Opposing effects of different soil organic matter fractions on crop yields

Microbial community structure and carbon transformation characteristics of different aggregates in black soil

Background

Previous research on whole-soil measurements has failed to explain the spatial distribution of soil carbon transformations, which is essential for a precise understanding of the microorganisms responsible for carbon transformations. The microorganisms involved in the transformation of soil carbon were investigated at the microscopic scale by combining 16S rDNA sequencing technology with particle-level soil classification.

Methods

In this experiment,16S rDNA sequencing analysis was used to evaluate the variations in the microbial community structure of different aggregates in no-tillage black soil. The prokaryotic microorganisms involved in carbon transformation were measured before and after the freezing and thawing of various aggregates in no-tillage black soil. Each sample was divided into six categories based on aggregate grain size: >5, 2-5, 1-2, 0.5-1, 0.25-0.5, <0.25 mm, and bulk soil.

Results

The relative abundance of Actinobacteria phylum in <0.25 mm aggregates was significantly higher compared to that in other aggregates. The Chao1 index, Shannon index, and phylogenetic diversity (PD) whole tree index of <0.25 mm aggregates were significantly smaller than those of in bulk soil and >5 mm aggregates. Orthogonal partial least-squares discrimination analysis showed that the microbial community composition of black soil aggregates was significantly different between <1 and >1 mm. The redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that the organic carbon conversion rate of 0.25-0.5 mm agglomerates had a significantly greater effect on their bacterial community structure. Moreover, humic acid conversion rates on aggregates <0.5 mm had a greater impact on community structure. The linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) analysis and RDA analysis were combined. Bradyrhizobium, Actinoplane, Streptomyces, Dactylosporangium, Yonghaparkia, Fleivirga, and Xiangella in <0.25 mm aggregates were positively correlated with soil organic carbon conversion rates. Blastococcus and Pseudarthrobacter were positively correlated with soil organic carbon conversion rates in 0.25-0.5 mm aggregates. In aggregates smaller than 1 mm, the higher the abundance of functional bacteria that contributed to the soil's ability to fix carbon and nitrogen.

Discussion

There were large differences in prokaryotic microbial community composition between <1 and >1 mm aggregates. The <1 mm aggregates play an important role in soil carbon transformation and carbon fixation. The 0.25-0.5 mm aggregates had the fastest organic carbon conversion rate and increased significantly more than the other aggregates. Some genus or species of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria play a positive role in the carbon transformation of <1 mm aggregates. Such analyses may help to identify microbial partners that play an important role in carbon transformation at the micro scale of no-till black soils.

Biocrusts Modulate Climate Change Effects on Soil Organic Carbon Pools: Insights From a 9-Year Experiment

Accumulating evidence suggests that warming associated with climate change is decreasing the total amount of soil organic carbon (SOC) in drylands, although scientific research has not given enough emphasis to particulate (POC) and mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) pools. Biocrusts are a major biotic feature of drylands and have large impacts on the C cycle, yet it is largely unknown whether they modulate the responses of POC and MAOC to climate change. Here, we assessed the effects of simulated climate change (control, reduced rainfall (RE), warming (WA), and RE + WA) and initial biocrust cover (low (< 20%) versus high (> 50%)) on the mineral protection of soil C and soil organic matter quality in a dryland ecosystem in central Spain for 9 years. At low initial biocrust cover levels, both WA and RE + WA increased SOC, especially POC but also MAOC, and promoted a higher contribution of carbohydrates, relative to aromatic compounds, to the POC fraction. These results suggest that the accumulation of soil C under warming treatments may be transitory in soils with low initial biocrust cover. In soils with high initial biocrust cover, climate change treatments did not affect SOC, neither POC nor MAOC fraction. Overall, our results indicate that biocrust communities modulate the negative effect of climate change on SOC, because no losses of soil C were observed with the climate manipulations under biocrusts. Future work should focus on determining the long-term persistence of the observed buffering effect by biocrust-forming lichens, as they are known to be negatively affected by warming.

Large-scale farmer-led experiment demonstrates positive impact of cover crops on multiple soil health indicators

Cover crops are touted for their potential agronomic and environmental benefits, and are currently incentivized through state, federal and private investment in the USA. There is a need to quantify the impact of on-farm use of cover crops at spatial (2-5 years) and temporal (regional-to-national) scales aligned with such investment programmes. Here we report soil health data from a farmer-led trial of cover crops on 1,522 strip-years, from 78 farms across 9 US states over 5 years. We found that up to 5 years of cover crop use had small but increasing impacts on four of six selected soil health indicators, with active carbon concentration responding the most rapidly. Soil texture, the length of time a field was in the trial and a farm-level random effect were also strongly related to soil health properties. Our results fit with evidence from controlled trials and suggest that the use of cover crops can begin to influence soil health within several years after adoption.

Crop cover is more important than rotational diversity for soil multifunctionality and cereal yields in European cropping systems

In natural ecosystems, positive effects of plant diversity on ecosystem functioning have been widely observed, yet whether this is true in cropping systems remains unclear. Here we assessed the impact of crop diversification on soil microbial diversity, soil multifunctionality (SMF) and crop yields in 155 cereal fields across a 3,000 km north-south European gradient. Overall, crop diversity showed a relatively minor effect on soil microbial diversity, SMF and yields. In contrast, the proportion of time with crop cover (including cash crops, cover crops or forage leys) during the past ten-year crop rotation had a much stronger impact. This suggests that increasing crop cover can enhance both yields and soil functioning, while also providing habitat for soil microorganisms. We found that SMF did not positively contribute to crop yields, highlighting that care must be taken to balance the provision of food with environmentally beneficial functions and services, since they do not always go hand in hand.
