Abstract
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) can spread from animals to humans, but how it adapts to infect both is not fully understood. Our review aimed to determine the prevalence of MRSA in livestock, poultry, and companion animals in different countries, including Bangladesh, the Hong Kong SAR, Mainland China, and Sri Lanka. Articles were collected using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL, and Google Scholar. Only prevalence studies that followed the PICO guidelines were included. A random-effects model meta-analysis was used to pool the data. The quality of the evidence and bias were assessed using the GRADEpro and Cochrane collaboration tools. Out of 1438 articles, 69 studies were eligible for meta-analysis. The studies showed significant heterogeneity (I2 = 97.00%, p < 0.0001) in the prevalence of MRSA colonization. Therefore, a random-effects model was used to determine the pooled prevalence of MRSA colonization, which was found to be 4.92% (95% CI: 3.79% to 6.18%). Begg's test (p = 0.0002) and Egger's test (p = 0.0044) revealed publication bias. Subgroup analysis of the pooled prevalence of MRSA showed a significant difference (p < 0.00001) when the subgroups were divided by country, MRSA detection method, whether pre-enrichment was performed or not, study period, sample collection location, and study population. Although significant factors can partially explain the heterogeneity, it is crucial to recognize the heterogeneity within different subgroups. The pooled prevalence of MRSA was found to vary significantly (p < 0.00001) among the study periods and has increased since the study period of 2020. Therefore, it is crucial to continuously monitor and implement measures to control the spread of MRSA in animals to minimize the risk of transmission to humans.

Abstract
For decades now, DNA fingerprinting by means of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) continues to be the most widely used to separate large DNA molecules and distinguish between different strains in alternating pulses. This is done by isolating intact chromosomal DNA and using restriction enzymes with specific restriction sites to generate less than 30 restriction fragments from 50 Kb to 10 Mbp. These results make clone-specific band profiles easy to compare. Specialized equipment is required for the optimization of DNA separation and resolution, among which a contour-clamped homogeneous electric field (CHEF) apparatus is the most commonly used. As a result, the PFGE analysis of a bacterial genome provides useful information in terms of epidemiological investigations of different bacterial pathogens. For Staphylococcus aureus subtyping, despite its limitations and the emergence of alternative methods, PFGE analysis has proven to be an adequate choice and the gold standard for determining genetic relatedness, especially in outbreak detection and short-term surveillance in the veterinary field.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a major causative agent of mastitis and is resistant to many antibiotics. Thus, there is a need to characterize the genetic determinants of S. aureus erythromycin resistance, such as ermA, ermB and ermC. The current study aimed to determine the phenotypic and genotypic erythromycin resistance profile and relatedness of S. aureus recovered from bovine mastitis and humans in close contact. A total of 14 mastitis-infected buffalo milk samples and 16 samples from their respective milkers were collected from different farms of Lahore, Pakistan. The antibiotic resistance profile was determined through the disk diffusion test. The overall prevalence of S. aureus in mastitis-affected buffaloes was found to be 75%, of which 52.1% were resistant to erythromycin and 42.8% to clindamycin. S. aureus isolates recovered from milker nasal samples showed 56.25% resistance to erythromycin and 44% resistance to clindamycin. Genotypic antibiotic resistance profiles were determined from 14 milk samples through PCR. Overall, eight (52.1%), three (21.4%) and five (35.7%) S. aureus isolates were positive for the ermA, ermB and ermC genes, respectively. Moreover, 16 milker nasal S. aureus isolates were also tested for the presence of ermA, ermB and ermC genes. The ermA, ermB and ermC genes were observed in nine(56.7%), five (31.3%) and seven (43.7%) isolates, respectively. A significant association was shown between phenotypic and genotypic erythromycin resistance. The results indicate both that there are sufficient genetic similarities, and the actual transmission of erythromycin resistance genes between these two hosts of S. aureus.

Abstract
Bovine mastitis could reduce the milk production and the quality of the bulk tank milk (BTM). Antibiotic treatments through intramammary or parenteral methods are being widely used in dairy farms. A cross-sectional study to investigate for general farm management and pre-test the questionnaire was performed in Southwestern Yunnan province, China. A total of 134 dairy farms were included. Milking cows of each farm were determined for the presence of clinical (CM) and sub-clinical (SCM) mastitis using the California Mastitis Test (CMT). Rates of CM and SCM in studied farms ranged from 2-11%, and 24-69%, respectively. The incidence of antibiotic residues in BTM of all farms was very high (32%, 44/134). All antibiotic contaminated samples were from smallholder dairy farms. Factors significantly associated with the presence of antibiotic contamination included farm region, antibiotics usage, persons performing mastitis treatment, and rates of CM. Rates of CM were significantly associated with the farm region, cleanliness of udders before milking, and the number of milking cows. Our results emphasize that the risk factors of dairy farm management should be paid attention, which can reduce mastitis prevalence and antibiotic contamination in BTM in Southwestern China.

Abstract
This study aimed to (1) estimate the prevalence of cow-level high somatic cell count (SCC) in Chinese dairy herds and (2) identify potential factors associated with cow- and herd-level SCC variables. The monthly data on dairy herd improvement were collected from a total of 131 dairy herds in 11 provinces in China in 2019. Mixed models were constructed using the cow composite milk SCC and the variance of cow SCC as dependent variables separately and parity, seasons, days in milk (DIM), herd size, and farm types (family-owned vs. company-owned) as fixed effects, accounting for the nested random herd and cow effect. We used negative binomial regression using herd-level SCC-related variables, namely, monthly proportion of high SCC, monthly proportion of new high SCC, monthly proportion of chronic high SCC, and monthly proportion of new chronic high SCC as dependent variables separately against seasons, herd size, and farm types with the random herd effect. The overall average prevalence of high SCCs for each month per farm was 0.26 (2.5–97.5% quantile: 0–0.56). Company-owned farms performed better in herd SCC management. Seasons were significantly associated with all the aforementioned variables, and summer and autumn were the seasons associated with worse outcomes in herd SCCs. This study is the first to assess high SCC in a large number of Chinese dairy herds, which is useful for farms to tailor the on-farm mastitis control programs in China.

Abstract
In the present study, subclinical mastitis (SCM) and clinical mastitis (CM) prevalence for various countries in the World were calculated by using online and offline databases. The SCM and CM prevalence studies reported during 1967-2019 were collected, reviewed, and a meta-analysis was done in R-Software. A total of 222 and 150 studies from the World and 103 and 37 studies from India on SCM and CM, respectively were included. The pooled prevalence of SCM and CM were 42% [Confidence Interval (CI) 38-45%, Prediction Interval (PI) 10-83%] and 15% [CI 12-19%, PI 1-81%] in the World respectively, 45% [CI 40-49%, PI 11-84%] and 18% [CI 14-23%, PI 3-60%] in India respectively. Continent-wise analysis indicated a higher prevalence of SCM in North America and CM in Europe and among the countries, a higher SCM prevalence in Uganda and CM in the United Kingdom was observed. Further, species-wise indicated a higher SCM and CM prevalence in buffaloes of the World than the cattle. Based on method-wise, SCM and CM prevalence were high in somatic cell count and clinical examination, respectively in the World. The SCM prevalence was higher than CM and indicated the importance of SCM in dairy cattle. This might result in low milk productivity in dairying and may set off losses to dairy farmers. Hence, there is an urgent need to reduce the SCM and CM prevalence by implementing scientific dairy management, good feeding practices, and timely therapeutic interventions for increasing the benefits from dairying to the farmers in the World.

Abstract
This study investigated the occurrence and resistance rates of Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from raw milk in the dairy farms over two seasons (spring and autumn) and across four regions that included 11 provinces in China. In total, 750 raw milk samples from the 405 dairy farms were collected. Fifteen antimicrobial agents were tested for antimicrobial resistance via disk diffusion tests, and PCR tests were performed to identify drug resistance genes of S. aureus isolates. Out of 750 samples, 276 (36.8%) were positive for S. aureus, with 150 (41.1%) being positive in spring and 126 (32.7%) being positive in autumn. The occurrence rate of S. aureus in northeastern China (45%) was higher than that in western China (33%) and southern China (31.9%), respectively, and the rate significantly (p < 0.05) differed from those of western China and southern China. Of 276 isolates, 261 (94.6%) strains were resistant to more than 1 antimicrobial drug, and 193 (69.9%) strains were multidrug resistant. The blaZ (46.3%), dfrG (35.5%), and tetM (27.2%) genes were detected at a high frequency in the S. aureus strains. Our data revealed a variation (p < 0.05) in the resistance patterns in the different regions and across the two seasons. The occurrence and drug resistance rates of S. aureus isolated from raw milk obtained from dairy farms may still cause severe problems in China.

Prevalence and antimicrobial-resistance phenotypes and genotypes of Escherichia coli isolated from raw milk samples from mastitis cases in four regions of China. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective was to find the differences in the prevalence and resistance of Escherischia coli isolated from raw milk samples from mastitis cases in four regions of China. METHODS A total of 750 bovine raw milk samples from mastitis cases were collected from four regions of China over two seasons. Antimicrobial resistance against 29 antimicrobial agents was determined, and 27 drug-resistant genes were tested. RESULTS Eighty-three strains (11.1%) of E. coli were isolated and identified. No significant differences in the number of E. coli isolates were observed between the two sampling seasons in the same regions (P>0.05). However, a significant difference in E. coli prevalence was found among the four different regions (P<0.01). The isolates were most frequently resistant to penicillin (100%), acetylspiramycin (100%), lincomycin (98.8%), oxacillin (98.8%) and sulphamethoxazole (53%). All the E. coli strains were multiresistant to at least three antimicrobial classes, and the most frequent multidrug-resistance patterns for the isolates were resistant to three (36.1%) or four (39.8%) classes of drugs simultaneously. The blaTEM gene (n=69; 83.1%) was the most frequently detected resistance gene. The most frequent gene combinations were a four-gene pattern of blaCTX-M-sulII-blaTEM-sulI (n=13; 15.7%) and a three-gene pattern of blaCTX-M-aph (3)-II-blaTEM (n=11; 13.3%). CONCLUSIONS This study indicated that there is a high incidence of E. coli with a great variation in resistance patterns and resistance genes; this is a matter of great concern for public and animal health in China.

Abstract
One manner in which plant-derived compounds exert their antibiotic potential is the synergism, a positive interaction between two compounds. Studies indicate that the use of plant extracts combined with antimicrobials may promote a significant reduction of the minimum inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics for bacterial strains. This study aimed to evaluate the activity of plant extracts and antibiotics as well as their combination on Staphylococcus aureus. The activity of 15 plant extracts was evaluated using diffusion assay. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and the interactions between the extracts and antibiotics as well as compound emodin were evaluated with the checkerboard method. The active extracts were a hexane extract of the leaves of Baccharis dracunculifolia and the ethanol extracts of the leaves of Plectranthus ornatus, Inga edulis, Salvia officinalis and Senna macranthera. The Plectranthus ornatus extract displayed synergism with ampicillin (a β-lactam), kanamycin and gentamicin (aminoglycosides), with 8-fold reductions in the MIC. The same reduction was observed for the extracts of Salvia officinalis and Senna macranthera, which displayed the lowest MIC. Using these combinations resulted in a reduction in the minimum dose required for effective antimicrobial effects, which is interesting because it may decrease both the risk of side effects and the costs of treatment.

Abstract
In recent years, group B streptococcus (GBS) has become an important pathogen that causes infections in many neonatal organs, including the brain, lung, and eye (Ballard et al., 2016). A series of studies performed on GBS infections in western countries have revealed that GBS is one of the primary pathogens implicated in perinatal infection, and GBS infections are a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality in the United States (Decheva et al., 2013). In China, GBS is mainly found by screens for adult urogenital tract and perinatal infections, and neonatal GBS infections have been rarely reported. The incidence rate of early-onset neonatal GBS disease is thought to be lower in China than in western countries; however, this data is controversial since it also reflects the clinical interest in GBS (Dabrowska-Szponar and Galinski, 2001).

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is a common causative agent of bovine mastitis in dairy herds worldwide. This study was designed to assess the prevalence of mastitis in cows through screening tests and molecular characterization of Staphylococcus aureus strains. Out of 175 randomly screened cows, mastitis was detected in 50 cows by California Mastitis Test (CMT), and from those mastitic cows, 200 quarter milk samples were collected for subsequent culture and PCR based identification. The herd, cow and quarter level prevalence of mastitis was 73.3, 28.6 and 29.5% respectively, and subclinical mastitis (SCM) was the predominant type in all cases. According to bacteriology the overall prevalence of herd, cow and quarter level Staphylococcus aureus mastitis was 72.7, 74.0 and 62.0%, respectively, and the pathogen was mostly associated with clinical mastitis (CM). Cows breed, parity, daily milk yield, regular teat dipping, and dry cow therapy were significantly associated (P < 0.05) risk factors for mastitis onset. This study identifies 145 Staphylococcus aureus isolates which varied greatly with the categories of mastitis (higher in CM), udder quarter location (highest in right rear quarters), and to a lesser extent in the study areas (P < 0.05). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed that 79.3% Staphylococcus aureus strains were resistant to at least one antimicrobial, 49.0% to two or more antimicrobials, and clinical isolates showed more resistance to all tested antibiotics. The highest resistance rate was found to oxytetracyclin, and no resistance to ceftriaxone and azithromycin. Seven enterotoxin gene profile were detected in the tested isolates, and mecA was found in 20.0% isolates indicating the emergence and spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The isolates were carrying genes in combination, and were found higher in SCM cases. In this study, plasmids (>23 kb to 2.9 kb) were detected in 70.3% strains, and 54.9% plasmid bearing strains were multiple drug resistant (MDR). Thus, the high prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus mastitis is an important concern for diary industry of Bangladesh since the strains of this pathogen is becoming more resistant to commercially available antimicrobials, and this is an alarming concern for both animal and public health.

Abstract
The study reported in this Research Communication was conducted to characteriseStaphylococcus aureusisolates recovered from mastitic bovine milk from dairy herds in Argentina. A total of 829 mastitic milk samples, both clinical and subclinical, were collected from 21 farms by veterinarians and submitted to the laboratory for testing from which 229S. aureusisolates were recovered, an isolation rate of 28·1%. These isolates were tested for susceptibility to the antibiotics penicillin, erythromycin and clindamycin. Of the 229 isolates, 53 (23·1%) were resistant to penicillin, 31 (13·5%) to erythromycin and 28 (12·2%) to clindamycin. All isolates were negative for themecA,mecC andpvlgenes by PCR. Southernblot hybridisation revealed that theermC gene was located on plasmid bands. Eighty isolates were randomly selected from the 229 for further characterisation. Restriction analysis of chromosomal DNA with Cf9I followed by PFGE of the 80 isolates revealed 23 distinct pulsotypes at 80% similarity. Seven major types (A, B, N, P, S, T, U and V) accounted for 68·7% of these isolates and 12 pulsotypes (A, B, F, G, J, K, M, N, P, S, T and U) occurred on more than one farm indicating genetic diversity within the farms. MLST of a representative isolate from dominant types identified the STs 97 705, 746, 2102 and 2187 with ST97 being the most predominant. Antibiotic susceptibility testing showed that 53·7% of the 80 randomly selected isolates were resistant to at least one of the three antibiotics tested. To our knowledge, this study represents the first large scale molecular studies onS. aureusisolates from dairy farms in Argentina.

Abstract
Background Staphylococcus aureus is the predominant bacterium responsible for various diseases in animals and humans. Preventive strategies could be better implemented by understanding the prevalence, genetic patterns, and the presence of enterotoxin and biofilm-producing genes along with the antibiotic susceptibility of this organism. This study was conducted in Rajasthan, the northwestern state of India, holding the largest population of cattle that makes it the second largest milk producer in India and no such prior information is available on these aspects. Methods A total of 368 individual quarter bovine raw milk samples were collected from 13 districts of Rajasthan, and screened for the presence of S. aureus. Microbiological and molecular approaches were followed for bacterial identification. Genetic diversity was determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP) of coagulase gene (coa), whereas enterotoxin and biofilm-producing genes were studied by PCR analysis. Antibiotic strips were employed to study the antibiotic resistance among strains. Results In all, 73 S. aureus strains were obtained from 368 bovine raw milk samples out of that only 30 showed the presence of coa. Nine types of coa patterns ranging from 730 to 1130 bp were observed among these isolates. PCR–RFLP of coa distinguished the isolates into 15 genotypic patterns, of which patterns I, IV, V, and VI were predominant. Of the isolates, 30% were positive for sec, 10% for sea, and 3.3% for seb; these genes are responsible for enterotoxin production, whereas all isolates were found positive for icaAD and eno. The prevalence rates of other biofilm-producing genes fnbA, clfB, ebpS, sasG, fnbB, sasC, cna, bap, fib and, bbp were 97, 93, 90, 80, 80, 77, 53, 27, 10, and 6.6%, respectively. Twenty-seven (90%) strains were multidrug resistant, of which 15 were methicillin resistant. Maximum sensitivity was reported for kanamycin and it could be considered as a drug of choice for controlling S. aureus mediated cattle infections in the studied regions. Conclusions Overall, these strains could cause several diseases to humans, insisting the need for developing a stricter hygiene program for improving milking practices and animal health.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Isolation of Staphylococcus aureus (Staph. aureus) from Holstein milk samples with mastitis and nonmastitis was conducted to estimate its prevalence, antimicrobial resistance and toxin genes. A total of 353 milk samples were collected from three Chinese Holstein herds. Fifty-three Staph. aureus isolates collected from 29 Staph. aureus-positive samples were characterized via antimicrobial susceptibility, toxin genes and Pulsed-field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) profiles. The prevalence of Staph. aureus was 4·0-9·5% in mastitic and 7·3-11·5% in nonmastitic samples in the analysed herds. Approximately 61·0% of Staph. aureus strains isolated from mastitis cows were resistant to ≥10 antimicrobials compared with 0% of isolates with nonmastitis. The most frequently observed super antigenic toxin gene was pvl (41·5%) followed by seh + pvl (13·2%). We did not find mecA-positive methicillin-resistant Staph. aureus (MRSA) strains, while mecA-negative MRSA strains were identified in the three herds. PFGE results suggested potential transmission of Staph. aureus strains in different farms. These results open new insights into Staph. aureus transmission and antimicrobial resistance of Holstein dairy cows and into developing strategies for udder health improvement of dairy cattle. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Significantly higher levels of antibiotic resistance of Staphylococcus aureus strains were detected in the lactating Holstein milk with clinical mastitis compared with that without clinical mastitis. PFGE results suggest potential transmission of Staph. aureus strains in different dairy farms. The results imply that the dairy farms need to select effective antibiotics in the treatment of Staph. aureus-infected cows and prevent the transmission of Staph. aureus strains from one herd to another.

Abstract
Mastitis is broadly defined as the inflammation of the mammary gland; however, the concept of mastitis is customized to address its social and clinical impact in the case of humans and the health, welfare, and economic consequences for other mammals. There are many microbial, host, and environmental factors that influence the development of mastitis. Some are common to all mammals as well as inherent to each species. Together these factors influence the most prevalent etiological agents for each species and might determine the possibility of interspecies transmission with its consequences to public health. The present review will summarize and compare reports on mastitis etiology and its epidemiology in humans and food animal species.

Abstract
The molecular diversity, antibiotic resistance patterns and presence of resistance genes were determined in Staphylococcus aureus isolates from cases of bovine mastitis in a dairy cattle herd in China. Multiple locus variable number tandem repeat analysis was used for molecular typing. Resistance was determined through minimum inhibitory concentrations and resistance genes were detected by PCR. There was low molecular diversity; one predominant strain (type I) accounted for the majority of cases of S. aureus mastitis in the herd and this strain had a high frequency of resistance to penicillin and tetracycline. The most prevalent resistance genes were blaZ, ermC and tetM.

Abstract
To improve the diagnosis of Staphylococcus aureus mastitis and its potential antibiotic resistance in dairy cattle, a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed for simultaneous species identification and detection of penicillin, erythromycin, and tetracycline resistance genes. The assay was first verified using 85 clinical isolates of S. aureus, and its effectiveness was evaluated by testing 99 mastitic milk samples. The multiplex PCR assay had high detection sensitivity in samples from both groups (100% agreement with single-gene PCR), with detection limits of 100–103 colony-forming units (cfu)/ml. The detection limits of the current assay for nuc, blaZ, erm B, erm C, tet K, and tet M genes were 101, 101, 102, 100, 102, and 103 cfu/ml, respectively. There was a good correlation between genotypic analysis by PCR and phenotypic determination using S. aureus species identification and susceptibility testing methods. High diagnostic sensitivities and specificities were shown for the target resistance genes ( blaZ gene, 97.2% and 92.9%; ERM resistance genes, 100% and 95.6%; TET resistance genes, 100% and 96%). Results suggested that the current PCR assay could be used as an alternative diagnostic method in the routine diagnosis for rapid, sensitive, and specific detection of S. aureus and its associated antibiotic resistance genes in mastitic milk samples.

Abstract
A total of 402 Staphylococcus aureus isolates from bovine mastitis milk collected during 2003-2009 in Korea were tested for susceptibility to 20 antimicrobial agents. All S. aureus isolates were susceptible to 11 of 20 antimicrobials tested; no resistance was observed against pirlimycin, telithromycin, novobiocin, penicillin/novobiocin, quinupristin/dalfopristin, clindamycin, rifampin, ciprofloxacin, trimethprim/sulfamethoxazol, vancomycin, and linezolid. Over 66% of the S. aureus isolates were resistant to penicillin. Resistance was also seen for gentamicin (11.9%), erythromycin (7.7%), methicillin (oxacillin and cefoxitin, 6.2%), and tetracycline (4.2%). No noticeable change was observed in penicillin, gentamicin, and erythromycin resistance over the 7-year period. Tetracycline resistance appeared to decrease consistently, whereas methicillin resistance was observed from 2005. About 2.7% (11/402) were resistant to three or more antimicrobials. Genotyping of the 17 methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolated from each cow revealed two staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) types (IV and IVa), three spa types (t286, t324, and untypable), and two sequence types (ST1 and ST72). Eleven of 17 (64.7%) MRSA strains belonged to SCCmec IVa-t324-ST72. The rest of strains belonged to SCCmec IVa-t286-ST1 (n = 3) and SCCmec IV-untypable-ST72 (n = 3). None of the MRSA carried the Panton-Valentine leukocidin gene. These characteristics are the same as those found in community-acquired (CA) MRSA strains prevalent in humans in Korea. Three pulsed-field gel electrophoresis types (A-C) were observed among the 17 MRSA strains examined, and 14 strains belonged to the same pulsed-field gel electrophoresis pattern regardless of their geographical origin and year of isolation. The results of this study provide evidence of CA-MRSA infection in dairy cattle for the first time in Korea.
