Abstract
BACKGROUND Higher suicide rates were observed in patients diagnosed with lymphoma. In this study, we accurately identified patients with high-risk lymphoma for suicide by constructing a nomogram with a view to effective interventions and reducing the risk of suicide. METHODS 235,806 patients diagnosed with lymphoma between 2000 and 2020 were picked from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and randomly divided into training (N = 165,064) and validation set (N = 70,742). A combination of the Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and Cox proportional hazards regression identified the predictors that constructed the nomogram. To assess the discrimination, calibration, clinical applicability, and generalization of this nomogram, we implemented receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC), calibration curves, decision curve analysis (DCA), and internal validation. The robustness of the results was assessed by the competing risks regression model. RESULTS Age at diagnosis, gender, ethnicity, marital status, stage, surgery, radiotherapy, and annual household income were key predictors of suicide in lymphoma patients. A nomogram was created to visualize the risk of suicide after a lymphoma diagnosis. The c-index for the training set was 0.773, and the validation set was 0.777. The calibration curve for the nomogram fitted well with the diagonal and the clinical decision curve indicated its clinical benefit. LIMITATION The effects of unmeasured and unnoticed biases and confounders were difficult to eliminate due to retrospective studies. CONCLUSION A convenient and reliable model has been constructed that will help to individualize and accurately quantify the risk of suicide in patients diagnosed with lymphoma.

Abstract
Cancer is a major public health concern associated with an increased risk of psychosocial distress and suicide. The reasons for this increased risk are still being characterized. The purpose of this study is to highlight existing observational studies on cancer-related suicides in the United States and identify gaps for future research. This work helps inform clinical and policy decision-making on suicide prevention interventions and ongoing research on the detection and quantification of suicide risk among cancer patients. We identified 73 peer-reviewed studies (2010-2022) that examined the intersection of cancer and suicide using searches of PubMed and Embase. Overall, the reviewed studies showed that cancer patients have an elevated risk of suicide when compared to the general population. In general, the risk was higher among White, male, and older cancer patients, as well as among patients living in rural areas and with lower socioeconomic status. Future studies should further investigate the psychosocial aspects of receiving a diagnosis of cancer on patients' mental health as well as the impact of new treatments and their availability on suicide risk and disparities among cancer patients to better inform policies.

Abstract
Background Women with ovarian cancer had the highest suicidal rate among all patients with gynecological malignancies, but no large studies about suicide and accidental death for women with ovarian cancers in detail were conducted. We aimed to determine the relative risk of suicide and accidental death among patients with ovarian cancer to that of the general population, and to identify risk factors associated with suicide and accidental death. Methods Data are from the SEER (surveillance, epidemiology, and end results) cancer registry of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer data from 18 registries for the years 1973–2016. The study population comprised 149,204 patients after inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated and Fine-Gray models were fitted to identify risk factors associated with suicidal and accidental death among cancer patients, with stratifications on demographic and tumor-related characteristics. Results Women with ovarian cancer had a higher risk of suicide and accidental death than the cancer-free group [SMR = 1.86; 95% CI (1.54–2.25) and SMR = 1.54; 95% CI (1.39–1.71)]. Subgroup analysis indicated that only patients with type II epithelial ovarian cancer [SMR = 2.31; 95% CI (1.83–2.91)] had an increased risk of suicide, and those with type I and type II epithelial ovarian cancer [SMR = 1.65; 95% CI (1.39–1.97) and SMR = 1.49; 95% CI (1.30–1.70)] were at a higher risk of accidental death. Patients with ovarian cancer who were younger, white, diagnosed with high-grade, non-metastatic cancer and pelvic exenteration were at a higher risk of suicide. The advanced age, earlier year of diagnosis, and non-metastatic cancer were associated with a higher risk of accidental death. Additionally, pelvic exenteration increased the risk of suicide but not the risk of accidental death among women with primary ovarian cancer. Conclusions Women with ovarian cancer had a higher risk of suicide and accidental death compared with the general population. The findings suggested that clinicians should identify high-risk subgroups of ovarian cancer patients for suicide and accidental death as early as possible, with appropriate prevention strategies.

Abstract
Purpose: Technology-assisted interventions are essential in supporting cancer survivors' psychosocial outcomes, especially for childhood, adolescent, and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors, a tech-savvy generation. This study aims to systematically evaluate review and meta-analyze technology-assisted interventions for childhood and AYA cancer survivors. Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, the study team used a pre-set of key words and searched studies across 11 electronic databases and 4 professional websites, and conducted a manual search of reference lists from published reviews. Meta-analysis of small sample size corrected Hedges' g was conducted using meta-regression with robust variance estimation. Results: Final analysis included a total of 28 clinical trials, including 237 effect sizes reported an overall statistically significant treatment effect of technology-assisted psychosocial interventions for childhood and AYA cancer survivors, g = 0.382, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.243 to 0.521, p < 0.0001. Subgroup analysis revealed that distraction-based interventions and interventions for psychosocial and emotional health were overall statistically significant, whereas interventions for childhood and AYA cancer survivors' cancer knowledge outcomes and physical and functional health outcomes were statistically nonsignificant. Moderator analysis found intervention target was a significant moderator. Conclusions: Technology-assisted interventions for childhood and AYA cancer survivors were overall effective across domains of survivorship outcomes. Favorable evidence was found primarily for childhood cancer survivors with limited support for AYA cancer survivors. Implications for Cancer Survivors: Although existing technology-assisted interventions are overall promising, research support for cancer survivors from different age groups and with different psychosocial challenges varies and should be considered individually.

Abstract
Our aim was to determine differences in the prevalence of mental health disorders between Black Americans living with sickle cell disease (SCD) and Black Americans with other, non-heritable medical conditions, or no medical conditions. We examined the prevalence of mental health disorders among a non-institutionalized, community sample of Black adults in the US from the National Survey of American Life. We compared the odds of mental health disorders between Black American adults with SCD and those with other medical conditions, or no medical condition. Among the SCD group, 38·8% reported at least one mental health disorder: 17·6% endorsed a mood disorder, 24·7% an anxiety disorder, 2·4% an eating disorder, and 11·8% a childhood disorder. Compared to those with other medical conditions, Black Americans with SCD had greater poverty, more children in the household, and were less likely to be married/cohabitating (all P < 0·05). Yet, Black Americans with SCD were not at greater odds of having a mental health disorder compared to those with other medical conditions. When compared to the group with no conditions, however, individuals with SCD had 2·57 greater odds of mood disorder (95% confidence interval: 1·43-4·65; P = 0·002). The effect remained when controlling for socioeconomic status, marital status, and perceived physical health. In this study, almost 40% of Black American adults with SCD presented with a mental health disorder. Prevalence of mental health disorders was similar among those with non-heritable medical conditions, but those without a medical condition had a lower prevalence than in SCD. Among Black Americans, there appear to be unmeasured factors, common across medical conditions, that are linked to mental health disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients diagnosed with lung cancer have a higher suicide rate than the general population and other cancer patients. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a prediction model for the individual risk for suicide after the diagnosis of lung cancer. METHODS Patients diagnosed with lung cancer between 2007 and 2016 were selected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and randomly divided into training and validation cohorts. Cox proportional hazard models were used to identify relevant predictors and construct prediction models. Additionally, graphic visualization methods were used to predict the risk for suicide within 5 years after the diagnosis of lung cancer. We used bootstrapping for the internal validation, Harrell's C-index for the discrimination, and a calibration plot for the calibration of the proposed model. RESULTS We obtained complete information on 112372 patients diagnosed with lung cancer from the SEER cohort. Multivariate Cox regression identified sex, race, marital status, tumour grade, surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy as significant predictors for suicide. A nomogram and a risk matrix were developed to visualize the risk for suicide within 5 years after lung cancer diagnosis. The bootstrapped and validated C-indices of the nomogram were 0.77 and 0.78, respectively. The calibration plot indicated good agreement between the prediction and actual observation. CONCLUSIONS The proposed model demonstrated good discrimination and calibration performance for predicting the risk for suicide within 5 years after lung cancer diagnosis. Reliable and feasible risk assessment tools can be promising for preventing unnecessary suicides among lung cancer patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The aim of this study was to summarize the literature on prevalence and risk factors for suicidality in cancer patients and to document the research on oncology healthcare professionals' strategies in identifying this risk. RECENT FINDINGS Cancer patients exhibit increased risk of suicidality compared with the general population. Various risk factors have been identified including sociodemographic factors such as poverty, being male and elderly as well as disease-related attributes such as cancer type and stage. The literature on how healthcare professionals identify suicide risk is sparse. Ten articles were found that focused on two main themes. These included information on systematic strategies in identifying suicide risk and factors that affect healthcare professionals' ability to identify risk in their patients. SUMMARY Although there is an immense amount of literature documenting the problem of suicidality among patients, the research on how healthcare professionals identify and respond to these indications in patients is nearly nonexistent. Cancer centres should implement standardized and systematic screening of cancer patients for suicidality and research on this patient population should collect and report these data. Ongoing training and education for healthcare professionals who work in the oncology setting on how to identify and respond to suicide risk among cancer patients is urgently needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This pilot clinical trial investigated solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) for psychological distress among adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients with cancer in China. METHODS Fifty Chinese AYA patients diagnosed with cancer were randomized into the treatment group (SFBT) and control group (active control). Psychological distress was measured by the brief symptom inventory and hope was measured by the Herth-Hope-Index. Treatment effects were analyzed using analysis-of-covariance and between-group small-sample-size corrected Hedges' g. RESULTS The results indicated that SFBT resulted in a significant reduction in the psychological distress and improvement in hope of AYA patients with cancer. Analyses of the 4-week posttreatment score suggest the short-term sustainability of SFBT for psychological distress among AYAs diagnosed with cancer. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS This study has demonstrated that SFBT's impact is statistically significant and clinically meaningful. The inclusion of positive emotions, i.e., hope, as part of the investigation also highlighted the significance of promoting positive emotions among AYA patients with cancer.

Abstract
Background It has been recognized that cancer is associated with a higher risk of suicide or accidental death. Earlier studies have evidenced that patients with malignant bone tumors usually experience psychological dysfunction and physical disability following surgery, which are shared risk factors between suicidal and accidental deaths. To our knowledge, there is no large population-based study on the risk of suicide or accidental death among patients with malignant bone tumors. Questions/purposes This study aimed to determine whether patients with primary malignant bone tumors are at a higher risk of suicide and accidental death than the general population and to identify the demographic and tumour-related characteristics and type of surgery associated with a higher risk of suicide and accidental death among these patients. Methods Overall, 50,817 patients diagnosed with primary malignant bone tumors between 1973 and 1975 were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. The standardised mortality ratio (SMR) was calculated based on the general population's mortality data, gathered by the National Center for Health Statistics. The Cox regression model was developed to determine risk factors associated with a higher risk of suicide and accidental death. Results Patients with primary malignant bone tumors had a higher risk of suicide and accidental death than the general population in the United States (US) (SMR = 2.17; 95% confidence interval (CI) [1.80-2.62] and SMR = 1.73; 95% CI [1.54-1.95]). Compared with limb salvage, amputation significantly increased the risk of suicide (SMR = 3.99; 95% CI [2.52-6.34], hazard ratio (HR) = 2.32; 95% CI [1.31-4.09]; P < 0.01) but did not increase the risk of accidental death (SMR = 1.61; 95% CI [1.07-2.42], HR = 1.11; 95% CI [0.71-1.74]; P = 0.65). Higher suicide risk was observed among older patients whose age at diagnosis was more than 60 years (HR = 4.04; 95% CI [1.98-8.26]; P < 0.001), males (HR = 3.48; 95% CI [2.16-5.62]; P < 0.001), and whites (HR = 3.71; 95% CI [1.17-11.73]; P < 0.001). The risk of suicide and accidental death was highest in the first year after diagnosis (SMR = 2.95; 95% CI [1.86-4.69] and SMR = 2.02; 95% CI [1.48-2.74]). Conclusion We first reported that patients with primary malignant bone tumors had a higher risk of suicide and accidental death than the general US population. Therefore, clinicians should pay more attention to the psychological status, physical function, and cognitive level of these survivors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with bladder cancer have a high risk of suicide. This study aimed to assess how bladder cancer increases suicide risk and to identify the demographic and clinical factors associated with suicidal death among patients with bladder cancer. METHODS Literature search of MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, Web of Sciences and Cochrane Library databases was conducted up to April 2020 to identify eligible studies related to the incidence and risk factors of suicide after bladder cancer diagnosis. Summary multivariate-adjusted risk estimates and their associated 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using inverse variance method with random or fixed-effect modeling. RESULTS Five retrospective cohorts comprising 563,680 patients with bladder cancer were included. Higher risk of suicide by 1.90-fold was observed among patients with bladder cancer (hazard ratio, HR = 1.90, 95% CI: 1.29-2.81; P = 0.001; I2 = 81.2%), especially in those aged 70 years or older (HR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.29-1.43; P < 0.001; I2 = 0%), unmarried (HR = 1.72, 95% CI: 1.61-1.83; P < 0.001; I2 = 0%), and those with regional bladder cancer (HR = 1.88, 95% CI: 1.10-3.21; P = 0.021; I2 = 96.3%), compared with those without bladder cancer. Furthermore, gender and race were not associated with increased suicide risk among patients with bladder cancer. CONCLUSIONS Suicide risk is increased among patients with bladder cancer, particularly those aged 70 years or older, unmarried and those with regional bladder cancer. Hence, early psychological support must be provided during the follow-up period of these special populations with a high suicide risk.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to explore the psychiatric comorbidities in cancer patients examined by the psychiatric consultation liaison services (CLP) in a general hospital. Furthermore, we intended to examine associations between certain cancers types and psychiatric disorders as well as to give an overview of the psychiatric treatments options that were recommended by the CLP. METHODS This retrospective analysis investigated 119 psychiatric consultations for cancer patients in a one year period. The assessment covered demographics and cancer diagnosis, psychiatric diagnosis and proceedings. RESULTS One third of all patients were treated for hematological cancer, followed by lung cancer. Depression was the most common psychiatric disorder. One third of all patients with hematological cancer were diagnosed with depression, followed by delirium. Inpatient psychiatric treatment and psychotherapy were most commonly recommended by the consultant psychiatrist. Furthermore, 80.2% of all patients received recommendations for medication with antidepressants. CONCLUSION Our data showed that the CLP provides an important service of detecting and initiating early and appropriate treatment for cancer patients with comorbid psychiatric disorders by directing patients to the relevant treatment procedure or facility.
