Abstract
There are different theories cited as the cause of Motion Sickness. Asymmetrical otolithic organ function is one of the etiology theories of motion sickness. In our study, the aim was to reveal whether there is a cause originating from the sacculocolic reflex pathway in the physiopathology of seasickness. The patient group included 15 man sailors with diagnosis of seasickness and the control group included 15 man sailors without seasickness in our study. Cervical evoked myogenic vestibular potential (cVEMP) findings were compared between the groups. In the right and left ears of sailors with seasickness, the mean latencies of the p13 and n23 waves at 100, 95, and 90 dB normal hearing level (nHL) levels were found significantly shorter than in the control group (p < 0.05, for all). In the seasickness group, cVEMP interaural wave amplitude asymmetry ratio at 100 nHL level were found significantly higher than the control group (p = 0.001). The findings of our study indicated that there may be reasons arising rom the sacculocolic reflex pathway in the pathophysiology of seasickness.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to offer normative data and age trends of an age-appropriate vestibular test protocol in a large group (n = 140) of school-aged children (6 to 13 years old) as well as to provide a practical and clinical framework for accurate performance and interpretation of vestibular test results in this specific age group. DESIGN The typically developing participants (mean age of 9.51 ± 2.04 years) were recruited to provide a representative group of 20 children for each of the seven age groups that were composed of children aged from 6 to 13 years in 1-year intervals. Each age group consisted of 10 boys and 10 girls. The protocol comprises the video head impulse test, and cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential assessments to provide a child-friendly, noninvasive, short, and portable test battery, which is equally applicable in the hospital and office-practice, and which provides information on the integrity of all five parts of the peripheral vestibular system. RESULTS The study demonstrates that all included tests and methods, with an overall test duration of 25 min 12 sec ± 5 min 10 sec, were feasible to perform in primary school-aged children, taking into account some practical adaptations. Concerning the video head impulse test, no clinically relevant sex and age effects were noted. However, t tests revealed significant differences for the mean gain of the horizontal (right > left; t[139] = 14.563; p < 0.001) and posterior semicircular canals (left > right; t[139] = -4.823; p < 0.001) between both sides. For the cVEMP assessment, no laterality differences were observed for any of the parameters, but a significantly shorter N1 latencies in the youngest age categories (<8 years), compared with the oldest groups were observed [F(6,118) = 8.336; p < 0.001; partial ƞ² = 0.298]. For all oVEMP parameters, no laterality, sex, or age differences were seen. On the basis of the presented normative data, cutoff criteria were proposed with accompanying clinical recommendations to perform vestibular function testing in this target population. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study in a large group of school-aged children offering normative data and age trends of an age-appropriate vestibular test protocol that evaluates the integrity of all parts of the peripheral vestibular organ. The reported normative values and clinical cutoff values will enable appropriate and age-specific interpretation of clinical and scientific results. Moreover, in combination with extensive history taking, and additional vestibular testing (e.g., rotatory chair test, caloric testing) when needed, the results of this study may support clinicians in the diagnosis of side-specific and location-specific vestibular deficits, which is required for accurate counseling and referral for further follow-up and/or intervention.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Vestibular dysfunction is a debilitating disorder frequently encountered in neurological and otological settings. The vestibular system is a complex network between peripheral and central mechanisms. This innate complexity of the vestibular system necessitates objective test procedures for evidence-based diagnostic formulations and intervention. Objective tests aid in the evaluation of both peripheral and central vestibular pathologies. Establishing and availability of comprehensive normative data for these objective tests is crucial for clinicians and researchers alike. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a prospective study involving 120 participants (both males and females) aged between 18 and 55 years. All participants were right-handed individuals and had no significant medical history. On pre-set protocols, cVEMP (cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential), oVEMP (ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential), vHIT (video head impulse test), and VNG (videonystagmography) were done. RESULTS While all participants (n=120) underwent cVEMP, oVEMP, vHIT, saccade, smooth pursuit, and optokinetic tests, only 109 participants consented to the caloric test. Each test's mean, standard deviation, median, quartile, and third quartiles have been recorded. A right-left comparison yielded no significant difference on cVEMP, oVEMP, caloric test, smooth pursuit, and optokinetic test. However, few vHIT and saccade parameters did reveal significant differences. DISCUSSION This study presents comprehensive normative data for cVEMP, oVEMP, vHIT, caloric test on VNG, and oculomotor tests (smooth pursuit, saccade, optokinetic) on VNG. The test results were in concordance with previously published data. The significant difference between the right and left sides in vHIT may be because of the monocular goggles used for the testing. CONCLUSION This study brings out the normative data for various vestibular tests on individuals aged between 18-55 years. This information could aid both clinicians and researchers working in the field of vestibular science.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Vestibular assessments in children are essential for the early identification of vestibular and balance dysfunctions. Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials, cervical (cVEMPs) and ocular (oVEMPs) have been reported to be feasible and effective when assessing otolith function in children. The main aim of the study was to obtain normative data for cVEMPs and oVEMPs from preschool and primary school-aged Malaysian children. METHODS A group of 33 healthy children, aged from 5 years 9 months-12 years 4 months (mean ± SD = 8.83 ± 1.92 years), was recruited. Their otolith saccular function was assessed using 750 Hz tone burst for cVEMPs (with ER3A insert phone), while their utricular function was assessed using Brüel & Kjaer Mini-shaker Type 4810 (Naerum, Denmark) for oVEMPs. RESULTS For cVEMPs, the mean value of P13 latency, N23 latency, P13-N23 interamplitude and asymmetry ratio were 12.62 ± 1.38 ms, 19.85 ± 1.95 ms, 92.47 ± 50.35 μV and 14.03 ± 9.75%, respectively. For oVEMPs, the mean value of N10 latency, P15 latency, N10-P15 interamplitude and asymmetry ratio were 9.23 ± 1.07 ms, 14.41 ± 1.04 ms, 10.32 ± 5.65 μV and 15.84 ± 11.49%, respectively. Two-way ANOVA analysis found that ear laterality and gender had no significant effect on all cVEMPs and oVEMPs parameters. No significant correlation was found between age and all VEMPs parameters. CONCLUSIONS The normative data for cVEMPs and oVEMPs obtained in this study can be used as a guide by health professionals to assess saccular and utricular functions among children age from 5 to 12 years of age.

Abstract
Common pitfalls in vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) recording methods have been extensively outlined by several reviews. Conversely, the robustness of research methodology employed for the design and conduct of VEMP studies has never been appraised. To fill this void, we conducted a scoping review to map and evaluate the overall quality of the existing literature on VEMPs in central neurological disorders. Five databases were searched from inception to October 2018 for case-control studies on multiple sclerosis (MS), cerebellar and/or brainstem strokes, Parkinson's disease (PD), migraine, and tumors of the cerebellopontine angle. Study quality was assessed using the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality criteria (AHRQ). The 11-criteria AHRQ scoring system revealed that PD studies achieved a score of 5/11, migraine and cerebellar and/or brainstem stroke a score of 4/11, MS and tumors of the cerebellopontine angle a score of 3/11. Age was found to be one of the main sources of case-control imbalance: compared with controls, cases were significantly older with a 3.6-yr difference in MS studies, 6 yr in PD, up to 12 yr in stroke and tumors. Regardless of pathological condition, case-control groups were found unmatched also by gender. Post hoc power calculations revealed that 53% of the studies achieved the minimum statistical power of 80%. This scoping review revealed low research quality across the literature on VEMPs in central neurological disorders. Scoping lines are provided on actions to be undertaken in future studies to establish a common methodological platform and enhance the quality of research in this field. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Robust methodology is a prerequisite for any type of research, particularly for observational designs such as those employed in vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) research. On these premises, this scoping review provides methodological guidelines to improve validity, accuracy and consistency of clinical outcomes from VEMP studies involving central nervous system disorders. In fact, the high risk for bias that is inherent to poor methodology threatens the validity of the findings of works that are technically sound but methodologically flawed.

Abstract
It has been recognized for some time that females appear to be overrepresented in the incidence of many vestibular disorders, and recent epidemiological studies further support this idea. While it is possible that this is due to a reporting bias, another possibility is that there are actual differences in the incidence of vestibular dysfunction between males and females. If this is true, it could be due to a sexual dimorphism in vestibular function and therefore dysfunction, possibly related to the hormonal differences between females and males, although the higher incidence of vestibular dysfunction in females appears to last long after menopause. Many other neurochemical differences exist between males and females, however, that could be implicated in sexual dimorphism. This review critically explores the possibility of sexual dimorphism in vestibular function and dysfunction, and the implications it may have for the treatment of vestibular disorders.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases are a growing problem in developing countries; therefore, there is an ongoing intensive search for new approaches to treat these disorders. Currently, cellular therapies are focused on healing the damaged heart by implanting stem cells modified with pro-angiogenic factors. This approach ensures that the introduced cells are capable of fulfilling the complex requirements of the environment, including the replacement of the post-infarction scar with cells that are able to contract and promote the formation of new blood vessels that can supply the ischaemic region with nutrients and oxygen. This study focused on the genetic modification of human skeletal muscle cells (SkMCs). We chose myoblast cells due to their close biological resemblance to cardiomyocytes and the placental growth factor (PlGF) gene due to its pro-angiogenic potential. In our in vitro studies, we transfected SkMCs with the PlGF gene using electroporation, which has previously been proven to be efficient and generate robust overexpression of the PlGF gene and elevate PlGF protein secretion. Moreover, the functionality of the secreted pro-angiogenic proteins was confirmed using an in vitro capillary development assay. We have also examined the influence of PlGF overexpression on VEGF-A and VEGF-B, which are well-known factors described in the literature as the most potent activators of blood vessel formation. We were able to confirm the overexpression of VEGF-A in myoblasts transfected with the PlGF gene. The results obtained in this study were further verified in an animal model. These data were able to confirm the potential therapeutic effects of the applied treatments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Emerging evidence suggests that children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) present more difficulties in standing and walking balance than typically developing children. Most of previous studies have assessed these functions using postural and sensory organization tests showing differences in balance performance between control and ADHD children. However, to date, it is unknown whether these balance alterations are accompanied with vestibular dysfunction. The principal aim of this study is to evaluate vestibular otolith function in ADHD and matched control children. METHODS We assessed vestibular otolith function in children with ADHD and controls using the subjective visual vertical (SVV) bucket test and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs). In addition, gait and balance were evaluated using the dynamic gait index (DGI) and computerized posturography. RESULTS Non-significant differences between groups were obtained in SVV evaluation. DGI results show lower scores for overall test performance in children with ADHD (p < 0.001), while computerized postural recordings showed significant differences for the limit of stability between groups (p = 0.02). cVEMPs in response to 500 Hz tone bursts presented at 100 dB were absent or reduced in children with ADHD, as revealed by differences in P1 and N1 peak-to-peak amplitudes between groups (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION These findings suggest that vestibular brainstem reflexes are altered in a subset of children with ADHD. We propose to include cVEMP reflexes in the clinical evaluation of ADHD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine age-related changes in vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) function in community-dwelling adults, and evaluate these for associations with demographic characteristics and cardiovascular risk factors. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis within the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA), a longitudinal prospective cohort study. SETTING Vestibular testing laboratory within an acute care teaching hospital. PATIENTS Community-dwelling adults enrolled in the BLSA. INTERVENTION(S) Horizontal VOR gain measurement using video head-impulse testing and visual acuity testing. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) VOR gain was calculated as the ratio of eye velocity to head velocity. Demographic and cardiovascular risk factor data were collected through study questionnaires. RESULTS One hundred nine subjects were analyzed with mean age (SD) 69.9 years (14.2), with a range from 26 to 92 years. VOR gain remained stable from age 26 to 79 after which it significantly declined at a rate of 0.012/year (p = 0.033) in adjusted analyses. Individuals aged 80 years or older had a nearly 8-fold increased odds of VOR gain less than 0.80 relative to those aged less than 80 years in multivariate models (prevalence of 13.2% vs. 2.8%; OR 7.79, 95% CI: 1.04-58.38). Otherwise, VOR gain did not differ significantly across demographic or cardiovascular risk groups. CONCLUSION We report age-related decline in VOR function in individuals aged 80 years and older. Further analyses are in progress to establish the significance of these VOR abnormalities to functional and mobility outcomes in older individuals.

Abstract
Introduction There is still no consensus in the literature as to the best acoustic stimulus for capturing vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP). Low-frequency tone bursts are generally more effective than high-frequency, but recent studies still use clicks. Reproducibility is an important analytical parameter to observe the reliability of responses. Objective To determine the reproducibility of p13 and n23 latency and amplitude of the VEMP for stimuli with different tone-burst frequencies, and to define the best test frequency. Methods Cross-sectional cohort study. VEMP was captured in 156 ears, on the sternocleidomastoid muscle, using 100 tone-burst stimuli at frequencies of 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz, and sound intensity of 95 dB nHL. Responses were replicated, that is, recorded three times on each side. Results No significant difference was observed for p13 and n23 latencies of the VEMP, captured at three moments with tone-burst stimuli at 250, 500, and 1000 Hz. Only the frequency of 2000 Hz showed a difference between captures of this potential (p < 0.001). p13 and n23 amplitude analysis was also similar in the test–retest for all frequencies analyzed. Conclusion p13 and n23 latencies and amplitudes of VEMP for tone-burst stimuli at frequencies of 250, 500, and 1000 Hz are reproducible.
