g/d per % AMEn; P = 0.02). Additionally, an increase in breeder dietary energy-to-protein ratio resulted in a linear decrease in body weight corrected feed conversion ratio (β = -0.002 per % AMEn; P = 0.002). Overall, it can be concluded that a higher GC of breeders and an increase in breeder dietary energy-to-protein ratio enhances offspring performance.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to examine the impact of incubation temperature profile on embryonic growth and chick quality post-hatch. Hatching eggs (n = 405) were incubated in a Jamesway PS-5000 single-stage incubator at 37.5°C and 56% RH until embryonic day 14 (ED14). At ED14, 135 eggs each were transferred into 3 identical G.Q.F. MFG. CO incubators, and each set to one of the following incubation temperatures: 36.5°C, 37.0°C, and 37.5°C. Data on eggshell temperature (EST) and embryo quality were collected from ED15 to ED20. At hatch, chick quality and leg bone qualities were assessed. Blood collected from chicks was used to assess hematological and immunological parameters. The remainder of the chicks was reared on standard broiler feed for 8 wk to measure growth performance. Data were analyzed using the SAS Proc. GLM at P ≤ 0.05. The daily EST was higher at 37.5°C incubation temperature compared to 36.5°C and 37.0°C during ED15 to ED21. Chicks of 37.5°C had early external pipping and hatching times compared to 36.5°C. There were no significant differences in external chick quality parameters. The chick leg bone Ca and P levels increased with increasing incubation temperature at day old, 4 wk, and 8 wk. Besides mean corpuscular hemoglobin and concentration, which were higher at 37.5°C compared to 36.5°C and 37.0°C, all blood parameters measured were not different. Bone mineral levels may not be the same as bone development. Therefore, appropriate incubation and nutritional strategies are needed to increase bone development, and broiler growth to reduce leg problems.

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate effects of source of macro and trace minerals (inorganic vs. organic) in fast and slower growing broiler breeders' diets on egg and hatchling mineral content and on offspring tibia morphological, biophysical, and mechanical characteristics. After 10 wk feeding the breeders (at 30 wk of age), eggs were collected and incubated. Eggs and hatchlings were analysed on mineral content. Male chickens were assigned to 32 pens with 12 chickens per pen. At approximately 1,700 and 2,600 gram BW, three chickens per pen were slaughtered. Tibia characteristics were determined. Organic minerals in the broiler breeder diet resulted in higher Fe and Se concentration in the egg and in higher Se concentration in the hatchling. Despite effects of mineral source on mineral concentration in the eggs and hatchlings were limited, organic minerals in the slower-growing broiler breeder diet resulted in higher offspring BW (d 42, Δ = 115 g; P = 0.03) and advanced tibia development (higher thickness (∆ = 0.38 cm; P < 0.001), osseous volume (∆ = 5.1 cm3; P = 0.01), and mineral density (Δ = 0.13 g/cm3; P = 0.03) at 2,600 g BW), but this was not observed in fast-growing chickens. This suggests that 1) the difference in feed intake of the breeders between strains might affect offspring performance, which might indicate that current slower-growing breeder diets might be suboptimal in minerals or that transgenerational mineral availability in slower growing chickens appears to be more effective on bone development, which might be related to time available for bone development. 2) transgenerational mineral availability in offspring appears to play a role via other mechanisms than via absolute mineral concentrations.

Abstract
Simple Summary Curcumin has been used as a suitable feed supplement for poultry to improve several hematological and biochemical indicators, diminish heat stress, and increase antioxidant activity. This experiment evaluated the effects of incubation temperatures and spraying hatching eggs with curcumin during the incubation phase on chick embryo development, hatchability, physiological body reactions, and hormonal profiles of Dokki 4 chickens. The findings indicated that the relative water loss and dead after piping in the chronic incubation temperature group were significantly increased compared with the normal incubation temperature group. Post-hatch, the triiodothyronine level in the high incubation temperature group was significantly decreased than in the control group. Regarding curcumin treatments, relative water loss from eggs and the hatchability of fertile eggs in treated groups significantly increased, while body surface temperature significantly decreased compared with the control. Abstract This study evaluated the impact of incubation temperature and spraying hatching eggs with curcumin during the early embryogenesis phase on chick embryo developments, hatchability, physiological body reactions, and hormonal profiles of Dokki 4 chickens. A total of 720 fertile eggs were equally distributed into two groups. In the first group, the eggs were incubated at normal incubation temperature/NIT (37.8 °C and 55–60% RH) for up to 19 days of incubation, whereas those in the second group were incubated in the same conditions except from 6 to 8 day, in which they were daily exposed to chronic incubation temperature/CIT (39.0 °C) for 3 h. Each group was classified into four curcumin treatment doses; the 1st treatment (control) was sprayed with distilled water, while the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th treatments were sprayed with 250, 500, and 1000 mg curcumin/liter distilled water. The results indicated that the lowest hatchability of fertile eggs (%) was obtained in the CIT group (p = 0.02), whereas the highest body surface temperature/BST compared in the NIT group (p = 0.01). Regarding curcumin treatments, the percentages of heart, gizzard, spleen, and T3 hormone levels in the treated group were significantly increased, while the H/L ratio was significantly reduced (p = 0.001) compared with the control. At 8 weeks of age, the testes and ovary percentages in treated groups were significantly (p = 0.05) increased compared with the control. In conclusion, exposure of hatching eggs to high thermal stress (39 °C) during the incubation phase had deleterious effects on chick performance and T3 hormone level. Moreover, spraying hatching eggs had beneficial impacts on growth, reproductive organs, T3 hormone level, and reducing H/L ratio.

Abstract
Simple Summary It is common practice that one-day-old chicks can be deprived of feed for about 48 h or more before they are housed on farms. Thus, we hypothesized that early nutrition on-farm hatched chicks might overcome the adverse effects of delayed nutrition on-hatchery hatched chicks regarding some animal welfare issues such as foot pad health as well as growth performance of birds. Our results confirmed that early nutrition on-farm hatched chicks together with using new fresh litter at d 7 of life led to a reduction in the severity of foot pad lesions and improved the growth performance of broiler chickens. Abstract This study aimed to investigate the possibility of rearing newly hatched chicks with immediate access to feed and water in the same hatching unit one week prior to transferring them to the conventional broiler house with special regards to foot pad health and growth performance. Two trials were performed with a total of 6900/6850 (trials 1/2) broiler chickens (ROSS 308). A total of 3318/3391 chicks (trials 1/2) were transported from the hatchery (duration of about 3 h) and reared in a conventional broiler house (control group: delayed nutrition on-hatchery hatched). The control group did not receive any form of nutrition until they were taken to conventional broiler housing. Additionally, a total of 3582/3459 (trials 1/2) embryonated eggs (d 18) were obtained from the same parent flock of the same commercial hatchery and taken to the farm facility. After on-farm hatch, the chicks had immediate access to water and feed (experimental group: early nutrition on-farm hatched). After d 6/7 of life, the on-farm hatched chicks (trials 1/2) were transferred to the broiler house on the same facility. The delayed nutrition on-hatchery hatched groups displayed a significantly lower dry matter content in the litter compared to the early nutrition on-farm hatched groups (two-factorial analysis) at d 6/7 and d 14 of life. However, thereafter, no significant differences were noted. Based upon two-factorial analysis, the early nutrition on-farm hatched groups revealed lower foot pad lesions from d 14 of life onwards and showed a higher body weight (BW) throughout the rearing period compared to the delayed nutrition on-hatchery hatched groups (p < 0.05). Overall, early nutrition on-farm hatched chickens is of critical importance together with using new litter at d 7 to maintain healthy foot pads as well as to enhance nutrient utilization and optimize the growth performance.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of chick pipping location on live broiler performance. A total of 1,350 hatching eggs were collected from a commercial flock of Ross 308 at 38 wk of age. Eggs were incubated with either their large end up (LEU) or small end up (SEU). After transfer on d 19, the air cell area of each fertile egg was marked with a marker pen on the egg surface with a candling light and monitored every 6 h during the hatching period to accurately determine the location of the pip hole. Chicks were classified into 3 groups: 1) egg position LEU and pipped through the air cell (LAC); 2) egg position SEU and pipped through the air cell (SAC); and 3) egg position SEU and pipped through the small end of the egg, not through the air cell (SSE). Individual BW was recorded at placement and at 7, 21, and 35 d of age. Feed consumption was also determined at 7, 21, and 35 d of age. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) was calculated on a pen basis for the same time periods. Mortality was recorded twice a day, and percent mortality was calculated throughout the study. The European production efficiency index (EPEI) was also calculated. All chicks that hatched from LEU eggs emerged from the egg at the region of the air cell; however, only 10.3% of chicks from the SEU position hatched through air cells. Pipping location greatly affected the hatch time. Chicks pipped through the air cell location hatched earlier than the chicks pipped without using air cell (P < 0.001). The initial BW at placement was higher in the LAC and SAC groups than in the SSE group (P < 0.001). This BW difference was still evident in the subsequent growing period, and the chicks that pipped the SSE exhibited a lower (P = 0.059) BW at 35 d. Additionally, the SSE group had a poorer FCR and numerically higher mortality than the other two groups at 35 d. Overall, the EPEI values in the LAC and SAC groups were higher than that in the SSE group at 35 d (P < 0.001). We concluded that broiler performance was negatively affected when the chicks pipped and hatched without using air cells.

Abstract
Background and Aim: Thermal stress (hot or cold) is one of many environmental stressors that severely affects the health of broiler chickens. One negative effect of thermal stress is the disruption of the intestinal barrier function in broiler chickens. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of thermal manipulation (TM) on the small intestine in terms of histomorphometry as well as junctional, heat-shock, and immune response gene expression during post-hatch exposure to thermal stress. Materials and Methods: The experiment was conducted by dividing 928 fertile Ross eggs into three incubation groups: The control (C) group (incubated at 37.8°C and 56% relative humidity [RH] for the whole incubation period), the TM using low temperature TML group (incubated at 36°C and 56% RH for 18 h/day from embryonic days 7 to 16), and the TM using high temperature (TMH) group (incubated at 39°C and 65% RH for 18 h/day from embryonic days 7 to 16). On post-hatch day 21, 90 chicks were randomly selected from each incubation group and were equally subdivided into three subgroups for the post-hatch thermal stress experiment: The TN subgroup (room temperature maintained at 24°C), the heat stress (HS) subgroup (room temperature maintained at 35°C), and the cold stress (CS) subgroup (room temperature maintained at 16°C). After 1 day of thermal stress exposure (age 22 days), five birds from each subgroup were euthanized and ileum samples were collected to evaluate the transcription of the Claudin (CLDN1), CLDN-5, Occludin, Cadherin-1, heat shock factors (HSF1), HSF3, 70 kilodalton heat shock protein, 90 kilodalton heat shock protein, Interleukin6 (IL6), IL8, toll-like receptors-2 (TLR2), and TLR4 genes by Real-Time Quantitative Reverse Transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis. Finally, after 4 and 7 days of thermal stress (age 25 and 28 days, respectively), nine chicks were euthanized, and their jejunum and ileum were collected for histomorphometric analysis. Results: After exposure to 1 day of thermal stress, the C subgroups exposed to thermal stress (HS and CS) possessed significantly increased expression of junctional, heat-shock, and immune response genes compared to the C-TN subgroup, and similar results were observed for the TMH. In contrast, thermally stressed TMH subgroups had significantly lower expression of the studied genes compared to C subgroups exposed to thermal stress. Furthermore, no significant changes were detected between the TML subgroups exposed to thermal stress and TML-TN. Moreover, significant alterations in villus height (VH), villus surface area, crypt depth (CD), and VH to CD ratio were observed between the TML, TMH, and C subgroups exposed to CS. Conclusion: It might be suggested that TM may have a protective impact on the small intestine histomorphometry and epithelial integrity of broilers during post-hatch exposure to thermal stress.

Abstract
In all vertebrates, hypoxia plays an important role in fetal development, driving vasculogenesis, angiogenesis, hematopoiesis, and chondrogenesis. Therefore, the ability to sense and respond to changes in the availability of oxygen (O2) is crucial for normal embryonic development as well as for developmental plasticity. Moderate levels of hypoxia trigger a regulated process which leads to adaptive responses. Regulation of angiogenesis by hypoxia is an important component of homeostatic control mechanisms that link the cardio-pulmonary-vascular O2 supply to metabolic demands in local tissues. Hypoxia leads to the activation of genes that are important for cell and tissue adaptation to low O2 conditions, such as hypoxia-inducible factor 1. Previous studies have shown a dose-response effect to hypoxia in chicken embryos, with lower and/or prolonged O2 levels affecting multiple mechanisms and providing a spectrum of responses that facilitate the ability to maintain O2 demand despite environmental hypoxia. In chicken embryos, mild to extreme hypoxia during embryogenesis improves chorioallantoic membrane and cardiovascular development, resulting in an increase in O2 carrying capacity and leading to developmental plasticity that may affect post-hatch chick performance and improve adaptation to additional environmental stresses at suboptimal environmental conditions.

Abstract
Birds use contact incubation to warm their eggs above ambient temperature required for embryonic development. In contrast, birds in the industry as well as many birds in breeding programs and scientific studies are incubated in conventional incubators that warm eggs via circulating warm air. This means that contact incubated eggs have different thermal properties than eggs incubated in a conventional incubator. In light of previous studies showing that small differences in incubation temperature can affect chicks post-hatching phenotype, we investigated the consequences of incubating Red jungle fowl eggs at the same temperature (37 °C) either via contact incubation or warm air incubation. We found that contact incubated chicks had a more robust body composition, were more explorative and had a higher temperature preference early in life, as well as a sex dependent difference in plasma Corticosterone levels pre-hatch (measured in down-feathers) and post-hatch (measured in plasma) compared to chicks incubated in a conventional warm air incubator. While previous studies have demonstrated that embryonic development and post-hatch phenotype is sensitive to small variations in temperature, our study demonstrates for the first time that the way heat is distributed to the egg has a similar magnitude of effect on post-hatch phenotype and highlights the sensitivity of the incubation period in shaping birds post-hatch phenotype.

Abstract
The effects of the storage period and prewarming temperature on embryonic mortality, hatchability, and synchronous hatching of broiler eggs were investigated. Eggs were obtained from commercial flocks of Ross 308 broiler breeders at 27 and 28 wk of age for trials 1 and 2, respectively. In both trials, 2,400 eggs were stored for 4 d (short) or 11 d (long) at 18°C (64.4°F) and 75% RH and were randomly assigned to 2 groups at either a prewarming temperature of 26.1°C (79°F, low) or 29.4°C (85°F, high) for 8 h before setting. The eggs were transferred from setters to hatching baskets at 444 h (18.5 d) of incubation. The hatched chicks were counted at 6-h intervals between 468 h and 516 h of incubation and categorized as early, middle, or late hatching. The eggs stored for 4 d hatched earlier than the eggs stored for 11 d (P < 0.05). An increased prewarming temperature (29.4°C) resulted in a 1.0-h shorter incubation duration, but this difference was not significant (P = 0.064). An interaction between the storage period and prewarming temperature was observed for middle- and late-hatched chicks (P < 0.05). No interactions between the storage period and prewarming temperature were observed for hatchability of fertile eggs or embryonic mortality; however, a significant interaction was found between the storage period and prewarming temperature on the second-quality chick percentage (P < 0.05). The eggs stored for 11 d had a significantly reduced hatchability of fertile eggs owing to increased embryonic mortality than short-stored eggs (P < 0.05). The interaction effect indicated that eggs held for 8 h with prewarming at 29.4°C after 11 d of storage had more middle- and fewer late-hatched chicks and improved chick quality than those that received the 26.1°C prewarming treatment (P < 0.05), but no significant difference was found among the prewarming treatments for eggs stored for 4 d. This study demonstrated that prolonged egg storage resulted in reduced hatchability, increased incubation duration, and an asynchronous hatching time. Moreover, increasing the prewarming temperature could be used to promote uniformity among embryos through synchronous hatching, thus improving broiler flock uniformity and performance of the prolonged stored eggs.

Abstract
The current study aimed to evaluate the effects of embryonic thermal manipulation (TM) on hatching criteria, chick quality, and subsequent growth performance of broiler chickens under heat stress (HS) condition. Two thousand fertile eggs were randomly divided between 2 groups and incubated under standard (37.8 °C and 56% relative humidity (RH)) and TM (39.5 °C and 65% RH) conditions. Temperature and humidity were identical in both groups within the first 10 days. The eggs in the TM group were exposed to 39.5 °C and 65% RH for 3 h/day from 11 to 16 days of incubation. Egg weight (EW) was measured in 1, 11, and 18 days of incubation, and eggshell temperature (EST) was recorded daily. Chick quality was, also, evaluated according to the Tona method on hatch day. Samples of the chicks (n = 20) were euthanized and dissected at 0-day post-hatch, and different carcass parts were weighed, and blood samples were collected for hormones analysis. The post-hatch growth performance of both groups was also recorded under HS (37 °C for 5 h beginning at 22 days) condition. The results showed that TM did not significantly affect hatchability and embryonic mortality (P > 0.05). The female chick percentage was higher in the TM group (P < 0.05). Eggshell temperature and serum concentrations of corticosterone and T4 were significantly higher in the TM compared with the control chicks (P < 0.05). The chick length was considerably shorter in TM chicks (P < 0.05). Chick quality was not influenced by TM. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the post-hatch growth performance (P > 0.05). In conclusion, exposing broiler embryos to the controlled TM did not have adverse effects on chick quality and post-hatch growth performance.

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the effects of green light emitting diode (LED) light during incubation and dietary organic macro and trace minerals during rearing on tibia morphological, biophysical, and mechanical characteristics of broiler chickens at slaughter age. The experiment was setup as a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, with the following treatments: 1) light during incubation (green LED light or darkness), 2) macro mineral source during rearing (organic or inorganic Ca and P), and 3) trace mineral source during rearing (organic or inorganic Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, and Se). A total of 2,400 eggs (Ross 308) were either incubated under green LED light (16L:8D) or in complete darkness. After hatch, a total of 864 male broiler chickens were reared until slaughter age (day 42) and provided with 1 of 4 diets, differing in macro and/or trace mineral source. During rearing, the experiment had a complete randomized block design with 9 replicate pens per treatment and 12 chickens per pen. At slaughter age (day 42), 2 chickens per replicate were randomly selected and tibia bones were obtained. Tibia weight, length, thickness, osseous volume, pore volume, total volume, mineral content, mineral density, ultimate strength, and stiffness were determined. Green LED light during incubation did not affect any of the tibia characteristics. Dietary organic macro minerals positively affected most of the tibia morphological, biophysical, and mechanical characteristics compared to the inorganic macro minerals, whereas trace mineral sources did not affect tibia characteristics. It can be concluded that dietary organic macro minerals Ca and P stimulated tibia characteristics, whereas green LED light during incubation and dietary trace minerals during rearing did not affect tibia characteristics, locomotion, or leg disorders.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of embryonic and post-hatch photo-stimulation with variable light sources with respect to hatchability parameters, hormonal profile and growth performance of commercial broiler chicken. Uniform sized Cobb broiler eggs (174) were procured from commercial hatchery and incubated in three different groups with arrangement of variable colour light source [Control group; Red light photo-stimulated (675 nm); Green light photo-stimulated group (575 nm) of light]. After hatching, as per earlier grouping, chicks hatched out from respective groups reared under continuous lighting in normal, red, green light up to six week of age in standard management condition in battery cages. The result of the present study indicated that photo-stimulation of incubated eggs with different lights sources had no significant effect on hatchability percentage and hatching time. Green light photo-stimulated group showed significantly higher body weight gain with better feed conversion ratio than red and control groups from 0 to 6 wk of age. Feed intake did not differ significantly within the groups. Green light photo-stimulation promotes growth performance traits via stimulating circulating level of gonadal axis and somatotrophic axis hormone. The results of the study provide evidence that green light photo-stimulation used in this study is beneficial in terms of improved growth performance without affecting hatchability in broiler chicken.

Abstract
Simple Summary Egg storage duration and breeder age are two important factors influencing productivity and profitability of hatcheries. These factors probably interact with each other to influence egg quality, apparent fertility, hatchability, and hatchling quality. The aim of this study was to investigate interactions between egg storage duration and broiler breeder age on these parameters. It was demonstrated that eggs from young breeders were the most resistant to storage duration increase in relationship to early and middle embryonic mortality than eggs from older breeders. However, the opposite was found for hatchling quality, where yolk free body mass, which increased from young to old breeders after five days of storage, increased only from middle to old breeders after prolonged storage (19 days). The intestine percentage decreased also after long storage in younger breeders, but in older breeders no significant effect of egg storage duration was found. Abstract Egg storage duration and breeder age are probably interacting to influence egg quality, hatchability, and hatchling quality. To evaluate this interaction, the impact of breeder age (31, 42, 66 weeks) and storage duration (2, 5, 12, 19 days) was investigated on broiler breeder eggs (Arbor Acres). Thick albumen diameter and pH increased, and yolk dry matter decreased between 2 and 19 days of storage. With the increase of breeder age from 31 to 66 weeks, albumen height, percentage and dry matter and shell percentage decreased and the egg weight and yolk percentage, dry matter and diameter increased. Prolonged egg storage increased the yolk pH in all breeder ages, but earlier and steeper in the oldest breeders. Prolonged egg storage resulted in a lower hatchability of set and fertile eggs due to a higher percentage of embryonic mortality. Early mortality increased earlier and steeper with prolonged egg storage in the oldest compared to younger breeders. Between 5 and 19 days of storage, yolk free body mass, liver and proventriculus + gizzard percentages decreased, as well as hatchling length and yolk efficiency (yolk absorption per initial yolk weight). The latter effects were most pronounced in the younger than in the older breeders. Therefore, eggs are preferably stored shorter than 7 d, but if long storage (≥12 days) cannot be avoided, we recommend to store eggs of older breeders when egg quality and hatchability are most important. In case hatchling quality is most important, it would be better to store eggs of younger breeders (31 weeks) for a prolonged period.

Abstract
Hatchery efficiency is based on hatchability and the number of salable chicks. The hatchery sector has been seeking new alternatives to optimize production rates, including the use of different systems (multistage [MS] or single-stage [SS] machines) to improve incubation conditions. The present study aimed to compare results for hatchability, chick quality, and broiler performance of chicks from 2 incubator systems—MS and SS. The experimental design for hatchability, hatch window, egg weight loss, and chick performance variables was completely randomized with 2 treatments (MS and SS). Performance variables were analyzed as a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement (incubator type x chick sex). Egg weight loss between incubation and transfer was higher for eggs incubated in MS (P < 0.05). Hatchability was higher for eggs incubated in SS (P < 0.05), and chicks in SS had a longer hatch window (P < 0.05). Embryo diagnosis revealed higher final mortality for embryos incubated in MS (P < 0.05), as well as higher percentages of alive and dead pipped and cracked eggs (P < 0.05). Physical quality was better for chicks from SS (P < 0.05). There was no interaction between the studied factors for performance results (P > 0.05). Incubator type did not affect broiler performance for any of the studied ages (P > 0.05), whereas male broilers had better performance than females (P < 0.05). The SS incubation system proved better than the MS system at meeting embryo requirements during embryo development, with better hatching rates and chick quality, although performance variables were not influenced by incubation type.

Abstract
White striping, wooden breast, and spaghetti muscle have become common myopathies in broilers worldwide. Several research reports have indicated that the origin of these lesions is metabolic disorders. These failures in normal metabolism can start very early in life, and suboptimal incubation conditions may trigger some of the key alterations on muscle metabolism. Incubation conditions affect the development of muscle and can be associated with the onset of myopathies. A series of experiments conducted with broilers, turkeys, and ducks are discussed to overview primary information showing the main changes in breast muscle histomorphology, metabolism, and physiology caused by suboptimal incubation conditions. These modifications may be associated with current myopathies. Those effects of incubation on myopathy occurrence and severity have also been confirmed at slaughter age. The impact of egg storage, temperature profiles, oxygen concentrations, and time of hatch have been evaluated. The effects have been observed in diverse species, genetic lines, and both genders. Histological and muscle evaluations have detected that myopathies could be induced by extended hypoxia and high temperatures, and those effects depend on the genetic line. Thus, these modifications in muscle metabolic responses may make hatchlings more susceptible to develop myopathies during grow out due to thermal stress, high-density diets, and fast growth rates.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of sanitizing fertile eggs with clove essential oil as an alternative to paraformaldehyde; effects on the reduction in eggshell microbial count, incubation yield, and neonatal chick quality were measured. A total of 1,460 brown fertile eggs with a mean weight of 58.64 ± 0.49 g (from 37-wk-old CPK [Pesadão Vermelho] breeder hens) were collected under aseptic conditions and randomly distributed into 4 treatments (nonsanitized and sanitized with grain alcohol, clove essential oil, and paraformaldehyde) before incubation. The count of total aerobic mesophilic bacteria was significantly lower after spraying with clove essential oil (2.30 ± 0.24 log10 CFU/mL) than on nonsanitized eggs (3.49 ± 0.34 log10 CFU/mL) or on eggs sprayed with grain alcohol (3.09 ± 0.14 log10 CFU/mL) but did not differ significantly from the count in the paraformaldehyde group (2.23 ± 0.29 log10 CFU/mL). The hatchability of fertile eggs differed significantly between the studied treatments. The mean values for the eggs treated with clove essential oil (84.69 ± 1.65%) and paraformaldehyde (81.87 ± 3.92%) were statistically similar but were higher than the negative control (74.03 ± 3.58%) and grain alcohol (73.59 ± 2.87%) values. In the Pasgar© score assessment, it was determined that the clove essential oil (9.21 ± 0.89%) had a superior effect on the physical quality of the chicks compared with the effects of the other treatments. Clove essential oil is effective and safe for eggs intended for incubation. Its use as an alternative to paraformaldehyde in the sanitation of fertile eggs is strongly recommended.

Abstract
In this study, the aim was to investigate effects of chronic heat stress (CHS) on the mRNA levels of proinflammatory cytokines (interleukin [IL]-6, IL-8, IL-1β, and tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNF-α]), toll-like receptors (TLR2 and TLR4), heat shock proteins (Hsp70, heat shock transcription factor [HSF]-1, and HSF3) and antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione peroxidase, NADPH oxidase, and superoxide-dismutase) in the jejunal mucosae of broiler chickens subjected to thermal manipulation (TM) during embryogenesis. TM was carried out at 39°C and 65% relative humidity (RH) for 18 h daily from embryonic days 10 to 18. Control group was incubated at 37.8°C and 56% RH. CHS was induced by raising the temperature to 35°C for 7 D throughout posthatch days 28 to 35. On post-hatch-day 28 (day zero of CHS) and after 1, 3, 5, and 7 D of CHS, the jejunal mucosae were collected from both groups to evaluate the mRNA levels by real-time reverse transcription-PCR analysis. On day zero of CHS, the mRNA levels of antioxidant enzymes, TLRs, HSF3, IL-1β, and TNF-α were not significantly different between TM and control groups, while the levels of IL-6, IL-8, and HSF1 were lower and the level of Hsp70 was higher in TM. However, during CHS, the mRNA levels of antioxidant enzymes, IL-1β, TNF-α, TLR4, and HSF1 were significantly lower in TM than in controls, while the levels of TLR2 and IL-8 were significantly higher in TM than in controls. In addition, TM led to significant increase of mRNA levels of IL-6 and HSF3 after 1 D and Hsp70 after 3 D of CHS and to significant decrease of mRNA levels of IL-6 after 3 and 5 D, HSF3 after 7 D, and Hsp70 after 5 D of CHS. Results of this study suggest that TM led to altered posthatch antioxidant, immunological, and Hsp response to CHS in the jejunal mucosae of broiler chickens, probably indicating that TM may mitigate the adverse effects of CHS.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate an ethanolic extract of propolis and clove essential oil as a substitute for paraformaldehyde for the sanitation of fertile eggs. In total, 1,800 hatching eggs (from 40-week-old CPK [Pesadão Vermelho] breeder hens) were randomly distributed among the treatments (grain alcohol, clove essential oil, ethanolic extract of propolis, and paraformaldehyde). Spraying was the application method for all treatments except for paraformaldehyde, for which fumigation was used. The experimental design was a randomized block design with 4 treatments. Analysis of the incubation parameters was based on 6 replications per treatment. The egg weight loss was lower in the eggs treated with ethanolic extract of propolis (8.59 ± 3.34%) than in the eggs treated with grain alcohol (13.40 ± 2.87%), clove essential oil (12.96 ± 3.33%), and paraformaldehyde (13.05 ± 3.24%). The hatchability of the fertile eggs (51.39 ± 5.81%) and the hatchability of the set eggs (44.74 ± 6.79%) were negatively affected by the application of ethanolic extract of propolis. Late mortality of eggs treated was higher than early mortality in the grain alcohol (12.14 ± 4.72%; 2.86 ± 3.30%), clove essential oil (4.60 ± 5.95%; 3.03 ± 3.50%), and ethanolic extract of propolis (36.63 ± 6.60%, 11.98 ± 4.30%) treatments. The eggs treated with clove essential oil (67.90 ± 1.87%), paraformaldehyde (67.80 ± 1.85%), or grain alcohol (67.50 ± 1.92%) presented chick yields as expected. However, due to the high yield of eggs treated with ethanolic extract of propolis (69.25 ± 1.68%), its application at the concentration used in the present research is not recommended. Clove essential oil, when sprayed on fertile eggs as a sanitizing agent, did not differ from paraformaldehyde in relation to hatchery performance parameters.

Simple Summary Heat stress affects animal husbandry by impeding the health and production of livestock and leads to commercial losses during the hot summer season. The broiler chicken is one variety of poultry that is bred and reared for commercial meat production, but exposing this breed to high environmental temperatures causes immunosuppression. To improve heat stress tolerance in broilers, thermal manipulation (TM), a process which involves timed changes in incubation temperature during embryonic development, has been suggested as a way to enhance thermotolerance acquisition and immune response. Cytokines are small extracellular signaling peptides with critical roles in immunity by enabling cell communication during immunological development and an immune response. The objective of the current study was to investigate the effects of TM during broiler chicken embryonic development on splenic mRNA levels of the Interferon-α (IFN-α), Interferon- β (IFN-β), Interferon- γ (IFN-γ), Interleukin-4 (IL-4), Interleukin-8 (IL-8), Interleukin-15 (IL-15), Interleukin-16 (IL-16), Interleukin-17 (IL-17), and Interleukin-18 (IL-18) genes during acute heat stress (AHS). Our findings suggest that TM has a long-term effect on cytokine expression dynamics during AHS. Consequently, TM may improve heat tolerance acquisition by increasing the expression of signaling proteins important to tissue stability as well as to repair mechanisms that are employed during and/or after heat stress recovery. Abstract Heat stress significantly impacts the immunity and cytokine expression of chickens. However, the effects of embryonic thermal manipulation (TM) on cytokine expression in broiler chickens (broilers) is unclear. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effects of TM on the splenic mRNA expression dynamics of certain cytokines—namely, IFN-α, IFN-β, IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-8, IL-15, IL-16, IL-17, and IL-18—in broilers during subsequent exposure to acute heat stress (AHS). TM was performed by elevating the incubation temperature to 39 °C at 65% relative humidity (RH) for 18 h daily during embryonic days (ED) 10–18. On post-hatch day 28, AHS was carried out for 7 h at 40 °C. At 0 h and after 1, 3, 5, and 7 h of AHS, splenic tissues were collected from all study groups to evaluate mRNA expression by relative-quantitative real-time (RT)-PCR. Plasma was collected to measure IL-4, IL-8, and IFN-γ levels. At 0 h, TM significantly reduced the basal mRNA level of IFN-β and the plasma level of IFN-γ and IL-8. Moreover, AHS significantly decreased IFN-β in control chicks, decreased IL-4 in both TM and control chicks, and increased IFN-γ and IL-16 in TM chicks. IFN-α, IL-8, IL-15, IL-17, and IL-18 expression all significantly increased during AHS in both TM and control chicks, but expression dynamics were improved in TM chicks for all cytokines (except IL-17). AHS resulted in increased plasma IFN-γ levels in TM chicks only, and increased IL-8 levels at 3 and 5 h of AHS in TM chicks, but at 7 h in control chicks. Lastly, 3 h of AHS increased IL-4 plasma levels in control chicks. The results of this study may indicate that TM has a long-term effect on cytokine expression dynamics of broilers, especially during AHS. Therefore, TM may improve heat tolerance acquisition by increasing the expression of signaling proteins important to tissue stability and to repair mechanisms that are employed during and/or after heat stress recovery.

Abstract
In response to heat stress, interleukin-6 (IL-6) expression is upregulated in broiler chickens. The main aim of the present study was to evaluate the cumulative effects of thermal manipulation (TM) and subsequent acute heat stress (AHS) on the mRNA expression of IL-6 and genes involved in its induction pathways. The studied genes include IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, TLR2, TLR4, NFκB50, NFκB65, Hsp70, and HSF3 in the spleen and liver tissues. TM was carried out at 39°C for 18 h and 65% relative humidity during days 10 to 18 of embryonic development, while AHS was stimulated by raising the temperature to 40°C for 7 h on post-hatch day 28. During AHS at 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 h, the spleen and liver were collected from all groups to measure the mRNA expression by relative-quantitation real-time RT-PCR, and the blood was collected to measure plasma IL-6 level. TM significantly reduced Tc during AHS for both breeds from 1 to 7 h time intervals. TM resulted in enhanced basal mRNA expression of IL-6, HSF3, and Hsp70, but decreased the basal mRNA level of TLR4. During heat stress, TM enhanced the expression dynamics of Hsp70, HSF3, IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, TLR2, TLR4, NFκB50, and NFκB65. The results of the current study indicate that TM enhanced the heat tolerance through improving the protective immunological response to heat stress by enhancing the expression of IL-6 and modulating the expression of genes important in its induction pathways.

Abstract
Resumo O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar incubadoras de estágio múltiplo e único e diferentes níveis de CO2 sobre o desempenho, número e diâmetro das fibras musculares, morfometria cardíaca e rendimento de carcaça de frangos de corte. Foram incubados 2.520 ovos férteis em um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, distribuídos em quatro níveis de CO2 (4.000, 6.000, 8.000 e 10.000ppm) em incubadoras de estágio único durante os primeiros dez dias de incubação e um tratamento controle utilizando uma incubadora de estágio múltiplo, totalizando cinco tratamentos com 504 ovos em cada um. Após a eclosão, 1.050 pintos machos foram alojados de acordo com o delineamento utilizado no incubatório. A hipercapnia aplicada nos primeiros 10 dias de incubação afetou o ganho de peso e a conversão alimentar dos pintos na primeira semana de vida, no entanto, esses efeitos não foram mantidos até o final do período de criação. Não houve efeito de incubadoras ou da hipercapnia sobre a morfometria muscular e cardíaca. Houve maior rendimento de coxas das aves na idade de abate oriundas de incubadoras em estágio único com até 6.000 ppm de CO2, quando comparadas à incubação em máquinas de estágio múltiplo. Esse efeito pode ser atribuído à maior vascularização induzida pela hipercapnia precoce.

Abstract
Broiler strain, maternal age, and incubation temperature influence embryo metabolism. Hatching eggs were obtained from young (Y; 28 to 34 wk, $\bar{\rm x}$ = 31.2 wk), mid (M; 36 to 45 wk, $\bar{\rm x}$ = 40.5 wk) and old (O; 49 to 54 wk, $\bar{\rm x}$ = 51.4 wk) Ross 708 (n = 88; Experiment 1) and Ross 308 [(n = 45; Experiment 2: (Y; 25 to 34 wk, $\bar{\rm x}$ = 30.5 wk), (M; 35 to 44 wk, $\bar{\rm x}$ = 40.2 wk), and (O; 49 to 54 wk, $\bar{\rm x}$ = 51.6 wk)] breeders. Eggs were stored for 2 to 4 d (18°C, 73% RH), and incubated for 14 d at 37.5°C and 56% RH. At 15 d (E15), 8 fertile eggs per flock age were incubated in individual metabolic chambers at 36.0, 36.5, 37.0, or 37.5°C until E21.5. Each temperature was repeated one additional time. O2 consumption and CO2 production were used to calculate embryonic heat production (EHP). Embryo temperature was measured as eggshell temperature (EST). Initial egg weight was used as a covariate; significance was assessed at P < 0.05. In Ross 708, daily EHP tended to be higher in M and O than Y treatments at E16; EHP of M was higher than Y and O eggs at E18; M and O were higher than O eggs at E19. Incubation at 37.0°C resulted in the highest EHP from E15 to E21, except at E17. Embryos at 37.5°C had reduced EHP beyond E17. Daily EST from E15 to E21 was higher at 37.5 and 37.0°C than at 36.0 and 36.5°C. In Ross 308, daily EST was highest at 37.5°C except at E20. Incubation temperature and EST were highly correlated (R2 = 0.90 to 0.89; P < 0.001). Ross 708 chicks were longer and hatched earlier at 37.0°C than at 36.0 and 37.5°C. EST and EHP increased with incubation temperature in Ross 708. In Ross 308, maternal flock age and incubation temperature did not impact EHP. However, EST was highest at 37.5°C except at E20. Ross 708 was more sensitive to incubation temperature than Ross 308.

Abstract
From ~35 days of age fast growing meat chickens spend extended periods sitting or lying and less time standing. In a fast-feathering parent line lower early incubation temperatures which delayed chick hatch time, improved bone ash and extended their standing time. This incubation study assessed the consequences of incubation temperatures, hatch time and chick management at hatch/take off on femoral bone ash (BA) in Cobb 500 meat chickens. Embryos were incubated under either Control (between 37.8°C and 38.2°C egg shell temperature (EST)) or a Slow start (from 37.2°C at sett (the start of incubation), reaching 37.8°C EST at day 13 incubation), temperatures. Hatched chicks were identified at 492 h (20.5 days of incubation - classified as early (E)) or, between >492 and ⩽516 h (>20.5 and ⩽21.5 days of incubation - classified as late (L)), from setting. The E hatch chicks were allocated across three post-hatch treatments; treatment 1: E hatch chicks that were sampled E at 492 h from setting; treatment 2: E hatch chicks that were fed for a further 24 h in a floorpen before being sampled L at 516 h from setting; treatment 3: E hatch chicks that spent a further 24 h in the incubator before being sampled L at 516 h from setting. All L hatch chicks formed one treatment group which was sampled L at 516 h (i.e. L hatch chicks sampled L). It is not possible to sample L hatching chicks E hence this treatment is absent from the experimental design. Slow start incubation resulted in a higher total hatch percentage with a greater proportion of chicks hatching L, compared with the Control incubation. The L hatching chicks had significantly higher BA than the E hatching chicks. Of the E hatching chicks, those sampled both E and L had significantly lower BA than E hatching chicks fed for 24 h before L sampling. The E hatch, fed and sampled L chicks had the numerically highest BA, which was not significantly different from the BA of the L hatching chicks sampled L These results demonstrate that BA at hatch can be improved, either by extending the incubation period through a Slow start incubation profile, inducing L hatch, or alternatively, via the prompt provision of feed to E hatching chicks.

Abstract
Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos da umidade relativa do ar nas incubadoras (URI) e da idade da matriz leve sobre a eclodibilidade, qualidade dos pintos recém-eclodidos e o desempenho da progênie. Foram incubados 10.840 ovos, sendo os tratamentos definidos pela idade das matrizes Lohmann LSL(r) (26, 41 e 56 semanas) e pelos níveis de URI (48, 56 e 64%). Após a incubação, 1.620 pintos fêmeas foram alojados em galpão experimental convencional, de acordo com os tratamentos, até as 12 semanas de idade. Para a avaliação de eclodibilidade sobre ovos férteis e fêmeas refugos, o delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso no arranjo em parcelas subdivididas. A parcela foi a URI (três níveis) e a subparcela foi a idade da matriz (três idades). Os blocos foram constituídos pelos andares dos carrinhos de incubação, em que cada andar continha uma repetição de cada idade da matriz. Os nove tratamentos foram constituídos por 14 repetições cada. As repetições foram bandejas de incubação, constituindo 1.204 ovos por tratamento. Para a avaliação do desempenho das frangas, o delineamento experimental foi inteiramente ao acaso, constituído por um esquema fatorial 3x3 (três níveis de URI e três idades), com seis repetições de 30 aves em cada tratamento. A eclodibilidade sobre ovos férteis foi maior (P<0,05) com a utilização de 56% de umidade relativa do ar durante a incubação, independentemente da idade da matriz; e ovos de matrizes mais velhas (56 semanas) apresentaram eclodibilidade menor (P<0,05), independentemente do nível de umidade relativa do ar no interior das incubadoras. Não foram constatados efeitos da idade da matriz e URI sobre o percentual de pintos refugos. A URI ou a idade da matriz leve não afetam o desempenho da progênie.
