The effects of sociodemographic factors on quality of life among people aged 50 years or older are not unequivocal: comparing SF-12, WHOQOL-BREF, and WHOQOL-OLD

Role of handgrip strength in predicting the quality of life in older adults: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Quality of life (QOL) is a vital component in assessing the standard of living for seniors. Hand grip strength (HGS) is a widely used measure to diagnose muscle strength decline that often occurs due to age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. This study focuses on the HGS in predicting the QOL of older adults who are referred to retirement centers in Guilan Province.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In 2021, a cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 115 older adults who were residing in retirement centers located in Guilan Province, Northern Iran. The participants were selected using a two-stage sampling method, where three retirement centers were randomly chosen followed by convenience sampling from each center. The selected retirement centers were situated in Langrod, Sowme'eh Sara, and Rasht cities in the east, west, and center of the province, respectively. The data were collected through a demographic information questionnaire, QOL scale (CASP-19), and HGS measurement using a dynamometer.

RESULTS

Of the participants, 57.4% were male, 51.3% had middle income, and 96.5% were categorized as young elderly. The mean overall QOL score was found to be 37.026 ± 6.123, while the mean HGS level was 31.74 ± 7.45 and 18.48 ± 5.13 among males and females, respectively. There was a significant association between the level of education and QOL (P = 0.002). Moreover, there was a positive and significant correlation between HGS and QOL (r = 0.54, P = 0.001). The results of the multiple linear regression identified HGS as a predictor of QOL (Adj R2 = 0.44, βHGS = 0.79).

CONCLUSION

Given that HGS has been identified as a predictor of QOL in older adults, improving this factor through exercise can lead to enhancement in their QOL. Therefore, regular sports exercises can be recommended as a means of improving HGS and subsequently enhancing the QOL of older adults.

Exploring the effect of the structural model of active aging on the self-assessment of quality of life among older people: A cross-sectional and analytical study

BACKGROUND

Although studies have examined the relationship between variables associated with active aging and quality of life (QoL), no studies have been identified to have investigated the effect of a structural model of active aging on QoL in a representative sample of older people in the community.

OBJECTIVE

To measure the domains and facets of QoL in older people and identify the effect of the structural model of active aging on the self-assessment of QoL.

DESIGN AND SETTING

This cross-sectional analytical study included 957 older people living in urban areas. Data were collected from households using validated instruments between March and June 2018. Descriptive, confirmatory factor, and structural equation modeling analyses were performed.

RESULTS

Most older people self-rated their QoL as good (58.7%), and the highest mean scores were for the social relationships domain (70.12 ± 15.4) and the death and dying facet (75.43 ± 26.7). In contrast, the lowest mean scores were for the physical domains (64.41 ± 17.1) and social participation (67.20 ± 16.2) facets. It was found that active aging explained 50% of the variation in self-assessed QoL and directly and positively affected this outcome (λ = 0.70; P < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Active aging had a direct and positive effect on the self-assessment of QoL, indicating that the more individuals actively aged, the better the self-assessment of QoL.

The effect of depressive symptoms on quality of life and its different facets in the oldest age population: evidence from the AgeQualiDe prospective cohort study

PURPOSE

The present study aims to investigate the prospective effect of depressive symptoms on overall QoL in the oldest age group, taking into account its different facets.

METHODS

Data were derived from the multicenter prospective AgeCoDe/AgeQualiDe cohort study, including data from follow-up 7-9 and n = 580 individuals 85 years of age and older. Overall QoL and its facets were assessed using the WHOQOL-OLD instrument. The short form of the geriatric depression scale (GDS-15) was applied to assess depressive symptoms. Cognitively impaired individuals were excluded. Linear mixed-effects models were used to assess the effect of depressive symptoms on QoL.

RESULTS

Depressive symptoms were significantly associated with overall QoL and each of the different facets of WHOQOL-OLD, also after adjustment for time and sociodemographic characteristics such as age, gender, education, marital status, living situation, and cognitive status. Higher age and single as well as divorced marital status were also associated with a lower QoL.

CONCLUSION

This work provides comprehensive longitudinal results on the relationship between depressive symptoms and QoL in the oldest age population. The results underscore the relevance of tailored and targeted care planning and the development of customized interventions.

Designing, validation and evaluation of the expert system of "Healthy Menopause" and assessing its effect on the management of menopause symptoms: an exploratory mixed method study protocol

BACKGROUND

Menopause is a period of women's life that has the especial physical, psychological and social challenges. So provision of an effective, practical and affordable way for meeting women's related needs is important. In addition, women should be able to incorporate such programs into their daily work. Considering the dearth of suitable services in this regard, this study will be conducted with the aim of designing, validating and evaluating the "Healthy Menopause" expert system on the management of menopausal symptoms.

METHODS/DESIGN

A mixed methods exploratory design will be used to conduct this study in 3 phases. The first phase is a qualitative conventional content analysis study with purposes of exploring the women's experience of menopausal symptoms and extracting their needs, and collecting data about their expectations from a healthy menopause expert system.. The purposive sampling (In his phase data will be gathered through interviewing menopaused women aged 40 to 60 years old and other persons that have rich information in this regard and will be continued until data saturation. The second phase includes designing a healthy menopause expert system in this stage, the needs will be extracted from the qualitative findings along with a comprehensive literature review. The extracted needs will be again confirmed by the participants. Then, through a participatory approach (Participatory Design) using nominal group or Delphi technique the experts' opinion about the priority needs of menopaused women and related solutions will be explored based on the categories of identified needs. Such findings will be used to design a healthy menopause expert system at this stage. The third phase of study is a quantitative research in which the evaluation of the healthy menopause expert system will be done through a randomized controlled clinical trial with the aim of determining the effect of the healthy menopause expert system on the management of menopause symptoms by menopausal women themselves.

DISCUSSION

This is the first study that uses a mixed method approach for designing, validating and evaluating of the expert system "Healthy Menopause". This study will fill the research gap in the field of improving menopausal symptoms and designing a healthy menopause expert system based on the needs of the large group of menopause women. We hope that by applying this expert system, the menopausal women be empowered to management and improving their health with an easy and affordable manner.

Quality of life in south-eastern Australia: normative values for the WHOQOL-BREF in a population-based sample of adults

OBJECTIVES

The abbreviated World Health Organisation Quality of Life tool (WHOQOL-BREF) is a short-form quality of life (QoL) assessment commonly used worldwide in both healthy and ill populations. Normative data for the Australian general population are limited. The objective of this study was to present normative data for the WHOQOL-BREF based on a general population sample. A secondary aim was to explore sociodemographic factors related to QoL.

DESIGN

Population-based cross-sectional study.

PARTICIPANTS

929 men and 830 women aged 24-94 years participating in the Geelong Osteoporosis Study.

OUTCOME MEASURES

The 26-item WHOQOL-BREF.

RESULTS

Means and SD for each domain are presented by age group and sex. Percentile scores were also generated. Mean scores for WHOQOL-BREF domains were 74.52 (SD=16.22) for physical health, 72.07 (SD=15.35) for psychological, 72.87 (SD=18.78) for social relationships and 79.68 (SD=12.55) for environment. We identified significant associations between sociodemographic factors and WHOQOL-BREF domains. Notably, being married or in a relationship was associated with increased odds for high QoL across all four WHOQOL-BREF domains: physical health (women OR 2.46, 95% CI 1.36 to 4.44, p=0.003), psychological (men OR 2.07, 95% CI: 1.20 to 3.55, p=0.009; women OR 2.15, 95% CI 1.21 to 3.81, p=0.009), social relationships (men OR 2.28, 95% CI 1.29 to 4.04, p=0.005; women OR 2.77, 95% CI 1.42 to 5.41, p=0.003) and environment (women OR 2.07, 95% CI 1.13 to 3.80, p=0.019).

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides population norms for the WHOQOL-BREF based on a representative sample of Australian adults. Our results will be useful to researchers and clinicians who can use these data as a reference point for interpreting WHOQOL-BREF scores.

Changes in perceived ageism during the COVID-19 pandemic: impact on quality of life and mental well-being among Dutch adults aged 55 and older

Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic brought ageism to the forefront of public discourse. Negative ageism incurs more negative self-perceptions of aging, which affects physical and mental functioning. Whether negative ageism as perceived and experienced by older adults has worsened as the pandemic lingered, and how such changes impact quality of life (QoL) and mental well-being (MWB), remain urgent questions.Method: In a sample of adults aged 55 or older (n = 500), we aimed to address this by administering the Perceived Ageism Questionnaire twice during the pandemic (T1: between October 2020 and May 2021; T2: on average 45 wk after T1).Results: Higher levels of perceived negative ageism were associated with lower QoL and MWB, at least partially through its unfavorable effects on self-perceptions of aging, even after controlling for ageism experiences in the preceding year (at T2, corrected for T1). Furthermore, we found that perceived negative ageism increased from T1 to T2, which had negative implications for QoL/MWB. Opposite effects were found for perceived positive ageism, although less consistently.Conclusion: These patterns reveal that ageism as perceived and experienced by adults of 55 or older became stronger and more negative throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, which had detrimental implications for individuals' QoL and MWB. These disconcerting findings emphasize the importance of combatting negative ageism in our society.

The effects of dynamic neuromuscular stabilization approach on clinical outcomes in older patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain: a randomized, controlled clinical trial

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to examine the effects of Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) approach in older patients with chronic non-specific low back pain (CNSLBP).

METHODS

A total of 72 participants with CNSLBP were assigned to either the experimental group (n = 36) or control group (n = 36) in this randomized study. A conventional physiotherapy program was administered to the participants in the control group for 3 days per week for a total of 6 weeks. In addition to the conventional program, DNS exercise protocol was performed for 3 days per week for 6 weeks for the participants in the experimental group. While quality of movements and exercise capacity were our primary outcomes, functional balance and quality of life constituted our secondary outcomes. The participants were assessed both at baseline and post-treatment.

RESULTS

The improvement in a deep squat, in-line lunge, hurdle step, shoulder flexibility, rotary trunk stability, total Functional Movement Screening score, and Timed-up and Go Test score was greater in the experimental group (p<.05). The improvement was similar in both groups in terms of the rest of outcome measures.

DISCUSSION

This study demonstrated the effectiveness of the DNS approach on some functional movement patterns and functional balance performance in older patients with CNSLBP.

The remission rate, metabolic changes, and quality of life assessment among patients with type 2 diabetes post-bariatric surgery in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: A cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVES

To assess the remission rate, metabolic changes, and quality of life after bariatric surgery among Saudi patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM).

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2 main centers in the Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The study included patients with T2DM who underwent either laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery from 2014 to 2018. The remission rate was defined based on the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. Quality of life was assessed using the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL)-BREF.

RESULTS

A total of 232 patients were included with a mean age of 44.3 ± 10.3 years. 93.4% of the patients had LSG, while only 6.6% had RYGB surgery. Among patients who underwent either LSG or RYGB surgery, there was a significant improvement in metabolic and glycemic markers compared to the baseline. According to the ADA criteria, 48.5% of the patients had complete remission, while 18.9% had partial remission. Overall, 7% of the patients met the IDF optimization criteria, while 5.7% met the IDF improvement criteria. The mean score for all the QOL domains exceeded 63 ± 13, with the environmental and physical health domains having the highest scores.

CONCLUSION

Among Saudi patients, bariatric surgery was associated with high remission rates and a better quality of life.

Trends in Health Communication: Social Media Needs and Quality of Life among Older Adults in Malaysia

BACKGROUND

While social media continues to dominate, social media platforms have become powerful health communication tools for older users. However, fulfilling their social media needs can be both detrimental and beneficial to their quality of life (QoL). This study assessed social media needs as they relate to QoL among older adults in Malaysia.

METHODS

We conducted a cross-sectional study and adopted convenience sampling to recruit participants. The participants were required to self-report their sociodemographic profile, social media use and needs, and QoL. Social media use and needs were assessed using the Social Networking Sites Uses and Needs (SNSUN) scale, and QoL was assessed using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Multiple linear regression was performed to identify the predictors of QoL.

RESULTS

The findings revealed that the fulfilment of social integrative needs was the strongest predictor of higher QoL in all domains. However, those using social media for their affective needs demonstrated lower psychological health quality.

CONCLUSIONS

Fulfilling social integrative needs is the key to improving the QoL among older adults. The continuous development of age-friendly applications is essential to keep up with constantly changing social media trends and bridge the gap of social media inequalities. More importantly, it would enable older adults to utilize social media to its fullest potential and enjoy a higher QoL through accessible health communication tools.

Social and Health Determinants of Quality of Life of Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Malaysia

Quality of life (QOL) of older adults is a complex issue that requires an understanding of the intersection between socioeconomic and health factors. A poor quality of life (QOL) is frequently reported as sub-optimal among older adults whereby concerted and collective actions are required through an evidence-based approach. Hence, this cross-sectional study aims to determine the social and health predictors of the QOL of a community-dwelling older adult Malaysian population through a quantitative household survey using multi-stage sampling. A total of 698 respondents aged 60 years old and older were recruited and the majority of them had a good quality of life. Risk of depression, disability, living with stroke, low household income, and lack of social network were identified as the predictors of a poor QOL among the community-dwelling older Malaysians. The identified predictors for QOL provided a list of priorities for the development of policies, strategies, programmes, and interventions to enhance the QOL of the community-dwelling older Malaysians. Multisectoral approaches, especially collective efforts from both social and health sectors, are required to address the complexities of the ageing issues.

Evaluation of quality of life in the elderly who have fallen

Background/Aim: Approximately 30% of older adults fall at least once per year; consequently, falls are a significant public health concern in the elderly. The most common outcomes are fractures, immobility, high morbidity, and mortality rates. In recent years, quality of life (QoL) is used as a criterion to guide social policies for the elderly. The high prevalence of falls can have serious consequences on the QoL of older people, resulting in prolonged hospitalization, institutionalization, need for care, social isolation, anxiety, and depression. Therefore, it is essential to understand the effect of falls on QoL and influencing factors. In light of this study’s results, it is intended to provide recommendations for social policy that will protect the elderly from falls and maintain their high QoL. This study aimed to determine the QoL and the factors affecting the elderly who have fallen. Methods: The research was a cross-sectional study. The study sample consisted of 90 elderly individuals who applied to the hospital due to falls. The inclusion criteria were being 65 years of age or older, applying to the hospital's emergency department, orthopedic or orthopedic surgery clinic due to a fall, not having passed 6 months from the date of discharge, and agreeing to participate in the study voluntarily. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews in January–June 2021 using the purposive sampling method. The Elderly Introduction Form was used to obtain sociodemographic data of the participants, as well as data on falls and their experiences after falls. The Quality of Life Scale for the Elderly was used to determine QoL. The student’s t-test was used to compare two categorical variables. ANOVA was used for more than two variables, and logistic regression analysis was also applied. Results: QoL levels were classified as poor, fair, and good, and 58.9% of the participants were found to have a fair QoL. In addition, according to the scale’s total score average of 3.17 (0.473), the general quality of life was found to be fair for all participants. According to the t-test and ANOVA results, the QoL was higher for those with higher education levels and those living with their spouses (P˂0.05). The QoL was low in those who had fractures, had surgery, were hospitalized for more than 4 days, and had chronic diseases (P˂0.05). In the regression analysis model, age, economic status, and the number of drugs used were effective on QoL. Conclusion: The quality of life was poor in the elderly who experienced fractures and were hospitalized. Balance-enhancing exercises in the elderly can prevent falls and associated complications. Low education level, chronic illness, and drug use reduced the quality of life. For education, literacy courses and lifelong learning programs can be applied to the elderly. For diseases, healthy aging policies can be implemented.

Quality of life and psychosocial outcomes of adults who were pediatric solid organ transplant recipients: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

The number of pediatric SOT recipients surviving into adulthood is increasing. Thus, understanding their psychosocial and QoL outcomes is important. We conducted a systematic review to collate existing literature examining QoL outcomes (physical functioning, psychological functioning, social functioning), as well as risk and protective factors associated with QoL, among adults who underwent SOT during childhood.

METHODS

A systematic search of five databases, from inception to January 6, 2021, was conducted to identify articles that reported on QoL outcomes for adults (≥18-year of age) who received a SOT during childhood (<19-year of age).

RESULTS

Twenty-five articles met inclusion criteria. Studies examined QoL across a range of SOT populations (liver, kidney, heart). QoL and psychosocial outcomes were variable; however, the majority of studies indicated QoL in this population to be similar to the general population, or at least similar to other chronic illness groups, with the exception of physical and social functioning. Factors related to a more optimal medical course, younger age at transplant and follow-up, and positive psychosocial functioning, were found to be predictive of better QoL outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS

While several studies indicated QoL to be similar to the general population, the literature is limited in both quantity and quality. No study employed prospective, longitudinal methodologies to systematically evaluate QoL over time and few studies utilized normative-based measures of QoL. Furthermore, several SOT groups were under-represented in the literature (e.g., lung, intestine, multi-visceral). Nonetheless, findings have implications for intervention and clinical decision-making.

Multivariate analysis of independent determinants of ADL/IADL and quality of life in the elderly

BACKGROUND

This study evaluated the determinants of disability and quality of life in elderly people who participated at the multi-centred RubiN project (Regional ununterbrochen betreut im Netz) in Germany.

METHODS

Baseline data of the subjects aged 70 years and older of the RubiN project were used and only subjects with complete data sets were considered for the ensuing analysis (complete case analysis (CCA)). Disability was examined using the concepts of ADL (activities of daily living) and IADL (instrumental activities of daily living). Subjects exhibiting one or more deficiencies in ADL respectively IADL were considered as ADL respectively IADL disabled. Quality of life was assessed using the WHOQOL-BREF and the WHOQOL-OLD. Applying multivariate analysis, sociodemographic factors, psychosocial characteristics as well as the functional, nutritional and cognitive status were explored as potential determinants of disability and quality of life in the elderly.

RESULTS

One thousand three hundred seventy-five subjects from the RubiN project exhibited data completeness regarding baseline data. ADL and IADL disability were both associated with the respective other construct of disability, sex, a reduced cognitive and functional status as well as domains of the WHOQOL-BREF. Furthermore, ADL disability was related to social participation, while IADL disability was linked to age, education and social support. Sex, ADL and IADL disability, income, social support and social participation as well as the functional status were predictors of the domain 'Physical Health' (WHOQOL-BREF). The facet 'Social Participation' (WHOQOL-OLD) was affected by both ADL and IADL disability, income, social participation, the nutritional and also the functional status.

CONCLUSIONS

Several potential determinants of disability and quality of life were identified and confirmed in this study. Attention should be drawn to prevention schemes as many of these determinants appear to be at least partly modifiable.

Assessing Quality of Life with Community Dwelling Elderly Adults: A Mass Survey in Taiwan

BACKGROUND

With the growing life expectancy for older adults, this study aims to examine the correlation among sociodemographic characteristics and the combined effect of QoL-related domains including physical health, psychological health, social relationships, and environmental factors with the overall QoL level of older adults in Taiwan.

METHODS

The WHOQOL-BREF Taiwanese Version questionnaire was adopted and conducted using a randomized telephone interview system from community household elders. In total, 1078 participants aged 65 years and older were recruited. A multiple regression model was used to examine the statistical significance between the overall QoL score as the dependent variable and the sociodemographic characteristics, and 26 items of QoL-related questionnaires as the independent variables.

RESULTS

Categories including female, aged 85 years and above, higher education level, and better financial situation had significantly higher overall QoL level. Except the physical health domain and six items, the correlations among all other domains and their including items of questionnaires with overall QoL level were significant.

CONCLUSION

The Taiwanese WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire can be used to examine the overall QoL level of elders in Taiwan. Nevertheless, the robust systems of universal health care and long-term care in Taiwan may have led to the no significance of the six items.

Exploring the Relationships of Financial Literacy and Financial Behaviour with Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) among the Low-Income Working Population in Malaysia during the COVID-19 Pandemic

This cross-sectional study examined the relationships of financial literacy (FL) and financial behaviour (FB) with health-related quality of life (HRQOL) during the COVID-19 pandemic among low-income working population (20-60 years old) in Malaysia. A self-administered questionnaire survey was used with HRQOL data were gathered using the EuroQol 5-Dimension 5-Level (EQ-5D-5L) tool. A generalised linear model was employed to examine the hypothesised relationships between the constructs. From 1186 respondents, the majority were employed (73.9%), had a monthly household income of less than RM 2500 (74.5%), and did not have any chronic medical conditions (74.5%). The mean (SD) values of FL, FB, and EQ-5D-5L were 5.95 (1.48), 22.08 (4.79), and 0.96 (0.10), respectively. The results of the adjusted model revealed lower age group, Malay ethnicity, Indian ethnicity, and increased FB score as significant determinants of higher EQ-5D-5L scores. With the addition of the chronic medical condition factor into the saturated model, the lower age group, ethnicity, and no chronic medical condition were significant determinants of higher HRQOL. The effects of FB on QOL were confounded by chronic diseases, implying that interventions that focus on improving FB for those with chronic medical condition may help to improve the QOL among the low-income working population.

The relationship between body image and quality of life in postmenopausal women: A correlational cross-sectional study

The relationship between body image (BI) and quality of life (QoL) among postmenopausal women was assessed in this study. This correlational cross-sectional study was conducted on 320 postmenopausal women in Tehran-Iran. The subjects were selected using a multistage sampling method. Data was collected using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire, the Fisher's body image questionnaire, and a socio-demographic questionnaire. Total score and score of all domains of QoL had a significant positive correlation with total score and score of all dimensions of BI and BI was a predictor of QoL (p < 0.001). Therefore, women health policies should concentrate on BI improvement for promoting QoL during menopause.

Chronic diseases and emotional disorders are associated with low perception of quality of life in food insecurity/security

Understanding individual perception of Quality of Life (QoL) can help combat social and health inequalities. We aimed to identify factors associated with Low Perceived Quality of Life (LPQoL) in 295 adults and older adults with food security and food insecurity, in the city of Natal, Brazil. A cross-sectional study was conducted from June to December 2019, with collection of data on socioeconomic demographic status, lifestyle information, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and risk factors, emotional disorders, food (in) security and quality of life. To assess food insecurity, the Brazilian Scale of Food Insecurity—EBIA was used, and the WHOQOL-Bref questionnaire was used to assess quality of life. Poisson's Regression was used to verify associations between variables and LPQoL, stratifying the sample into food secure (FS) and food insecure (FI) groups. In the FI group, being overweight, older adult, having no partner, drinking alcoholic beverages twice a week or more, and not having daily availability of water were associated with LPQoL, and in the FS group, having diabetes, monthly family income in the 1st and 2nd tertiles, and never having studied was associated with LPQoL. Reporting emotional disorders and sleeping &lt; 7 h/day were associated with LPQoL in both FI and FS groups. LPQoL was associated with the occurrence of NCDs and risk factors, and emotional disorders, regardless of the food security measure. However, the lack of adequate access to water highlights the social vulnerability of the FI group.

The Impact of Physical Activity Levels and Functional Fitness Status on the Quality of Life Perceived by Older Adults Living in Rural and Urban Areas: The Portuguese Inland Case

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is influenced by several factors, such as living place, physical activity (PA), and functional fitness levels. Evidence shows that functional fitness and PA levels are strongly associated with positive HRQoL, especially in the older population. However, the impact of the living place has not been investigated as an influencing variable in this context. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between the HRQoL, PA, and functional fitness of older adults living in rural and urban areas of Portugal. A cross-sectional study was performed with community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and over (n = 261) living in the city of Guarda. The participants were assessed for sociodemographic, anthropometric, clinical health, HRQoL, PA levels, and functional fitness status. The results showed that rural residents presented higher scores of HRQoL and functional fitness than older individuals living in urban areas. Regression models showed that functional fitness variables influence the HRQoL overall score and mental and physical subcomponents of HRQoL, regardless of the living place. In contrast, PA levels only influenced the HRQoL score in rural residents. The findings suggest that intervention programs to improve the physical health, quality of life, and well-being of the older population need to consider the country’s different geographical areas.

Role of Participation in Activities and Perceived Accessibility on Quality of Life among Nondisabled Older Adults and Those with Disabilities in Israel during COVID-19

During the COVID-19 pandemic, quality of life (QoL) was reduced among many groups, including Israeli older adults. This study investigated perceived QoL, perceived accessibility of the living environment, and participation in activities among nondisabled older adults and those with disabilities in the community. It also examined whether the perceived accessibility's effect on QoL occurs directly and/or indirectly via mediators of participation in community activities. A voluntary and anonymous survey was administered from February to May 2021 to 495 participants aged 60 and older. Respondents completed three questionnaires: WHOQOL-BREF, Community Integration Questionnaire-Revised (CIQ-R), and Perceived Accessibility of Living Environment (PALE). The main finding was that participation in activities in the community had a direct positive impact on QoL. Perceived accessibility of the living environment also had indirect positive effects on QoL through participation in activities in the community, for those without disabilities but, interestingly, not for those with disabilities. Hierarchal linear regressions revealed that participation in activities explained 53.3% of the variance for both groups while perceived accessibility added 1.1% for the nondisabled. We conclude that accessibility of living environment is a good indicator of positively perceived QoL through participation in various activities in the community for nondisabled older adults. This may be especially important during a pandemic.

Quality of life of older people in nursing homes in China–evaluation and application of the Chinese version of the life satisfaction questionnaire

Background

Chinese and global populations are aging, and more older people are living in nursing homes in China. However, there is a lack of research measuring nursing home residents’ quality of life (QOL), and especially associations with nursing home types (publicly versus privately run). Therefore, this study aimed to determine the construct validity and internal consistency of the Chinese version of the life satisfaction questionnaire (LSQ-Chinese) and determine the associations between nursing home types (publicly versus privately run), residents’ sociodemographic characteristics, and their QOL.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey measuring QOL among older people living in nursing homes was conducted (n = 419). Confirmatory factor analysis and Cronbach’s alpha were used to assess the construct validity and reliability of the LSQ-Chinese. In addition, multivariate regression analysis was used to examine these associations.

Results

Confirmatory factor analysis indicated acceptable goodness-of-fit statistics for the seven-factor LSQ solution. All factors and the total scale had good internal consistency, with Cronbach’s alpha values > 0.70. The two factors with the highest QOL scores (higher scores indicate a more desirable state) were “physical symptoms” and “socioeconomic situation,” and those with the lowest QOL scores were “quality of close-friend relationships” and “quality of daily activities fun”. Residents living in privately run nursing homes had higher LSQ scores overall and for all factors except “physical symptoms” and “sickness impact” compared with publicly run nursing homes. Multivariate analyses indicated that marital status, number of chronic diseases, education level, main source of income, and nursing home type significantly contributed to the variance in the total LSQ scores. The associated sociodemographic variables differed between the factors, and the variable publicly versus privately run was significant for five of the seven factors.

Conclusions

The LSQ is a suitable instrument for measuring the QOL of Chinese nursing home residents. The total LSQ score was higher among residents in privately run nursing homes than in publicly run ones. According to residents’ needs, staff should work for person-centered activities, and facilitate residents’ social interactions with friends, as both these aspects were scored relatively low.

Correlation between functional disability and quality of life among rural elderly in Anhui province, China: a cross-sectional study

Objective

We aimed to explore the correlation between functional disability and quality of life (QoL). And exploring the interaction of functional disability, basic demographic characteristics and health-related information on QoL among the rural elderly in Anhui Province.

Methods

This study used multi-stage stratified cluster sampling in rural Anhui Province from January to July 2018 to conduct a cross-sectional survey of older adults who met the inclusion criteria. The Five-Dimensional European Quality Of Health Scale (EQ-5D) and the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS2.0) scale were used to evaluate the QoL and functional disability, and the basic demographic characteristics of the survey subjects were also collected. Using binary logistic and Classification and regression tree model (CART) models to analyze the data, explore the relationship between functional disability and QoL in the elderly.

Results

A total of 3491 older adults were included in the survey, and 3336 completed the entire survey, with an effective response rate of 95.56%. After adjusting for covariables, those who had limited in dimension of mobility (AOR=2.243, 95%CI: 1.743-2.885), getting along (AOR=1.615, 95%CI: 1.173-2.226), life activities (AOR=2.494, 95%CI:1.928-3.226), and social participation (AOR=2.218, 95%CI: 1.656-2.971) had a lower QoL. However, the dimension of cognition (AOR=0.477, 95%CI: 0.372-0.613) is a protective factor for QoL. Additionally, we also observe that 96.3% of those who were unemployed and limited in both mobility and life activities dimensions had a lower QoL, but among those who were robust in both mobility and social participation dimensions and not suffer from chronic diseases, 56.3% had a higher QoL.

Conclusions

Our findings indicate that special attention should be paid to the elderly who are unemployed, have limited in cognition, getting along, social participation, mobility, life activities and cognition robust to improve their QoL. This research is of great significance for formulating targeted strategies and measures to improve the QoL for rural elderly.

Factors Affecting Quality of Life among Older Adults with Hypertension in Urban and Rural Areas in Thailand: A Cross-Sectional Study

This study explored factors affecting quality of life in older adults with hypertension by comparing those living in urban and rural areas. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 420 older adults living in urban and rural areas in Thailand. Data were collected using the WHOQOL-OLD and Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile-II tools, which measured quality of life and health-promoting behaviors among the participants. Older adults in urban areas had higher quality of life scores than those in rural locations. Health-promoting behaviors significantly predicted higher quality of life for all residents. A high perceived health status predicted increase of quality of life in urban residents, whereas the presence of comorbidity effects decreased quality of life. A longer hypertension duration predicted higher quality of life in rural residents. These findings suggest that healthy behaviors and self-management interventions are critical to improve quality of life in older Thai adults with hypertension.

Association of Grip Strength with Quality of Life in the Chinese Oldest Old

Emerging studies have suggested an association between grip strength and health-related quality of life (QOL). However, evidence for which specific domains of QOL are associated with grip strength remains limited and inconsistent. Particularly, such evidence is scarce in the oldest old, who constitute one of the most vulnerable populations. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the association between grip strength and overall QOL as well as specific domains in the oldest old. It included 400 community-dwelling older adults aged 80 years or older from Shanghai, China. QOL was assessed using the WHO Quality of Life of Older Adults instrument, and grip strength was measured using a digital spring-type dynamometer. On average, the overall QOL score was 54.68 (SD = 12.05). Estimates of risk-adjusted linear regressions indicated that higher grip strength was associated with better overall QOL (β = 4.40, p < 0.001) as well as the domains of autonomy (β = 6.74, p < 0.001); fulfillment with past, present, and future activities and achievements (β = 3.52, p = 0.004); and satisfaction with social participation (β = 6.72, p < 0.001). Our findings highlight the importance of maintaining or improving grip strength in delaying or reducing the decline in QOL among the community-dwelling oldest old. Also noteworthy is that the associations between grip strength and specific domains of QOL in the oldest old vary.

Elderly people's quality of life in rural areas of Turkey and its relationship with loneliness and sociodemographic characteristics

BACKGROUND

The aim of the present study was to examine the relationships between loneliness, quality of life and the factors that may be related to the quality of life in individuals ≥65 years old living in rural areas of Turkey.

METHODS

The World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument Older Adults Module (WHOQOL OLD) and Loneliness Scale for the Elderly (LSE) was administered to 427 elderly participants. Multiple linear regression was used to determine the variables that affected QOL.

RESULTS

The results of the multivariate linear regression analyses indicated that gender, marital status, education level, family income status, general health condition, living arrangement, and loneliness level for subdomains were within the predictors. Loneliness level had the strongest negative impact on the four WHOQOL OLD subdomains and total WHOQOL OLD score. It was the most important predictor for autonomy, past present future activities, social participation, death-and-dying, and intimacy subdomains and for the total QOL.

CONCLUSIONS

Remarkably, a sense of loneliness in the elderly was determined to be the most important factor for predicting their QOL. Loneliness should be considered in attempts to improve QOL for the elderly, interventions to reduce loneliness should specifically target this group, and activities with the potential to increase QOL should be encouraged.

Correlation between vocal handicap and quality of life of popular singers

PURPOSE

To evaluate the correlation between vocal handicap index and the quality of life of popular singers.

METHODS

Transversal study. The data was collected through personal interviews and the use of the following instruments: World Health Organization Quality of Life-bref (WHOQOL-bref), the Modern Singing Handicap Index (MSHI) and a questionnaire about the singer's sociodemographic profiles and their self-perceived complaints. The level of significance was 5% (p <0.05). A descriptive analysis of the WHOQOL-bref and the IDCM scores was done using absolute and relative frequencies, mean and standard deviation. Quantitative variables were tested with Komolgorov-Smirnov, using non-parametric tests Kruskal Wallis and U Mann-Whitney. Correlation between the WHOQOL-bref and MSHI instruments was made with Spearman's Correlation Test. Reliability of the instruments tested by Cronbach's Alpha test.

RESULTS

Sample of 206 popular singers who were mostly man, single, with higher education or postgraduate and income of up to six minimum wages a month. Majority of them had high scores in WHOQOL-bref, indicating self-perception of good quality of life. Most singers report vocal complaints. The ones without vocal complaints showed self-perception of a better quality of life and lower vocal handicap with meaningful statistical significance in all WHOQOL-bref domains and MSHI subscales. Singers over 40 years old and with higher incomes showed better perception of their quality of life and lower vocal handicap. There was negative or weak correlation between the MSHI and the WHOQOL-bref.

CONCLUSION

Better quality of life had correlation among the group with lower vocal handicap.

Health-Related Quality of Life and Physical Activity in a Community Setting

This article analyses how physical activity reinforces each of the dimensions (mental, physical, social, etc.) of the health-related quality of life concept. To that end, we determined whether this relationship is moderated by educational level and area of residence. The empirical part was based on data obtained from a cross-sectional survey carried out in the Casablanca neighbourhood (Zaragoza, Spain). The sample comprised 1083 participants aged between 25 and 84 years residing in the three residential areas of this neighbourhood: Viñedo Viejo, Las Nieves and Fuentes Claras. These three areas exhibit significant socio-economic differences in their population. The self-reported questionnaire included the following key information for this study: socio-economic characteristics (sex, age, educational level and area of residence) and health-related quality of life (WHOQOL-Brief: mental health, physical health, social relations and environment). The main results obtained from the descriptive statistics and regression systems were added. Playing a sport or undertaking some physical activity brings many health benefits, both physical and mental. The educational level and area of residence affect this relationship, such that the effects of physical activity are greater for those residents of Casablanca who have a higher educational level and/or live in more favoured areas of this neighbourhood. The results have also been discussed by sex and age group. Investing in innovative programmes in educational institutions and communities to acquire healthy habits and behaviour patterns that take into account socioeconomic differences in the population would be an advisable public health strategy.

Benefits of STRENOLD Program on Health-Related Quality of Life in Adults Aged 60 Years or Older. In Common Sport Study

Background: The proportion of older adults is increasing worldwide and, with it, the physical inactivity common to this age group. Therefore, the promotion of active aging is a strategic factor in health policies for older people. The aim of this study was to identify the benefits and viability of the strength training program (STRENOLD) in health-related quality of life in adults over 60. Methods: A controlled experimental study was carried out with a sample of 181 people over 60 years old from different European countries belonging to the European project IN COMMON SPORTS. A pair work strength program was administered (STRENOLD) over a period of 24 months, consisting of two single sessions per week. Their health status was evaluated (EQ-5D-5L) before and after the interventions. Results: The adherence rate was over 89% and the tolerability rate over 100% in all participating countries. Significant improvements in the participants’ health were demonstrated in the areas of mobility, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression. Conclusions: The regular practice of physical exercise, through the partnered STRENOLD strength program, has benefits on mobility, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression, in short, health benefits for older adults.

The prediction of mortality by quality of life assessed with the WHOQOL-BREF: a longitudinal analysis at the domain and item levels using a seven-year follow-up period

PURPOSE

To determine the predictive value of quality of life for mortality at the domain and item levels.

METHODS

This longitudinal study was carried out in a sample of 479 Dutch people aged 75 years or older living independently, using a follow-up of 7 years. Participants completed a self-report questionnaire. Quality of life was assessed with the WHOQOL-BREF, including four domains: physical health, psychological, social relationships, and environment. The municipality of Roosendaal (a town in the Netherlands) indicated the dates of death of the individuals.

RESULTS

Based on mean, all quality of life domains predicted mortality adjusted for gender, age, marital status, education, and income. The hazard ratios ranged from 0.811 (psychological) to 0.933 (social relationships). The areas under the curve (AUCs) of the four domains were 0.730 (physical health), 0.723 (psychological), 0.693 (social relationships), and 0.700 (environment). In all quality of life domains, at least one item predicted mortality (adjusted).

CONCLUSION

Our study showed that all four quality of life domains belonging to the WHOQOL-BREF predict mortality in a sample of Dutch community-dwelling older people using a follow-up period of 7 years. Two AUCs were above threshold (psychological, physical health). The findings offer health care and welfare professionals evidence for conducting interventions to reduce the risk of premature death.

Effect of regular kratom (Mitragyna speciosa Korth.) use on quality of life of people who use kratom

Background: Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa Korth.) is a traditional folk remedy used in Southeast Asia and is known to have a significant opioid-like effect. However, it is unknown whether kratom consumption can impair quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to examine the QoL of people who use kratom by comparing it with that of healthy non-kratom using controls and to determine the association between patterns of kratom use and QoL among people who use kratom. Methods: 200 respondents (100 subjects who use kratom and 100 healthy controls) were recruited for this cross-sectional study. The World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF was administered to all the respondents to assess QoL, while the Kratom Dependence Scale (KDS) was used to assess the severity of kratom dependence among the subjects who use kratom. Results: The physical health, psychological, and environment QoL scores of the subjects who use kratom were significantly lower than those of the healthy controls. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed greater KDS score and longer duration of kratom use were significant predictors of physical health QoL, while only greater KDS score significantly predicted psychological and environment QoL scores. Conclusion: Prolonged kratom use and kratom dependence may negatively impact the QoL of people who use kratom, hence kratom addiction has to be treated adequately.

Experience and Perceptions of Changes in the Living Environment by Older People Losing Their Autonomy: A Qualitative Study in the Caribbean

Rationale

Although the literature recognizes the importance of older individuals’ subjective perceptions about their living environments, past studies on the subject have been primarily restricted to nursing home settings.

Objective

This study aimed to better understand the experiences, perceptions, coping mechanisms, and needs of older people living in Martinique who had to modify their living environment because of a decline of autonomy.

Design

Qualitative study using content analysis.

Methods

Semi-structured one-on-one interviews were conducted with older people living in three different types of environment i) at home with professional support, ii) in a foster care family, iii) in a nursing home. Interviews were conducted until data saturation was reached. A conventional content analysis approach was used.

Results

Thirty-four participants were interviewed. Subjects perceived ageing as a factor leading to changes in their living environment. However, they did not spontaneously evoke their functional/structural impairments nor their activity limitations as if the change of living environment could reduce the perceived loss of autonomy by maintaining an acceptable participation. Participants mostly experienced change as both inevitable and as a relief as it took them out of isolation and domestic hardship. This reaction was somewhat facilitated by spiritual beliefs as the changes were interpreted as the will of spiritual forces. Family and social relationships appeared to be more important determinants of participants’ perception of changes in living environment than was health status. We found differences between the three groups regarding familial relationship, fear of death, acceptance of change, and unmet needs. Unmet needs were particularly expressed by those living in foster care. The concept of “feeling at home”, which emerged as essential for all participants, was lacking in foster care families.

Conclusion

Perceived autonomy, including not only functional/structural impairments, but also, social interactions, should be carefully considered when developing support services for older individuals.

Sense of Coherence and Quality of Life in Patients Treated with Antivitamin K Oral Anticoagulants: A Cross-Sectional Study

The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between the participants’ self-reported quality of life and their sense of coherence in a sample (n = 85) of patients on treatment with oral antivitamin K anticoagulants. A cross-sectional design was used. The measurement instruments included a questionnaire on sociodemographic variables, the Spanish version of the Abbreviated World Health Organization Quality of Life questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF), an oral-anticoagulant-treatment-specific quality-of-life questionnaire, and the sense-of-coherence (SOC) scale. We analyzed the correlations between the participants’ characteristics and the results from the quality-of-life and SOC scales. Age, level of education, employment status, living arrangement, and treatment length were the determinants of the quality of life in people treated with oral anticoagulants. We found a significant association between the four domains of the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire and general treatment satisfaction (p < 0.01); no significant correlations were found between the SOC subscales and the oral-anticoagulant-treatment-specific quality of life in our sample. Women had a worse level of self-management than men. Nursing interventions should be tailored to the needs of the populations on treatment with oral anticoagulants in order to facilitate a higher level of self-management.

Health-related quality of life in elderly, multimorbid individuals with and without depression and/or mild cognitive impairment using a telemonitoring application

PURPOSE

Multimorbidity leads to decreasing health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Telemedicine may help to improve HRQoL. The present study was conducted to show (I) differences in HRQoL and changes in HRQoL over time in elderly, multimorbid individuals with and without depression and/or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) using a telemonitoring application (TMA) and (II) associations between engagement with measurements by study participants using a TMA and changes in their HRQoL.

METHODS

The present feasibility study was part of a longitudinal intervention study. Recruited general practitioners (GPs) enrolled individuals and assigned them to risk groups according to absence/presence of depression and/or MCI. Depression was assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), MCI using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and HRQoL using the SF-12. The TMA consisted of tablets, software, and measuring devices. Measured vital data were transferred to a care and case manager for monitoring and possible intervention.

RESULTS

Nine GPs recruited 177 individuals, 97 of whom were included in the HRQoL analysis. Significantly lower physical and mental component summary (PCS/MCS) scores were revealed in study participants with depression, and with both depression and MCI, compared to participants with no mental disorders. PCS scores did not differ between study dates, but MCS scores had significantly increased over time. Participants' engagement with measurements was significantly associated with an increased MCS score, but not with the PCS score.

DISCUSSION

Depression and/or MCI are negatively associated with the HRQoL of elderly, multimorbid people using a TMA. Engagement of individuals with vital data measurements via a TMA may increase their mental HRQoL. Mentally impaired people should be closely involved as co-designers and experts in development processes of TMAs to benefit from tailored solutions. An individual's increased mental HRQoL can be a decisive factor in their engagement with a GP treatment regimen and telemonitoring processes.

Income Inequality in Quality of Life among Rural Communities in Malaysia: A Case for Immediate Policy Consideration

Quality of life (QOL) is a proxy of health and social well-being. Hence, it is vital to assess QOL as it informs the strategies of policymakers to enhance the living conditions in communities. Rural areas in emerging economies are underserved in terms of modern facilities and technologies, which impact QOL. To address this, this study investigated whether income played a role in the QOL of rural residents within emerging economies using a large survey of Malaysian adults above 18 years old. The study extracted data from a sample of 18,607 respondents of a health and demographic surveillance system survey. A generalized linear model was used to estimate the impact of three income groups, the bottom 40%, middle 40% and top 20%, on perceived QOL, controlling for sociodemographic, chronic disease co-morbidities and mental health status. Results of the study showed a statistically significant association between income and the physical, psychological, social and environmental QOL domains. Using the bottom 40% as a reference category, the middle 40% and top 20% income groups showed a significant and positive association across the four domains of QOL. Hence, intervention programs are necessary to escalate the income levels of rural communities, especially the bottom 40%, to uplift perceived QOL among rural residents.

Validity and reliability of the Korean version of the world health organization quality of life instrument-older adults module

The World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument-Older Adults Module (WHOQOL-OLD) is a scale that measures quality of life (QoL) based on the characteristics of older adults. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the WHOQOL-OLD. It was administered to 273 older adults by convenience sampling in Jeonbuk, South Korea. The six-factor model was validated by confirmatory factor analysis (χ²=462.52 [p<.001], normed χ²=1.95, comparative fit index=0.94, Tucker-Lewis index=0.92, standardized root mean residual=0.06, root mean square error of approximation=0.059). Concurrent validity was demonstrated with the WHOQOL-BREF (r = 00.708), SF-12 (r = 0.508) and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (r=-0.499). In addition, the Korean version of the WHOQOL-OLD was evaluated for known group validity. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the total scale was 0.897. The Korean version of the WHOQOL-OLD showed acceptable validity and reliability for measuring QoL in older Korean adults.

Assessment of quality of life among elderly in urban and peri-urban areas, Yangon Region, Myanmar

BACKGROUND

In the context of an aging population, quality of life (QOL) is an important consideration for the well-being of the elderly. However, there is limited information on the QOL of the elderly in Myanmar. This study aimed to explore the risk factors for low QOL among the elderly in urban and peri-urban areas of the Yangon Region, Myanmar.

METHODS

A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted among the elderly aged 60 years or older in two urban and two peri-urban townships in the Yangon Region from July to September 2019. A multi-stage sampling method was used to recruit study participants using a pre-tested questionnaire. A total of 616 (305 males and 311 females) elderly people were interviewed using a face-to-face interview technique. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed on the four domains (physical health, psychological health, social relationship, and environment) of QOL measured with the WHOQOL-BREF.

RESULTS

Income level and having intimate friends influenced the QOL scores of the elderly in all domains, while education level and marital status influenced psychological health, social relationship, and environment domains. Social interaction with neighbors increased the QOL scores for physical health, social relationship, and environment domains. Living in peri-urban areas was associated with lower QOL scores for physical health, psychological health, and environment, while participation in group activities increased QOL scores in these domains. Having comorbidities affected the QOL for psychological health and environment domains, while the frequency of going out affected physical health, and the frequency of religious performance affected social relationship.

CONCLUSION

Residential location, education level, marital status, income, comorbidities, social interactions with neighbors and friends, participation in group activities, and frequencies of going out and religious activities should be considered in planning and implementing programs for the elderly in Myanmar. Peri-urban development, strengthening healthcare and social security systems, and encouraging social interaction and participation in group activities play critical roles in improving the QOL for elderly residing in Myanmar.

Factors associated with quality of life of postmenopausal women living in Iran

Background

Quality of life (QoL) after menopause could be influenced by a host of personal and social factors. This study aimed to determine the factors associated with quality of life among postmenopausal women.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was conducted among 405 postmenopausal women selected using a multi-stage randomized sampling. The data-collection tools were the WHO Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF), the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), and a researcher-designed questionnaire. The relationship between QoL and its potentially correlated factors was examined using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, Spearman’s correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression.

Results

A negative correlation was found between the scores of QoL (total and all subscales) and the MRS total scores. The total scores of QoL were negatively correlated with duration of menopause (r = − 0.127, P = 0.010), gravida (r = − 0.177, P < 0.001), parity (r = − 0.165, P = 0.001), frequency of stillbirth (r = − 0.104, P = 0.037), vaginal delivery (r = − 0.161, P = 0.001), and waist-to-hip ratio (r = − 0.195, P < 0.001). The QoL total scores were positively correlated with the educational level of the participants (r = 0.207, P < 0.001) and that of their spouses (r = 0.160, P = 0.001) along with their level of monthly family income (r = 0.218, P < 0.001). Multiple-linear-regression analysis showed that the total score of QoL decreased with inadequate income, waist-to-hip ratio, and the total score of MRS.

Conclusions

Personal and social factors along with the severity of menopausal symptoms affect QoL post-menopause. These factors need to have a bearing on any effort to improve QoL among postmenopausal women.

The association between body composition and quality of life among elderly Italians

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to assess the body composition and quality of life in elderly Italian people and to value the association between these variables.

METHODS

Height, weight, humerus breadth, circumferences, skinfolds, and hand grip strength were measured in 256 older adults (age: M: 81.1 ± 7.3, F: 84.9 ± 8.1 years). Body mass index, waist-hip ratio, waist-height ratio, upper-arm areas, and body composition parameters were calculated. Quality of life (QoL) was measured by WHO Quality of Life-BREF questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF). Differences between sexes were valued. A multiple regression analysis was carried out to assess the influence of nutritional status and of socio-demographic characteristics on QoL.

RESULTS

The participants were in average overweight. Even if the percentage of overweight/obese subjects was high in both sexes, males presented a more centripetal fat distribution. These characteristics, joined to data regarding lower values of arm-muscle area and hand grip strength, put males at greater risk of cardiometabolic diseases. Regarding quality of life assessments, psychological domain showed the worst scores, and, marital status resulted the main explanatory variable for this domain.

CONCLUSIONS

Social care facilities for the elderly people require planning strategies based on health promotion criteria in order to accentuate active ageing interventions to ameliorate the quality of life of residents.

Metabolic syndrome in people with epilepsy

BACKGROUND

Little is known about the association of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and quality of life (QoL) in people with epilepsy (PWE). We evaluate the trends of MetS in PWE across various age groups. We also evaluate the association of MetS and QoL in PWE.

METHODS

Clinical and seizure data were collected in 173 people with controlled epilepsy. Physical fitness was assessed by using the six-minute walk test and one-minute step test. Self-reported SF-12 questionnaire, was used to derive physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) component scores.

RESULTS

The average age of the study population was 25.85 ± 9.62 years, and MetS was observed in 91 (52.6%). Obesity was seen in 153 (88.4%). Average distance walked in the six-minute walk test was 385.55 ± 71.52 m. Mean PCS and MCS were 45.95 ± 7.92 and 45.72 ± 10.40, respectively. More number of women had MetS (47.6% vs. 62.6%; p = 0.049) and women in the study population had lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-C (44.34 ± 11.60 vs. 38.65 ± 10.13 mm Hg; p < 0.001). Except for the variables that define MetS, none of the clinical characteristics were associated with MetS. Across age groups, prevalence of MetS was consistently at 50.0% although prevalence of hypertension showed a linear increase with age. While low HDL-C was seen highest (61.5%) in ≤20 years age, impaired fasting blood sugar (FBS) was highest in PWE aged >40 years.

CONCLUSION

Metabolic syndrome is seen in more than half of PWE, and this increased prevalence is not associated with the number of antiepileptic medicines. While prevalence of MetS was stable at 50.0% across all age groups, components of MetS have varying prevalence across age groups hence, suggesting their varied contribution across age groups.

What predicts the quality of life in Turkey: The results of a country representative study

Quality of life is a multidimensional, sophisticated, comprehensive and abstract concept that reflects life conditions, health and social welfare status, perception of life and psychology of individuals. It is affected by health problem and disease existence as well as individual, demographic, economic and social characteristics such as gender, education, marital status and income level. The objective of this study is to determine the more likely predictors of the quality of life in Turkey. 2016 Turkey Health Survey that is a large and nationally representative survey was used to reach study objective. The results indicated that individual and demographic characteristic as well as self-rated health status and disease existence were the main predictors of quality of life. Based on the findings, it can be recommended that appropriate interventions might improve quality of life which is tend to be lower among aged, female, less educated and widow/separated individuals. It is also recommended in improving health status of individuals and improving accessibility, and quality of the health services for people with a disease will increase the quality of life of individuals.

The Effects Of Myofascial Release Technique Combined With Core Stabilization Exercise In Elderly With Non-Specific Low Back Pain: A Randomized Controlled, Single-Blind Study

Purpose

To evaluate the effects of Myofascial Release Technique (MRT) with a roller massager combined with core stabilization exercises (CSE) in elderly with non-specific low back pain (NSLBP).

Patients and methods

A total of forty-five participants were randomly divided into two groups (CSE and CSE+MRT). A core stabilization exercise program was applied for the participants in the CSE group for 3 days per week for a total of 6 weeks. In addition to the core stabilization exercises, myofascial relaxation technique with a roller massager was performed for 3 days per week for 6 weeks for the participants in the CSE+MRT group. Participants were assessed in terms of pain, low back disability, lower body flexibility, kinesiophobia, core stability endurance, spinal mobility, gait characteristics and quality of life both pre- and post-treatment.

Results

It was found that the improvement in core stability endurance (p=0.031) and spinal mobility (in the sagittal plane) (p=0.022) was greater in the CSE+MRT group compared to the CSE group. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of pain, low back disability, lower body flexibility, kinesiophobia, gait characteristics and quality of life (p>0.05).

Conclusion

The current study suggests that myofascial release technique with a roller massager combined with core stabilization exercises can be a better choice in the treatment of NSLBP in elderly.
